It took them 5 days to call me back, and the first question was what insurance I have (I have full coverage so I advanced to question 2). The second was whether I have ever been in a pain management program (code words- "are you a drug seeker?"). I do not take any pain meds, so on to #3. This one floored me: "Do you have fibromyalgia?" to which I said, yes, I had been diagnosed with it many years ago. The scheduler instantly read from her script: "Unfortunately you are not in our scope of practice and we can't see you." Wait, what? I told her I wasn't seeking care for fibromyalgia, and would see a rheumatologist if ever I needed medical management for FMS, I was seeking a primary care provider, but her discriminatory script had no other response than to say I was not in their scope of practice and they wouldn't see me. That's like saying my cardiac condition isn't in their scope of practice and they won't see me. It makes no sense- if a doctor feels a conditon is outside their scope of practice, they refer a patient to a specialist for that condition. It's standard practice, so something is fishy here. Apparently, SIM has decided a patient with fibromyalgia syndrome (or chronic pain- the question I passed) fits some hidden profile and they are using these questions to discriminate. I wonder what the next questions would have been. In addition, the SIM doctors are sadly outdated in making their value judgements about patients with fibromyalgia or chronic pain conditions, which speaks volumes about how antiquated SIM medical care is. These providers would do well to consult the Arthritis Foundation, the National Institutes of Health, or the Centers for Disease Control, maybe even go to a conference to update their knowledge base. There is a wealth of information and research about fibromyalgia syndrome and the neuropathology of chronic pain disorders. Perhaps if they knew more, they would feel comfortable accepting patients with these conditions into their practice. I'm afraid, though, that the real issues aren't the disorders, but the use of the diagnoses to discriminate. Shameful. Avoid this place if you want a doctor who cares.

I am honestly shocked at the care I received today while handling the news I had a miscarriage (my…read morefirst). I was in the ultrasound room and given absolutely nothing other than "here's your uterus" and I know stenographers can't diagnose or maybe even share news with you but I found in my report later that I had a small hemorrhage in my uterus that was never even discussed today. I already had my suspicions that something was off and it felt awful...Then I was whisked into a patient room where "a doctor will discuss things with you further" so I'm thinking it could be bad news but still have my hopes up that maybe I'm just not as far along as I thought. Then a nurse comes in with such a sad face that I lose all hope and she asks "how you doing?" With a sad look and I start to tear up and I say I just don't know whats going on and she said "oh well yeah the Dr is gonna be in shortly ok??" So I'm texting my husband asking him to come in because at this point I'm shaking. Finally the Dr. Hilton comes in and asks so you haven't had any bleeding? And I just know I had a miscarriage and it was the worst sinking suspicion ever that was still not confirmed. Finally I ask what is happening and he says oh, so basically you've had a miscarriage that just hasn't happened yet" and so obviously I start to cry. He says "miscarriages are just all too common" never once did he say I'm sorry or explain things further without me asking questions and now after reading my chart notes on MyChart I'm even more miffed that my minor hemorrhage wasn't addressed and when I asked how big the fetus was the answer was its hard to know and right in the chart it says it measured at 6 weeks. I know this is something stenographers, nurses, and OBs see probably on a daily basis but I just felt so strange walking out of there. if I hadn't had my husband with me I would've been offered absolutely no comfort whatsoever in this weird isolated sterile environment. I had my daughter in 2024 and loved everything about my experience with Dr Mora when she was there but today was so heart wrenching for me and it was just treated like a hush hush weird minor inconvenience.

The on-call nurse was almost always rude and difficult to talk to, and I'd have to call two or three times just to get her to call in a RX. Dr. Jason Reuter was fantastic. He's friendly and supportive and was willing to answer all of my questions, and took the time to put some thought into his answers. Amery Baker was great too. She took the time to really explain things to me, and seems really smart, capable, and professional. Dr. Kathy Mathia was snippy and condescending and failed to diagnose me with hyperemesis. When I said that I was feeling ill all day long and throwing up everything, even water, she told me that it was normal. When I said, "no, I'm really sick," she smirked at me condescendingly and told me, "that's really normal." Just a few days later I had to go to the emergency room because I was so dehydrated. Later, when I asked her about the safety of a drug they prescribed me (I did some research and couldn't find any studies demonstrating the safety of the class C drug she wanted me to take), she was totally snippy and told me not to worry about it and to just do what the doctor (that being her) told me to do. I just read an article, by the way, saying that the FDA is concerned about the safety of that drug in pregnant women. nice. She also recommended I use those motion sickness wrist bands, which have been shown ineffective in several studies. The thing about Spokane OBGYN is that you can request any of the Drs you want for appointments, but when it comes time to deliver the baby you get whoever is on-call that night. The Dr. who delivered my baby was ok, but he was literally falling asleep during the delivery (eyes closing, head bobbing down). Luckily I had a good delivery nurse who did just about everything, and the baby and I were just fine!
