So, full disclosure: I'm not a knitter. But my good friend Jane is, as is my mother. Both are master knitters, in fact. Extremely accomplished and extremely advanced. Today Jane brought me to this store, saying it's one of her favorite yarn stores in the whole city, and she needed a few pairs of specialized knitting needles. While there, I kept thinking how much my mom would appreciate this store, too. It's literally like a gallery of yarns. High-end, high quality yarns, with the most vibrant colors and amazing feels. And it's not just that they have the best yarns and knitting accessories here; they present them in the most appealing way, as a museum would its fine art collection. If you are a knitter and need inspiration, I have no doubt you'd get it by visiting this store. Have I mentioned the colors and feels of the yarns here? Just...wow. You'd be hard-pressed not to find whatever you are looking for here. The accessories too are so cool, and many are unique and fun. Themed stitch markers and counters and all sorts of things, the likes of which I don't understand their purposes, but they are cute. Fur-like pompoms in all colors that can snap on or off hat tops easily (how clever!). Crochet and knitting kits for all skill levels, of colorful toques and kiddie animals and more. The staff here are super knowledgable and friendly, and they hold knitting classes upstairs, too. Kinda makes me want to learn. And of course they found for Jane the needles she needed! read more

I have never been moved to write a negative review until this very day. I bought yarn online from Urban Yarns and picked it up in the shop a few days ago. It was suggested (no choice here) the purchaser order online rather than go into the store to put in the order. When I got my yarn home, I realized it was linen and not the cotton I had thought I bought. I did not realize the company, JuniperMoonFarmYarn.com, sold more than the cotton yarn my sister recommended for knitting baby blankets. The saleswoman at the store was nowhere to be seen. When she finally appeared, she seemed unhappy to see me before I even told her I would like to return or exchange the linen. She said "absolutely not". Then I asked her to check with the manager and the manager told this saleswoman to call the owner. I stood there and listened to a long conversation that made little sense except they would not take back or exchange the unopened linen. I am a seasoned knitter and I know my way around wool stores. I will never set foot in Urban Yarns again and that is too bad because they have some nice yarn. I can't say the same about the owner or Urban Yarn's staff. This is my first thumbs-down review. Ever. It is a shame because I choose to support small businesses and the area on West 10th where Urban Yarns is needs support. You would think more effort would be put into customer service and never forget "kindness. I am choosing to ... only this once. read more

Full disclosure. Long time customer. Travelled to dozens of knit shops around the world. I don't give 5 stars often so here it goes. I use stores such as Churchmouse Yarns and Purl Soho as a measuring stick. That means the store does stock pricier yarns. I don't like the term Yarn Snob as many of those higher end yarns are better for our environment and support small business models. I am fortunate that I am willing to pay for that yarn. But in addition to those yarns, are plenty of Cascade , Berrocco. And yarns in between. You can quite literally pay under $10 or over $70 (Artyarns sequin and beads!) think Christmas wish list. So selection is varied here, Blue Sky Fibers, Malabrigo, Madelaine Tosh, Handmaiden, and Kelbourne Woolens to name a few. What is impressive is the lines of wool generally are the full colour line and weights of a line. Presentation and order of store. A comfortable and elegantly decorated store. You feel inspired, with calm colours, great samples and areas to have a seat and review a book or your iPhone to check your pattern. Plenty of accessories, bags, needles, books, etc. Customer service, I have always been greeted and left alone when I wanted and helped when required. For me that is key. Return policy As with all local yarn stores I have shopped at, yarn is a store credit and no to needles. Fair. If you want to be inspired, see the latest yarn colours or lines, and want to support local and small businesses. This shop is one of the best in Vancouver. read more

