I can understand why Vasamuseet is one of the top must-see tourist attractions in Stockholm. I was incredibly intrigued just from the detailed pictures of the ship and was even more amazed when I finally saw it in person. We arrived right before a 20-minute English-speaking tour was about to begin, so we decided to follow through and learned that this 17-century warship was not only built in two years with NO BLUEPRINT, but it was capsized unfortunately on the first day out on the waters and rediscovered centuries later in the 60s! Sure, you could see some of the newer pieces of wood patching up the missing pieces, but the fact that this humongous ship was preserved this perfectly was mind-blowing for me. Every single detail was carefully attended to, paying respect to different leaders and men who contributed to the war by having their faces beautifully sculpted on the visible parts of the ship. It was simply incredible to see such fine detail presented on a ship that was unfortunately not prepared to be used in the war (due to failure in balancing). The museum provides three different stories from where to take photos and observe the ship. Other parts of the museum presented some skeletal bodies that were recovered from underwater, as well as bits and pieces of weapons and raggedy clothing worn by the men on the ship. Other rooms showed miniature versions of the ship, as well as a movie which showed how prominent the women's roles were during those times when the men had to go to war and the women had to take over by working and making more independent decisions in the workforce and home. This museum was incredibly informative and it is definitely a must if you are interested in learning about Swedish history. The place gets crowded, so I would advise not doing what we did by going in the afternoon, and going in right when the place opens. It's nice to see other coffee shops and restaurants in the area which provide a nice break from tourist attractions if you need a stopping point. PARKING We were lucky enough to find free parking on one of the surrounding streets, but not that lucky when it began pouring rain out of nowhere. read more

The Vasa is a 17th Century warship which sunk back in 1628. I believe it had the shortest maiden voyage in history. Very impressive how they have worked to preserve this amazing piece of work. There are many exhibits which tell the story of the Vasa. Unfortunately, we did not have the time to truly appreciate what we saw. We were part of a tour group, and they only gave us about an hour to go through the museum. Not enough time. I highly recommend this museum as a stop when in Stockholm. When you first walk into the museum, the ship they have on display is extremely impressive. The sheer scale of it blows you away. There are plenty of things to go around and see, all relative to this ship. It isn't a viking ship, it is many centuries later, but still impressive. This museum is super impressive. When you walk in you just get blown away by this massive ship that has been so well restored. They have different levels to the museum, all in which surround the ship and allow for you to see it from different angles and perspectives. There are different sections throughout the museum that provide educational information about the period, like the type of food they had on board, how they dealt with sickness, etc. They also have a theater that will switch up the language in which it is playing in (there are also subtitles) which gives you a nice overview of the history and how they went about restoring the ship. Guided tours are available in both Swedish and English that last about 25-30 minutes. Storage lockers are available, as well as coatracks, as well as a cafe and plenty of areas to sit. read more

