This is the only USCIS location that I've ever been to for interviewing my green card and citizenship. I have a good experience here. In a normal circumstance, I'd say I recommend this location but you can't really choose so good luck. You can only come inside 15 minutes before your appointment. I always came 30 minutes early and wait in the car to be sure I won't late. There's a lot of parking too. You need to show them your appointment notice for them to let you in. The security guards are serious but polite. After going through security, you need to go to the check-in booth so that they can notify your interviewer that you're there. Then you would go wait in the waiting area. The waiting area is spacious and usually doesn't have many people. You'd probably wait about 15 minutes before the officer calls you in. If you come in for a citizenship interview and you pass the test, the officer will tell you to wait in the waiting area to receive more information regarding the oath ceremony appointment. The 2 officers that interviewed me for my green card and citizenship were very nice and friendly. They made the interviews less scary. Side note: if you need to reschedule your interview (citizenship interview in my case), call the number on the interview notice. A representative will send the request over to the local office. You'll get a confirmation email saying they'll honor your request to change the appointment. This means you don't have to go to the interview anymore. They might not schedule you a new interview date until the original one has passed so if this is the case, you can even attend the original interview date if you can make it. read more

Had a great experience with my recent appointment and thought i should definitely leave a review and give the credit where its due. My appointment was setup for 8 AM and i arrived in there at 7:30 and got comfortably parked amongst the ample spaces available in the parking lot. At 7:45 I entered the building where the security guard greeted with a big smile and checked me in. Did the customary security screening and got in the line to get a ticket (you let the person and the desk know briefly about the reason for your visit) that would be assigned to me which then would be called out when the USCIS officer is ready to address my ask. Took my ticket and was directed to sit in the waiting area. Less than 10 minutes in and my number was called. Got to the station where the officer greeted in a very courteous fashion. It took about 10 minutes to get the job done and all of this was as smooth as it gets. All in all a great experience at the USCIS office. read more

The USCIS Field Office San Jose is staffed by professional and courteous federal immigration officers. The security and all staff members had smiles on their faces despite the high volume of applicants waiting in line and in the lobby. Most applicants appeared a bit nervous while they were waiting in line with some testing each other on the history and government portion while we waited. There is ample parking for applicants with armed security patrolling the area for this federal office. For those who rely on public transportation, the Santa Clara University Caltrain station is about 10 minutes walking distance away. He shouted his voice at me when I was simply asking a question . He called someone one out to help me and the lady asked him to call a supervisor . My wife and I had a great experience here for her Adjustment of Status interview. We got there almost 30 minutes early, but the security guard at the front counter told us to come back 15 minutes prior to the scheduled time. We stood in line at the front door, and they let only one applicant/couple in at a time to maintain social distancing. Once we got inside, we were greeted by that same security officer who politely asked us to show him our appointment letter, and he also needed to check our IDs. We then proceeded through airport-style security. The guards there were pretty friendly also. They only allow one person at a time at the security area, but overall, they were quite efficient and the line moved quickly. One more line: to check in with "reception" who looked at our appointment letter, IDs, and asked us questions related to COVID. He then directed us to the waiting room. My wife and I sat down waiting for our number to be called. We probably only waited for 10 minutes before our interviewing officer called us in. She was extremely polite and friendly. Very professional too. Our interview lasted 30 minutes. Overall, we were there for just over an hour and had a wonderful experience! read more

