Southern Oregon Orthopedics - 24 Hours Post surgery!

He did an outstanding job surgically but the medication aftercare was atrocious. It was the most painful recovery. Be prepared with your primary to get pain meds after surgery here. Otherwise I would recommend this place.

I have to add another 1 star review for this terrible organization. Our chiropractor referred my…read morehusband here for consultation for the pain in his left knee. He was seen by a PA, Sofia, who had my husband take a blood test and referred him to Josh, a physical therapist, for a consultation in which he recommended six weeks of physical therapy twice a week. My husband saw Sofia the following Monday. She had him take more x-rays & gave him a big Cortizone shot in his knee, which worked wonderfully. On Tuesday, he had his first PT session with Josh. Later in the evening and into the night he started feeling a LOT more pain and his knee swelled. By Wednesday morning he could hardly get out of bed and was experiencing severe pain that was 10 on a 10 scale. He could not walk without canes or crutches, moaning at every step. He could not move his leg very much at all without excruciating pain. He called Southern Oregon Orthopedics to see if someone could help him because his left leg was hurting all the time from his knee all the way down to his ankle but no one was available. He could NOT get through to a human being. Someone finally called him back and suggested he go to their urgent care, which he did. Our good friend is an RN and he took my husband to the urgent care at Southern Oregon Orthopedics. Our friend strongly recommended that my husband request a sonagram to rule out a blood clot. My husband requested this of the person at the front desk who sent that request on. In a little while a medical assistant came out and said she had conferred with her boss, ANOTHER medical assistant, and they did not "think" he had a blood clot and that he should go home, elevate his knee, and put ice on it. (He had been doing that non-stop since his pain began.) NOTE: it is against the law for medical assistants to diagnose and prescribe. Again he asked for a sonogram. She said that they didn't think he needed one but if he insisted, she would write an order for him to go to Asante and get one. After he left Southern Oregon Orthopedic, he decided to go to Provident Urgent Care where they gave him an order and sent him immediately to Provident Hospital. At Provident Hospital, they checked him in immediately and after about 10 minutes the sonogram technician gave him a sonogram. Before he left the hospital, the Provident sonogram technician sent the findings to the doctor at Provident Urgent Care. The medical doctor at Provident Urgent Care thought it was very important that my husband get a sonogram to rule out a blood clot, which matched what my husband wanted and what our RN friend recommended. (The only ones who disagreed were the two medical assistants at Southern Oregon Orthopedics who were NOT legally qualified to have opinions.) My husband canceled all of his PT appointments at Southern Oregon Orthopedics. At Provident, the doctor gave him a referral to the Sports Medicine medical doctor at Provident Hospital, which is where my husband has decided he will be going for future treatment. My husband said he will never go back to Southern Oregon Orthopedics. He said they are very disorganized, that they don't seem to care about their patients, and that they don't have the right level of people dealing with emergency situations. He said he got a very different level of care in an expedient manner from medical doctors at Provident. And furthermore, if they bill Medicare for what they didn't do yesterday, I will file a charge of Medicare fraud. I understand these people advertise a lot. Perhaps if they took good care of their patients, they would get referrals and wouldn't have to spend so much money on advertising; then they could focus on providing even better care.

Oh my God,,, you are not going to believe this group. From the moment that you walk in the door,…read moreyou are treated like a friend, not a customer. The staff is beyond nice and so professional that you immediately feel that you have nothing to worry about.... and then, you get to meet the nicest doctor on the Planet... Dr. James Van Horn. A warm smile and a hug. Your worries melt away. My right hip was replaced by Dr. Van Horn at the Grants Pass Surgery center. They too require a huge shout out for courtesy and professionalism. I walked in the door at 5:45 AM and by 7:30 I was in surgery. By 9:30 AM, I was awake and eating a sandwich... I took a pain pill, got up and walked through the center, went to the restroom and back to recovery. I had a little more to eat and was then released by 11:30 AM. The pain was all but Non-Existent. I made it home and was walking in my Neighborhood by 1:00 PM! My neighbors asked me when I had surgery. When I said 5 hours ago... they were amazed. I had to use a walker for 3 days and a cane for a couple of weeks, not so much for pain but for safety. By the Sunday following the surgery (just 3 days later), I stopped taking the pain medication and had no real pain at all. I do recommend that you do follow the Pre-Op and the Post-Op Physical Therapy very carefully!!! Keep your leg elevated and iced for two weeks when you are not walking. Also, on your own, exercise a heavily several weeks in advance... it is well worth your time and you can make it fun... remember that, you are getting a "New lease on life",,, Don't waste it! Thank you Dr. Van Horne for removing 100% of my hip pain and letting my have my life back! I haven't been this happy in several years. Glenn Woodbury Eagle Point, Oregon

