Otroligt! One of the most architectural beautiful museums I've ever been too. I had come by myself so I was in no rush and spent a large part of the day just sitting on the risers near the ship and enjoying the view. The carvings on the transom were interesting, as well as the representation of what the painted transom would have looked like on it's maiden voyage. The mineral analysis of the skeletons of the crew was very interesting as it provided an idea of the lives the crew members lived. Not to be missed! read more

In short a ship sinks on its maiden voyage a long time ago. It stays underwater for 300+/- years. Fast forward to the 1950-ish, it discovered in the 20s and the process of excavation begins and the restoration continues to this day. I'm not great on history so if you want those details check out the review of Angela F & Donna B. The ship is now housed in a museum -- I do believe that the building was built around the ship. There was 4 floors that allow you to get close to the ship on all levels. Tons of history via text, audio and video. What blew me away - They were able to reconstruct the mast. Most were bits and pieces but there was one large sail that was 94% original - WOW! Details and recreation of the crew based on teeth found was both cool and creepy. You can chat with the restorators as they are working. The VASA only voyage may have lasted only 4 hours but the history is still being discovered to this day. read more

Awesome attraction in Stockholm is a must if you're planning on coming to Sweden. Showcasing the grand Viking ship that never got to set sail. The whole museum is seven floors so you really get to see the entire ship as well as exhibits on the construction and the people who built it and perished when it sank. Definitely worth the admission, it's truly not to be missed. Not to sound like a broken record but do purchase a Stockholm Card since admission is included. Highly recommended. read more

It's definitely worth a visit if you're visiting Stockholm. Even if you are not a museum person. The ship sank in the 1600s but has been preserved so well because it sank within 20 minutes after it set sail lol. The history of the ship and the engineering behind the preservation work were both fascinating. Be aware that the entire museum is only about the ship, nothing else. I would say you should only take about an hour to two hours there. The location of the museum is right in the heart of Stockholm and next to other popular-visited spots such as Grona Lund and the beautiful Djurgarden (a must-go!). Adult admission is 130SEK which is reasonable and I suggest purchasing the tickets online beforehand so you don't have to stand in line since it is a very popular museum. read more

This museum was great and is a definite must in Stockholm - you could literally spend an entire day here! There are multiple floors filled with lots of exhibits not only about the Vasa sunken ship, its history, how it was resurrected, and its maintenance / preservation going forth, but also about life on board the ship, how ship battles took place, the political / historical backdrop at the time, etc. This place is just a wealth of information, and it's very well maintained. There's a good mix of exhibits, sit-down movies, and interactive activities - for example, there is a cool area where you can play around with a simulation on how boat width, weight, number of sails used, etc. are affected by weather factors and whether or not a ship will capsize due to these issues. Pretty cool museum! The second you walk in, you see the BEAUTIFUL, majestic, and just awe-inducing vasa with its grandeur and beautiful aging. Tickets were 130kr but if you show any student ID (including picture form) you get a discount for 100kr! The museum is divided into 7 floors with the first 4 - 5 floors allowing you different levels to see the details of the ship. The 4th explained how the ship was retrieved and the 5th showed the way the sailors lived on the ship. Really great experience if you asked me since this is a ship over 300 years old! Come earlier (before 11:30) entrance to avoid ridiculous long lines. There's also a cafe on the 4th floor you can visit if you get hungry! read more

This is well worth a visit, one of the best things that I saw in Stockholm. The Vasa was a national embarrassment to the Swedes in the 1600s when it sank within 30 minutes into its first voyage but due to the brackish water around Stockholm the ship was almost perfectly preserved when it was pulled up in the 1960s. We waited for the English tour where you get the edited highlights of the history of the ship, the people who built it and various elements of the design. The ground floor had a collection of skeletons belonging to some of the poor souls who drowned on the Vasa, which made me thankful that I did not live in Sweden in the 17th century. The other levels are full of other interesting facts about the ship. I wish that I had more time there before we had to leave at closing time, well worth checking out. read more

This is another "must see" in Sweden. No pictures can do this justice nor capture the size of this ship. The intricate carvings on the ship are wild. If you're going during the summer be prepared to wait in line outside- Everyone wants to see this ship and it's certainly worth the wait. read more

#1 place to visit on TripAdvisor - I'm sort of conflicted about this museum because while the story of the ship is impressive, personally, this kind of museum wasn't all that interesting to me. Luckily admission wasn't that costly, but this isn't somewhere I would visit again/recommend as a *must do* :/ I could tell a LOT of work went into this museum - collecting history, storytelling, remaking/rebuilding parts of the preserved ship...etc. which is definitely worth mentioning. If you're interested in boats/history you'll probably love this museum! It just wasn't for me, unfortunately! On the bright side, the area where Vasamuseet is located is lovely! Start with a short film then tour the multiple levels to learn about the creation and eventual retrieval of this massive ship. What a fabulous museum. The ship is incredibly large and beautiful, quite breathtaking in the expansive modern museum space. If you have any questions about the Vasa, the free tour explains the history. There are 5 floors to the building so you can see the ship at a variety of levels. I particularly enjoyed the floor with the carved wooden busts that were recreations of the original ship decorations. Lots of murals, multimedia displays and miniature models to help let your imagination run wild. The gift shop was quite good and well priced. read more

