I like the news stories and shows that they have. The online news is easy to follow. If you are ever at the station, you have to visit the giant moss wall on the lobby. The station is directly behind Clyde's restaurant. The parking garage can get a bit confusing. Pay attention to where you park. Friendship Heights metro is also close by. read more

WTOP has been my go-to for 30 years. Sadly, they are under new ownership and this past year has been HORRIBLE. They are so biased. They used to be balanced. I have moved to 99.1 Bloomberg. Much better. read more

Traffic reports are not accurate. The announcer has no business in public broadcasting ("yeah let's hire the guy with the lisp, whose voice is never without the sound of spit mixed in, to speak every ten minutes - yeah, that's what a professional voice sounds like!") and it's just repetitive lightweight stuff. I was a news junkie for years because of WTOP. Over the last several years they have become to politicized IMHO. I stopped listening to them during the last two elections due to inaccurate or incomplete news, which became a opinion rather than news. I ask a lot, I want honesty, bad me. Today was the proverbial straw. Dave Ross post a story about a humanist whose opinion is that those who believe in God would do better finding another way to serve. I am not a great example of Christianity by any stretch of the imagination, but today is a important day in the Roam Catholic beliefs. So is it poor judgment, ignorance or a biased mean spirited bashing of Catholics? The latter, no doubt. And why not, it sells commercials and Catholics are going to sit around and take it. Right? WTOP hides behind NBC when I complained about the timing of the story. Doubt they will run a similar story on other religious days of observance? read more

For the past 3 years or so, I've been utilizing 103.9 WTOP on my alarm clock radio to wake me up in the morning. Because it's an all-news station, all the time, I think I liked the calming and soothing voices, as opposed to grating auto dealer ads, annoying DJs laughing hysterically, or the latest and greatest from the Black Eyed Peas. I still can't believe I actually used the repetitive siren wail of the buzzer mode in high school. Because I only used it to wake up, I never really took the time to listen to WTOP. It was usually "go off, lean forward, hit snooze, repeat" until I actually felt like getting up. Finally, after three years, the first time I actually listened to what they have to say was during the Snowpacalypse of 2010. I knew I didn't have to go to work, so I took the time to learn about road conditions, the latest weather, and updated closings...all from the comfort of my cozy, warm bed. WTOP is so-damn efficient. Traffic and weather is every ten minutes ("on the 8s"), covers every local story of interest,plus has a great bead on Federal news, of particular interest to this government employee. I also like the segments with local politicians, and the highlighting of things to do in DC for the week. WTOP's a service I've been using for years, but still just now discovered. Maybe I'll just leave it on in the mornings now, instead of snoozing to silence. It might even help me get up earlier. read more

WTOP is the greatest news, traffic, and weather radio station! I love this station. I can't believe no one has yelped WTOP yet. What are y'all listening to? WTOP has traffic and weather together on the eights. They have a Monday morning contest to determine the stupidest crook from the past week. They give gardening advice. They haul in local politicians once per week and let listeners call in to pepper them with tough questions. They tell you what's going on around town, in the theatrical world, museums, DVDs, festivals. They have this call-in question of the day on some local or national topic, like the Judge Sotomayor nomination to the SupCt. They have this "consumer protection" call for action segment that is just great! I mean this station is the best. They don't play any music per se. But they are affiliated with another station that does and they advertise that station by playing a few notes from Beethoven's 5th. :-) Plus, they don't bore you with a whole lot of mindless palaver. Almost everything they say is really newsworthy or lifeworthy. Today, they are all in their pajamas...apparently to represent for the sleep in for the cure. Wish I could have gone to work in my pajamas.... My favorite thing of ALL is kind of superficial...its the foghorn. If its foggy out, they use this sound effect (think Titanic disembarking) during traffic, to warn drivers to use their fog lights; and during the weather (of course). I love the foghorn! For a commuter in the DC area, there are two essential items: the smartphone app Waze and WTOP. Between the two of them, they make each day's commute in the DC area incredibly better. I can anticipate conditions ahead, quickly decide whether to use alternatives, and avoid that sense of total helplessness from being stuck at a dead stop in traffic. And by the way, we get sports, business and news in between the traffic and weather. In my evening commute I've switched from WAMU to WTOP because WTOP is so essential to my Fairfax to Alexandria commute. read more

It's the only station i know that has weather and traffic and skim through a bit of news, but they are painful to listen to sometimes. They constantly announce in a self-important voice : " From Richmond to the shenandoah..etc..World - Wide !!". Err, I doubt anybody outside this area listens to this local radio. The anouncers all have weird voices, some of them have difficulty talking past a certain speed, and their selection of "news" leaves a bit to be desired. You won't great any great insight about what's going on in the world listening to them that's for sure.. Still, when you're driving and just want to know the weather and traffic it does the job, you just have to catch them beetween their abundant commercials. read more

I'm a fan of WTOP for one reason, and one reason only. It gives traffic reports on the 8s about the parking lot that often is I-95 almost all the way to / from Richmond. With all my travels back and forth to NC, at least knowing how long the misery will last seems to lessen the blow - as well as provide a convenient escape over to Rt. 1 if needed. read more

I listen every day for the weather and traffic but I've noticed esp during the week they do not start at the eights like they are supposed to they try to do as many commercials as possible they are just ending later doesn't make sense I make a point not to buy whatever is being advertised read more

I am obsessed with making sure they start the traffic on the 8's. I listen constantly with my cell phone out to make sure they say the time and then start the traffic report. It is sick I know. Honestly they are late a lot of times. Still the best in town though. read more

I listen to nothing else both at home and in the car but WTOP radio station because of the all day news. However, I hate listening to the recent advertisement mimicking somebody with a very thick southern accent and immediately I have to turn it off. Its an insult to southerns so please, please get rid of that advertisement. Its disgusting. read more

I lsiten to WTOP all the time mainly for traffic and weather. But you also get a good idea whats going on and if anything big is happening and I am a fan. I myself am a conservative but the people there seem to give it to you pretty straight. They have political commantary but it is usually separate from news stories. I listen almost every morning and I am not even sure whether they are conservative or liberal but I defend them for doing a great job. I have heard Bruce Allen for many years and like the guy. Sometimes they interview people who absolutely are liberals, but I hear plenty of conservative types there also. There's plenty in the media for us conservatives to gripe about but give credit where credit is due. There is a reason these guys are the only game in town for news. read more

WTOP is great for traffic & weather as you scoot around the metro area. Rely on it every day. Web site news reporting is pretty bad.
