I grew up around the corner, and this was our "go to" post office growing up. The staff have always been friendly and helpful. I don't recall it having a weigh-your-own package scale here. Back in the late 1990s, I had the opportunity to visit the Guntersville Dam, one of the series of…read more49 dams built and controlled by the TVA (Tennessee Valley Authority) to control the Tennessee River. In those days, you could cross the catwalks on the lock gates, walk across the dam and enter the powerhouse to the visitors center. We experienced the four giant turbines that turn water power into electric power. Sadly, in this day and age, that is no longer the case. I've been back to the dam twice in the last three months to visit, once on the north side of the river and once on the south side to see this awesome piece of engineering excellence. According to the TVA, there is a visitor center and I came back looking for it, remembering my experience seeing the turbines up close and personal. Well, so much for that. The visitor center, on the south side of the river, is a small pavilion with rest rooms, an office that has no public access, and a series of interpretive signs in an outdoor kiosk. The kiosk is not terribly inviting on a cold, February day but is probably very educational and summer would be more conducive to actually standing there and reading the panels. If you are an angler, the dam offers marvelous opportunities for you, both upriver and downriver. Boat landings are available with no launch fees. All the facilities here are open for you at no charge but you won't have access to the power plant anymore. On my second visit, in February 2019, the Tennessee River was very high and all the spillways were open. On that day of my visit, reports said 1.2 million gallons of water per second were coming through the gates. That makes for some very turbulent water, exciting to observe but maybe not where you would like to be in a boat. During the regular season (read: summer) there are lots of recreational opportunities here. For me, the visitor center was a disappointment because it didn't live up to my adventure of 20 years ago. Still, I'm glad I stopped to see it again. Plan your visit accordingly, too. If you are on one side of the river and wish to see the other side (the visitors pavilion and interpretive kiosk are on the south shore). Getting to the other shore is not an easy crossing - it's a long way around by any vehicle except watercraft. At least you'll be able to stop for lunch in Guntersville. I worked in this building for months waiting for an on-site position to be available, and, at that time, this building was brand new! In nice weather Colsa hosted parking lot Friday socials and provided things like Cokes and hot dogs for everyone to enjoy while we visited. The Advanced Research Center (ARC) was built next door and I never had internal business there; however, I did go check out the small-ish lobby area when necessary. Colsa management were all extremely professional approachable people who really listened to you and provided useful feedback, suggestions and guidance! They truly walk in their corporate values: "People are our most valuable resource. Integrity underlies all that we do. Teamwork is integral to success. Customer Satisfaction is the cornerstone of our corporation." I had an exceptional experience working for Colsa and I highly recommend this company's services and employees!
