I've been coming to this nursery for our garden and front yard plants since July 2020. We got two beautiful Butterflies Japanese Maples from here, Wisteria, lots of Chrysanthemums, Lavenders, succulents, roses, hanging flowers, trimmed pine trees, etc. However, yesterday ( Sunday 6/28) was the first time we met Ms. Laurence. She was so helpful: enthusiastically assisting my husband and I to search information of flowers we needed to know and brought them out for us. With her nice and big smile along with her wonderful customer service, this trip to Valley Hill Nursery was surely the best experience we've ever had at this place. Honestly, this nursery used to be one of the best out here in Monterrey County, but within the last several months I have gone, it keeps getting worse. Customer service is severely poor. I went in today, and absolutely no one acknowledged me, even thought their were two young ladies inside the indoor building, where they have the indoor houseplants. Specifically, the tall gal with a tatted arm, was straight up cold and gave off a weird vibe. Makes me feel so uncomfortable even shopping here. Additionally, the nursery itself is so poorly managed. Some of the poor plants are fried and still on the sales floor, or just disorganized with a complete mess. Won't be returning here anytime soon unfortunately. read more

Worked with Valley Hills Nursery to provide a wooden barrier and landscape screen. The worked progressed without a fixed estimate. Cost overruns were substantial in the thousand's of dollars with little or no explanation. Quality of work was poor. Adjacent landscaping and decking were damaged in the process with no remediation . Nursery owner was abusive and argumentative in conversations. I would not recommend this business to anyone for landscape work. read more

Valley Hills Nursery would not accept a plant returned after 16 days even though their staff specifically recommended care that led to the plant's severe defoliation. Thus I cannot recommend shopping at this nursery. Read on for further details: I bought a 15 gallon Ceanothus along with some liquid fertilizer that a staff person recommended I use to sustain the bloom. A week after the plant was delivered ($50 fee) I applied a gallon of the fertilizer at half the recommended dose. One week later I noticed all the leaves were turning a sickly yellow and beginning to fall off. When I googled "Ceanothus" I read that "The roots form a beneficial relationship with the nematodes naturally present in the soil which allows the plants to fix their own nitrogen. The result is a shrub that doesn't require traditional fertilization -- and regular fertilizer can actually kill the plant. " When I called the nursery about the problem they suggested I bring the plant back to "take a look at it". When I did, the owner of the nursery insisted on adhering to his "3-day return policy" because a longer time might mean I "possibly killed it with a pesticide or bug spray". Other staff members thought I could have overwatered it, which I was very careful not to do. In my view they tried to blame me for their misinformation that led to ruining my expensive plant. They wouldn't even take my suggestion of giving me store credit. Offering to let me buy another one at 50% off is not satisfactory. read more

Coming here reminded me of why I love my home state of California! The flowers and greenery are lovely and abundant, with a huge selection of citrus trees. I recently bought six bags of soil conditioner, only to find that my gardener had already done so. I returned 4 bags 6 days later, only to find that they were sticking to a very restrictive 3 day return policy, not even allowing me to get a credit for future purchases. To add insult to injury, the sales ladies were borderline rude. I hate to do it, but its back to Home Depot for garden and plant supplies when local businesses can't keep up. read more

Been purchasing shrubs and plants here for years. They have a huge selection of trees, shrubs, flowers and other plants. It's easy to find things because of the way everything is laid out so neatly. Slightly cheaper than Griggs, and much cheaper than the small nurseries in Monterey and Pacific Grove. The only comparable prices would be Home Depot, but their selection is weak and heaven help you if you have a question, the workers in the Home Depot Garden section are clueless. read more

I have been going to this nursery for years and I absolutely love it! I find the prettiest things there and the staff are so friendly helpful when it comes to questions on anything, recommendations, or helping you load things into your car. The prices are also really good for the quality of plants and gardening supplies they have there. I've been directing my family and friends here for their outdoor needs and they also love it. Average product poor service, zero follow through. I spoke with Rick personally two weeks ago about my gopher that is eating some of my new plants. He told me his crew would come and deal with the issue. Nobody came. I waited a week and didn't hear anything. Last week I sent Rick an email asking them to help me. Still no response. I like to think that I have a green thumb, but it is probably my heavy hand on the Miracle Grow sprayer that makes my garden grow so well! Those first few blossoms of spring, and the pale color dusting the hills signal the change that leads to the a more colorful world. I had embellished my front porch with plants and blooms from this little nursery before, and been impressed by their heartiness. The staff was very helpful, and I felt the plants were acclimatized to their location. I made a big commitment here recently, and couldn't be more satisfied! For years I had eyed the beautiful pink magnolias that sprout lovely mauve tulip shaped flowers early in spring. I love those early signs of color, and watch for them everywhere. I call them "tulip trees" and had long wanted one. Driving down the Carmel Valley Road, I spied a few lined up at Valley Hills. We went in and photographed them, so I could really mull it over. $330.00 was a fair price, I had been shopping around and they are not available everywhere. These were thriving in wooden crates, and were semi-full grown, about 8-10 feet tall. Keeping my eye on them for a couple of months, I finally finagled my husband into helping me transport one to San Luis Obispo, where I immediately planted it. We arranged drip irrigation, since the drought has not encouraged plants, and I waited through a dry winter until this year when the tree burst into life late in January with a flurry of beautiful soft pinky mauve blooms, making one of my gardening dreams come true!!! read more