The Vasa Museum is an amazing attraction. If you're in Stockholm, it is definitely not something to be missed. The Vasa sank on its maiden voyage in 1628 & lay at the bottom of the Stockholm Harbor until it was resurrected 333 years later, in 1961. It has since undergone an extensive preservation process & the original ship is now displayed at the Vasamuseet in downtown Stockholm. Yep, one boat, no sails, slightly used. In addition to the Vasa ship displayed in the center of the museum, there are numerous other exhibits, such as the salvaging & preservation process, ship building, life on board & the skeletons of some of the victims to name a few. There was a lot to see & it was all very fascinating. Definitely worth the price of admission. There is also a short film about the Vasa that is played every half hour in various languages. However, English speakers can catch any film & read the English subtitles. There are vantage points from six different levels that range from the ship's keel to the top of the stern castle. Save time gaining entrance by using a credit card at the self-serve ticket machine. The museum also has a restaurant with delicious food & BEER. However, it's closed by 4pm. Ever notice we never celebrate successful ships? The Vasa was the Titanic of its day, BUT, its conservation is the real story that makes this ship and museum so unique. In 1628, the Vasa was built as the ultimate Swedish war machine in their battles with Poland. Loaded with big cannon, this massive sailing ship was supposed to be the King's ace up his sleeve. Built by "dead reckoning," without plans, it had design defects that caused it to sink at the edge of the harbor on its maiden voyage. Many died. It was preserved by clay on the ocean bed, brackish water that doesn't allow for wormwood pests, and, amazingly pollution. The story of how it was salvaged, so in-tact that it was REFLOATED and towed to the museum site, and how the wood that had spent centuries on the ocean floor was preserved, is part of a bunch of amazing exhibits and new reconstructions of the people and the events around the ship at one of the coolest nautical museums in the world. Liked the size of the 400 year old main artifact of an era when Sweden was a warring power - 200 feet long, 180 feet tall, 30 feet wide, roughly. So much terrible waste from that approach - war to resolve disputes - was easy to sense. Also it was easy to admire the skill and dedication of the shipbuilders, sculptures, artists and craftspeople able to turn out a gaudy top of the line warship in 2 years. US has not been able to do a large warship in 2 years since say 1942-45. Sorry to say, the museum seems to be not clear about who financed the raising of the ship and the building and development of the museum. That would be interesting to know. The museum, as it is now, is world-class and the curators could not have been more helpful in bringing home what life must have been like on and around a Swedish warship in 1628. Thankfully, museum was not too crowded on a warm Monday afternoon in August. Concierge could not have been helpful with a map and directions to the AirBnB after my phone died. She even offered to charge my phone a bit as the museum was closing. read more

Before we visited Vasamuseet (Vasa Museum), I was skeptical of how interesting this maritime museum would be. It's an old boat... who cares? I'm glad I read the reviews and changed my mind 'cause I was wrong! The Vasa is truly an impressive 17th century ship, both in size and craftsmanship, and has been preserved and restored to a terrific condition. Vasa sank on her maiden voyage in 1628, but the sinking wasn't a complete waste. Because of the failure, the Swedish figured out what went wrong in the engineering process, and built a second version that didn't sink. Opened in 1990, the Vasa Museum displays the almost fully in-tact 64-gun warship in the main hall, which can be seen from six levels (from the keel to the very top of the stern castle). There are various exhibits and models around the main hall portraying the construction, sinking, location, recovery of the ship, and related to the archaeological findings of the ships and early 17th century Sweden. Most of the ship's parts are original, however certain parts that were missing or heavily damaged were replaced, such as its three masts, a new bowsprit, and rigging. I was impressed by the Vasamuseet. It is one of the most visited places in Sweden and well worth it. Come here during the weekdays if you have a chance since the weekends get really packed. See if you can get the tour and also watch the movie. They normally list the guided tour times on the screens by the entrance. These guided tours can be in English or Swedish. The museum has several levels, so give your self enough time to explore all the exhibits. At a minimum, give yourself at least 2 hours for the tour, it is well worth it! read more

The line was kind of long but it moved pretty quickly. There's a side to buy tickets at a kiosk or if you have cash at a clerk. Both move pretty quickly. The first thing you see as you walk in is the ship and it looks incredible. There are multiple floors and plenty of stairs despite the crowds. It seems to be expanding as they discover more things. Not too much for kids but they seem to enjoy the museum as much as the adults. We didn't take very long to go through everything. Might take longer for a family. Having cycled past the Vasa Museum the day before, I knew I had to return to take in this obvious Djurgarden highlight, so when I woke up to heavy rain, it was first on my list of the various indoor attractions to be found in Stockholm. To say that it was a majestic and awe-inspiring museum would be a cliché, but it's a richly deserved review for this wonderful place, dominated by the incredible size of the recovered ship and well accompanied by excellent static and interactive displays that tell it's story so well. I'd arrived an hour before the opening time, thanks to an error in the guidebook, so I'd taken cover outside along with more than a few others, cowering in the wind and rain. We were all delighted when the staff took pity on us and opened the doors a good few minutes before the advertised time - that was a lovely gesture and we were swiftly inside and drip-drying our way to the ticket office. One major advantage of arriving so early was the opportunity to take pictures without obstructions, so I decided to scoot straight on up to the top floor for the viewing gallery that looks upon the stern. That was quite a sight, with the beautifully restored wooden carvings staring back at me across the centuries. Once I'd taken all my pictures, I then took a leisurely descent through all the floors, going against the tide of an ever-increasing number of coach parties who were flooding in, out of the Stockholm drizzle. Each floor told a different aspect of the story of The Vasa, from the foolhardy king and the harassed shipbuilders who rushed it through to meet a spurious deadline, to the somewhat gruesome reconstructions of the victims from their remains, right through to the amazingly detailed summary of the recovery process itself - an expression of national will, against all the odds, to raise the ship from the depths. The uniquely brackish nature of the Stockholm waters made this experience possible, but the incredible effort involved in telling the story of the Vasa is inspirational in so many ways. A mesmerising couple of hours, covering more than 450 years of maritime history in half a morning. read more