I thought my experience was isolated, but from reading these reviews, it seems that security guards at this center habitually and repeatedly harass and are inappropriate towards women. This was my experience today too. When I was in line for security, the two male security officers ask me about the plastic clips (literally the size of my thumbnail) in my hair that's keeping my bun in place. I explain that it's plastic and they won't set off the alarm. Then one of the guards tells me that I should let my hair down "just in case". That seems a bit weird, but whatever - I'm allowed to keep my engagement and wedding rings on. I chalk it up to them wanting to make sure that I'm not hiding anything in my bun. Cool. When I let my hair out, they direct me step through the metal detector and as I'm waiting for my bin on the other side, the guard who took my hair clips gives them back to me with a creepy-ass smile and says "See? it's so much better with your hair down". Cue the other guard to agree and tell me "you should leave it down today, it looks so much better". This is NOT acceptable and made me incredibly uncomfortable. I am stunned, but after reading some of the other posts, it seems that being creepy towards women and harassing them is a common practice at this center. My originally arrived on a k1 visa and we have utilized this center for the processing of her two and ten-year permanent residency. The center is divided into two areas - one for quick biometrics processing, and the other for interviews and more complex case handling. Importantly, they no longer accept walk-ins for appointment scheduling and case status updates. These have to be handled by phone now, where it can be a challenge to access a live representative. Biometrics is a breeze at this location. Come in either at your scheduled time and date, or earlier as a walk-in (slightly longer wait times). They process people quickly. We have never had to wait for more than one hour from start to finish. Expect multi hour waits on the interview side. Security at the front has gone downhill. The older Filipino gentlemen at the front are unprofessional and seem to enjoy harassing and jostling around visitors. We get major Duterte vibes from these two. After security, the staff and professional and efficient. read more

I went here yesterday for biometrics and had a very pleasant experience. I reached about half an hour before my appointment time and was in and out in less than 15minutes. The biometrics process was pretty straightforward. One needs to go through security check first (it helps if you just carry your id and appointment letter inside to speed up the process). Next go to the reception counter at the biometric area, the staff will hand out a form to fill up. After reviewing the filled forms they will issue a token number. You are called by token number and your finger prints, photo, signatures etc are taken. That's it. All the staff that I interacted with were pleasant and helpful. For those complaining about security check, you should know this is standard procedure followed by USCIS and US consulates/embassy all around the world and there is nothing new about it. read more

The San Jose USCIS staff is very professional and nice. I had a great experience every time coming for my appointments. I had my green cards' interviews and the citizenship interview there. I also had a couple of appointments just to ask questions about my case. Every time officers were very friendly, understanding, and not strict at all. I was very nervous but they made me feel better during the interviews. The only huge downside is that they are very slow at processing cases. I waited forever and had to live with expired green card for a while. I wish they hire more people to process cases faster. read more

This time we were cutting really close to our travel date again to UK, and we couldn't get any date for biometric appointment online. We took a chance and walked in. The officer was really polite and helpful and kindly let us in. Our documents were checked and we were accommodated right away. We were in and out in 20 minutes. Had a very smooth experience. Note: this review is only for the visa biometrics department. "I DON'T HAVE TO LISTEN TO YOU!" This is a direct quote of what the employee kept telling me when I tried to explain my situation. This is also a great phrase to sum up the customer service at this ****hole. Here's some background: I am moving to the UK and since my start date is coming up soon, my company paid $1600 for an expedited service, which allows me to come in for the biometrics on a first-come, first-serve basis. The fine print on the receipt says so. So I came in at 7:15 a good 45 minutes before the office opens and patiently waited for the doors to open. As soon as I walk in I tell the employee about the expedited service and proceed to show him my paperwork. The employee doesn't care to see the paperwork and tells me to have a seat if I don't have an appointment. When I plead to explain that I have paid for an expedited process, he yells at me: "I DON'T HAVE TO LISTEN TO YOU." I try to plead my case to another employee but get the same attitude. Nobody was willing to even look at my receipt for the expedited process. I go to have a seat and immediately call my immigration rep. Turns out that the expedited service is only available in 9 offices across the US and Santa Clara is not one of them. SF is the closest. Honest mistake on my end. I go to the employee to apologize for the misunderstanding and explain to them that they're not a premium center and that it would be appreciated if next time they could just redirect me to the right location. My advice isn't appreciated: "I DON'T HAVE TO LISTEN TO YOU." Sure, you don't have to but since you work in customer service it could help. We could avoid all this confrontation. They employees at this center clearly don't enjoy their job (maybe life too) and take it out on the people going through the visa process. I almost forgot to mention the harrassment I received when I tried to charge my phone while sitting down and waiting. If I can't charge my phone, why do you have outlets in the seating area? If you're looking for worse customer service than the DMV you've found your spot! Go to an alternative center if you can. These people don't know anything about their job and prefer to yell at you than to hear you out. Don't forget!! They don't have to listen to you! Lol read more

