We stopped here for lunch on a long drive based on Yelp reviews. You people didn't let us down with your strong reviews. Service is prompt and pleasant. Ambience is well-executed exposed brick hipster. Beer selection is formidable. We had two pizzas, a margherita and a guanciale+potato to sample their range. I had high expectations and Vagabond Pizza exceeded them!!!! I have three boys who look sideways at anything that isn't Whataburger, and when we left, they all said we should go back for dinner the same day. The menu is a little fancy-sounding, but our server said they can easily make a plain cheese or pepperoni. We ended up getting two Sofia's and one Aria and one appetizer salad for me. The salad was good, but the pizza was better. My 16 year old son ate his whole pizza and was full. My 11 year old son at half of his - my husband and I finished the other half. My husband ate his whole Aria - it comes with several scoops of herbed ricotta which he was unsure of but ended up liking. The best part was dessert!!!! Although, it's hard to say that because everything was amazing. We had a piece of chocolate cake, three layers of cake with chocolate ganache between the layers and a coffee icing. We also had the salted chocolate chip cookie sandwiches with fudge creme and cream cheese dipping sauce. The cookies didn't even need the dipping sauce, but the pizza crusts were great in the sauce! I would gladly order two servings of the cookie dessert as my meal. We met the owner, Jessica. She was very friendly and hospitable. You can tell she takes a lot of pride in creating an amazing guest experience. It was cozy- feeling, right down to the linen napkins and silverware on the tables (like at Grandma's house) and the Tide stain stick and chandelier in the restroom. If we lived in town, we would be here at least once every two weeks. It's perfect for a girls' night out, date night, even lunch with three boys!! Upon arrival at the Vagabond we were told it would be a 30-40 minute wait. Which is pretty normal to wait at this restaurant due to the limited seating. The hostess ended up taking down our name and number and stated once a table opened up they would give us a call. Perfect. The issue began when we can back after 30 minutes to check how much longer was the wait. The hostess ended up taking down the wrong number, but stated once a table opens up you'll be next. Again, perfect. Then a table opened-but instead of offering it to us it was offered up to another party. So I approached the hostess again. She stated she did not feel the table was adequate for our party of two adults and one child. Then offered us to sit at the bar with our child after we've been waiting for over an hour for a table. We told her no that won't work due to our child. Then stated that we just would have to wait again for another table. By this time we've already waited enough. This hostess then asked us to leave because they were not able to make us happy. Basically due to the hostess's not able to properly write a number down and their inability to ask if a table was adequate for our party we were asked to leave. I heard about Vagabond through word of mouth or an article in a magazine or from a carrier pigeon, idk. I am just glad I found out about them. I was going to book them for a birthday party but never got around to it. When the opportunity came for me to organize the company Christmas party I knew it was going to be Vagabond for the win. I picked the location and the food to be served. The owner, Jason, and his wife showed up with the mobile wood burning oven and the best food we could ask for. He was so helpful in the planning process leading up to the event, straight forward on pricing, and stellar on choices as far as toppings. I was beyond impressed that he was down with using local ingredients in the cuisine. Every pizza that came out was fantastic- there were no complaints from anyone at the event. The novel idea of having a company event catered by a food truck parked outside our event space was a great way to get people up and moving and social beyond their comfort cliques. People were grubbing with enthusiasm (the delicious wine inside did not hurt either). Dinner ended with amazing blackberry cobbler served with the most delicate vanilla whipped cream. Ahhhhh. This is the perfect date night out place to go if you are a drinker. They have lots of wine to choose from. The ambiance is amazing and feels like you are from somewhere not in Abilene. This is a bar type place. If you are not a drinker, the other choices are small and come in small containers. Last night after the first tiny glass of ice tea we were told when asking for a refill "sorry, we ran out of tea"...no offer for some other option, and yes, still had to pay for tea. If you are from west Texas and like ranch with your pizza, be prepared to pay $2 for a tablespoon of dressing. $2! And now the pizza, it was good. I really liked the fresh bread that it came on. What it was missing was toppings. I get it, this is fancy "Austin like" pizza, but come on, add enough toppings to flavor the bread. I'm from and live in Denver, but I recently visited my sister who lives in Abilene. We had a girls night out and she decided on Vagabond for dinner. I was skeptical at first, because the last time I visited her I was disappointed by other local bars and restaurants, especially when it comes to wine selection or mixology. I used to work for the restaurant in Four Seasons here in Denver, and was fully trained on different wines and was lucky enough to take some sommelier courses. Vagabond blew me away with their wine list. I could tell they put a lot of thought and research into it. Not only did they have a great variety of local wine, but also some indulgent, exotic wines from Italy, Spain, and Argentina. The wine list was traditional, but was also posh, progressive and very diverse. The vibe inside the restaurant is industrial and trendy, but still very warm and relaxed. Coming from a city with a booming bar and restaurant industry, I have sampled enough to know a gem when I find it. I can't wait to visit my sister again, and to have another wonderful dinner at Vagabond. read more

Jason uses a unique mobile pizza oven, which exerts extremely high heat, to quickly create a beautiful pizza pie before your eyes in mere minutes. My favorite pizza of theirs i the Gremolota (sp), but all their pizzas taste awesome! They prepare the pizza out in the open. Best pizza hands down! It was Vagabond's sneak peek weekend and well worth the drive from Dallas. We were invited by the owners. We arrived and put our name on the list and headed to the bar, which is made out of the old floors of the building. While waiting for a table, we ordered the bread with ricotta herb spread. I could have eaten the ricotta and herb spread without the bread it was so flavorful. We ordered some local beers, Pappy Slkoum for the win. The wait went buy quick since you can chat and watch the pizzas being made. Once seated, our waiter, Christian, was prompt to greet us and get our drink order. Water is brought out in its own glass container for the table. There are cloth napkins and silverware is already in a container on the table. Laid back with a little flair! The waiter can make or break a dining experience and Christian was great. He wasn't hovering or absent. He stopped by the perfect amount of times. We ordered the Gia, Sofia and the Aria. All the pizzas we perfectly cooked and damn delicious. The 3 pizzas were enough to share between the 3 of us with still some to take back to Dallas for a midnight snack. The ingredients were the best. The pizza was not drowning in sauce or cheese. It was the perfect amount to compliment the dough. My favorite of the 3 (by a hair) was the Aria (it had dollops of the ricotta cheese herb blend on top). Vagabond has a good selection of local, Texas and other beers revolving through their taps. There are so many things I love about this place and just one thing I hate. First of all they have wonderful wines. I could go here for just this. They have a good selection of beers also. Lots of local favorites. Their food is amazing. Even though I'm not eating bread at the moment I still have a good selections of salads and some weeks they have a meatball appetizer. I do wish they catered more to us on that diet adventure but that's not that bad. What I hate is the group of tables lined along the wall on the same side of the bar that are way too close together. You feel like you are sitting with the table next to you. You can hear their conversations. It's so awkward and honestly I second guess if I want to eat there sometimes because of it. Wood fired pizza served the right way! We had the breadsticks with basil butter, it's really good sized pieces of crusty baguette and the basil butter is on point. We also had the Verona, Margharita and Rosalyn pizzas, my favorite by far was the Verona. Tender pieces of chicken with a delicious but simple sauce drizzled with pesto, oh my lord it was delicious!
