U.S.A. Today is an American daily newspaper and news broadcasting company. Founded by Al Neuharth in 1982, USA Today operates from corporate headquarters in Tysons, Virginia. Its newspaper is printed at 37 sites across the United States and at five additional sites internationally. Its design is in the style of local, regional, and national newspapers through the use of concise reports, colorized images, informational graphics, and popular culture stories. I like it just for that reason. I get a snapshot of everything, whether I agree or disagree, at least I'm informed. Give it a read and form your own opinion. I'd be interested to know.

I've been a reader of USA today print edition since its inception. When reading newspapers on mobile devices began gaining traction, I too began reading USA Today on my mobile devices. Because serving ads on a mobile device is clunky and disruptive to the experience many "mom and pop" dailies have gone the way of the typewriter. They were disrupted right out of business. Gannett, on the other hand, a multi-billion dollar operator of dailies and the USA Today, had all the human and financial resources of a NYSE listed conglomerate--untold $ billions in cash and untapped lines of credit to pivot and innovate before the digital train left the station. Fast forward. I finally bit the bullet and purchased a digital subscription to USA Today a few months ago, to gain access to "subscriber-only content"--you've seen them, these are the few stories that have a red alert above the headline, reading: "This story is accessible to subscribers only". Not only did I want access to ALL of USA Today's stories, but I was willing to pay for ad-free access to dispose of the disruptive ads that ruin the digital reading experience. For all that, I've been paying $12.99 per month. And now, for the rest of the story... For reasons I've been unable to figure out, I am still unable to unlock subscriber-only access for some stories. It's inconsistent. One story is fine, the next, directs me to a page to try to get me to purchase a digital subscription. Very frustrated with Gannett's customer-facing technology. I purchased my subscription through the iPhone (XI) app store. I have confirmed both on my iPhone (the subscriptions section under "general" in the settings) AND on the USA today app, which both state I'm an active digital subscriber with ad-free option. I've confirmed that my credit card tied to my Apple ID is being hit for $12.99 per month, but... When I attempt to resolve the situation with USA Today customer service, the rep informs me that he cannot locate my account, given my e-mail and address tied to my Apple ID. He keeps asking me for my USA Today "account number" to which I respond, I don't have an "account". I have a "subscription" that I purchased through the App Store. I was on hold and on the phone for over 1/2 hour without any satisfaction or options, except to cancel my $12.99 subscription (that I really don't want to cancel)! So here you have an entire industry that's been circling the drain for well over a decade, with arguably its biggest player, USA Today (Gannett), that spends millions to get people like me to actually pay for digital content and then cannot deliver it. I understand not delivering the print edition in 3 feet of snow. Delivering "subscriber only" content seems fairly straight forward. When one of the best funded news media outlets in the world, after many years of trying, is unable to execute a business model that works--but can't, it doesn't bode well for the longevity of USA Today or the written news business overall. Cancelling my subscription pains me, because I don't consume TV news--I consume all my news in written format.

It sounds so last century, but I enjoy reading newspapers, USA Today included. It's cool when you find places that still sell them.
