This is the most abusive, least professional experience with a CPA me or my husband have ever had…read more Today, I was listening to a phone conversation between my husband and one of the founders of BTAS, Paul Totaro, who is without a doubt one of the least professional people in this industry, and I was floored by Paul's behavior. During this call, Paul yelled at my husband - berated him, really - for daring to suggest that the communication hadn't been ideal to date, instead of listening and attempting to explain or fix the situation to our satisfaction. After several instances where Paul or his subordinates hadn't bothering showing up for scheduled meetings, an almost complete lack of responsiveness to email communication over the course of literally several months, and at least half a dozen redundant requests of us from new names at BTAS that kept getting added to conversations in lieu of old ones (apparently they have a lot of turnover in their employee ranks, and I can see why) to connect them with our bookkeeper - apparently no one had saved records of our conversations in files that would have eliminated redundant work for my husband, which is kind of one of the benefits of hiring a CPA firm in the first place - we felt we needed this call to clear the air, and politely inform them that we were going to switch to another firm for the remainder of our tax work. But that's not how it went. After we mentioned this, incredibly, Paul went into a fit of rage and yelled at my husband "well we don't want anything to do with you either!" We felt like some authoritarian principal had called us into his office to berate us, rather than what was really happening, which was us politely firing a service provider that we thought was at least prepared to be professional about it and, who knows, maybe could have some introspection about the situation as a company who failed to meet at least one client's expectations (seems like, from reviews, it's way more than one, however). We came to BTAS with high trust through someone who used to be involved in their day-to-day client relations. I see that their only positive review to date references this person, but unfortunately that review is old and since we started working with BTAS, this person stopped working day-to-day with the company. That is where all our problems began - once we got kicked to Paul and the revolving cadre of his subordinates. I hope no one else has to experience this, and if this review can dissuade others from getting trapped in this sort of abusive professional relationship, only to be left late into tax season to start over, then I'm glad I posted it.

As such, I will leave this review open for change, and hope to update it for the better based on future interactions. On the plus side, I believe the firm conducted an accurate filing for us. From the get go he was very unprofessional, unorganized, and said a few questionable things. When asked about my marital status I told him I was filing single, but live with my fiancé. After hearing that I am engaged he made negative comments about getting married and filled me on his divorce...really awkward Here I am 2+ months later with no return in sight. I have reached out to Gray & Associates to confirm that my return was sent to the IRS and no response. I took it upon myself to speak with an agent at the IRS and she informed me that my return was submitted 24 days after my initial meeting. Do not pay the $300 for the terrible service and awful marriage advice.

Between Mar.1 and April 1 I received ONE email asking a question then he didn't get back to me again until April 5 after I gave him a deadline of 2 days before. He said my deadline was amusing. Mr. Gray may be a good accountant, I would not know at this point, but his customer service is lacking. In the future, a more respectable business practice would be to inform me right away if you cannot take on my return so I have ample time to find someone else. As of right now every accountant I have spoken to is not taking new 2018 returns and I'm going to have to file an extension. I am unwilling to work with Mr. Gray at this point and cannot recommend him to anyone else because of his unreliable communication.

She's done my taxes 2 years in a row now and will continue doing so as long as she'll have me] I'm going to keep it short because I could go on for a long long while about just how great Sandy has been for me as my CPA. But first, a quick story... I found Sandy on Yelp the year after I got back into freelancing. The year before, I had met someone through a friend who said "Oh I can do your taxes -- and I only get paid 10% of what you get BACK, so if you owe anything, you don't pay me." Sounds great, right? Yeeeeeah that's illegal. And Sandy pointed that out to me when I first met with her. This guy created a turbotax account in my name and then filed taxes not as my representative but as me. That means that if any issues (or god forbid audits) came up, I have zero protection. Sandy rescued me. She was patient and worked with me and even went through and sorted my "shoebox o' doom" just filled to the brim with uncategorized, unorganized receipts. AND THEN ... she *apologized* that I owed 3k in taxes (thought it'd be WAY higher). Fast forward one year -- she's still my CPA (and will be for years to come) -- and this year I owed 11k and was THRILLED to pay that because Sandy saved me SO much more than that. If you need a LEGITIMATE CPA to help you with: - setting up accounting systems - doing your taxes - helping you organize your finances You're going to have a tough time finding one who will produce better work at a better rate (AND care about the work) than Sandy. 11 out of 10 stars (that's how you math, right Sandy?)