Museums can be scattered or take a bunch of touring exhibits, but Vasamuseet is just about a boat. But because of the focus, it gets to delve into all of the different aspects of it. The politics of the time. The technologies that were available at the time. Maritime law. Why the boat sank. The process of finally getting it out of the harbor and into the museum. A giant ship in the middle of a building. Now normally I would be far more excited about something like this, however, all I heard was how awesome this was, and well. It wasn't. The best parts of the museum were the preservation sections where they showed what was done to find out how it originally appeared when it sailed. However, not being able to buy tickets in advance. If I don't get it, then I will be left with the feeling of a major loss of self worth and be a social pariah among my peers. I cannot bear the indignity of it all. The Vasa Museum has one item in it and it is a ship that was built incorrectly by the Swedes. The greatest museum to bad ship building in the world. Vasa (or Wasa) is a Swedish warship built 1626-1628. The ship foundered and sank after sailing less than a nautical mile into her maiden voyage on 10 August 1628. Vasa was built top-heavy and had insufficient ballast. Despite an obvious lack of stability in port, she was allowed to set sail and foundered only a few minutes after she first encountered a wind stronger than a breeze. She fell into obscurity after most of her valuable bronze cannons were salvaged in the 17th century. After she was located again in the late 1950s in a busy shipping lane just outside the Stockholm harbor, she was salvaged with a largely intact hull in 1961. She has been reconstructed where the wood just was too decayed to salvage, but this is about 80-90% original materials. It is huge. It is a museum that has had over 30 million visitors since they opened and since they charge about 20 USD per person, the Swedes seem to have finally made Vasa a success, but only on dry land. read more

This place should be the big embarrassment for Sweden, but instead, they turned it into a big beautiful museum instead. Maybe it's Swedish thing to be able to do this, but I thoroughly enjoyed my time at Vasa museum no matter the fact that the museum centers on only one piece - the 300-year old sunken ship that was salvaged in the 60s. The museum gives a really thorough view about what's on the ship (although you're not allowed to step into the ship, fair enough, it must be fragile after all these years in the ocean) and how the Swedish naval fared in the waters way back when and how sailors lived in general in that area. There was also "bildspel" where you could get to "watch" (or more hear) about the interrogation of what really happened to the ship that sunk just 600-meter off the harbour and killed 51 people. All in all, a very educational museum and absolutely a must-visit when in Stockholm read more

I feel like a culturally insensitive barbarian for saying this, but we found the Vasamuseet to be just ok.... It was interesting for a short visit, a single stop on a multiple museum tour; it was, however, a bit too much of a to-do over a single artifact, no matter how interesting / historically important / difficult it was to retrieve and reconstruct. We enjoyed the supporting exhibits giving historical context and enjoyed climbing up and down the stairs to check out the ship from different levels, but the museum as a whole just felt anticlimactic given the amount of hype surrounding it, and the anticipation that generated. (As a spoiled, bratty Manhattanite within walking distance of the American Museum of Natural History and the Metropolitan Museum of Art, I can't help but think that all this could've been covered in a single room at either museum.) Our favorite part of the museum was where we were able to try our hand at steering a ship, an exhibit that used computer graphics to show you how you're holding the course. My conclusion: It's a good thing I wasn't the Vasa's helmswoman. It would've sunk even faster. read more

Amazing. If you are in Stockholm and looking for a museum to visit, this is one you cannot miss. There is the actual ship that sunk outside in the waters back in 1628 and it was "lifted" and inserted in the museum. When you are inside, the sheer size of this ship will take your breath away. There are various levels that will show you eyelevel views from the outside and to what each deck served regarding purpose. In addition to the ship, there are other displays describing the various items and carvings from the internal and external portions of the ship. Too much information to divulge but this is one you don't want to miss. Easily accessible from the number 7 tram from Hamngatan/ Kungsträdgården station. Or, for those that have no problems walking, do what I did and just walk from Kungsträdgården street. The views along the waterfront and down to the Vasamuseet are too beautiful to miss while on the tram. Buy your tickets before hand and get there early as a line forms. read more

An absolutely must-visit if you are in Stockholm. This was the best part of my entire Scandinavian visit. The museum is so well laid out and the story they tell is amazing! I won't spoil the story, but you definitely have to go check it out for yourself! Every sign is in both Swedish and English, so for English speakers, they make it easy! We did the tour in late April, which is definitely shorter in the off-peak months. They give you a tour of a few major spots for maybe 30 minutes, and you do get an overview of the story. However, during the major tourist season in the summer, you get a full tour of all floors and many more in-depth details. Either way - worth the visit. I assume it's nicer in the off-peak months anyway because it's not too busy! read more

