I can count on one hand the number of times I have been to Valhalla Pure Outfitters, but every time I have purchased what I have been looking for: snow boots, hiking boots, and a rain jacket. I started a hiking group this summer and I found myself in need of proper hiking pants. This weekend I had some time to go shopping and thinking they must have a good selection because they have a large store, I went to Mountain Equipment Company (MEC). Big mistake. Incompetent staff and pants made for women with no butts. Disgusted, I went to Valhalla Pure, where I should have gone to in the first place. Moments after I walked in Valhalla Pure, an employee asked if I needed help, which I appreciated, as I desperately needed help, and it had taken a long time to find an employee at MEC (who turned out to know nothing about women's hiking pants). I explained to the employee what I was looking for (hiking pants that FIT me), and he was SO HELPFUL. He showed me a couple of different styles and brands, explained their features, and chose sizes that would fit me based on my body shape (he was absolutely spot on about the sizes). The result was that I ended up walking out of there with two pairs of pants. Next time I need something, I am definitely going straight to Valhalla Pure. read more

I have to agree with another reviewer on this store. The customer service sucks. Stood in there for at least 15 minutes and no one even looked at me. When I asked a representative for a size she looked at me like "why are you bothering me." I only gave them 2 stars because they had the item I was looking for. read more

Terrible customer service, an aggressive security guard tried to take my purse from me. I have medical issues and emergency medication I cant have taken from me so I refused. Their policy is any bag larger than 6.5"x8.5" which is ridiculously small. My bag is a cotton backpack 8"x12", it's so small I cant open it without taking it off, and its half full of my wallet, phone, sunscreen, and medications. What could I possibly steal in a camping store that justifies them taking my emergency medical supplies. This is clearly discrimination against my disability, improve security cameras and magnetic sensors if you are worried about theft don't harass disabled people! Their reply on google reviews stated "we have staff throughout the store, so if you ever had a need for your medical gear, it could have been in your hands in mere seconds" are their staff trained in medical first aid? I don't want to have to entrust my wellbeing in someone I don't know, they're not qualified to handle peoples medications and I might not have enough of a warning to explain before needing them. I have emergency medications on me at all times because of my social anxiety and severe allergies, it is illegal to remove medications from someone. The audacity of this place to think they have the ability to take paying customers valuable possessions is outlandish, I read multiple other one star reviews stating the aggressiveness of security at this location so its obviously a problem thats going to continue due to poor management and customer service. read more

I was aggressively looking for Vapor Barrier socks for an expedition in the arctic circle and the only place where I could find them was this place. The shipping delays worried me so I let them know as I placed the order how tight the time frame was. Got an email the next day from their customer service telling me they would do their best to accommodate, long story short, just received the package, with the shipping papers was a handwritten note to tell me to enjoy my trip. As far as commitment and dedication, this place, for me, is IT! To top it all off, they've got some pretty neat stuff that's a bit hard to find in my neck of the woods (Quebec city), so if you're looking for some "obscure" outdoor gear, they might be the place. After sweltering in a few weeks of bullpucky hot weather in Portland the GF and I were looking forward to a vaca in some Vancouver rain and mist. Did we ever get it. Unfortunately my trusty Marmot Precip had given up the ghost, probably from a lack of care. Some frenzied Googling while I dried off lead me here, where I found the exact same make, model and color. While Citibank was chewing on my transaction homeboy behind the counter even squeezed in a quick lesson on preserving my new-but-the-same garment. Awesome. read more

Sadly, I have recently some truly awful customer service at this store. This tale comes with a warning..... My partner purchased a Northface jacket, which was on sale - for $175. It was to protect me from the Vancouver elements - which generally is rain and maybe some more rain. A couple of days later I wore the coat in the first heavy rain (which I believe Gortex is made for) and it soaked through - as it was completely defective. The coat was take back to Old Valhalla Pure, but because it was on sale - I was given the old "sorry, no store credit for you." Instead, they sent it away to be 'tested', as clearly I was lying about it being defective. Honestly, I would have been happy to trade it in for something else. INSTEAD, it was sent away to a freaking Lab - and almost 4 weeks later, it was verified as 'defective' (because it was). Alas, since it was a month later in the Vancouver rainy season, I had purchased another coat. I tried to get the money returned - as most stores who appreciate their customers would offer in this situation. I was stoutly refused a refund. In fact, we had to argue to receive a store credit. The store policy is brutal!! The manager was unbending and terrible to deal with. I urge you to be careful about the products you purchase here - Or you will be screwed by their "policy". Take that coat into the bathroom and dump it in the sink to test the rain-proofedness before you buy. Honestly - do it. I WILL NEVER BUY HERE AGAIN!! Nope. No way. And you should be cautious when you do too. Read the fine print. Or maybe just buy from somewhere with a return policy. Bad Valhalla Pure. Very Bad. read more

I've shopped here for the fleece, the usual brands like North Face and my darling Arcyterx...prices seem to be better as usual, just whether or not you need more, or in the mood to find your size. Not sure what has happened with the Vancouver store but beware if you purchase gear. Wife and son went in to purchase pack for West Coast Trail (I've spent thousands there in last couple years), sold him a $400 pack in large and he is a small (waist). Went back two days later to exchange, first words out of their mouth was if you've worn it we won't take it back. This is after they didn't even bother to fit him, Osprey has a template which the store has but didn't use. Not good. Sternum strap on my Osprey broke, lifetime warranty on Osprey. Wife had my pack, asked them to replace. First thing out of employees mouth was we don't sell or carry those, people ask for them all the time. Next we won't do anything as you bought it online from Valhalla not this store; really? Then pack guy refitting my son goes in back and hands wife a new sternum strap! Wish he would have put it on, took me a while as first time, no doubt he could have done in five minutes or less. Not sure what has happened to this store. Started going there when MEC dropped off and was quite happy, not now. Will certainly check other stores before shopping there again. read more

