For those who are unfamiliar Vfw stands for veterans of foreign wars and they are non profit organizations comprised of veterans and military service members from the active, guard and reserve forces. On the inside they have some very nice gaming rooms with a pool table, pull slot games and other activities. They also have a nice bar area and a really nice wide open hall that I assume can be rented out for events and hosts other events for the vfw members. This post has been in okolona for as long as I can remember. Growing up in okolona I can remember in my "edgy" pre teen and teenage years on spring/summer days walking from my parents house to visit nearby establishments like Hastings, mr gattis, and the Jefferson mall and using the vfw post massive parking lot as a shortcut to cut off traffic and time. we used to get to these establishments quicker by doing that and to stay hidden behind the buildings in front on Preston Highway so neither my parents nor my friends parents knew we was walking Preston Highway. So I've probably walked by and hung out and did goofy teen stuff at least a hundred times over the years. Ironically I had never stepped foot into the establishment until the last two days. Last night on Good Friday I was visiting my parents and they was telling me the vfw post has fish frys during Lenten and they heard it was good. So we made the trip. The fish came with some sides an interesting looking coconut chocolate chip brownie type desert. I'd had already taken some of my kids out for pizza that night so I didn't partake In Either. However my wife and parents said the fish was great and the dessert treat was super tasty. So I'll have to remember this place next Lenten season. While there picking up the fish fry food I noticed a flyer for a family Easter event the next day from noon to 4pm. So we made our 2nd trip in as many days. The Easter event was great! They had the parking lot setup like a Halloween trick or trunk event and you took your Easter basket around and filled up. At the end they had booth to get photos with the Easter bunny and gave cool gifts out like hula hoops, jump ropes, toy baseball bats and etc after taking the photo. They also had a small raffle table where you spent a $1 on tickets and put it in whatever prize you want to try and win. To the left of that was a stand where they were selling hot dogs, cheeseburgers, drinks and chips. Prices were cheap. 50 cents for chips, $1 for sodas and $2 for hot dog or cheeseburger. So we got the kids some good and sat down at picnic tables and enjoyed the weather and festivities. The food was prepare on a grill by the horse shoe pits and it was all really tasty. Overall, from what I can tell from glancing at the inside it is an amazing place for our vets to hang out and socialize. Looks like a fun place. They host a good fish fry and hosted a great Easter event. Evidently they do tons of community events. My parents have lived down the road for almost 30 years and had no idea. That has changed and they and my family will now be more involved in attending these. All profits go to a great cause for our vets and they seem like they host some fun events, so we are in!