My wife and I came here for an emergency appointment. We are in the middle of the immigration process. We applied for the emergency travel document which allow my wife - non citizen to leave and re-enter the U.S. At first, we were denied because of the lack of emergency proof. they asked us to provide more proof. We came back the second with every information we could get to prove our emergency of leaving the country in urgent. We got denied the 2nd time; we then asked if we can speak to the acting director and hopefully have her reconsider her decision about our case. We wanted to visit our grandmother because her health is in critical condition. Everything went pretty great until the acting director came and talked to us. Not only that she denied us but she also talked to us with a rude attitude. she also said our documents do not meet her criteria because we did not have a doctor letter saying that our grandmother was going to die. she repeated that sentence a few times, stating that my grandma is not related to me since my grandma is not my mom or my dad. So she does not approve our request for emergency because our grandmother is not going to die yet.....what was she thinking? so base on her criteria, she only approves for emergency travel only if somebody dies? "it is not like your grandma is going to die tomorrow? she is home and well." "Your grandma is not related to you like your mother and father" "your grandma situation is not critical enough to be an emergency". "I will give you an approve if there is a doctor letter saying that your grandma is going to die tomorrow". My grandma is 80 years old, she felt the stair and got injury of the thorax. these sentences from her pissed me off, and my wife bursted in tear right after she heard it. I was very impressed with the leniency at the Immigration office. My husband and I have been trying to get him legalized for about 7 years now because the first time we applied for his green card we hadn't been married for 2 years yet, so they only gave him a temporary green card that expired. Now, I'm usually very organized and nag my husband to get on the same level as me, but this time it was me that almost screwed everything up. I did not even realize that my drivers license had expired, and that was my form of legal ID for our appointment. Luckily, they allowed it since it only been expired for about a week. Phew! Thank goodness! We could not find a babysitter for our 2 year old daughter so she had to join us. Now, mind you, the office is extremely quiet. They has a little corner with a table and crayons for kids, but that's about it. They make it pretty known that kids aren't exactly welcome. Sorry! I don't have the luxury of a 24/7 babysitter. That being said, one of the ladies did go out of her way to interact with my daughter for a little bit and give her some special attention. After that, though, we were given dirty looks by everybody in there. When we were finally called back, my daughter was obviously bored, like a two year old would be, and did not want to sit in one place. The man who was interviewing us said that my husband could take her back out to the waiting room to fill out the form he needed to, & I can stay in the office to get my portion of the interview done. That's cool! After about 10 minutes, he walked me out so he could grab my husband and we noticed that my husband and daughter were outside. Come to find later when we left, they actually asked my husband to leave because my daughter was crying too loudly. What?!?! My husband had to come all the way back through security to get back into the office for his interview and I sat out in our car with my daughter to keep her entertained. The man that interviewed us was very polite and tried to make the process simple and easy for us because he could tell it was a hard time. Overall, the way they conduct business is very professional during the actual process, but they need to be a little more accommodating to families. Yesterday I stopped by this place to request an emergency advance parole for a family Mende who is sick in my country. First time I process this & go through this. A year ago lost my dad to the same decease my aunt has, diabetes & other deceases related to the same thing. They explained to me they cannot process that as a walking since it's not an immediate family member. Dad/mother/sons. Etc. Which i understand & I respect their rules and laws. I'm not there to demand them to make exceptions or change the rules for me. This has been a very difficult process dealing with what could be another loss. & first time requesting this process. My 3 stars review is for the poorly customer service, I understand their job can be stressful. But treating people the way I was talked to like I was an idiot is not okay. We are all adults & we deserve respect. This is the first time I get BAD service at USCIS, I've been to the San Francisco location, and always treated with respect. I appreciate the guidance they gave me at the end on what to do, but really shouldn't be like that. I was polite & respectful to them at all times. The the more respectful I was the most I felt discriminated. If you are not a U.S citizen you will always get treated this way. Sadly bc I've been in this country 20 years and I respect the laws & pay taxes. & still I get treated like I'm at the DMV or being judge in court. They advise I should mail the paperwork through mail. Which can take a process of 4-6 months. But sadly the emergency is now. Hopefully is not so late. My advice to people who come in, be polite & respectful. They are the power & as much as we feel mistreated sadly we have to take it. The final decision is up to the person helping you. read more