I have mixed feelings about this review as I had a great experience initially buying a jacket for my wife for Christmas - the gentleman who helped me was amazing and very helpful. However, upon opening the gift on Christmas Day my wife discovered that the jacket was too small, so we would have to return it (and I had suspected this might be the case, so I had asked if this would be a problem upon purchasing it and was assured it would not be a problem). As we live in Squamish, it required a special trip back down to Vancouver to make this exchange, which I did on Dec. 27th as we were going to be spending lots of time outdoors for the holidays and my wife was excited about her new jacket! When I arrived at the store there was a hand written sign on the door that said that no returns or exchanges were allowed until Jan. 2nd. However, there was no mention of this on my receipt or on the company website which I had checked before leaving. As I had driven over an hour to get there, I decided to go in and see if it was not too busy, would they be able to do this for me and save another trip. When I went in, i was not busy at all and at least 3 of the floor staff were chatting with each other, and there was only one person at the till. Even though they obviously had the time to be able to do this, they insisted I would have to come back after Jan. 2nd. As an owner of a retail business myself, I understand how busy post Christmas can be, but I also understand the importance of customer service and I have to say, if those staff worked for me, they would all be looking for new jobs in 2013! I am a huge fan of Valhalla in general (both Squamish and Vancouver), but this experience has left me upset. Whether I spend $50 on gloves or $1,000 on a jacket, customer service is what is supposed to set small retailers apart of the big box competition. I could have chosen to spend my $$ at Sportcheck or one of the other big box stores, but I did not as I wanted to support a small, local store. I have sat on this for a few days as I wanted to get some perspective on this after some sleep, but after a few days of reflection, I have come to the decision to choose to spend my money elsewhere. I will be returning my jacket on the 2nd, as opposed to just exchanging it. This retailer has lost a $600 sale as well as my future business. read more

They know what they're talking about and they will bend over backwards to help you find something you're looking for, even if they don't carry the item(s). The true mark of any store is not how they deal with you while you are spending money but how they treat you when you have a problem with a product you purchased. This store is great! We recently purchased a Big Agnes Fly Creek UL 3. A pretty high end tent. It's well know that for the top end gear Valhalla is the place to go. For starters the store had no problem price matching a lower advertised price, The staff were very knowledgeable and provided great advice about the tent. Sadly during our 1st night it rained through the night. After about 2 hours the beading on the rain fly stopped and the rain began to drip and eventually stream through. We had to use our Gore-tex jackets as makeshift covers to get through the night. Clearly this was not the fault of Valhalla. After explaining our situation to the team at VPO they took on the onus of dealing with the manufacturer and offered us a new tent or an exchange for another tent recommended by their team. Soured on the Big Agnes tent we chose the latter. It doesn't end there: Not only are they going to return the tent to the manufacturer, they committed to follow up and let us know what the results with the tests are. Wow! Knowing that they will price match and that the staff have actual expert knowledge (unlike some giant stores close by...) We are now converted to Valhalla and will recommend it to everyone read more

Valhalla Pure Outfitters is a great place to shop. Some products are expensive, but they have competitive prices and you can find gears for all prices too. What really makes Valhalla a great place to shop is the customer service. They make you feel no pressure to buy whatsoever, and that my friend is priceless. Lots of people shop there and have many questions (a little too many sometimes!), but the personnel know what they are talking about and are extremely friendly. I would recommend this place from anyone that is new to the outdoor to the outdoor addict. read more

I like the selection at Valhalla, especially as MEC gets more lifestyle'y, but I just tried to return a water filter, bought at the Squamish branch 2 days previous (unopened, with receipt, correct card etc) and the manager would only offer me store credit! Because as he told me, he didn't want me going and spending the money at MEC instead!! Er, yes- but that's MY FRIGGIN MONEY! Sadly, his ignorant attitude will have the opposite effect because I will go out of my way to try and buy whatever I need at MEC in future and failing that, any other store but this one. read more

nice people and stuff but bought 5 items from online store. they shipped from three locations in two provinces. they needed to be returned due to sizing but they require me to send them back to the three different locations that shipped rather than just to their main store/warehouse! so rather than exchange i'll get a refund and shop elsewhere like Eddie Bauer or MEC or Sportchek and not have to worry about the hassle and expense... read more

I'd gone to MEC and Sport Check and pretty much all the other outdoor shops that are still operational along the street. It was hard to get any kind of service and when I did, the answers were pretty conservative. I was ready to call it a day and then I saw Valhalla. I was browsing the hiking shoes section, a bit intimidating and overwhelming since I never really shopped for a pair before and didn't really know what features and design I should go for. Not too long after, one of the employees was answering some of my general questions, was very friendly and quite knowledgeable on his first day on the job. When it came to the specs and benefits, he endorsed me to a specialist who knew more about it. Immediately, Natalie came over. She listened attentively, answered all my questions and narrowed down my choices to 3 brands. She had me try them all on, try it out on the incline and asked me to walk around the shop in them. I took my time and walked slowly knowing that she'll run off to another customer and I'll have to to call her attention again when I'm done. As I looked back from where I left her, she was still sitting there, patiently waiting. When I came back, she knew what questions to ask and gave me even more insight from the feedback I had given her. She did not try to upsell anything but made sure that I find the one that would best fit my feet. I walked out wearing my new pair of Merrell Moabs, thanks to the personal service, undivided attention and genuine concern they have for their customers. Well done guys!
