    Community Door Brampton

Among the most interesting non-profit sites I've visited in Brampton…read more Community Door Brampton is certainly an interesting place, which presented an experience I hadn't expected. It may not look like it at first glance, but this building hosts at least ten offices for various non-profit groups that operate out of Peel, including Volunteer MBC (Mississauga/Brampton/Caledon), the Peel HIV/AIDS Network, the Multiple Sclerosis Society of Canada, a United Way Greater Toronto branch office and other agencies. They're also spread out through the building, so you have to walk to the back to access some of them. I say that the visit was a unique experience because, whether due to my existing volunteer/community work or my role as a writer and editor, a number of people in there knew me by a first-name basis, despite the fact that I'd never visited the site before and didn't know half the people who greeted me. The level of service presented to me on that day was very unusual to me. On this day, I was visiting a reception that was jointly held with a number of agencies. Though small, they had quite the impressive spread of food and a number of silent auction items that had been donated by agencies and businesses throughout the GTA and beyond. I wound up sticking around for the presentations, which were given to recognize outstanding volunteers who had made a difference in the lives of the less-fortunate throughout the region. I also enjoyed some stimulating conversation with a good friend of mine, who asked me whether my prominence in the community was due to my job or my personal brand as a community advocate. Definite food for thought. Community Door is certainly worth a look, as it offers a number of services including employment help and resource connections. (Fun fact: If you visit the Volunteer MBC office, keep a look out for the Charter of Volunteerism and look in the lower-left corner - my signature is there!) Well-recommended and a great community destination.

Second Harvest is a fantastic charity that has been helping hungry people in Toronto since 1985…read more Second Harvest picks up surplus fresh food from food donors such as grocery stores, restaurants, caterers, manufacturers, and events and delivers it to social services agencies, such as shelters, food banks, and breakfast programs. Second Harvest depends on volunteers to help with deliveries, sorting food, and running events. If you would like to volunteer, you can sign up on the website: http://www.secondharvest.ca/volunteer/index.php. I volunteered at Second Harvest for the first time this week in both helping with deliveries and sorting food in the warehouse. Working on the truck was great because you can see firsthand the people who are benefiting from the service. It feels good to do something tangible to help people in need. The warehouse is a much more solitary activity, but there is a lot of work to be done to portion donated food, so it was great to lend a hand. The annual Turkey Drive is coming on Dec 6-7 and Dec 13-14, 2008. You can volunteer or help by buying a frozen turkey at participating Loblaws locations where volunteers will collect and deliver them to people in need.

It's a loft-like space with lots of natural light and really well decorated. One thing that set it apart immediately, is it doesn't have that thrift store smell. They're true to their word that they're only selecting good quality items. Sure, some of the items are perhaps a bit plain, but you don't have to take too long to find a few things you'll like. It's certainly not the case of searching for a diamond in the rough. I imagine woman will like the place even more since about 80% of the floor space is for them. There were several shoppers there and they seemed to have no issue picking out great stuff too. Also, prices are GREAT! Anyone who's 'vintage' shopped in places like Kensington Market will know that things can still have relatively higher prices. My items were incredibly inexpensive, including a Banana Republic shirt which showed virtually no signs of wear for $10. I found out at the counter that this is actually a franchise as part of a fairly large chain (which I hadn't previously heard of). Regardless, they're a very unique and welcome edition to the city.
