I got there at about 2:45 on a Thursday. There were 8 people in front of me in line, and I was out of there in about 12 minutes (I was staring at my watch, believe you me). One employee was ready for the next in line, but the previous customer was still standing there. He started yelling to keep the line moving. When it was my turn I was lucky enough to get the same charming fellow. I put my little mail pick up slip on the counter, but evidently it was so far away from him he would have had to lean forward in his chair. The man actually motioned for me to bring it closer to him. I've honestly never seen anything like it. Then he wasn't going to give me my package since I recently moved and my ID didn't match my current address. Some lady came by and told him to just give it to me, which I really appreciated. Having read the other reviews, it was better than I expected. HOWEVER, I only went here because I had to. Negative stars is the only way to rate this place. It is the worst post office in the country by far. Not only did I put a change of address in a month before I moved, I didn't get mail at my location because they said their was no carrier key set up, even after I had called 10 times in order to have it set up. It took 2 months to get them to install the key. Then they refused to give me my held mail for the new location until I showed them a piece of mail that had been delivered to that address with my name and address correct!! Well I would love to, but you haven't delivered any and that's all I wanted. Had to go to the post office many other times now even after the key was I stalled because anytime there is a package they say there is no access to the building! Not only do they have a carrier key but they walked in and left my mail but not my packages. Recently been trying to get a certified letter delivered. A note was left saying it had to be signed for and I could pick it up at the post office. Went there and they refused to even look at my tracking number and told me I would have to come back another day because they don't do same day pick up even though I had a confirmation email saying I could pick it up. I requested online that it be redelivered today and my husband worked from home to be here to sign for it. I wrote Instructions to ring doorbell or knock as someone is home if they "don't have access" and yet again that didn't happen. So I went to the post office to see if I still needed to pick it up there and the man at the window was even more rude the awful attitude women. This man was yelling and interrupting the women in front of me to sign her name and address, while refusing to give her a pen to do it with. When she tried to explain that she doesn't know how to write the address without seeing the address as she doesn't know how he refused to show her the mail she was trying to pick up, and he kept ripping it out of her hands as she reached for it. He had her ID that matched her mail. After she managed to attempt to write down the info after he yelled at her for 5 mins. He refused to give her the mail and threw her ID ON THE FLOOR. HE then buzzed for the next person before she could even walk away. Lucky me, I was next. I told him I was looking for a letter that was supposed to be delivered on Monday and I had a confirmation number to pick up here. He then asked if I had a tracking number. I said yes one min. And I opened the text. As I was trying to open the text he yells at me to show him and ID 3 times. I said yes I'll get that for you in just a second, here is the tracking... and before I could even finish he yelled at me again to show him and ID. I gave him my ID and I said I just need to know where my letter is and if I'm supposed to pick it up here or it's to be redelivered. Again raising his voice and interrupting me asked if this was the address on my ID and I said no but my name matches and i just wanted to know based on my confirmation and tracking number where it is. And he just kept interrupting me saying I have to show him and piece of mail with my name and address correct in order to get it. And I tried to ask even for him to tell me where my letter is or if it's even going to be there for me to pick up? And he just got louder and louder repeating that he has to have mail in order to give me my mail. Never once answered if it was there, never once looked at my tracking number or confirmation. He wouldn't even let me finish my damn sentence. This place has the worst customer service in the world. This man should be fired not only for throwing the women's ID but how he had her almost in tears because she was illiterate not to even mention how rude he was to me refusing to tell me anything about my own damn mail and refusing to even look up the tracking to find out anything about it. I'm feeling up for contributing to the negative cesspool that has become the Uptown PO yelp page. Here's my story! When you arrive at the Uptown Post Office there is always a line of 10+ people. Some of them cursing. And maybe one window with someone dealing with customers. Another window with two (larger) women talking about their lunch or the break they're currently on, with a growing line. There in the recesses, deep within the windows, more women huddled around each other, cracking up. Their laughs jump out at you, ricochet across the marble, beat into your mood. HA. HA. HA. When you actually approach the one window that is open, the woman looks at you with such a deflated look of disdain and disinterest, that your soul leaps out of you and decides to wait on the street corner. Soulless, you try to smile but her frozen stare halts the twitching muscles at the corners of your mouth, leaving a gaping rictus. And then when you leave, and say, Oh hullo, to your little soul on the street corner, You realize that 45 MINUTES HAVE PASSED, and that you are 45 minutes older, And you have learned nothing except this: The Uptown Post Office cares nothing for you, it will go on existing whether you want it to or not, you will have to live with this reality and, Hopefully, start using privatized mail carriers more frequently. read more

