How did I pass up the chance to visit this museum the first time I was in Amsterdam? Well, I won't question my immutable personal history: instead, I am thankful that I paid the 19€ for an adult ticket with audio tour. (It's 14€ without the audio tour.) Another handy thing is that the ticket includes permanent and temporary exhibitions, so you don't have to worry about wandering into the wrong area and getting shooed by guards. My mum and I went on a Monday afternoon, and it was quite busy. There were a few tour groups milling about, but I'm really glad that they don't allow photography (or recording of any kind) in the museum. Otherwise, visitors probably would be staring mostly at the backs of people's heads rather than van Gogh masterpieces. (Please don't be that jerk who does take photos in the museum.) We used our audio tour gadgets faithfully, which helped drag out our stay for several hours even in this relatively small museum. My favorite feature of the audio tour was being able to hear readings of van Gogh's letters and getting much more insight into his life and personality. The temporary exhibition was all right: there were a couple of van Gogh pieces in it, but most of it was work from other artists. It was interesting to see work on the same theme from various artists, but we wandered back into the main museum to finish seeing the rest of the pieces by van Gogh before 5:45pm when the gift shop closed. The verdict: I'd highly recommend this attraction as a must-see to anyone who finds themselves in Amsterdam and appreciates van Gogh's art style. read more

Sunflowers are currently on loan. Boo My main reason for even having this museum on my list was to SEE the sunflowers. When some of Van Goghs paintings come to denver i went to see them, and asked, are the sun flowers here.. i was shunned and informed that the sun flowers do not travel... ok. So i ended up in Amsterdam visitng friends and thought - well grand - i'll get to check out these wonderful sun flowers... Alas, they do travel, and they were traveling... sigh. i did get a photo with a face wall sized version, but not the same. The rest of the museum - tip - if you go during high traffic times, get the shorter entry line ticket, outside of the museum. There are usually combo packs for the canal ride, iamsterdam card, etc. The museum is 5 stories tall. The first 2 floors have some interesting and fun areas. Each portion has a background and info regarding Vincent Van Gogh. This visit the top 1.5 stories were under construction and unavailable. All it all it is a nice set up, interesting info regarding his life, info on how the levels of the paintings are visible through xray etc. Can't say i'd return unless i lived in Amsterdam, but if art interest you, take a peek. read more

Fantastic! I'll be the first to admit that I am not the first person to raise my hand as a self described museum expert. All I know is what I like. I cannot explain it but it is fine for me. I had expected to just drop in here and check the place off of my "to do list" Well, 3 hours later I found myself fixated on so many paintings that I had only seen in books, on posters and postcards and hearing the dreaded "will be closing" announcement (get out). If you love art, you'll love this museum! Location: It's in the center of Amsterdam and surrounded by several other museums so it's the perfect stop on your museum adventure. The entire place is clean, and well organized. But because it's one of the most popular museums in Amsterdam expect it to be busy! I recommend getting there first thing when they open and buying your tickets online to avoid crazy lines. Yes, even on off season travel times. What to expect: You will need to pay for audio tour, and if you select the wrong one, DON'T expect to get your money back. This was the only disappointment! Van Gogh's art is organized well and follows his life with the evolution of this painting career. I liked that you could listen to letters he wrote to his brother and other important family members during difficult times. These letters are also on display and show sketches of some of his ideas before they became paintings. Food: There is a nice place to eat indoors with several food options. I recommend going before or after usual eating times to avoid long lines. There are also several toilets throughout the museum which are free with your museum entry. Shopping: If there's one thing this museum does not lack are the store options. There are several of them and each one sells unique museum souvenirs. Wonderful museum that really explores the life of Van Gogh. It sheds light and presents art work of his predecessors, his contemporaries, and of course, Van Gogh himself! I liked the layout of the museum and found it easy to navigate. The crowds weren't too bad for a weekday afternoon, despite a 30 minute wait at the ticket booth. I thought the museum did well in presenting his life story and garnering sympathy for his sickness and demise. Definitely make room in your Amsterdam itinerary for this - there's no other place in the world dedicated to Van Gogh like it. Enjoy! read more

Beautiful. There is not much to say other than that! This is the largest collection of Van Gogh's works in the world, and they are all lovingly and beautifully displayed throughout the many floors of this impressive building. I am a big fan, so it was easy to impress me, but even my husband - who is not one for museums - loved his time here. Lots of great tidbits about his personal and professional life to be learned here. I really enjoyed reading about his training and rise to greatness (and tragic end) as it corresponded to his works on display. We were here in the busy summer, but didn't feel like we spent a horribly long time in line. I think next time, though, I would buy tickets in advance. Worth every Euro! read more

