One of the only presents I bought for myself in Vancouver was purchased at Maiwa. And it took forever for me to decide which naturally dyed leather handbag I wanted. ;) This is a really nice shop with lots of garments, silks, linens, home decor items, accessories, pillows, shawls, scarves and bedding. The prices were affordable, especially for Granville Island, and the staff were very friendly.

A unique retail store featuring hand-woven products as they work with Indian artisans for mostly clothes and bedding sheets, etc. They have an extensive section in the back corner, right side.. It's a fairly cramped store beside Net Loft Cafe, as they sure maximize their product offerings, except for men's of course lol. As pic shows, they only did this as an afterthought, just a tiny corner, on 2 racks at most, on the left side beside the cashier. And expensive it was: $100 for a shirt with a fashion that's more laid back and conservative. But as manager Shirley who was friendly and proud to point out, it's high end quality using natural and organic materials. Also sell books.

Maiwa Handprints is in the Net Loft building on Granville island. They also have other related locations in Vancouver. My last, of many, bedding sets I have purchased here needed replacing after 20+ years. Shirley was most helpful, influencing my decision, putting together a beautiful combo in the Ajrakh prints. High quality cotton, incredible value for such a great product. Thank you Maiwa!

Beyond freaking cool! I so wish this place were in Seattle. The store is beautiful and has a great selection of dyes and textile supplies as well as yarns. My friend and I each got a handstamping set with Indian woodblocks, dyes and a plain scarf for around $35. We had a blast making beautiful scarves the following afternoon. This will be a must see every time I am in Vancouver.

I have to say I am extremely happy I made my first artist-quality paint investment here for those three reasons, and for the small-vendor service I get when I have questions. After consulting with the sole staff member on my first visit I picked up the 15-colour starter set for $60 plus a couple more tubes in larger sizes. Now every time I'm on Granville Island I just love spending a few minutes here where I'm sure to treat myself to a new colour; at $4-7 for a new 60ml tube it's good retail satisfaction value. The reduced selection compared to major acrylic brands is actually a relief to me; I am not bombarded by choice, and I can actually reach a point where there isn't more to collect (a good thing for me). I was very happy to recently see the always-fun Raw Canvas (http://www.yelp.ca/biz/raw-canvas-vancouver) using all Kroma paints...

For those who are wary, try out a few of their tubes and reserve judgment until after you have done so. I know you'll be happy with these paints.

However, many a time I have looked at the colorful displays of beads in the window while walking by or waiting for the bus, so while I have always been aware of Country Beads, I have never had a need to go there. Then a couple of years ago I purchased a pendant at a craft fair and could not find the right chain to go with it. I remembered Country Beads and I was able to find the type of chain I needed, and I was able to customize it to just the right length as well. They also attached the clasp for me, and it was a very reasonable price--just a couple of bucks, whereas a jewellery store would have charged at least $20. From then on, I decided that I would go to Country Beads for all my necklace needs. Last year I purchased a couple of necklaces. They were cheap (about $30 for both), but I loved them as they went very well with several of my outfits, and people always complimented me on them. So I was worried when they broke in a way that I, a non-crafty person, could not fix, then I thought of Country Beads, and was pleased to discover that they do repairs as well. The price of repairs is $20 an hour plus materials (the materials are not terribly expensive, though), and I figured that based on the type of repairs that needed to be done (which seemed very complicated to me), it would cost me more than the price of the necklaces. But I loved my necklaces so much that I was willing to pay whatever it took. So I was pleasantly surprised when the bill came to only $26--$15 for labour, and the rest for materials and tax. And my necklaces are as good as new. So whenever I need a chain or a repair, Country Beads will be my go-to place. Go to Country Beads for all your necklace needs!

The only reason we have 4 stars we because the service here could've been better. Me and my partner weren't greeted, we were left kind of confused and figured it out on our own. We finally asked for help and she explained it pretty well. Besides the okay service, the activity itself is actually so fun. I love the variety of beads they have and charms. There's gems, regular beads, all that you need. They all have different prices so watch for that. The prices around $16 each in US dollars. So it was actually pretty good for the fun you're having along with the cute bracelet you can make!

I always score impressive pendants, findings, and sterling silver bails/findings at a great price. Great, friendly service too, at amazing prices, especially for Granville Island/Kitsilano. I was looking for blue fire/flame labradorite pendants, and I looked everywhere but couldn't find anything remotely suitable under $100. Upon walking into Beadworks, there was a display of crystal pendants, and they had a few Labradorites for $22! I quickly grabbed one, when a staff showed me a nearby dish on a display with more similar pendants. I found a gorgeous square briolette labradorite pendant for $32! There are tons of gorgeous, handmade pieces in their front window, I asked and was surprised at their reasonable prices. I asked the staff about silver bails, requesting sterling silver, and then showed me a square bin of many, for $4 each. I left with 2 stunning pendants and a couple of bails for $50, half the price of 1 single pendant in nearby shops. Service was helpful and friendly, despite being VERY busy on a sunny Sunday Labour Day weekend. I've since bought a raw ruby pendant, more findings, so this is now my go-to for new pendants and supplies from now. I cannot recommend their selection, prices or service levels, highly enough!

Which is why I've trained my main squeeze to sniff out a fabric store from miles away. It was he, as a matter off fact, who spotted The Cloth Shop during our visit to Granville Island. Tucked into a back corner off an alley, this special little spot may not be huge, but they've managed to tastefully fill every little nook and cranny in the store with with every conceivable type, style, and color of quilting cottons, linens, batiks, and flannels. and they come in everything from yardage to quite possibly the best selection of precuts I've seen north of Seattle - from FQ bundles to charm packs to layer cakes to jellyrolls, and even harder-to-find fat eighths too! And the service was so friendly. We were warmly greeted by Nick, who welcomed me to the shop and answered questions from me and other patrons. Nick is himself a quilter so he's very knowledgeable. The prices here are typical for a higher-end fabric shop, but as the saying goes you get what you pay for: quality fabrics from name designers like Moda and Kaffe Fassett, to name two. I will definitely be adding this shop to my rounds when visiting Vancouver.