If I could give less than one star... Every time you go in, their system is different. Despite the window being open where occasionally someone pokes their head out and asks if anybody's picking up any packages, the last time I was there it was closed and we were told to go to the end of their 40-minute line only to have one of the workers waddle over to where the packages are and then waddle back... The WORST postal service location hands down! The level of competence, or lack thereof, is completely unreal! Not only did the carrier, whom which by the way talks very loudly on the phone while delivering the mail and makes COUNTLESS mistakes because of this, delivered my mail to another location ( by the way, this package had cancer medication in it) but when I was scheduled for different delivery of another package, my package has been delayed and I called today to get an update on it and they LOST MY PACKAGE! I'm over this, and my complaints will not end at the local level, but I'm in contact with corporate and the news to investigate what is really going on at this location. I'm spending a lot of money on my packages and either they are stealing packages or are just plain incompetent to do their assigned jobs. Completely agree this is the worst post office ever. I had a very small light box, that was sealed with duct tape. Because of the line I went to the self help kiosk. A janitor, not a mail clerk told me I couldn't mail a package using duct tape, because that is what people that mail bombs use. So I can still mail a bomb, but I have to use different tape? Um ok never heard that before, but what ever. I go to the window and ask for priority tape and remember this is a tiny box and was informed they no longer give away tape. I have been using the priority tape at the post office free for 15-20 years. I was told rather bluntly UPS and Fed Ex don't give away free tape so why should they. She said I had to buy clear tape. The tape they wanted to sell me was $3.49 a roll and I know their is a dollar store across the street. The clerk sensing my frustration got some tape and got my tiny box ready to go, she said she will probably get in trouble, but thought it was a ridiculous policy and expects the PO to lose business. She was very nice and helpful once I got past her her initial gruffness. It will be worth the extra travel time to go else where in the future. I do not understand why, after so MANY complaints over so MANY years, this p.o. continues to be SO unbelievably horrible. Yet again today, I was reminded of why I would rather pay more at one of the mailing-services stores than go here -- and I say this when my financial state is anything but healthy. Non delivery of packages. THIEVES!! Being former military, I can tell you that THEY KNOW distribution workers/carriers are stealing mail. That means upper echelon SUPPORTS theft of mail. FELONY! Shipping history updates state attempts were made when they were NOT. I had my new debit card sent to my PO box there and it was NEVER received. Had it cancelled and had new card held at the bank for my pick up. This is why the USPS is getting replaced. read more

I love having a post office so close. However, the service sucks. There never is someone there directing customers or the staff. People have waited in line for 30-45 min, sometimes just to purchase stamps. Ridiculous. The sickening things is that it doesn't have to be this way. While waiting in line, you see people (workers) walking around and they refuse to jump on a register to get the line down. Horrible customer service. So, I only go to the P.O early AM or early Afternoon. I never go in the evening or on a weekend. I have better things to do than wait in line for close to an hour. read more

There is never a good time to visit this store. You first get accosted by the local beggars (who frequently curse at you if you don't give them money.) Then you wait....and wait....and wait. I don't think I have ever stood in line for less than 30 mins. Then on the way out someone decides that you owe them money because they opened the door for you. They stole a VCR DVD combo unit I sold on Ebay. I had my postage receipt with the number they needed. They had no answer. But they did walk around a lot and talked to about 5 different people, one was a manager. He said "I honesty do not know what happened to your package." I handed it to an actual person, and it was not in the post office and no record of it ever leaving. Do your post office stuff online and have a pick-up and try to use UPS if you can afford it. read more