April - Physical Therapy 1, 6, 8, 13, 15, 20, 22,27, and 29 (last day) April. My symptoms since Hip Surgery 9 Apr. 2007. (1) I have experienced fatigue ever since first surgery. (2) Had sensations down my leg off and on day and night of like a hot electrical shock, with tingling. (3) Up on standing I was unable to start walking for a few moments. I would try to, but my leg wouldn't work. (4) I had as much pain in my hip as I had before my first surgery and I still limped as bad on it as I did before, in spite of how hard I tried not to. (5) I have been unable to do a lot of the things I normally did all the time, before my first surgery, like mowing the lawns, doing a little work on my pickup, and things with my horses, which was my hobby. Also I couldn't do home improvement projects like I had in the past. (6) Problems standing up and setting down. (Always) (7) Hard getting in and out of car. (Always) (8) Right leg was asleep and numb almost constantly after surgery. Even woke me up at night. Right leg gets numb setting in car. Sometimes there is a pain similar to frost bite or lack of circulation and the numbness can causes problems when driving . (Always when over half an hour) (9) Sore muscles all the time in lower back, hips, and legs. (10) Can't take a step for a couple moments after standing up. Muscles are stiff and must loosen up before stepping away. (Always) (11) Hurts to walk. (12) Can't bend over to pick something up off from floor. Back, legs and hips hurt when trying to do so. (13) Back is always sore. (14) Can't put sock on right foot or tie shoe without help. (15) Legs swell, gets burning sensation and sometimes itch real bad. Sometimes I draw blood from scratching. (16) Bursitis in left hip. (17) I've noticed that my right foot sometimes turns in when I'm walking. Maybe due to tightening of leg muscles. (18) Lots of headaches. (19) Laying on my left side will cause my hip to ache. (20) One of the most challenging aspects of of the entire experience has been trying to stay in a good frame of mind. I have never liked to see people set around and feel sorry for themselves, so I have dealt with it on a day to day basis. It is now 2/4/2026 "Note, after all these years I still suffer leg pains and skin problems" In total I have had 3 hip replacements, 2 on my right side and 1 on my left.

A hospital gown was waiting and a nurse brought in a heated blanket and socks! Loved that. The nurses were very sweet and helpful and answered all my questions, they told me they make great Melalo's coffee, if I would like some when I woke up. Something to look forward to! They really put me at ease. One nurse put in an IV which was painless and perfect first try, I was impressed. Another one asked me some medical history questions and Dr. Nelson came in shortly to discuss the procedure with me, answered all my questions, took his time. I felt I had a good understanding of what would happen, and I liked everyone there, I felt I was in capable hands. With almost no wait time, I was wheeled into the procedure room and the sedation was explained, I was hooked up to monitors. The Propofol IV was started and I was out in seconds, that is great stuff. You go to sleep fast and wake up fast, as soon as the drip is stopped. Wonderful! Next thing I know, I'm waking up back in the room where I started and it's over! I'm drinking excellent coffee and waking up in a warm bed. The doctor came in and told me what he had found and I got copies of photos of my internals. See you in five years, hopefully no more polyps. The hospital staff had already told my husband the procedure was done and to wait for me at the door. I finished my coffee and was able to dress myself, and walk to the elevator and go home! I felt great, very relieved, and happy and absolutely no abdominal discomfort! I felt perfectly fine. I know nobody wants a colonscopy but I had the best experience, it could not have gone any better and I am so appreciative of everyone at Asante. If you are reading this, get your colonoscopy, there's nothing to fear! It's so important and they do a great job of it at Asante! I promise they will take great care of you! You will leave feeling good and knowing you did yourself a big favor today! We are lucky to live in a time of great medical diagnostics and I feel lucky to have Asante here for my care.
