I've been a patient of Dr. Akin at Valley Chiropractic Care for about 9 years now, and I truly can't recommend him enough. About 10 years ago, I developed severe elbow tendinitis in my left arm--so bad that I couldn't even pick things up without pain. I tried everything: my family doctor prescribed anti-inflammatories and rest, which I followed for nearly six months. But as soon as I tried to lift anything again, the pain came right back. Next, I saw a sports medicine specialist who referred me to physical therapy. After weeks of treatment, I still had no relief. Out of options and frustrated, I started researching online and came across Active Release Therapy (ART). Dr. Akin was listed as a certified provider, so I figured I had nothing to lose. From my very first visit, Dr. Akin was attentive and thorough. He listened carefully, gave me a full assessment, and told me he believed he could resolve my issue in 6-8 visits. I'll be honest--I was skeptical. After a year of failed treatments, it was hard to believe this could be fixed that quickly. But sure enough, after just 6 sessions, the pain in my elbow was gone. I was able to return to working out and even started competing in Spartan Races. Since then, I've continued to see Dr. Akin--not for injury, but for regular "tune-ups." Not to sound dramatic, but Dr. Chris Akin gave me my life back. I was diagnosed with arthritis just before my 40th birthday. Nearly all of my joints were in pain, and I was walking with a cane. My rheumatologist recommended cortisone injections and possible hip replacement, but I was not ready to go down that path. My husband suggested I see Dr. Akin, and it changed my life. Dr. Akin also suggested I do an inflammatory blood test and cut out trigger foods. Initially, I was seeing Dr. Akin weekly, but decreased visits as my health improved. I now see him every 6-8 weeks. But I did not have much improvement after scheduled visits and I am going to look for someone else to see. I've received half a dozen treatments from Chris Akin that used the active release technique. It reminds me of deep muscle acupressure, focusing on releasing muscles and muscle groups that are not moving freely. As a result, the spine and nerves are less stressed. This makes sense as pure adjustments to the spine (which Chris can do as well) may treat the symptom, but not the underlying root cause(s). I was suffering from moderate pain in my shoulders and upper arms. After one treatment I felt much better though there was some initial soreness for one night from the treatment. That went away after a day and did not reoccur with the second treatment. I tapered off until it seemed I had maximum relief for the effort. Further treatment, in my case, may have been a case of diminishing returns. I achieved much greater freedom of motion, had far fewer issues with waking myself up at night (and thus improved overall sleep), and felt less sore during the day. Chris has a very congenial approach with his patients that makes you feel comfortable with his process. He explains what he's doing and ensures he is not working muscle groups beyond your tolerance. It can be a little sensitive at times, but immediately feels like he's getting to the really tight areas. I highly recommend Chris' services and treatments. If like me, you'll see quick results from the sessions and won't receive any pressure to continue past the point where you feel you've gotten the most for your efforts. One of my close friends suggested I go see Dr. Chris for some serious back pain. The tool that separated Chris from other chiropractors was his background in A.R.T, the gold standard in manual therapy. While most people assume getting your spine or neck "adjusted" relieves all the pain, it's not, and it's not getting at the source of the issue, the relationship between the musculoskeletal system and the nervous system. By attacking the muscles that are being over worked and chronically tighten, Chris helps restore pain-free motion into the muscle, and subsequently, the whole body. Most chiropractors would make their necessary adjustments and send you on your way, but Chris doesn't stop there. He goes a step further by explaining in an understandable manner the potential causes for your discomfort in the first place. Along with necessary training guidance and/or lifestyle adjustments that need to be made, or added, to help eliminate this problem in the future. Our entire experience with Dr. Chris Akin was outstanding. He has excellent patient care and bedside manner and is committed to spending ample time with his patients in order for them to receive the best care. My son is an active swimmer and water polo player and last fall he developed some alarming and strange issues involving chest pain and breathing difficulty. It ended up debilitating him, he was unable to exercise at all. After numerous tests and doctors appointments with specialists we were feeling discouraged and very concerned about his health. I have been treated very successfully by Dr. Chris Akin. I was having extreme shoulder pain and loss of mobility. I am happy to say that I am almost completely back to normal. I found that he was attentive and friendly. Through the process I was given exercises and warm ups to do to keep advancing my movement. I was referred to Dr. Akin for treatment of debilitating TMJ pain. Not only did his treatments significantly help my extreme pain in my jaw, he has also helped with my tension headaches, migraines, and back issues. I have always avoided chiropractors as I didn't want my body cracked and popped, which makes Dr. Akin's technique so different from any other chiropractor.
