This museum is amazing! One of my favorites I would go again next time I visit Amsterdam.

If you live in or ever visit Amsterdam you really should take the time out to go here. I think it's 9 euro admission if I remember correctly. No student discount. Children under 17 go free with valid ID. It's a very spacious museum, with 3 floors, all very high security, you can't go in with big rucksack on your back and any small bags you do have are screened or else you leave them in the cloakroom. Wow what a body of work Vincent Van Gogh had, such a pity, like many others, his true genius was not recognized while he was still alive. Beside every painting of his on display there are details of when it was painted and a short bio on the story behind it. There are other artists work on display in this museum too, paintings from artists that were mentors to Van Gogh and who he drew inspiration from. The museum is near the famous "I amsterdam" monument, so you shouldn't have any problem finding it :) I'm not usually one for museums in general, but you really don't have to be into art to be blown away by this, the paintings would move just about anybody. For he who appreciates time, love, pain and suffering, this is a must see. read more

I couldn't tell you the first thing about this kind of art if I tried. I'll talk about photography and cameras all day long, but if you veer into brush-strokes and all the different eras... You will lose me faster than a stinky dude on a blind date. That being said, I really enjoyed my visit. I was with a friend, who I swear spent our entire time in Amsterdam until then talking about it, and she dragged me here. I was absolutely dreading it, but it was really nice. It's modern, expansive and well laid out, and achieved the impossible; it intrigued someone who was entirely uninterested. I'm completely guilty of actually reading painting captions by the end of the visit. read more

The Van Gogh Museum is located in Museumplein, along with the Rijksmuseum and the Stedelijk Museum. It costs 15 EUR for adults, which is a bit pricey, but worth it if you're not doing any other museums. It's relatively small, but they've packed a lot into it. It's basically four and a half floors, each separated logically into sections of Van Gogh's life. The information on the wall (presented in Dutch and English) are good precursors for each section. They provide context and things to look out for (e.g. what period these paintings cover, how his brush strokes and styles changed, who influenced him during this time, etc.). Definitely worth reading before looking around. There are also pieces from other artists strewn about, but not without logic. Most are painters that inspired Van Gogh. The top floor had some photographs, but I was running low on time, so I didn't spend too much focus in that section. Get there early because it crowds quickly with tourists and tour groups. It's not a huge space and the paintings are relatively small, so you'll want to stay ahead of the tour groups whenever possible. All in all, it's a very walkable museum. I say allocate 1.5 hours to it, or 2 if you want to be thorough and visit the gift shop afterwards. Speaking of gift shops, if you want to save some money, there's a guy running a souvenir stand right outside the exit with items similar to what the museum store sells, but for much cheaper! Got a gift set of coasters for under 10 EUR. They were selling it for almost twice that inside! read more

I went to the Van Gogh Museum on a Thursday afternoon with my parents and sister. We bought our tickets in advance online- which I recommend you do because the line can be very long if you don't buy tickets online in advance. I have to admit, I have never been the biggest fan of museums, but I had a good time at this museum. It is a very large museum and the employees are all very helpful and nice. It is a very clean and safe space. If you are bringing a large bag or backpack, you have to check it after entering the museum but before going to see the artwork. There are 4 floors of Van Gogh's artwork and I suggest you go all the way to the top floor and then start looking at his work. It is much easier to do it that way. I was disappointed that Stary Night is not in this museum, since that was the main art piece I wanted to see, but it was fine! Overall, this is a super fun and interesting museum and it is a great activity to do while you are in Amsterdam! read more

Even though I'm no art expert and even though I knew very little about Van Gogh before visiting this museum, if you're in Amsterdam it's worth the stop. They have a great collection of his works laid out chronologically along with biographical information, the combination of which offers great insight into the background and progression of his artistry. The museum also offers audio tours and on the upper floors there are additional galleries with different artists and styles that may also appeal to you. All in all I spent a comfortable hour and a half there. If you went to go really in depth you could spend at least two hours. My only complaints were that no photography was allowed inside (understandable) and that Starry Night was not there. I know that MoMA currently has it but that would be a terrific addition to this great collection. read more