The museum is by no means large. And I must admit I expected to see at least some of his most famous paintings. However, I enjoyed my fairly short stop at the Van Gogh Museum. I purchased my ticket online and saved it to my phone, which allowed me to skip all of the lines. I highly recommend that. When I went, which was on a weekday in winter, there were not that many people. However, during summer, I can only imagine how busy and cramped it could get. I felt satisfied spending about an hour here - did not feel as though I missed much, and felt it was fair for the 15 euro price. The Van Gogh museum was one of the most profound and impacting art museums I've been to. The multi-floor layout is well planned, each exhibiting different phases of Van Gogh's life work. My favorite sections included the room with the correspondence between Vincent and his brother Theo. These two men loved each over dearly and their story is powerfully loving and of course tragic with Vincent's untimely death. Vincent's strokes are everywhere: magnified, blown up, taking up complete walls and serving as a backdrop for his diverse body of work. Seeing his work up close was the most impacting, of course there's something special about the "classics" the ones you see in every text book, but his lesser known work can be most powerful. I loved all of his self portraits! You can almost bear witness to his painting in his studio, drawing those signature strokes, producing them one by one. Just amazing! We had to leave and take a quick break, eat, and come back in. While there we also saw the Easy Virtue exhibit which shows various portrayals of prostitutes and prostitution in earlier days. An absolute abundance of sexuality in this exhibit! Its voyeuristic, you feel as though you're witnessing too much privacy in the lives of these people from another time. The exhibit was the perfect thing to add to our first visit to the red light district. Devoting a full day to this grand monument for Van Gogh is not a bad idea, you will no doubt need time after your visit to reflect and process the emotions conjured here. read more

This is probably the coolest museum I have ever been too! There is a DJ, bar, dining area- it is a great place to go and spend a few hours and take everything in and just enjoy the artwork. I spent hours walking around with my headphones on looking at the magnificent pieces. I am not really an art person by any means, but I would recommend stopping at a cafe first... just to relax yourself so you don't rush through the experience. A wonderful museum in a city of terrific museums (and I say this as a native New Yorker who has spent many hours in my hometown's art museums). It obviously helps to be a fan of Van Gogh's work, but the layout and presentation in this museum is such that even those who may not know the artist's work will come to appreciate him and the influence he had. The exhibits are laid out to maximize interest and viewing, and despite knowing a lot about Van Gogh before seeing the museum, I walked away feeling I had a new understanding and enjoyment of his vast talent. First off, I'm not much of a museum person but I enjoyed my two visits over the years to the Van Gogh Museum. This four story structure takes you chronologically through Van Gogh's life through his paintings. It also features paintings by some of his influences and temporary exhibits throughout the year from various artists. It's amazing how vibrant and colorful Van Gogh's paintings are specially as he sank further into depression! If you're really interested in Van Gogh definitely go for the audio guide. The museum is open from 10AM to 6PM every day except for Fridays when it's open until 10PM. Admission is 14 Euros for just the entrance and 19 Euros with an audio tourguide. If you're 17 and under, admission is free and a small charge if you want the audio tourguide. If you get the chance you better go see the Van Gogh museum now. It'll be closed for renovations from October 2012 to April 2013. If you really want to see some of his works during this time period go to the Hermitage Museum where they will be displayed. read more

I love Van Gogh! I was very inspired by him when I was a child and wanted to be an artist but I didn't like the thought of being poor, going insane and cutting off my ear...I ended up as an engineer but my love of art remains strong. I have visited the Van Gogh museum 8 years ago (& saw the most famous Starry Night then) and three times recently (I have a museum card) and am now a local. These visits include since the new entrance opened and I will be going again to see the comparison with Munch's work and to see his famous "the Scream". Apart from the absence of said Starry painting, I have found this museum gets better and better. They do seem to rotate the art and although I went twice in a month - once to go back and once with friends, what we saw was different although most of the main works remained the same including the 5 versions of the sunflowers, a collection of self portraits, a timeline of his life's work, Bedroom in Arles and wheatfield with Crows often famed to be his last work. You will have to visit yourself to find out if this is true. The complimentary exhibitions are well put together and they really seem to try and keep it quite fresh. You also get to see how Van Gogh himself was inspired by others. His Japanese influences for example are displayed. He really was inspired and continues to inspire today through his work and that of his Foundation setting the Museumplein ablaze this summer with a maze of beautiful sunflowers. Friday night is a great time to go here if you do not want to queue. I personally think this and the Rijksmuseum are must sees in Amsterdam. read more

The Van Gogh museum has an extraordinary architecture on a wonderful setting and it contains the largest collections of his paintings in the world. It is very impressive to see the different periods of his life portrayed through his work. When we visited "The Bedroom at Arles" one of his most famous painting was going reconstruction, but "The Bedroom" was painted on an external wall, very impressive. They also exhibited other paintings of the 19th century. This museum has a great gift shop, everything about Van Gogh paintings on different shape and forms and well priced. The lines to get into the museum are very long but if you have children you can enter without a wait. Once you are inside, it is ok because they manage well the ratio of people in and out of the building. read more

