Dr Wells literally saved my life. She not only saw that a cyst was abnormal but she was super proactive, booking me immediately with an amazing surgeon oncologist and booking all the necessary tests. Thanks to her I had surgery within 17 days from the first visit with her. I was diagnosed with stage 1, which is rare as many times this kind of cancer is missed or too much time is spent between visits, consultations and testing. Her office was very quick in organizing everything. I can't recommend her enough. And she is also very nice. read more

If you value your sense of well-being, do not go to this doctor. I had surgery with her 6 years ago and I still wake up in pain every day and have had to have subsequent surgeries to correct the damage done by her. A few months after having surgery with her, I knew something was very wrong and when I told her, she saw me a few times and then started dodging my calls and not replying to messages for months. She botched the surgery, didn't provide adequate after care and most importantly, did not disclose all of the potential complications of the surgery. If you are looking for general gynecological care, she may be for you. If you need surgery, do not let a GYN/Obstetrician perform it. Her poor technique left me damaged for life. read more

I don't know if its because of all of the glowing reviews here, but my experience with Dr. Wells has gone significantly downhill. I will not be returning. Dr. Wells is still as nice as ever but when I went for my yearly check-up this year, her office was extremely over-crowded, she didn't meet with me in her office for a quick chat prior to the exam like she used to, and her new staff members seemed less competent and were DOWN-RIGHT RUDE. One of the nurses made a bitchy comment about my weight, and I'm not over-weight by any stretch of the definition. A few weeks later, I went in to pick up a prescription, and I was charged for an office visit (even though I didn't even go into an exam room or talk to Dr. Wells) AND after I mailed my payment in for the charges my insurance didn't cover, they sent me ANOTHER bill for the exact same charges 3 months later. I had to mail them a copy of the check they cashed. Overall, my experience was super-disappointing. ..I guess Dr. Wells is an example of something/one that's been ruined by Yelp. (Or, else, ruined by Dr. Wells. Maybe if she cut down on the number of patients she saw a day and didn't hire nurses/office staff that have no manners whatsoever, things would still be good.) read more

I nearly had a heart attack on my follow up appointment when the nurse said, "So you're pregnant, right?" I almost FUCKING FAINTED. When the doctor came in, I was still freaked out. However, Dr. Wells is very nice. She should just make sure that her nurses don't scare the shit out of her patients with misinformation. Finding a doctor in New York is a scary process. Finding a gynecologist, even more so. I initially went to Dr. Wells based on all the good Yelp recommendations, and I wasn't disappointed. At our first appointment, she sat with me in her office and discussed my family history, and any concerns/questions I had. She made me feel so at ease. The exam was quick and painless, and she made me feel very comfortable. I also loved the little changing room, and the level of privacy I felt. She's really what the others write about her! Sincere, friendly, and very gentle. BUT SHE MISSES OBVIOUS THINGS THAT REQUIRE TREATMENT! That is scary. Regarding facility in general: I had to respond to bossy nurses who expected me to want to use the same room that had a collection ofother people's urine samples - still warm in full repulsive display. Hairs on the exam chair and on the scale too. I nearly vomitted four times and just tried to get through it. As any woman knows, going to a new gynecologist for the first time can be a harrowing, intimidating experience. That's why I am so relieved that I found Dr. Wells on the first try. She's knowledgeable, gentle, non-judgmental, and a bit on the younger side (which is a plus for me, as I found her easier to relate to). I LOVE dr. Wells. I have been seeing her for several years. (Five, I think. Maybe 6.) And she has always been the most helpful, knowledgeable, and caring, in addition to being patient and never condescending when I am paranoid or just plain concerned about something. Her staff has never been anything less than sweet to me. Sometimes the wait is annoying, but very rarely. (And it's usually because she got stuck in the hospital with another patient!) Her online portal is really easy to use and SUPER convenient. Look, nobody enjoys going to the ob-gyn but Dr. Wells makes it considerably less stressful. I sing her praises to all my friends. And even though the office is in the UES and I live in crown heights, she is DEFINITELY worth the trek. read more