Most projects since 1628 fail for the same reasons: Specifications are obviously wrong, function should follow a pretty design instead of form following function. The project team is aware of that but the management forces them to reach a goal in unrealistic time and budget. Testing is inadequate. Fail. The project owner and management have some good excuses (e.g. a penalty of god himself), someone relatively uninvolved has to pay the bill. Visit this museum to explore the story of Vasa and the beginning of modern project management. Take one of the free guided tours starting from the entrance hall in serveral languages. So what is the museum got to offer made this place so popular? This is a maritime museum, it holds the warship Vasa has been salvaged, which the it was sank during 1628. Later on, the warship was found and rebuilds an movie in this museum. Well, Or I should say, they build a museum for this. I decided to check his place out, because I was interesting by the history and the thing I read about this place. Even the ticket of the museum wasn't that cheap, I still paid a visit to this place. When I first just walk in to the museum, the Warship was already there, and it was much bigger than I expected. I spent quite a long while here. The museum is quiet big, and really, almost the whole museum here was just about the ship. The history of it and things that related to it, the museum have total 6 floors. Each of them has their own purpose. I did saw some objects were repeated in different floor. Each floor gave me a different perspective from the ship, so I could check the it from almost every anger. On the top, they event offer some nice seats so visitor just could just enjoy the view in the cosy way. At the bottom of the museum, you can find some other collection and body of the old crews of the ship, it was interesting to read them. Before I left the museum, I also saw there is another for other exhibition, about thing happened in that timing. Of course there is a gift shop, quiet a big one actually, just give a look. There is so interesting stuff. And try the café/restaurant as well, really nice place to relax, the food there looks great as well. At the end I did manage to check out the whole museum, some of small area I just had a quick look, I think the museum is quite cool, quite interesting, fully of taste of history and the Warship Vasa looked great. It could be boring for some, because the museum it is just all about this ship. Maybe the theme of the museum will get a bit dull after being couple hours here. read more

This is absolutely a MUST SEE in Stockholm. If you can only go to one museum during your stay, I would say this is it! It is truly mind blowing and beyond cool. Upon entering, you are instantly overwhelmed by the size of the Vasa ship. You can explore all four floors and see different angles of the ship, learn about life on board, how it was built and all remaining artifacts. But this is more than just a history lesson. It really is a feel good story. This sunken ship was underwater for 300 years and was only salvaged in the 1960s and made into a museum years later. It's incredible to see how well this ship is preserved and to realize all the effort that goes into maintaining its glory. I would highly suggest watching the documentary on the ship. It is offered many times throughout the day in all different languages. read more

At first, I thought it was going to be boring because I am not a huge fan of going to museums however when I got there I really liked it. Children under 18 get in for free and students get discounts. For many swedes, this is an athemn to an embarassment... the big ship that sunk the very moment it was placed in water... I see it from another perspective as you can see they way it was removed from water... that takes good knowledge of engeneering! The place is a private museum so it's understandable that it is paid. I bit too paid but thats swedish price! There are a lot of possible translated brochures. As a translator, I can't really remember if the Pt version was any good. The building where the museum is located is quite modern but does not look odd in the surrounding area. It was well planned. It is a great way to see how ships were built in the past and the fact that most items were preserved helps to know what was onboard a vessel; what was needed. It's one of those places that you visit once and that's it! read more

This place, is something else. It's not a matter of whether you're a history buff, a proud Swede, a ship enthusiast or an active opponent of sea sickness. Guys, there is a 300-something year old giant wooden battle ship, completely preserved (give or take 2%) in it's original parts, sitting inside a huge building in the middle of Stockholm. Words that come to mind are: magic, impressive, holy shit, giant. It is unique in the world for it's kind, age, size and preservation. Short story: They built a battle ship, messed up in the early engineering process, said "screw it" and kept going, ship sank after 1500 meters on it's maiden voyage, was found 300 years later and have now been preserved. However, there is so much more to it. The museum is incredibly informative. You can learn about the everyday life from the time, the engineering faults and why, the amazing preservation process that is still ongoing and what impact it has had on other aspects of science, the symbolism of the artwork and how they borrowed wildly from all world religions, ways to intimidate the enemy, how battle was conducted at sea and check out some real life Game of Thrones weapons used to split skulls with. Basically, it is so much more than "just an old ship." I highly recommend it. You can sprint through the exhibit in less than an hour, but will probably spend longer time in there. read more

Dear Vasamuseet, I love the boat, super cool, but did anyone else wish that they had a way to see inside of it? I mean, if I had to stare at the outside of a massive ship for an hour this would definitely be the best place on planet earth to do it. I liked the items they had collected from the wreck and the historical facts on display. I just wish there was a way to go inside it! Don't you? Are we all on the same boat here or is it just me? Enjoyed this museum more than I thought I would! The ship itself is such an amazing thing up close, all the incredible details for something so old. The museum is very spacious inside. Every floor is filled with items and information regarding the ship/other things around that time period. Will not go into details so you can find out for yourself!