If i could give zero stars I would. I went to this one because I thought it had to be better than the worst one in the country which is located in Rogers Park. I was proven wrong...Long lines, bad customer service. The cashier that saw me was not helpful when i was trying to send a package international. The whole time she was speaking through her ear buds on a personal call. Another male cashier could be heard practically screaming at customers in the line. Very little supplies available. I had completed a customs form before joining the long line only to be told it was the wrong one, even though it was the only one available. The cashier insinuated that was my fault... any USPS I have visited in Chicago has been absolutely dreadful. Since this is post office is in my neighborhood sometimes by necessity I am forced to go and I have to say that things have improved. The self-help postage kiosk has consistently been working. The drop off box has not been jammed. There is a drop off window which is even better. One morning I arrived at the post office 5 minutes before it opened and an employee pro-actively saw that my postage was already affixed to my box and said he would take the box so that I didn't have to wait around. One thing I have to admit, even when I was giving this place 1 star is that packages always ship quickly from this office without getting lost or damaged. read more

I understand that Postal Services have gone through a major change and the workload each carrier has is very stressful. They work amazing hours and face the elements on a daily basis and I am very appreciative for their hard work. With that being said, the postal carrier we have is the complete antithesis of customer support and following federal laws regarding mail. I continue to have terrible service with my carrier out of this station. I ordered gifts for Christmas and they were delayed, not the carriers fault, but when I did receive a notice the package arrived I signed it and put it back in my box. The next day I saw the carrier remove the card and asked if I needed to do anything else and he just looked at me and said "no" and walked out the door. He took with him the card I signed and I assumed that my package would arrive within a couple of days. It has been a week and I still don't have the package nor have I received another card. I have filed a complaint and hoping I receive some type of response. This particular carrier continues to just throw mail into everyone's box and at one point just place everyone's mail on the block outside the neighbors house, didn't even deliver the mail. He doesn't secure the community mail box and it is left open and unsecured for anyone to go through The issue is the Postmaster at the Uptown station, apparently they do not care about how their job is done and there doesn't appear to be any pride in their position or there wouldn't be so many complaints about this station. There is no accountability within the ranks of this post office. On a positive note, I have been into the station and received great customer service from the window and will continue to go there. But, if the postmaster will take the time to review these Yelp posts maybe things would turn around. I want my package and have been waiting and nothing. read more

I've been going to the Uptown Post Office for more than 20 years. Recently I went to the Lakeview branch (Southport and Irving) and it was like night and day. All counters manned. A two-minute wait in line. A clerk who bent the rules for me and got my package out Overnight Mail even though it was a couple minutes after 5:00. It was an eye-opening experience. It really made me realize how craptacular the Uptown P.O. is. Has anyone EVER made it in or out of there in less than 15 minutes? read more

I just don't get it! I went to the Uptown office to renew my kids' passports. We waited in line for 20 minutes only to be told by the Clerk that she doesn't know how to process an Agency application. I plan to use an agency that specializes in expediting passport applications. I told her that the USPS' website listed her office as a location that specializes in these types of requests and she simply said "I do not know how to do it". Obviously she has never received training or doesn't recall how to do it. Also, based on her attitude I am convinced she will never seek out training because it's easier to just send the customer away. To top that off, she suggested that we go to another location near by and guaranteed they were still open. Guess what? You got it! We got there and the passport window was closed!!! As I'm writing this, it's 11:22 at night, and they are (very loudly) power washing their parking lot, which my apartment unfortunately looks out onto. This is a regular occurrence, and actually earlier than usual. Usually this happens post midnight, when I have to work the next day. What the freaking f#$k? Why the hell can't you hire a power washing guy who can come at a regular hour, say, before 10 pm at least?
