After considering various alternatives, we chose Vancouver General Contractors to turn our dark and dated open concept first floor into a light, bright, modern open plan living masterpiece! It is simply splendid. From our first meeting with Shwan, the Project Consultant, when we discussed our vision, to the end of the project, we were part of all the decisions on everything that needed to be done. We were consulted extensively by Rose, Hoda and the Head Designer Zaineb. They listened and delivered. It was a big project with new floors, cabinets, huge pantry, fireplace, powder room, live wall, new doors and so many other details. The Head Designer, who we absolutely love, Zaineb Al-Saffar was on top of everything -- a great asset to have when we needed any communication with any concerns or questions. She worked very closely with both of us and with her Chief Contractor Mo; Mo was in charge of overseeing the whole project. Mo is great, knows his job, and is quite a perfectionist. A pleasure to work with. Central to the team, Ash and Sarah were absolutely perfect. Renovating our place like no others and recommending solutions to our concerns. The kitchen cabinets and the sitting benches by the window are splendid! Madan Mohan , from Danma Cabinets here in the lower mainland, designed and installed the kitchen and dining room. Excellent workmanship and professionalism. He responded with respect and agreement when we needed to have features corrected. He stands behind his product and workmanship!, The quality of product and workmanship by Canadian Countertops is undeniable; both the kitchen counters, backsplash and fireplace surrounding are perfect. Because of Covid-19, the live wall has not yet been delivered and installed, but this will be done as soon as health restrictions are lifted. Overall, Vancouver General Contractors has delivered well beyond our expectations and we marvel every day at how our home has been transformed. The team was professional, hardworking and produced a high standard of work. Also, I cannot sing high enough praises of Zaineb and Mo, who helped us through the whole process. We impulsively hired VGC for our kitchen renovation because I was naive. I believe they do charge a lot of hidden costs and push these "change order" fees that is ridiculous. They gave us a budget for certain items like say our sink... and because I wanted to choose a more expensive sink than their predicted cost, they were going to charge us a change order fee. It makes no sense, if I want to spend a few hundred dollars more on my sink why do they reap financial benefit from it when they gave us a lowball amount to spend in the first place. We were also plagued with mismanagement of our project. The project manager, Ali, they assigned to us was inexperienced and made several errors that delayed our project. He was definitely hired based on nepotism as he was the best friend of the manager, Hussain. The PM was fairly clueless, luckily my husband is a carpenter and he really had to micromanage many aspects of the project. This is a shame since we thought we were hiring VGC to take the stress of managing the projects ourselves. Then Ali left us halfway through project for personal reason. We did get a better PM, Mo after but he had to deal with the aftermath of the first guy plus the first contractor, Hamid decided to leave our project midway due to a dispute with how the company mismanaged payment to him. I was then harassed for weeks by Hamid to pay him or else he'd put a lien on our home. Meanwhile, the manager Hussain did not check in once to clarify or reassure us that we did not owe the contractor anything outstanding as we made payment on time to VGC. Then Hamid further disclosed that VGC definitely overcharge their clients and he said our project should not have taken as long as it did to complete, which left a very negative feeling for us. I felt anxious throughout thinking Hamid was going to show up and threaten my family and I have small children at home, it was not a good feeling. There was also design flaws where calculations were flawed and it required my husband to step in and alter the design and measurements. All in all the project was a disaster for us and we do feel overcharged. I do not recommend them. They were not professional and the trades they hire are also not professional. Don't be persuaded by the smooth salesman pitch from the manager, it's all smoke and mirrors because when things went wrong they definitely didn't care about their customer. read more

I would give them zero stars if that was an option. This company is nothing but scam. Poor work quality, high prices and zero accountability. They lie about the cost initially to lock the customers in, once you're committed, they start scamming you and before you know it, your place is an utter mess. We had to hire so many more trades to fix the mess they created. They use unlicensed trades to reduce their overhead which results in disasters in renovations. If you value your money and your sanity, stay away from 6the VGC Vancouver General Contractors. They are bad news. read more

In the beginning it was a great relationship, however I clued in that the high over cost weren't for us as well as costs for our renovations that were not disclosed and hidden in the Workscope which VGC would come back during the renovation period to obtain more funds. I decided to cancel the contract and and spoke with Hussain Khatheer (general manager/owner) who would not agree and justified the funds towards fees for "in-house" meetings with his staff (designer/project manager, staff, etc.). I had paid them $37,000 as a deposit and I was willing for them to keep $27,000 for preparing the plans and obtaining the building permits but Hussain would not refund part of the funds. If you decide to go with VGC, make sure you do your homework and prepare to pay more then you budget for. I brought VGC's Workscope to two other builders just for their opinion and both companies provided the same comments - "there are costs to items not noted or accounted for in the WorkScope which they will come back at you to recover" which raised red flags. Don't rush into your renovations and certainly don't feel pressured that you need to do your renovation before the "building codes" change, take the time. This was another reason why we jumped onto the wagon too soon with VGC because we were fed by Scott Brackett,VGC, Business Development Manager (who is no longer there) that building codes in Vancouver were changing the following year and we would need to get our application for building permit approved A.S.A.P. I assume if you have a "small" renovation then perhaps consider them, but stay away if you have a major reno that you would like done. read more

When my wife and I were expecting our first child, we hired Vancouver General Contractors to build a new bedroom addition to our small home. They did the job on-time and totally stress-free for us (especially for my dear wife!) and our baby son's new bedroom is a joy to be in, it's wonderful and warm and safe. I think the best part I like about Vancouver General Contractors is their attention to detail as basement contractors. I had them do my basement last week after a recommendation from a friend. They didn't install vapor barriers before hanging wallboards. Instead, they first dealth with existing moisture. They used Thermal insulation and polyolefin fabric which keep out the moisture. I am very happy with their work. For anyone looking for Vancouver basement contractors, I recommend them. read more