I came, I saw, and that's about it really. It's a great art gallery with an enormous amount of pieces. I appreciate the way it was set up to allow the art to speak, but I think that also gave me a lackluster feeling about the experience. I called this an art gallery because it's much more that than a museum. Most areas are plain white walls. When it's crowded, this place moves like a conveyor belt and it really takes away from being able to gaze and appreciate all that is around you. That's not the museums fault though. If you like Van Gogh (who doesn't?) than this museum is the place for you. The museum has a long line, so I would recommend you get there early, so you don't have to wait too long. We got there around noon, and had to wait about an hour to get in. At the door we bought museum passes, so we could avoid long lines at the other museums. The museum is crowded, but there is still room to walk around, and a must see if going to Amsterdam. read more

I felt however that it would have been a shame had I traveled all the way to Amsterdam and not went to the Van Gogh Museum. I'm glad I took the time to visit it and see the works of a famous artist. The museum was easy to walk to in the downtown area. When I went, there was a short line. I recommend making time to fit this museum into your Amsterdam visit. Excellent! There's as much reading as there are paintings and that's a great way to learn about Van Gogh, those who influenced him and those whom he influenced. Bathrooms have always been well kept when I've visited. It does get crowded so mornings are best. AND it's open late on Fridays, with events sometimes! read more

I would recommend this very nice museum only if you are a fan of Van Gogh, since his works are pretty much 95% of the art exhibited. Many of the paintings will be recognizable, but many of his masterpieces are on exhibit at other museums or in private collections throughout the world. A little pricey for the experience. I commented to my wife that even I could have painted or drawn better when viewing some of his stuff, and others, were amazing. It was most interesting to see how he evolved from one style to the next to the next to the next throughout his attempt at a career. You can also see in his art, his gradual decline into depression and insanity. The guy certainly had his problems. Still, a gem museum in A-Dam, but I wouldn't place this on my "must see" list unless you have the time. Allow an hour and a half. I *LOVED* going through this museum. My boyfriend and I, along with a couple friends, went here on our last full day in the Netherlands. van Gogh has been one of my favourite artists for as long as I can remember, and I didn't have the opportunity to go to the museum when I was there (NL) in '96, so I was very excited to get to see it. The only thing I wish were different would have been to have allowed photography inside, though I can understand why it is not. They did, however, allow pictures in front of one blown-up van Gogh self-portrait right inside before the exhibit actually began, so that was nice. I got to see some of my faves of his works, as well as learned a LOT more about the artist as a person than I'd ever known before. I was really impressed with the amount of information about the man, his art, his family, history, friendships--everything. It was definitely worth the cost of admission. For foreign travelers, they had guide books in many different languages, all free for the taking, and I would have bought a ton of things in the gift shop if I thought I had the space to bring it back with me--most of it very reasonably priced, especially for museum shop type offerings. read more

It was a pleasant surprise for me. I am not a huge artsy guy, but after a day of walking around Amsterdam, decided I needed to slow down and take in some actual culture, having been surrounded by 17th century architecture all day. The exhibit is fascinating, and lays out the pieces of work along the chronology of his lifetime. The 3D thing I appreciated but didn't get much out of. But it was still part of the experience. The whole thing took me about 45 minutes, there were only a couple other people in the exhibit, and I stopped to read every quote, see every 3D thing, and "take in" the art as an amateur would. To me, definitively worth it, recommended, and I feel much more cultured as a result. I certainly know enough about Van Gogh now to impress people at a dinner party now. Which alone is worth twice the price of admission. read more

I am not a museum person, but I have always admired van Gough and was happy I allowed my husband to talk me into visiting the museum. We went early enough so that even though it was busy, it wasn't crazy. I enjoyed the tour and the opportunity to learn more about Vincent beyond Starry Night. For anyone who likes Van Gogh an absolute must-see in Amsterdam. However, it is so famous that it is really crowded in there. Sometimes it is even hard to actually see the works, which I found really annoying. I like to take my time to let the works sink in and that was quite impossible. It is a simple thing: impossible to visit Amsterdam and not stop by this museum. Our visit to the Van Gogh Museum was awesome. Was good to see his work from his early days and the progression through to his last works. Also lots of information about his life and friendships and how this related to his work. I was here in March of 2012 while Sunflowers and Almond Blossoms, two of his most popular works, were on loan to the Philadelphia Museum of Art. Living in Philadelphia and having seen the Van Gogh exhibit weeks prior to my trip to Amsterdam, the entire experience was really fantastic. Since the exhibit in Philadelphia was so fresh in my mind I opted not to do the audio tour, which I am so glad I chose not to because my Dutch friends gave me their own tour, knowing so much of the history themselves. I loved the entire flow of the museum. Although we only spent a few hours there, I felt as if I could return and spend an entire day walking through. The entire flow and architecture of the building is amazing. I loved the centralized bar area, it gave such a modernized European feel to the space. read more

