No dressing rooms, no allowance on returning items that don't fit, and will not give you a credit! How is that for a negative shopping experience. They should be reminded on a regular basis everything is donated to them. I shop fairly regularly at this Value Village. The staff are helpful and courteous and the products are well placed and organized; lots of signage to direct you to what you may need. So many judges out there, searching for every reason to be dissatisfied with anything, and anyone now days. Instead of complaining, we should all make an effort to look for the good in this very broken world that we live in. We in North America are beyond spoiled rotten and have NO idea what it is to live without food and clean water, clean air to breathe, to live without the basic necessities of life. So, the next time we want to complain, maybe we should all take inventory of our own short comings for we ALL have them, nobody is perfect in any way, shape or form. Bought 2 pillows for $7.00 each at Value Village. Went to Dollarama and noticed they had the identical pillows when I checked the price they were $3.50 each brand new. They were also selling a child's toy for $12.00 which we purchased two years ago at this same location for $3.00 .They call themselves Value Village there's absolutely very little value at this store! Before coming to this branch of Value Village, my only experience with the chain had been in the US, so my perspectives may be a little skewed towards my experiences at those stores - after all, the many US VV's I've been to are my only comparison point. This Value Village is definitely by far the largest I've come across so far.. and falls about in the middle of the range when it comes to organization/cleanliness/fellow clientele/staff.. Whereas in the US one often has to deal with the local transient population, the shoppers here mostly seem lower middle class and especially a lot from the immigrant population. The prices here are about double of what the Value Village prices are in the US, which I found very disappointing..but Canada is an expensive country and one would expect a price increase, albeit not as much of a hike as this Value Village provides. Their used electronics and furniture sections also leave much to be desired, especially considering the size of the store As for the rest, I can only comment on the sections of the store I frequent, so here it goes; 1. Menswear: shirts/tops have a good selection, jeans not so much (the jeans are mostly ugly and 80s fashion). 2. Men's shoes: Well I wear size 13/14 shoes, and while every US Value Village has a rack for these sizes, this one does not..so plum out of luck there. 3. Collectibles and books sections are relatively large and well stocked. That about sums it up for now. so while I definitely recommend this store to people looking for unique costume items or t-shirts on a budget, one must just be careful to not be lulled into thinking that just because it's at Value Village that you're getting the best price.. Be savvy and realize that just like any other store, you still have to shop around and determine whether or not an item is really worth the money on the price tag. read more

I know I might get some flack on this one, a couple eye rolls... Five stars? Yes. I think this place deserves 5 stars now hear me out: 1.If you're ever looking for something, no matter how far out it is, you're going to find it at this location. If you don't find it here after a couple visits, than chances are the thing you're looking for is too weird and you probably should give up and never tell anyone you were hunting for it. 2.No matter how crazy busy this place is, you always have room to move around. There are so many racks and rows of clothing or misc. house junk that you can always find some space, no elbows needed. 3.Want a little inside scoop? They offer a Saver's program you can join (for free and takes one second) where they send you emails on deals that are only offered to Saver's club members. This past weekend it was 50% clothing, accessories and bed/bath. Can't beat that. 4.It's clean. As clean as a second hand clothing store can be, and with a place this huge that can't be a small task. They have lots of fitting rooms so the wait is never long and usually someone is there to assist you with finding a fitting room. 5.I always find some kick butt treasure. Every time. I tend to only shop here on sale days because even though I'm giving this location 5 stars (here it comes...) the prices are sometimes crazy high. I'm one of those. I have to admit I shy away from this store. I find it overwhelming when I go in. It is huge and there is just so much stuff. I am not one to spend hours going through racks. I just get frustrated when I can not find anything. I have noticed on the few occasions that I have been asked to go with a friend that not everything is cheap. At least not cheap for used clothing in my opinion. So even though you are in a second hand store, you should still pay attention to what you are paying. I usually go to Value Village around Halloween time. They get some great costumes in. I do see the appeal of the store for those that can sift though racks, to find those hidden gems. Value Village always seems so busy. The store is always packed and people come out of the store double fisting with plastic bags full of clothes! I admire people who can shop these stores. They have incredible patients and those people are usually the ones who find the great deals! I will find a few items from time to time, but for the most part, I don`t take the time to root through the shelves. This store isn`t near as nice as the new one in Woodlawn. The new store is much cleaner and the selection is much fresher than the Bayers Lake location. Value Village is my favourite Halloween store to shop in. Value Village has dropped it's main selling point off of the spectrum in recent times. "Value" thrown out the window... and the benefit of the charity, negatable now when they are taking so much off the top and not paying the charity anymore. The store is dingy, and gross. It's almost shameful to be seen buying in there now. Ownership has decided to jack the prices, but not the donations they make in an effort to make more money. The staff has been caught stealing (a donation was made, and intended to be purchased.. but the item was "lost" by a staff member).. just not a good place to be. read more