It was a 20 minute drive from the gym and my husband and drove to get there before they close. The place was lovely and peaceful. Plants and flowers everywhere! I basically got 4 plants which were all located indoors in their mini receiving area. The lady at the cashier was nice to help out. I got a Zz plant, a pink wandering jew and 2 vintage violets. Will definitely come back and get more. So happy to see they have a monstera plant too. read more

Last May I purchased and planted three plants that never did anything in my garden. I even talked to a staff about what to do, getting advice that they needed to be in the ground through the fall. These plants never grew or bloomed. Today, I tried to return then, in their original pots with a receipt. They wouldn't even take them back or give me a credit. They weren't dead. These guys are amazing! I love how they are sweet whenever I come in. People don't understand that these guys are humans too, they're not robots they have emotions too so just be nice to them and they'll be nice to you back. I went in to see if the had variegated string of hearts but didn't find any (which is understandable, it's winter and its been a cold season), so I looked around for another in my list. As I'm doing that I go up to ask the girl at the counter to see when they would get them in and she was so sweet and kind! I can't remember her name but she was so sweet. I find the one I'm lookin for and I pay and as I'm walking out, I find another one of my favorites and start looking at it but put it done because I've already spent way to much during all my plants shopping . And the girl at the counter goes around to the front and brings me a cutting of the plant that I was just talking about!!! I was over the moon!! I'm so excited to bring it home!! read more

Nice selection, service questionable. On my last two visits I received advice that turned out to be totally wrong (which I discovered the hard way, then researched on the internet, and at another nursery, at which the staff laughed at the advice I received at Valley Hills). The staff overall is friendly and helpful, but not well educated about plants, and usually refer me to the manager (owner?). It's this gentleman who has given me incorrect advice, I think because he was looking to sell me some more snake oil. I'd look elsewhere unless you just like to shop and don't have any specific questions or problems. Griggs up the street has a comparable selection, and their staff bends over backwards for you, even if you're only purchasing one small plant. I heart Griggs! read more

This nursery sells inferior plants. And, the staff from the owner to the counter help could really use lessons on customer service. We special ordered a tree ($450 plus delivery charges), that has never done well. I was wondering whether the supplier might have a replacement policy if we were sold a diseased tree. I was told: "There's no way that we are going to take the tree back." or offer any help. They offered no answer as to the disease I described (just a general "it could be anything"). I don't think that they know anything about plants and the staff is less than helpful. We went to Grigg's (down the road) and got immediate help. And, no, I did not berate the other nursery to get it. Grigg's is just far more knowledgeable and much more helpful and informative. I will never buy anything from Valley Hills again; and, we have purchased a lot from them in the past.I have instructed my landscaper to do the same. Go to Grigg's. read more

Yes, best selection in CV and really nice sales staff on the grounds. Just watch out for the register staff so they don't OVERCHARGE you. I was charged a couple of dollars more on each of several clearly labelled items. Plus, hybrid teas that I bought at full-price the day before rang up a few dollars more expensive than their price tag the next day. If you keep watch then I think you'll come away happy with good items. But honestly, I shouldn't have to keep watch! read more

Very negative experience with an owner who does not listen to the customer, but rather tells them why a plant has gone bad, and what they did to cause it to happen. I simply wanted a credit for the plants to put toward another purchase. But "NO." Instead he told me why the begonias had molded and dropped their flowers in only two weeks time, saying the mold was from top watering, I explained that I have other begonias and know how to water them (never top-watered). Claimed that dried and dropping flowers were the result of too little water (Huh?). Watered them every three days as needed. The plants began to go bad from the get-go, and in ten days time were in full demise. Owner wanted to sell me fungicide so I could bring them back from their demise. No thanks...another project nursing a plant with a disease. I left the plants so he could revive them, and as a reminder that I won't be coming back. Doubt that he minds, knowing that he can muster a successful business in spite of turning away unhappy customers by simply pointing at his forty-eight hour return policy, posted some 8 feet above his doorway. Guess I should have asked before making a purchase. I'll be sure to share my story with my neighbors and friends, so they don't make the same mistake. read more