I had my first visit with Dr. Wells last February. Contrary to some of the reviews posted here, I found the office receptionists to be cordial and pleasant. I'm not sure if there were any recent changes, but I was quite pleased with the whole process from start to finish. I also made my appointment during the lunch hour, which was the recommended time for someone like me who didn't want to wait for hours to see a doctor. And it was relatively on point! I only waited 15 minutes or so. Now, I was only going in for an annual check up so many of the questions were general, but I thought Dr. Wells was quite thorough in terms of asking about family history and personal health issues. She had a wonderful bedside manner, so I wasn't phased at all throughout the examination. All in all, an efficient but comfortable and friendly environment! Dr. Wells' office even has a web portal so you can view your test results online, rather than call the office or have a follow-up appointment if the results are normal. read more

Just went again for the second time for my yearly exam. The staff was very friendly...I am plus size and the nurse snuck me in a gown to fit me better and did not make a big deal of it. Quick, painless exam. Dr. Wells is a fantastic Dr!!! After reading all these great reviews I decided to try Dr. Wells myself. Hands down the best gyno I think I might have ever been to! She is very sweet, knows what she is talking about, and DOESN'T RUSH YOU! My two favorite things so far about being a patient: 1, Dr. Wells actually asks you all your personal questions herself NOT the nurse (i.e. medical/family history, medications you have taken, surgery's, etc.) 2. I have been seeing Dr. Wells since the first year I moved to NYC. The search was difficult and to be honest, in California, typically your general prac is able to do the yearly well woman exam so finding a gyn was a new experience. I LOVE Dr. Wells. I remember my first visit which included a full on consultation and background. Subsequent visits have been as fantastic. I see her once a year typically, yet she manages to remember the things that are important and bring those up and check in both medically and personally. She does her best to make her patients feel relaxed which is no easy task given the awkwardness of these visits! I saw a review stating she had an action against her license. I actually checked the board of medicine for NY and nothing comes back on her - please check these things for yourself rather than go off a bad review. I have not had a problem with the practice accepting my insurance - I saw her last in June and only paid a small copay with my BCBS insurance. Finally, I have to agree the office staff does have room for improvement. I am not sure I would call them all out rude but they are not always the most personable - which is kind of their job. One small thing to consider is her hours are not the best. They are a bit limited but well worth working around because she is a great doctor. read more

Dr. Wells is awesome. The staff is just ok, IMO... I've stood and waited for the front desk ladies to complete a "he said, she said" conversation before acknowledging me, and one of the staff got huffy when I insisted on actually reading a consent form before signing it, but whatever... I've experienced far worse, and Dr. Wells is worth it. I love that I get to sit in her office with clothes *on* and talk like people before the exam, I love the private changing cubicle in the exam room and the cute knitted socks on the stirrups. Dr. Wells has a great, friendly bedside manner and projects a comforting air of confidence, knowledge, and experience although she appears fairly young. She was able to find the cause of a particular problem I was having, and I was "lucky" enough to have her perform a little minor surgery on me at Mt. Sinai, which went very well and solved everything. (Mt. Sinai was just ok, but Dr. Wells was great.) I could not recommend Dr. Wells more highly... she is fantastic. read more

Dr Wells is awesome! And, so is the staff that works in the front office as well as the nurses that help with drawing blood, taking vitals, etc. Not sure where all the negative reviews come from, but I have nothing but wonderful things to say about this office. My regular doctor I had been seeing for years wouldn't see me and I was long overdue for a well woman and checking on some issues I had. I was able to easily book an appointment to see Dr Wells, no crazy 3 month wait, and she was so lovely during my appointment and follow up. Responsive to questions and answered emails quickly and just so happy to have a doctor again that listens to concerns and is patient and thorough. She was even willing to address some concerns outside of GYN issues, which was so helpful. Highly recommend! During Covid times it can be scary to go into a medical office, and they could not have been safer or more attune to the current situation, while still offering excellent service. In 2014 I became a patient of Dr. Wells for perhaps 3 visits. She then stopped taking Medicare and I found another doctor who took my insurance. I would have rated Dr. Wells then with four stars, not five. One month ago, I discovered a scary spot on the vulvar area. My gyn. could not get me in and other doctors gave me appointments almost 2 months later. I called Dr. Wells office and said I would pay out-of-pocket if she could see me quickly, which she did. The appointment ended up requiring a biopsy, as I expected. Told the results could take up to ten days to come in, I knew that meant business days. The results came in on the ninth day yet Dr. Wells did not call me with the results until three days later on a Friday night at 6:30pm when it was the weekend, too late for me to call my Internist. My result was pre-cancerous and would require an excision. I had been so nervous and called the office each day after being told the results were in. Not once did Dr. Wells contact me. I sent in forms to have my results emailed to my other doctors. It is now day seven and it still has not been done despite my sending in my release forms one week ago. I told the office I would walk in today and pick them up. Told they would be ready for me, I went today. They did not have them ready. My daughter and daughter-in-law have been long standing patients of Dr. Wells. My advice to anyone thinking of becoming a patient is RUN! DO NOT WALK in the other direction. Dr. Wells is both pleasant and perky. More important, she has proven undependable and lacking in empathy (not greeting back with results and not getting reports out) which is unacceptable to me as a patient. You would think that, woman to woman, she would know better and feel empathy for the fears of her patients. read more