While there is a pretty good selection of clothing and shoes, I can only give this Value Village a 3 star rating, though I'd say it's actually more of a 2.5. I found some clothes I like and the prices aren't bad at all. However, this location loses some serious points for the store itself. This store is not easy to navigate. If it's even a little bit busy, it basically becomes a human obstacle course. It could definitely be organized better. The staff at this location aren't all that impressive. I ended up purchasing my items without trying them on and putting back anything I couldn't tell would fit because I couldn't find anyone to let me into the fitting room. When I went to pay, only one register was open even though a bunch of workers were clustered at the front. Value Village isn't for everyone. Admittedly: the smell isn't the best (but not the worst by far!) and the junk-to-gem ratio can be off putting; however, there is something so therapeutic about scouring the aisles, your mind free to wander...and all of sudden! Ohhhh thrifting...the shopping phenomenon where you'll lose a few hours to save a few bucks. Needless to say, it just goes against pretty much everything I believe in but yes, I'll occasionally end up on the Value Village circuit looking for unobtainable costume pieces before giving up and paying much, much more for brand new things elsewhere. Yay me. Being more Team Frenchy's than Team VV, I never quite feel inspired to go through the Value Village racks during my visits. I know it's a more hospitable shopping environment than the good ole bins at Frenchy's, but I just find the product on the hangers so all over the place that I rarely know where to begin. Couple that with a largely apthetic staff, and you've got a place that I just don't really love to visit. What I will say is that they had a marvelous Halloween section this past year, packed with many of the exact same brands and products as your pop-up party stores at about a third of the cost. I feel like I'm always waxing and waning over which VV location I'm most fond of. If I get a good score one day, I proclaim that location the top, but one visit of empty-handedness, and I'm a fair-weather fan. I always enjoy a stroll through Value Village, unless it's super busy, then I find it to be a mildly irritating experience. You can find everything at Val-Ville, and sometimes there are good sales on items when they're trying to blowout the inventory (check out the CDs and books). Prices aren't always pleasing, as it seems that they're assigned willy-nilly, but if it's an item you're dying to have then chances are the cost will be worth it. The miscellany section at this location is pretty good, along with their "art" area. If you're in the mood and ready to peruse, then head to the Halifax VV location. It's mega-sized and boasts tons of options, at prices lower than if you were to buy it new! read more

Not the best value anymore but still a good place to shop. Value Village is a very big, second hand clothing store. They have a very large selection and I always walk away with a few items of clothing. But I have recently been trained by some smart friends on how to find similar deals in other stores. Some of the prices at Value Village are the best one could find. But at other times I was surprised to find similar pricing of the same clothes at major clothing stores! A bit shocking to say the least. That being said, when I see a t-shirt or shirt for five dollars at Value Village, I don't shy away from it nor do I go to other stores and try to price check the item in hopes of saving a dollar. The staff are definitely not the friendliest but they aren't mean either. I sympathize because I can understand how hard it would be to work at such a large, second hand clothing store. But since you have chosen to work there, lets all smile together shall we? I am happy Value Village exists and that they have a few locations in Halifax. The new location is an improvement from the old location, however there are lots of issues. This store has always had a funk! Everything I buy there I have to wash 3 times before I can feel totally ok with wearing it.. The staff has changed a lot, so therefore the customer service levels have always varied depending the person, so it is highly unreliable in that sense. I still shop here because its better then other options in second hand clothing. Sum up, customer service not great, product is funky smelling, often over priced, and your choices are limited to what happens to have come in that week/month... I have been to this store a few times, and have never had above an "okay" experience. I find the workers are very rude, the store itself is very unorganized, stuff is just kind of thrown around where ever. I understand it's a thrift store, but I went to the one in Fredericton like once a week and LOVED it, so I guess it just doesn't even compare to that store. I can never seem to find anything here worth buying or that I am looking for, and there's always a bunch of people who seem to be in a hurry and ticked off about something. Value Village is another one of those places I have a love/hate relationship with. The bf LOVES it, as he loves to tinker and find hidden treasures (junk). Me not so much, he drags me here more often then I would like. But, occasionally it is my idea. Strange, I know. So yes, you can find some gems. I have gone in not wanting to and look around only to pass the time. Sometimes I do find some neat things- I bought 2 pairs of shoes yesterday for $12, not too shabby. Sometimes I find clothes, sometimes I don't . It's a hit or miss experience that is for sure. The bf is the t-shirt/hoodie type - Do you know what that means? It means that he always "needs" new t-shirts and hoodies and that's practically all he wears (after 3 years of trying, I have almost given up on seeing him in collared shirts when we're not going to a wedding).. And if he finds one he likes, he's on it. There is no stopping him - This obsession has gotten so out-of-hand that our agreement now is; if he buys one, he throws out 5....OK, the point is he can find tonns of t-shirts and hoodies at VV. So, yes VV I can enjoy you, but I sometimes I just don't want to. I don't like the smell, thrifting through hangers, and the line-ups (on weekends) to try things on. I also hate doing laundry and I know that if I purchase clothing from you that gives me more laundry to do :( read more