Seriously I don't even think I can say anything about this museum because it's name literally speaks for itself - this is an absolute must see if you happen to be in Amsterdam (unless you hate art, but if you hate art why are you reading this review). Anyway, this is a museum dedicated entirely to Van Gough, his life, and his work. While the majority of the art on display are Van Goughs, there are also paintings by his friends and his influences. There is also a collection of his letters. However, the thing that really blew my mind with regards to this museum is that, despite the fact that Van Gough killed himself because he was convince that he had failed as an artist, the security of the place (they video everybody who enters the museum, and request they remove their sunglasses), and the number of people pouring through the doors is mindblowing. I should mentioned that they are very supportive of the disabled - they will allow you to cut the line and they all also let their carers in for free. read more

The audio program was on point. Tip: don't be a fool and think you will get the same experience without the audio tour. It is really well done, and is engaging and not boring in any sense. I would expect to spend 2 hours there, but obviously that depends on the person. The cafe in the shop is well-stocked, though the salads are not the best. Rumor has it Friday nights are the best time to go because there are live DJs and less crowds. We went on a Saturday afternoon and it did get super crowded which was annoying (I have very little patience), but still I enjoyed myself. I would definitely be back if I ever visit Amsterdam again. read more

Excellent museum with a lot of biographical information about Van Gogh along with a large number of contextual works by other artists (including Gauguin, of course). The Van Gogh works themselves are more concentrated in the earlier part of his career, as the later ones have found their way into so many famous collections around the world. They do however, have his last painting, quickly executed on the morning of the day he shot himself. The temporary exhibit on Van Gogh's mental illness was quite fascinating (though I was somewhat curious, in a historically voyeuristic way, to know precisely what behaviour his neighbours were complaining about, which was not revealed). This museum is near the Rijksmuseum but I think it is best not to do them on the same day in order not be "over-arted." Note that despite the photos shown below, you are not supposed to take pictures, unlike the Rijksmuseum, where you can take as many as you like without flash. Allow about 2 hours - it is a medium-size museum. read more

Lovely! You get a real sense of Van Gogh, his life purpose, struggles and family and friends. There was much new information and splendid paintings and drawings on three expansive floors. The most profound experience was seeing the colors, hues and vibrancy of the original paintings and learning just how much the colors have faded due to the poor paint quality sold at the time. I told my sister-in-law that one of the experiences I really want to have in heaven is seeing Van Gogh's works as they were originally painted. Our group all agreed that a book needs to be compiled showing the colors of the original paintings on one leaf and the present colors on the opposite leaf. We had not realized that what we see today is only a pale facsimile of what was painted. This really tells you how much talent he has. read more

We only went to three museums in Amsterdam (Van Gogh, Rijks, and Anne Frank)... and this was my favorite by far! If you had to pick between the Van Gogh and Rijks Museum, I'd say pick the Van Gogh museum any day. To start with, it's a smaller, more manageable museum. Secondly, the entire museum main exhibit tells a story. That is, the story of Vincent Van Gogh. It goes through his stages of painting and the relations with his family and friends. Between admiring his paintings, you get to learn about the man that created them. The space is not as grand as the Rijks Museum, but is nice. The temporary special exhibit when we were there --- comparing Van Gogh with Munch --- was also very good (I like Van Gogh so much better than Munch... the textures of Van Gogh's paintings are so much more vivid)... and it was where some of Van Gogh's best (and later period) paintings were displayed. Definitely get here early! When we arrived (shortly after opening on a Sunday in November), there was no line. By the time we left (late morning), there was a huge line. Also, side note for parents with kids, there are a few hands-on exhibits throughout that my son enjoyed. read more

Maybe that type of art over in France is not just for me, but Van Gogh is right up my alley (minus the part where he chopped off his ear, maybe). Since the first time I saw two master pieces "Almond Blossoms" and "The Starry Nights" and I've been dreaming of seeing a room full of Van Gogh one day. Thanks to the Van Gogh Museum for offering this virtual tour that allows me to move around the space in real time and view each pieces in my own time and enjoy them like I used to be able to go to the museum. Obviously I can't rate such an extensive collection of Van Gogh's work anything less than 4 stars, and it truly is a wonderful museum with tons of interesting information on the iconic artist, but this museum is PAINFULLY crowded. I wish they'd cap how many people can enter every hour. It was hard to see the paintings or read info placards, especially if you're a polite person who hates to aggressively navigate crowds (ahem). I ended up leaving after only about 45 minutes (which of course made me frustrated about how much money I'd paid to enter) because I felt way too claustrophobic. This is a must see if you go to Amsterdam. I confess that I am a big Van Gogh fan. But I was very impressed with the organization of the museum. You should get the audio tour. With that you get headphones and an audio device that allows you to dial a number for a particular work. After listening to that narration, you have the opportunity to go on to extra pieces that give more in-depth views of Van Gogh's techniques, the history of the picture etc. or you can just go on to the next work. Be aware that you cannot take pictures of the works at all and they strictly monitor visitors. Go early as it can get crowded, allow about two hours, and don't miss the museum shop which has a lot of interesting items that would make good gifts for friends and family.