I went to urban yarns (note: this store's location is near UBC) after having to endure a terrible time at '3 bags full' on Main Street. Hence, I came to Urban Yarns feeling discouraged and down. However, Urban Yarn's staff was amazing! Sylvanna (a younger staff member) was incredibly helpful and knowledgeable. Being a beginner at crocheting, knitting and yarns, I had many questions about skeins, yarns, yarn brands and yarn winders etc. She showed me around the store and what they offered. I went to urban yarns on a Friday night, hence it was pretty empty except for 7-8 ladies chatting on the second floor of their store (it was their weekly "stitch and bitch" night where local knitters and crocheters are allowed to bring their projects to the store, and chat with their friends and get help from the staff or each other. It looked like it was a lot of fun from my observations) Sylvanna, the sales staff, also informed me that I was allowed to use their yarn winder for free! I didn't have to purchase a certain amount of yarns to be able to use their equipment... I simply had to ask one of the sales staff. Also, urban yarns had 2 floors and a staircase full of yarns to choose from! Their prices were reasonable as well and they also had a bookshelf full of yarns on sale!!! Overall, I would rate this store a 5/5. I felt welcomed and appreciated as a paying customer. The staff was knowledgeable, helpful and respectful. And their selection of imported/local yarns and equipments were incredible. I think I found my new yarn store for my autumnal creations. read more

If you're looking for selection, Urban Yarns may have the West Side's best assortment of yarn. It's very well organized, and there are lots of great projects on display that can help you find inspiration. I particularly love all the kits that provide tempting juxtapositions of colors, packaged to help you tackle various patterns. I first found Urban Yarns because it's the closest place to get Addi needles, and I always appreciate their extensive and well-curated collection of accessories. Since then I've made many wonderful discoveries, and have often had helpful salespeople throw themselves into the job of finding the kind of yarn I'm looking for, or advise me on how to choose a pattern for the yarn I've just decided I can't live without. The one limitation I've found here is that end-of-day is not the best time to visit. The store runs a lot of classes (which I'm tempted to try), so if you arrive towards the end of shopping hours, they're already gearing up for the transition, and don't necessarily have as much time or attention for customers. read more

I bought a $40 skein. We were at the store for 1/2 HR. We paid at 5:31pm they closed at 5:30pm. I asked the blonde older lady behind the counter to wind the skein. She ignored the request and tossed the skein into the bag. I mentioned I wanted it to be wind into a center pull yarn, and her reply was, "We are closed." WTF??? A $40 skein purchased at closing and she said no to a extra couple of minutes work. I don't care if you are a dishwasher or a CEO, it's all about going above and beyond if you want to succeed in life. If you stay an extra 5 mins, tell your boss, you will get it back during your next shift during your break, and gain the respect of those around you for being the one someone can count on. When the old blonde said "We're closed", a thin brunette asked how many skeins I had. When she saw it was only one, she kindly said she will wind it. It took a couple of minutes. Shame on the old blonde. Also, not the greatest of customer service. No one really cared. I presume the were hired help. I cannot imagine store owners acting like this. read more

I took up knitting about 3 months ago and went totally OCD over it! My figures would twitch in anticipation over the thought of bamboo needles and soft yarn. The only thing I managed to create was rad scarves but it is the journey not the destination, right? Urban Yarns is where I learned the old school granny craft of knitting. It is now cool to knit in case you didn't know!. So I signed up for a class and was quite inspired with the impeccable merchandising and selection at Urban Yarns. Of Vancouver knitting stores, Urban Yarns is one of my favourites. They carry a lot of the brands I like (Debbie Bliss, Rowan), and for a small shop they have a decent selection of different weights & types of yarn. They also have a pretty good shelf of knitting books -- many of the classics you'd want. On the other hand, I still do most of my yarn shopping when I'm down in Seattle visiting relatives, because I haven't found a single yarn store that compares to Weaving Works there. No one has the selection of Dale that you'd want if you were on a Norwegian sweater spree, as I was a few years back, or the wide variety of yarns and brands. Urban Yarns is a bit more edited than that, but what they have is high quality and certainly will do for many projects. The staff is also very friendly & helpful. read more