I give it five stars because Van Gogh is a artist!!! I enjoy his work he did. I don't think the 35-55 minute lines to buy tickets are worth it. They have a flat rate even with outside vendors. My recommendation is to buy from vendors outside with a blue line ticket which gives u an exact time to go in. No camera picture is allowed in the Van Gogh museum. Found that out a few times and was confused as to where you could and where you couldn't . I posted what I thought I could do as no one told me differently. read more

Amazing museum with lots of recognisable Van Gogh paintings including new sunflowers and sled portrait withy straw hat. The audio guide was really worth the 5€. TAKE YOUR BABIES! Not only do you get to skip the incredibly long line... You can take strollers and diaper bags with you throughout the museum. I'm not sure what age of child you need to skip the line but we were able to with our 7 month old. read more

Didn't have my favorites that I would have liked to study, but nonetheless, it was inspiring to see Van Gogh's paintings up close. The line to purchase day of can get long, but it can also move fairly quickly. No picture taking allowed, but I saw people sneaking photos without flash of course. read more

Van Gogh is by far my favorite artist of all. I knew that I loved him, but I didn't know how much until I visited the museum. It is all about him. You get the scoop on his life - beginning to end - and you get to see so much of his work. All of the periods. Student to master. His life and his career were both too short. Such a brilliant but troubled man. His self portraits will break your heart! Honestly I was totally choked up going through the museum - I didn't want my companion to see me holding back my tears. What beautiful works of Van Gogh. When we went, you really didn't get to see "ALL" of his works because some were either on loan or sold to other museums. This museum gets pretty busy with the tourist crowd (me included). I was very excited to be coming here, since I love Van Gogh's works and like learning about his tragic life. Anyway, the museum is big! There are quite a few of his artworks, but there are also those from others. They include those from his friends and artists who have influenced him. I like the fact that there were works by Toulouse-Lautrec and Millet (if I remember correctly), two artists whose works I love. The museum took a while to get through as there are room after room to see. I think the painting I like the most is his "Potato Eaters", which I didn't know he painted. I also like the fact that they included a history of Van Gogh's life that included the stages of his artistic career. I definitely recommend that you visit this museum if you are in Amsterdam. read more

It was 15 Euro to come in here I think. Waited in the rain. Line was probably about a 45 minute wait. When we got out around 9pm (they close at 9:30pm) there was no line at all. I'm sure you can view the whole thing in 15 minutes. The guided tour was kinda lame, but you should do it anyway because it's free. You won't see his Starry Night painting here, but you will see the flower pot one. The lounge downstairs is pretty good. Loud music, lights, drinks and comfortable seats. I do not recommend passing through because it is a waste of time and money unless you like Van Gogh. There are more stuff to do in Amsterdam that is more interesting. read more

Exactly what you would expect from this museum. Fair price, takes approx. 2 hours to see everything. 4 Floors. I am surprised how many portraits he did of himself... rather vain. Haha! My favorite was the skeleton smoking a cigarette.... very cool. Check it out! read more

Great Museum that does not need my review, but I needed to vent my frustration for the amount of time I needed to wait on line. I took one of their cruise combos since 3 people recommended it. The Live commentaries on the tour were a lot of help for the 2 brain cells I had left from the night before. The plus side to this were the unlimited rides around town. No pressure or time limit. I took my time and had a great guide. Give it a run. Van Gogh's Art up front is definitely an experience, other than beautiful woman riding bikes around this beautiful City. read more

This is likely the best place to appreciate the work of Van Gogh. The collection is extensive. Van Gogh cut off his own ear, maybe Gauguin did it. The works are numerous. You can see four floors of art. It might be like a few rooms in the Louvre. read more

An absolute must see while in Amsterdam! I suggest buying a timed ticket. I purchased one, and only had to wait about 10 minutes before entering. Fantastic museum! Really enjoyed learning so much more about VG. The lighting and presentation was amazing and this might be the first museum where I learned a ton about the artists displayed.
