I spent a couple of days in Pendleton and stumbled upon this on Yelp. Just a heads-up, you'll need…read moreto book a reservation because the groups tend to fill up quickly--we had 17 people in our group! This was definitely more than we were expecting! The tour was about 1.3 hours long, and you'll need to climb and descend stairs and squeeze into small spaces. If any of that sounds like a challenge, it might not be the right fit for you. Our tour guide was "BRAD," and he was amazing! He's practically "been there, done that." He grew up exploring these tunnels with his friends and has all sorts of stories to share. You'll learn a lot about the history and some simple sayings that will make you laugh and give you a deeper understanding. For example, there's a "Shoot" of whiskey! From the outside, you have no idea how huge this place is, and we only get to see a small part. Don't miss out if you get the chance. We'd definitely go back and bring a friend who hasn't seen it before.

The price of the ticket included a free drink token, 3 shots during the tour, and a sample of a local meat company. The tour was led by Matt and is meant for mature adults who don't get upset or offended by certain language. It was such a fun tour. Matt told us the history while making it fun throughout the whole 2 hour tour. I would definitely recommend this tour to anyone who wants to add a little bit more fun to the tour.

Pendleton is not all gussied up like WW. It is down to earth and has a feel like you've stepped back in time. it is clean and easy to get around, and the people there are very friendly. There are museums, tours (Pendleton Woolen Mills, Pendleton Underground Tours), a river walk, beautiful old homes to see on the hill, and about 15 miles away, the Tamastslikt Cultural Center. Only reason for 4 stars not 5, and this is very important: DO NOT BE DOWNTOWN AFTER DARK. We made the mistake of thinking we could go on a pub crawl. We had booked a room downtown, so we could walk around after dinner and have a few cocktails. Ruh Roh...we exited the restaurant after dark, and we were no longer in Pendleton. We were in the Twilight Zone. Really, groups of 3-8 people out roaming the streets, and every single one of them appeared to be high, and they looked to be ravaged by meth. No one said or did anything to harm or alarm us, but still, we felt we were not safe, and went straight back to our hotel. So Pendleton by day is a great destination. Be sure to skedaddle out of there by sundown.

If you're not into that it's hard to fit into the area, but out of all the surrounding/even smaller towns, it does have the most to do. The good points are that it has decent restaurant choices and of course the casino (which also has an awesome movie theatre). I'd never choose to live here or the surrounding areas again, I don't even know if there's much point to visit (unless you like the Pendleton Round-up!), but at least you'll find something to do if you do get stuck here ;)

I'm a fan, as much as I can be. It's a prison, after all. I wished there was something I could've…read moreread about so I knew what to expect, so I decided to write something here for future visitors. This was my first time visiting an inmate in prison so I have nothing to compare it to, but I was pleasantly surprised by what a positive experience it was. The staff and guards were wonderful and respectful. Upon arrival, you sign in on the clipboard and take a seat in the visitor's waiting room. They call people back ten(ish) at a time to show your ID and get signed up. You'll be given a key for a locker to store your belongings. You are only permitted ID, locker key and a clear pouch/baggie with quarters; nothing else, not even a gum wrapper. You then sit again for a short amount of time and they will call you up about ten at a time again to go through the metal detectors then be escorted back to the visiting room where you'll choose an appropriately sized table for you and your inmate. Inmates can have up to 5 visitors. At each table will be a yellow chair for the inmate and green chairs for visitors. Chairs are not to be moved. There are several different sized tables for different sized groups. If there's just one visitor then you sit at the long table. When you arrive in the room, your inmate may not be in there yet but should arrive within a few minutes. Some visitors will take this time to buy snacks out of the vending machines. You cannot share beverages with your inmate but you can open a bag of chips and share those. We bought a Mt. Dew and Snickers for our loved one and he was thrilled when he sat down. This is a special treat for a lot of these guys. They allow visitors to stay for the whole session. We were in the room from 8:40 until 11:15 which was a pleasant surprise. When your inmate arrives, you can give a huge hug which is awesome when you haven't seen somebody in awhile. You may also hug and kiss upon leaving and hold hands while visiting. The visiting room has a big play area for kids as well as games to play with your inmate. I saw multiple people playing cards and keeping score on dry erase boards. When you checked in to visit, you will have been asked if you'd like to pay $2 for a photo. If you have done this, then a guard will come around and pull the inmate and their visitors to the side and take your picture. They'll provide you with a 4x6 photo for the visitor to take home. I'll definitely be doing this next time! I saw some of the photos and they were quite good. The guards will yell "3 more minutes until visiting is over", and people will start cleaning up their tables. Many people spent the last minute or two just hugging and saying their good-byes. Inmates then have to sit down at the tables while visitors line up against the wall to be escorted into the next long hall. Then visitors are escorted out ten at a time. Once you're back in the lobby, you can sign up for the afternoon session on the clipboard. We didn't do this but were told that people who didn't visit the morning session are prioritized. If there's enough space then you'll be allowed to visit the second session. One frequent visitor had told us that they have always been able to go in for the 2nd session. I imagine this might not be so on holidays. Remember to dress appropriately, nothing revealing and NO blue denim! The inmates are in jeans and navy blue shirts, some have light blue denim button up shirts, as well. I again want to reiterate how incredibly pleasant and positive this experience was. It's refreshing to see how respectful the guards were and how much they value positive interactions between inmates and their families. I'm sure it's a benefit to have happy inmates. Kudos to EOCI staff!

I feel odd about reviewing a…read morelibrary I didn't actually check books out of recently, but all libraries deserve some love, so here it is: I grew up in Athena and remember when we didn't even have a library and when this one was finally made, sometime when I was in high school. Once it was, I felt like I finally had a place to hang out even if that was kind of "uncool". Even then I rarely checked books out because I preferred grabbing (shorter) books and reading them there. Sooo many memories of trying to walk the town in the cold because there was nothing else to do and stopping in at the library to warm up, just to end up grabbing a book and spending hours there. I didn't realize until later on that this is probably the best and most important part of this tiny town. Libraries are just like that. On my most recent visit I didn't have enough time to read anything fully, but walking home from where I was working I found myself here to warm up again just like when I was a kid. It was nice, though all I did was say hello, flip through a couple of books, then continue my walk after I warmed up. Since it's not a huge town, it's not going to be a huge library, but I think it's enough. It has a good selection for the size, it's clean, and it's comfortable (most important to me). It's not a library you should go out of your way to visit (because surrounding towns do have bigger libraries, therefore bigger selections) but a nice library all the same.