Urban Yarns on 10th is THE place for serious knitters in Vancouver. Fabulous wool in every colour and fiber imaginable...supplies for every aspect of knitting...pretty containers and purses to keep your stash organized...needles, needles, needles. The staff are all nice and super helpful. They will answer any knitting questions you might have. After hours lessons are great. Anything from beginner's knitting classes to more advanced classes for specific techniques. I had an awful experience with that stroe. That will be my first and last time in that store with awful owner. I bought 3 yarn and 2 needles ended up $70 (so expensive) 2 days later i found same yarns online for much cheaper price. After 2 days i went back to store to return the yarns and needles and they didnt refound it. Yarn were on original packaging and untouched and needle in original package untouched i havent even brough the stuff out of the bag.and just wanted to return them and buy the same yarns with much cheaper price online. And the seller did t return and she said they give me store credit and she said its return on the reciept. What the hell is that seller never told me when i was buying they wont return untouched items and its just return on the recipt after payment. Be care ful guys with that. I even talked to the store owner and she just said i cant do anything for you.we wont return. So awful i never expected that attitude from a local store no respect to customer rights and they just let you to pay and ever tell you there is no return and when u wanna do the return they tell you about their return policy. My money is gone and now i have the over priced yarns. I will never be back to that store and wont support such a business. They dont have sales and customer and thats how they try to make money out of people pocket. I have no respect for such a business and business owner. Shame. read more

Although I don't personally knit, I have been to every major knitting store between here and Portland. This store stands out good color selection, they also uses mix of both incandescent and florescent light to display the yarn so the yarn you chose will like been color you thought when you bring it how to work on your project. I like the couch in the front of store of customers to sit and knit at to work out project problems. To the men of the world there is a good bike shop down the to browse if your visit reached its limit. Also thanks Urban Yarns we took advantage to the yelp offer after checking into today. read more

Since they moved a couple storefronts up the block (a few years ago now) Urban Yarns has just been getting better and better. Completely welcoming to the newbie knitter as well as the seasoned expert. I love the easy-going nature of the staff, pushy is not in their vocabulary, but they will not hesitate to encourage your stash enhancement. Once when I went in I was looking for a specific colourway of Malabrigo Rasta. I had called ahead and they were really helpful on the phone, trying to describe the colours and in the end suggested I come in to double-check. They even offered to put the skeins behind the counter for me. In the end, I went up to their other location in North Vancouver's Edgemont Village and picked up the skein there. read more

I was surprised to see the staff without masks during covid, especially as the case numbers are on the rise now. The selection of yarn is great, service ranges from surly to friendly depending on the day. I'm not a fan of the extra charge for winding yarn, especially as much of the product is already in the higher price range. read more

OMG I finally found a place that carried NEON yarn. I did some price shopping and information on behalf of a friend of mine who offered to knit me a tri-colored scarf, however, I wasn't sure about the orange as it was bright but not 100% sure if it was neon. She is picky about her colors, therefore, wanted to run it by her first before coming back for the yarn. The person at the til was super duper helpful, especially for someone like myself who does not knit at a hobby. The prices were very reasonable. read more

I came in and noticed some nice hats and asked about whether there were any available for sale. the lady (perhaps the owner) was incredibly rude, and actually imitated me at one point, then stated that I should come to the store for the knitting classes in order to learn to make one for myself rather than buy one. They certainly have some nice yarns. I love their super-soft baby alpaca, but so far I haven't worked up the nerve to fork over all the cash needed to buy it. They've got a whole bunch of Malabrigo (my current weakness), but I think they could use a bit more in terms of more affordable options. They've got a very nice selection of a lot of different kinds of yarn, and they are eager and excited to get you going and keep you going. I'm an experienced knitter and haven't taken any of their classes, but when I've been buying yarn, they've been very enthusiastic and helpful, and have pointed me toward a number of knitting events. I hovered between two and three stars for a few minutes. There is a good selection and some of the staff, including the owner, are excellent. However, they do have a problem with some snobby, unhelpful staff - especially for the beginner or novice knitter. For friendly staff all the time (who are helpful as well) I recommend Gina Brown Yarns (about 5 min drive from Urban Yarns) or Three Bags Full on Main Street. Just because one has a shop in Point Grey doesn't mean one needs to brush off younger / novice customers - who may actually have quite a bit of money to spend - somewhere else. read more

