Competent But Off-Putting…read more I contacted SmartHelp for assistance with two specific tasks: to connect a new monitor and a new printer to my older desktop computer. Todd, from SmartHelp, does know his stuff, he is competent and took care of both of my asks. However, I found that Todd asked questions that I felt were not necessary. In addition I found his personal style and certain, what can only be described as business practices, too personal and thus off-putting. 1) As part of the job, Todd's first request was to input my personal information into his phone. I specifically found the requests for both my date of birth & my photo quite worrisome and unnecessary. 2) I found Todd's style of "up-selling" quite disconcerting. For example he said he wanted to take my laptop computer to his home to "set up properly." This, of course, would have presumably incurred a myriad of additional charges, none of which were discussed. He asked to take the laptop multiple times despite my repeated no's. 3) Without my permission Todd input my credit card information into his phone while I was out of the room! Unacceptable! In the end it felt to me that, beyond the requested tasks that were accomplished, I was also charged for his requests for my personal information, as well the time spent "up-selling." I found and consider these things to specifically be poor business practices. Be aware and be wary and further be prepared to say "no," i.e. don't let your guard down!

I took the phone to Aaron at Mobile madness where where he fixed my phone and restored it back to its previous smooth and spam less operating system. The tech talked her into mobile service and sold her a smartphone and service plan--the phone was later shipped to her. My mother had dementia. She and her elderly friend were unable to set up the phone, and there is no local customer service office in that city. My mom had no car, had just moved there, and had no other local support. I spent over 30 hours on the phone and made two in-person visits to my local Spectrum store trying to get her money refunded. Then, just today, I found out they ripped me off, too! When I upgraded my own phone through Spectrum, the phone support agent made it sound like I was getting a huge trade-in deal on my 1-year-old phone and would pay only $157. In reality, the $157 was the trade-in value--and I owed $842 for the new phone. This was a long conversation with the tech, and I was overjoyed with my deal. There is no universe in which I would have knowingly agreed to upgrade my 1-year-old phone....why, except for the fake deal of the century, apparently. They blatantly lied and buried the truth in the contract fine print. This company preys on the elderly in their own homes. They will take advantage of you if you let them. This feels like slavery to the company store.

If you want to "upgrade" and spend more you can do this on the web site in minutes. However if you want to reduce or cancel services a "in person" visit is necessary. Once at the retail outlet a sign in appointment is required. Staff seems completely unaware and not concerned how long the wait is and leave the service area for breaks and unexplained reasons for long periods of time. Currently on my fourth visit to return equipment after canceling a grossly over priced cable package.