The actual physical location and parking are fine. The wait is not too bad, if you show up on time a 1 hour wait tops. Most of the actual immigration agents I have encountered were professional and better behaved than your typical DMV. The agents are moving to get people processed efficiently (or as efficiently as possible for a bureaucracy).The location is relatively quiet and clean which is a huge relief. The downside is they employ the same slack-jawed, inattentive, rude, and incompetent high school drop outs here that the TSA does as security guards. They do not say "please" or "thank you" or even make direct eye contact when speaking to you the way people who havent been raised in barns do. The people running the metal detector are usually gossiping and giggling amongst themselves like high school dropouts and NOT paying attention to visitors in line. They like to make themselves feel important by making unnecessary snide comments. There is sometimes a fat guy who greets you and he has the manners of a mostly deaf-blind German man -- meaning he doesn't react to anything you tell him and mutters stuff that might be English who knows. Also, you will ALWAYS be directed to the wrong line by them. And there are only 2 lines you can go to. Saw 3 security guards tell a woman repeatedly to go to the wrong line after she explicitly told each one why she was there. Truly they are idiots. The funny part is, same as the TSA, security guards here are not white and have accents like most other recent immigrants. I guess they need to make themselves feel superior to visitors by making the very simple process of walking 20 feet to your appointment as irritating and disorganized as possible. read more

The reason I rate them low is that we went for a biometrics appointment today and one of the security personnel who was checking my id suddenly started shouting not to remove my mask. Administrative staff was helpful and fast. However, security guards were completely inappropriate and one security guard harassed me in the parking lot. Two security guards checking bags wouldn't stop asking about my ethnicity and made inappropriate political jokes about my ethnic background when I was in line. While inappropriate and annoying, especially at the USCIS office, I normally wouldn't bother complaining about this kind of behavior because it happens so much I usually try to keep things moving. However, the harassment I encountered in the parking lot with another security guard was shockingly out of line. When I walked to my car, a security guard was blocking my car door so I could not get in. The only legitimate reason I could think of was that I was parked in an unauthorized space, but when I approached, he said, "This is my car." When I had no response, he said, "Just joking, my car is over there," while still blocking my car door. He started asking a series of completely inappropriate and invasive questions about what I was doing at the USCIS office, why I was there, seemingly unsatisfied with my answer that I was there for a meeting. I was trapped because I couldn't get into the car without speaking to him. For a split moment, I thought I had to answer him because he was an officer, who could probably hurt me or get me in trouble. Finally, his questions got way out of line as he made more racialized assumptions, making it clear his questions were far beyond any possibility that he was just making small talk inappropriately. I cornered my way into getting into my car and told him that I needed to leave, shutting the door because he would not stop asking invasive questions about my visit. If I didn't close the door, he could've gone on for a lot longer. I was one of the only women who came alone to the office this afternoon and it was apparent that I was treated differently because of this. If you're anxious about your appointment, I'd recommend bringing a friend or family member. read more

I did "walk-in" for my biometrics/fingerprinting. My appointment date was two weeks from now but I had made family commitments for that period (trip to another state). I explained to the officer and she politely told me to wait along with other walk-in applicants as they need to serve appointment-based people first. I got there around 8am, Monday and the room was already filling up. But they work very fast and I was able to have my turn past 9am. She gave me a short form to fill out, and after, a token number. The whole process of fingerprinting and photographing took around 5 min. The personnel is not super nice, but they are also not rude at all. They need to be strict as the building/office is security sensitive. And they can't have too many people inside. And I am just relieved to get things done! read more

I had my interview here on September 10. My interviewing officer was wonderful and I passed my interview and everything was perfect. I was told to be at the ceremony at 10 am on September 19th at the Campbell heritage theater. This is where my problem begins. After the ceremony is over they have the option to register to vote and apply for a passport. I apply for a passport. Everyone that I know who applied for a passport got theirs in two weeks except for me and my father. We go onto the passport website and there's no knowledge of our application existing. I've called numerous people trying to get through. I can't apply for another passport because they took my naturalization certificate. I have asked everyone I have come in contact with (1800 numbers) what is the process for passports. Who brings it to the San Francisco passport office, no one can tell me. I need a passport ASAP, I have an international flight in two weeks. I need answers and I need information. Maybe a representative from the San Francisco passport office came down for that part, I'm not sure. But someone lost my application and I NEED a passport! read more