I went there as I found her review on yelp. She is very prepared and professional. I never change my gynecologist but since I was out of my country I had to find one. I felt welcomed by the doctor who listened to me and was truly interested. She is friendly and made me feel very comfortable (I usually feel uncomfortable when going to doctors). Dr. Wells is terrific: caring, competent, and efficient. I wish the same could be said for her receptionist. If I had only to interact with Dr. Wells, I'd rate her practice 5 stars, but unfortunately, administrative interactions really do matter. I've put up with this receptionist for several years, but our latest interaction was the final straw. When dealing with sensitive issues of health or billing, it's important to be able to communicate with and get answers from a thinking, feeling, logical person -- you can't get that from talking to a robot. It must be hard to get good office staff, as Dr. Wells has evidently had this problem before (judging from earlier reviews). I'll be looking for a new GYN. read more

Incompetent, unresponsive office staff - I've been seeing Dr. Wells for three years and wasted hours on the phone sorting out mistakes in scheduling, prescriptions, billing. They've charged me for missed appointments I never scheduled. It took 5 phone calls and 6 days to get a response for new prescriptions. She has the RUDEST staff I've ever come across anywhere in New York. What's particularly troubling about it is that Dr. Wells witnesses the behavior, but does nothing. I cannot imagine why anyone would use Valerie Wells when she allows her staff to ignore, snap at, and condescend to patients -- and this includes her clueless nurses. Definitely! Yelp! to find a new doctor to get all up in your lady parts? Indeed! When I needed to find a gynecologist in the city I turned to Yelp and was happily surprised to find a bunch of reviews. Dr. Wells had the most good reviews and she is conveniently located for me so I decided to try her out. I needed an ASAP appointment and was able to get one the next day, first thing in the morning. The front-desk staff was great both on the phone and in person. Dr. Wells was fantastic, very friendly and extremely professional. She takes her time and so you don't feel rushed at all. The exam rooms had changing areas with curtains and hangers, you definitely get the sense that this is a practice that cares about its patients. If you're looking for a great doctor for your "feminine mystique" look no father than Dr. Wells, she's fab. read more

Dr Wells is ok but her staff, is totally incompetent! I called as my insurance had changed and was assured by them that she took my insurances. Upon arrival I presented my insurance cards to the front desk and said are you sure she takes the insurance I have and they said yes. Approximately two weeks following my appointment I got a bill in full for my appointment. And a follow up phone call from the office manager as I had not yet paid ( which to date I've not) . After my telling her how angery I was over the staff whom obviously don't know what their doing, she said either pay or she would turn over the bill to collection agency which she did and the collection agency has added 40 dollars to the bill for late fee. I've never delt with such an incompetent doctors office. read more

Dr. Wells is absolutely the best doctor I have ever had (out of GPs, dentists... all of them. THE BEST.) She's super friendly, instantly makes you feel comfortable, and really listens to all of your concerns. If you have a question before you're scheduled for an exam, you can call her up on the phone, and once her staff gets ahold of her, she'll give you free, honest advice over the phone. This is the kind of doctor you build a long term relationship with. Highly recommended. Unfortunately, she only accepts Aetna and Oxford as of the time of this review. So now that I have insurance via the Freelancer's Union, I need to switch. EPIC SIGH. I'll miss you, Dr. Wells! She listened to everything I said, took her time to answer any and all my questions, and really got to know me. I never felt rushed, or that I was taking too much of her time. Like several of the previous posts mentioned, she has this incredible way of making your appointment super quick but you leave feeling like you had the opportunity to ask as many questions as you would like and feel fully informed. I can't rave about this doctor enough!! I went to her because she had great reviews on here and just wanted to echo my great experience. Dr. Wells is warm, friendly, so easy to talk to and really knows her stuff. Her offices are clean and don't have the sterile doctor's office feel at all.