I think this business is everything a small business shouldn't be unaccommodating and kind of rude. I found the people at Point Grey, lovely but their Edgemont counterparts are rude and unhelpful, especially when their advice and help caused the problem. Definitely not the place to go for a novice knitter. You would be better off going to somewhere like 3 Bags Full or Plum Project in Deep Cove if you want some good customer service and understanding as a newbie. Also they are really expensive and with the dollar being on par, I'm going to order from the States what I don't buy locally. read more

It's an OK place, especially if you know what you are buying and how much you need. One time I didn't, and needed a sales lady's advice (it was an older blond lady) and she overestimated me by 50%; her attitude was also kinda snobbish. But they do have sales that are pretty good. The reason I knocked off two stars, even though I quite like the place is because of colour selection and staff. I've found that the place is usually packed, like to the point where people have difficulty getting in the door because it's such a tiny place, or there's like 2 customers and somehow no matter how many customers there are, they always seem understaffed. The workers are always busy helping other customers, and I don't really want to chase them down or follow them around, so I usually save my questions, and it also takes a while to pay, and is very congested. I think it would help if customers would leave their kids at home, because it's such a tiny place and I've noticed that a fair amount of customers bring young kids (plural) who then proceed to unscramble yarn, sit in the already narrow walkways, and complain loudly or even cry about how much they'd rather be somewhere else. Of course, this happens everywhere, but I've noticed it quite a bit here, and it's not really somewhere that you'd expect this sort of thing, and combined with congestion in the store, long waits, etc, it makes me want to volunteer to watch the kids outside. They have a huge variety of yarn, from cheaper to very expensive, etc. However, I guess since they're squeezed into a tiny place, they have a very limited selection of colours of the yarn they carry. Now, I've never asked if I can order colours, because they're always under staffed and very busy, so I'm not sure if you can. As an example, I wanted to pick up a couple of skeins of the Blue Sky Alpacas Worsted. I had seen on the website that they have like 20 colours, and when I walked into the store, I saw that they only carried 5, 2 of which were white and an off-white, and the other 3 were similarly light colours. So, unfortunately I'm going to have to start looking for another place to get the colours I want! It's sad, because Urban Yarns is at a very convenient location for me, and the staff that I've had some sort of interaction with do seem friendly. read more

This store has a gorgeous array of higher-end wools and great patterns. I find the store layout a little hard to navigate. It takes a while to get help, too. Once, when people were waiting for me, I popped in just to see if the store had a certain brand of wool. It took 15 minutes to get a yes or no answer (no, in fact). This is a place for spending some time in, not a quick stop. I don't look forward to shopping here. But then, there are few stores I really enjoy being in, so my criticism maybe isn't worth much. read more

I love Urban Yarns! The store is walking distance from my house - both a good and bad thing! They have such beautiful yarns that I almost always add to my stash when I walk in the door. They are very helpful, especially Kathleen who always takes the time to say hello even if she has a line-up of people waiting for advice. Everyone there is helpful, however. The yarn selection will be of interest to both novice and expert knitters. They have a really good selection of needles and a massive collection of patterns. There are often samples of knit items in the store so you can see what the finished product will look and feel like. Books, accessories and all sorts of tempting items. They sell gift certificates so you can safely send your non-knitting gift givers there. (Like your husband or boyfriend.) I notice that they help skittish-looking male types really quickly so they don't get itchy feet and run out the door. I think they keep a computer record of all your purchases, so you could go in and say, "I bought a yarn here six months ago and it was blue and I need to order more but I can't recall exactly what it was." Great store with another "branch" in Edgemont Village in North Vancouver. read more

I have been here during the week and the staff are usually helpful and the store have a great selection of really good yarns (that are often on sale). However, the last two times I have visited on the weekend the store has been staffed by two young women who demonstrated the most underwhelming customer service. The first time I went in, one of them yawned at me and told me she was "too foggy" to help find a yarn for a pattern I was doing. I thought it might just be a bad night, so I gave it another try on a different Saturday evening, and found the same two working. Let's just say the next visit was worse than the first, and when I asked to speak to the manager the salesperson told me she was on vacation for the next two weeks. If you know what you want and just need someone to ring you up--this is the place for you. If, on the other hand, you prefer a knit shop that offers a courteous and helpful staff, you will need to go somewhere else.
