See my review of the sister restaurant "next door" we went to two days earlier…read moreYea, it is worth the hype. For what you are getting coming out of the US this is a deal. Great atmosphere, perfect service, waiter did great job staring me To a local Merlot that was fantastic, musty, slightly tannic, 1100 crowns. I had braised rabbit in a mustard cream sauce, wife had braised veal cheeks which apparently on of the most popular. Beef tartar for app which perfect French bread toast. 3500 crowns all in, was way more than worth it. You need to make reservations in advance. We had to work to get in at 8:30 three days before- and we went on a Monday night. Chef apparently has a local CZ show which makes him celebrity. Strongly recommend

The space itself is grand and beautiful, but the experience went downhill immediately. The hostess seemed to wield all the power in the room--no smile, barely any eye contact, just a curt and judgmental "no reservation." The restaurant was far from full. She then added, "I only have a side table for you," as if that were some sort of compromise. We accepted. At first glance, the waiters looked well presented, but with a bit more observation, the illusion faded. Some had sagging pants, untucked shirts, and most concerning, repeatedly inappropriate hand placement while on the floor. It happened more than once, which was uncomfortable and distracting (see photo). Overall, the place feels very pretentious without delivering on substance. The food wasn't anything special, and the desserts were average at best and certainly not worth the hype or the attitude. I wouldn't recommend Cafe Imperial to friends, especially if you're expecting a warm welcome or standout desserts.

Eating in Prague can prove to be a challenge when you don't speak the language, but we were hungry…read moreand sick of street food so we stopped here to eat. The front portion of the restaurant is a coffee bar / sweet shop and the back area is an Italian-ish restaurant. We were able to communicate enough with the host and were shown to a table. The atmosphere is cool, like a vintage book shop. Since the menu (well, what were able to decipher anyway) seemed to lean heavily on Italian style dishes, we started with a bottle of prosecco. We were brought a small basket of hearty bread (along with an excellent bottle of olive oil) that we quickly devoured. For lunch, I ordered the tomato soup and salmon while hubby got the beef with truffles (barf)! The tomato soup was the star of the meal. It was well seasoned with bold flavors and tasted fresh and bright. It was a thick tomato puree topped with olive oil and pesto. The beef with truffles was presented beautifully but hubby deemed it a little disappointing. He said it tasted fresh but bland. My salmon was very undercooked for my taste but I know medium-rare is the order of the day when it comes to poached salmon. The portion size was ridiculously small too. Nothing was bad but nothing was great either. The food was serviceable and filled our bellies, but the only thing I'd ever want to have here again would be the tomato soup. This is the Czech Republic and smoking is allowed in doors so the entire place was super smoky. It's a European shock to the system for most Americans, so you need to be aware that there WILL be people lighting up right next to you. You simply can't avoid it here.

What was really interesting was the curd cheese dumpling dessert we shared. It was covered in yogurt with dried apricots, and it wasn't sweet, but very rich. The cheese kind of reminded me of the dessert goat cheese they serve in Barcelona. Anyways, it's worth a try, and an interesting czech dessert I'll have to get again while we're here.

I am crazy about their vegetable soup! Here, one will find great salads along with traditional Czech delicacies. Their meals are made to order using fresh ingredients and are beautifully presented. I think people make the mistake of ordering pizza when coming to these outdoor cafes...I didn't fly 8 hours from New York to sit here and have average pizza. Always order the Czech food, it's good even in the heat. I ordered the grilled pork medallions with peppercorn sauce and a side of green beans and some house bread, since after awhile one can get very tired ordering hranolky with everything. It was delicious, I loved the peppercorn sauce, and it was just enough food. I drank a mineral water, but it would certainly go well with Czech beer! Service was a tad on the slow side, but the main reason I give it 3 stars is location. It's sitting right on the crossroads of two busy streets so there's not much of a view and you have trams, cars, buses and throngs of tourists moving a few feet past where you are eating. However, as I was eating alone I was ok with how busy it was, I hate being tucked away in a shady corner somewhere in an empty place. It's a fine stop for a quick lunch, with fairly normal prices for the area