IMPORTANT:: people, check your stuff. Wash everything and dry everything! Even the clothing you are wearing. I found what appeared to be a dried bed bug on the bottom of my teddy bears foot and it traumatized me because I have been sleeping with it. Luckily I put that into the washer and dryer when I had first brought it home. But what if I didn't? I do love this place but now I'm kinda freaked out, that same day there was a painting "don't let the bed bugs bite" for sale. I'm not sure who would have bought that, because it's a nightmare to have them and not worth losing anything you could ever bring home from a thrift store! Place is large, huge assortment of stuff. I wish they had a donation benefit like they do at Savers in the USA, where when you donate items you can get a discount off your purchase. I feel people may be more inclined to donate, however FYI Canadian diabetes association sells their items they collect to value village. Some things are overpriced.. But then you have some really good deals - it's hit or miss and you really have to have a knack for thrifting or stay a while browsing to find a good assortment of gems. It's one of the best stores in the city. But please make sure to follow the first paragraph for any thrift store you visit locally so we can stop the city problems from getting out of control. read more

Ah, Value Village. Once, in days gone by, my favourite thrift store. Then it seemed as though their prices went up, and some of their variety/quality of merchandise went down, and my feelings began to change. Don't worry VV, we'll always have the memories. And of course our favourite spooky time of year, Halloween. Though I may not shop here nearly as much as I used to the rest of the year, come October I can't wait to take a stroll or six through here looking for costume ideas, accessories and make-up, decorations, and just general inspiration to get me excited about this most fun of holidays. I especially love that they have not only ready-made costumes for purchase, but also a rack or two of clothing items that can be incorporated into costumes (e.g., clothes from previous decades, uniforms, etc.), for anyone who likes to piece their own together. Let's be honest I don't actually shop at Value Village for anything of imporance, I use Value Village as my go-to tickle trunk solution. Halloween costume? Check. Themed party needs? Check. Broken lamp stand as a DIY project? CHECK! (I can't promise stellar results, but I try). Most recently, I was preparing for a 90's themed yelp event, and I visited the trusty Chain Lake Value Village. It had plenty of options, all well organized, so within 25 minutes of looking around, I was set! This place is really well organized, and it's generally kept that way. Staff are courteous, but it's more of a self-selection place - don't really expect help from the staff unless you specifically ask for it. Also, Saturdays are pretty busy, so try for a week day or night for lower traffic. No one wants to fight over the dressing rooms! read more

I always second-guess myself as I walk into Value Village. The sheer volume of thrift-store goodness can be overwhelming at first, especially if you don't go often. Soon, though, you get the hang of the different categories and find your thrifting groove. There are racks upon racks of different categories - ladies' wear, men's wear, children's clothing, houseware ... anything you can imagine can be found at Value Village. Don't expect to pay Frenchy's prices, though - the tags at Value Village are marked up to about double your regular second-hand store prices. This store tends to get a little more chaotic than the new Dartmouth location, but a large proportion of my wardrobe has come from here, so it's certainly not difficult to find good stuff, even when it gets a little messy. Around Halloween it gets especially crazy because they stock a lot of costumes in addition to the costumes you can just make using the awesome clothes. The dressing rooms get crowded and slow because people tend to ignore the limit on the number of items you're supposed to try on at one time (myself included - no point in getting undressed more than once), and there's barely enough room to turn around in the change rooms to see how fab you look in what you've just tried on, but I guess that's part of the charm. I still enjoy shopping here, because I like my clothes broken in. And it's always worth a bit of digging when you find that little gem. read more

