St. Mary's Cemetery is associated with St. Mary's-Stony Hill Roman Catholic Church in Plainfield,…read moreNJ. The cemetery has been around for over a century. There are still indelible tombstones with dates back to the 1860s with names and dates very clear. Back in the 1800s there were a few epidemics that killed entire families and you can see how they all rest together. Even though it is close to Rt. 78, the grounds are very quiet and serene. There are woods on three sides. Trees and bushes have been planted throughout. The Church has bought all of the land on the one side of it and future plans call for expansion. There are two mausoleums that are fairly new, the most recent I think was completed in 2002. All of the grave sites and crypts are paid for in perpetuity, meaning that the money will be used for forever taking care and maintenance of the grounds and graves. The grounds are well kept and the times I have been there if there is someone cutting the grass or doing maintenance while you visit, they will stop what they are doing out of respect. That is really, really nice. You need to be a parishioner of St. Mary's or know someone/have a relative to "get in" here. Location can be tricky: Exit 41 off of 78 East. Make the right onto Drift Rd. off of the exit. At the light, make the left onto Plainfield Rd. then the cemetery entrance will quickly be on your left. It is an unassuming entrance.