My INFOPASS appointment was at 2:45, Came at 2:40 pm, pass the security check and enter the waiting room. There are not more than 5 people waiting there. However, I still waited for 45 minutes before talking to an officer. I was querying about my pending I-485 case, which is out of normal processing time. The case was current in December 2016 but online status still shows "fingerprint fee received". The office checked my status in the system, told me that a decision has been made on my case, but the online status is not updated yet. She let me call USCIS. I called the next day and was able to talk to Tier 2 representative. I told the rep my pending I-485 case status is not updated online. But the rep said she didn't get any updates and my case is still being processed. So the USCIS field office and the USCAS customer service on the phone has different reply about my pending I-485. I was confused. The lesson learned is that INFOPASS is almost useless for speeding up the pending I-485 cases. read more

Going to a USCIS office is a scary experience because your immigration papers depend on the interview or biometric appointment you will have here. You can ONLY go here if you have an appointment. DO NOT go here if you don't have an appointment, you will be sent away. If you go you will see this guy behind the counter who will ask you for the letter you received for the appointment and your ID. Don't bring food or something to drink, they will take it off you. The guy behind the counter told me to put it in the car (so no trash can for me). So you got passed hurdle nr 1, the guy behind the counter. The next step is standing in line and putting your stuff through a scanner and go through this gate. So take your shoes off and turn your phone off. The guys there are very nice so unless you have something weird on you, you should be ok. You then are sent to a counter with a lady who then will send you to the room for biometrics and fingerprinting or the other room (I think it's for the interviews). I only had to do my biometrics so I never been to the interview room. When you get your biometrics done stand in line and get the guy at the counter to give your paperwork to fill in. I was a total idiot and filled in my form and just sat there waiting. Don't do that! Take your stuff, stand in line again and get your ticket. So when you have your ticket somebody will come and get you (don't worry about the gloves, with me it didn't mean anything - yay :) ). You are brought to some weird cubicle and there they will fill in your details in a computer. Then they take your prints and in my case a photo and asked for my signature. You will be waiting here a lot so take a book or magazine! read more

Attended my wife's citizenship ceremony at this location this morning. For a process that took maybe four years or so, it was interesting that the ceremony itself only lasted about 10 minutes. Arrived 15 minutes before the ceremony was scheduled to begin. Took about 5 minutes to get through security. No electronic devices are normally allowed inside (cell phones, ipods, cameras, etc.) except for this ceremony only when they permit cameras. Clearing the metal detectors, you'll proceed to Rm 160 where you'll check-in and those becoming citizens will be asked to sit next to one another in the order you've arrived and the guests will be offered any seat in the back. The hardest part came next: the waiting! The ceremony was supposed to start at 8:30 a.m. but we didn't get going until about 9 a.m. Officer Gonzalez gave us a warm welcome. Next came the oath, then the pledge of allegiance. Normally a video message from the president would be played, but since Obama is new, they didn't have one prepared yet. Then we watched a video which was actually a music video the tune of I'm Proud to be an American. They probably should have passed out tissues since I'm sure it was an emotional moment for some. Then, they passed out the certificates of naturalization and we were done. The entire ceremony took less than 15 minutes. As we walked out, the security guard and others wished everyone congratulations. Overall, a smooth operation facilitated by friendly staff. read more

Just left the field office, Staff are rude, nasty and very unprofessional. I only asked to get an extension stamp in my passport due to a family emergency and the agents told me to leave. I'm married to an American citizen since 2013 and can't leave the country and come back because they didn't even give me a temporary green card. read more

I have to use this location to help my applicants for processing in the US Army (MAVNI Program) The military coordinator is great! She helped me out a lot with a situation I had with one of my future soldiers. The security for this place is very well conducted. Its a govt. building so you will go through a metal detector. DON'T bring any form of a weapon.You will go to 2 booths to get your ticket nd to figure out which person you need to see. Just like the DMV if you are a walk in you might be waiting for a long time. I HIGHLY suggest you make an appointment and show up 10-15 minutes before the appointment time. Parking is usually fine but this place can get crowded. Don't get an attitude with an of the employees.