Navigating mega thrift stores is a special breed of shopping, not for everyone, but those who are into it know they can find some amazing things hidden in the miles of aisles (sorry Joni). I am one of these folks, and particularly love the linens and house wares sections. Nothing gets my value-hunting juices flowing like a stack of vintage hankies or beautiful old vase. And at prices that are often under a dollar, I have to restrain myself from filling a cart. This particular VV is mega, for sure, but I found the employees impressively nice. Floor staff were polite as they wheeled awkward carts around the store, and the girl who checked me out even knocked 20 cents off of a mug I bought. Some of you who may not be interested in saving 20 cents and to those I send my pity, as you will never know the joy of getting a deal on an already ridiculously low-priced item. read more

I find the prices are increasing considerably.....but still have shopped and found great deals on certain items. The issue I have is that twice I've been asked "do you qualify for seniors discount"? Although this would be helpful for those who ARE seniors.......nobody should be asked this. There should be very well seen signs that allow the customer to choose for themselves. To begin, if you're looking for a Polaroid camera or a VCR, this should be your first stop. The shelves of value village are usually lined with these nostalgic types of electronics; great for hipsters, artsy fartsy types and those of us who love watching home movies from family Christmases gone by. Elsewhere in this Value Village there are a lot of really awful clothes. It definitely doesn't stack up to the Dartmouth location in terms of quality. That's not to say it's impossible to find cool garments here, you just need to be really patient and have a very keen eye. Certainly the staff aren't going to be much help, many of them seem to be zombies in red smocks, shuffling through the store, not really saying much...eating brains (ok, not eating brains). Value Village can be a fun time, if you go, definitely check it out with friends. See who can create the most ridiculous outfit! You'll have a great laugh and there is a small chance (especially at this location) that you might find something you really like for a rock bottom price. Remember, Value Village takes all those @donations@ they round up from you while pretending to be The Canadian Diabetes Association, or Phoenix House, and the sell this stuff at pretty high prices for what it is, while ALL the profits go to a single family in the US. They donate some pittance to the charities in order to use the name when they call you begging for your stuff. value village has gotten a lot more expensive in just the last year or so. VV's prices certainly are higher than the salvation army, and often times you can find dollarama housewares for sale for more than their original price. this is stupid and a badly thought out result of their automatic pricing system. also, a very small amount of their revenues actually go to charity. with all these drawbacks considered, i will not stop visiting this VV. It is huge, new, and clean. My taste may not be everyone's taste (i am a vintage diehard and would rather die, hard, than wear low rise jeans), but i always find some fabulous things here that would make a vintage-lover's heart sing. may I brag? okay, just a few items... silk blouses, super high-rise pink wranglers (and purple ones too!!), levi's galore, suede heels...multiple suede heels, embroidered and tooled leather belts, angora sweaters from the 1950s, navajo blazers...etc. crap, i probably should not have shared this information. read more

This is a huge store (over twice the size of their old location!) with a great selection, and generally pretty good prices. Sure, there might be some questionable prices sometimes, but for every one I find, I find three great deals. The staff are friendly and helpful, the store is well organized, and they have really good sales for Club Card holders. Whether I'm shopping for clothes, books, furniture, housewares or fabric, I always find great stuff, often new or like-new. I might not always find what I'm looking for, but I'll find lots of things I didn't even know I needed! read more

I used to shop at Value Village until they posted a huge "COMMUNITY DONATION CENTER " sign on the top of their store, insinuating that it was a not for profit organization. This is very misleading and gives people the wrong idea. They do even less than many businesses in the area, who don't advertise themselves as such. They should take the sign down as they are interfering with real non-profit organizations such as Parker Street, Salvation Army and Hand in Hand. It use to be cheaper. Not as cheap as frency's but less then now. I guess like everything prices go up. I still go,,but i don't buy near as much as i use to. I try to wait for 30% off coupons. Use to go when they had 50% off days, but then it use to be on everything in the store. Now it's not. I sometimes wonder about their pricing. It's like there is no logic to it. I worked at Value Village and I guess that value went right out the window along with ethics. I worked there last year and was told to price some items at its original cost. They promote that customers get first dabs at items and that is not true at all. When I worked there management was getting first dabs. As for OSD, that is another story. I have caught people stealing but never said anything as I am not a rat. They let the wrong people run such an organization. It is terrible. read more
