There should be a negative 5 star rating for UT HEALTH, Athens, TX! I felt pain leaving them one star because they certainly don't deserve a star, at all!!!! On July 24, I was transported by ambulance due to dangerously high blood pressure, which paramedics could not even obtain from my lower arm due to severity. My BP remained critically elevated upon arrival at ETMC. I was diagnosed with a urinary tract infection and "stress/anxiety" and was discharged with a dangerously high bp 160/103 and without any antibiotic treatment for the UTI. The next day, I called the ER to clarify this, and the staff confirmed that I was, in fact, diagnosed with a UTI -- yet no medication was ever prescribed. I was forced to visit my primary care physician to obtain an appropriate antibiotic (Macrobid). This was a failure in basic medical care and patient safety. On August 3, I returned to the ER with worsening symptoms: fever, chills, rigors, full-body muscle stiffness, and uncontrollable vomiting. This time, the diagnoses were completely different -- gallstones, an umbilical hernia, and interstitial cystitis. Not once reporting pain, I was offered Tramadol, a narcotic I explicitly refused. Yet someone from the staff still gave me a foil wrapped Tramadol, "for later" and called in a prescription for Tramadol after I was discharged -- without my consent and without medical necessity. Cephalexin was also called in at that time -- well after the original diagnosis of UTI, and only after I had already been forced to seek treatment elsewhere. The physician involved in my first visit, Dr. B. Smith, was extremely unprofessional, dismissive, and rude. His behavior reflected a lack of compassion and clinical judgment, and he failed to provide even the most basic level of care. The diagnostic discrepancy between the two visits, and the delayed prescribing of essential medication, speak volumes about the dysfunction at this facility. This experience has left me not only frustrated, but genuinely concerned about the safety of other patients under your care. I will be choosing Christus Health for my future medical needs. read more

I wish I could give negative stars. They don't seem to care very much for their patients at all. Came to the hospital today about 6:30 PM. If you've ever had gall bladder issues, you know the pain that comes with them. Got in a room in the ER about 7 ish. They gave me NOTHING for pain until after 8, and then basically just dumped it in me and left. The morphine did nothing for my pain at all. Finally, after more than two hours in a room in the ER I got some pain relief. About 10:30, the doctor finally appeared (first and only visit!) and told me that he'd 1) be right back with a time for surgery tomorrow and 2) have me admitted. It's now 12:37 am. Called the nurses station for status. Seems my room order was JUST put in AND with tomorrow being Mother's Day there's no set time for surgery (she really said that). so I'm here, still in the ER where it's impossible to sleep, the night before I'm "scheduled" for surgery. Drive to Tyler or Kaufman. Trust me on that. You shouldn't have to deal with rudeness and incompetence when you're so sick that you require surgery. These people are HORRIBLE read more

I was having a severe migraine and not at home, I was hesitant to go here based on reviews; however I could not have asked for better care! They got me in, took vitals, had me hooked up to an IV and getting much needed pain relievers in me. They would not rest until I felt better. I wish Dallas had such an attentive ER team. read more

My mother got in a bad car accident on Friday. She was taken to UT health in Athens even though she requested to go to Tyler. I know legally they have to take you to the closest hospital. They did an abdominal and head CT and found 3 rib fractures. They didn't do any other X-rays or scan any other areas. When they discharged her, she stood up to walk and her knee was in extreme pain. They then did an X-ray on her knee and found she had a break in her tibia and fibula. They sent her home with Celebrex, albuterol inhaler and a muscle relaxer. Celebrex is more for chronic pain caused by arthritis NOT acute pain! And they only prescribed it for once a day! An inhaler isn't going to prevent pneumonia. The only thing it will do is help you to take a deep breath, which you can do with an incentive spirometer. They didn't even give her a spacer with it so that completely defeats the purpose of the inhaler. Oh and they gave her crutches for her knee. How the hell are you supposed to use crutches with broken ribs?! Two days later she was still in so much pain so we took her to the ER in Tyler. She wasn't able to do hardly anything. They did X-rays and a CT. Turns out she had 10 rib fractures! 10! Not sure how the hell you could miss that. They gave her Tylenol with codeine. She is now able to walk with a walker and go to the bathroom with less assistance than before. This is the 3rd time one of my family members has been brought to UT Health in Athens and got the worst care possible. DO NOT go here! read more

Go ANYWHERE else. While the evening staff of the ER were pleasant (unlike the day staff), they don't tell you anything. They don't tell you what they're doing, they don't tell you the results of the tests they run, they don't tell you that the doctor is NOT coming back to talk to you about anything. Even the people I talked to about insurance just used jargon when I asked about paying them - it took several times back and forth before I was able to translate what she was saying into what was happening with the bill. I've talked to a couple of other people since then, one of whom told me he wouldn't take an armadillo hit on the road there. But I don't live here, and I didn't know any better. read more

2 and a half year old son fell and had a concussion. Get here at 9 pm they tell us not to let him sleep until doctor sees him. 3:30 am still have not seen the doctor. Having to fight to keep son awake. Nurses still have not even checked him out. They are too busy talking about their personal lives and on facebook to do anything. WTF. I would understand if they were busy, but on facebook! Bunch of crap! read more

ER visit. We are from out-of-state and had an accident and ended up at ETMC ER. Everyone was very kind and helpful. I was thoroughly impressed with each person's efficiency and skill from Michael, the triage nurse to Katie from X-ray. Brad and Dr. Rowe took great care of my daughter. It's never a good time when you're at the ER, but I would highly recommend ETMC. read more

While traveling to my home I experienced a medical emergency and was brought to UT Health Athens. The doctor and nurses in the emergency room were super efficient and I was quickly triaged. My emergency required I be hospitalized and I was admitted and placed in the second floor. I can honestly say that I have never before experienced the super medical care provided by the doctors and nurses which tended to me. Kudos to the fine nurses, Patty, Jana, Miranda, and Kelsey. Your professionalism and dedication to patient care is outstanding. Thank you Dr Mettecal as well as nurses aides Laura and Ashley. Super folks and super facility. read more