This museum houses an ill fated 17th century warship that was dredged from the floor of the sea in 1961 and fully restored. The magnitude of this thing will have you gazing in wonder and the stories that surround it and the people who were involved back then and in the restoration tell such a fascinating story . Be sure to watch the 19 minute video and to go all the way up and all the way down to see the scale of this ship. Also interesting are the salvaged skeletons and some of e real life ship models. Okay, maybe I'm not the person to judge this attraction but I didn't think it was worth my time nor the money I spent here. I usually like museums, and love spending time in special places like this but here goes my experience so you can have your own opinion about it. Take a tram to Djursgården, which is beautiful by the way. The island has other museums and places worth seeing as well. To get in, if you are not a student you will pay over 120 SEK to go and see a ship, that ok is ancient, from the viking times and etc but still the whole thing sank in 47 minutes - I don't know why Swedes are so obsessed about it. We took the free guided tour and the lady was great, well-spoken, perfect English and told us many interesting stories - this was actually my favorite part of the whole museum visit. The ship is enormous and I can only imagine how long it took to be built around that time, but you are not allowed in (and I agree with that). They reconstructed all the faces from the few skeletons they found around the sinked ship, which is also interesting (specially if you think all Swedes and vikings are tall and strong like you see in movies). With that said I had a much better time at the Historiska museum, and learned much more about Sweden and the vikings in general. read more

It was later pulled from the water years later, in the 1960s. The museum opened in 1990 and remains one of the most visited museums in Scandinavia. The museum has several floors, allowing guests to take in the full size of the ship. There are displays filled with various items recovered from the ship, including kitchenware of jewelry. There are several theaters at the museum, including a continuous film about the history of the Vasa and how the museum came to be. I highly recommend watching the film before fully exploring the museum, as the film puts a lot of things into context and perspective. The film lasts approximately 10 to 15 minutes. Even if you aren't a history buff, you will enjoy this. My wife, who definitely isn't was mesmerized. My only disappointment was that you don't actually go in the ship. But once you look at the preservation process etc it makes sense that you don't. We'd destroy it. There are multiple stories of cool displays and information including a heat scanner that shows you where the most heat is emanating from your body. Tips- If it is a hot day, save this one for the mid afternoon as they keep it very cool in there to help with the preservation. If you have the Stockholm pass, in this same area you can go to the aquarium, the nordic museum, the spirits museum, and the Skansen open air museum. This will be a full day even if you are a mad rusher like me, but they are all within reasonable walking distance of each other if you are able bodied and like walking. I would save the most time for Vasa and Skansen. read more

If you are going to Stockholm I would say the Vasa Ship should definitely be on your list! This was a great museum. It was interesting and informative. The admission price was reasonable. There are guided tours in multiple languages. The signs and information on the displays are in both Swedish and English. Staff was friendly and helpful. The setup and where to start to view everything was a bit confusing so I would suggest a tour if you have time. There is a great cafe inside as well if you are looking for a snack or a bite to eat. If you are looking to go here my suggestion is to take the train int Gamla Stan(Old Town) and take the ferry across to the island. It's a nice way to also see the city and a nice ride. read more

If you go to Stockholm and don't visit the Vasa Museum, can you really say that you've been to Stockholm? You may as well do it, since you'll hear about it from everyone else all week any time you take any other tour. Our theory is that it was such a large percentage of the country's GDP at the time that they're still working to pay it off by encouraging all the tourists to go! Seriously though, if you like history and science, it's a pretty interesting museum. The history section makes it pretty clear that the engineering was bad but that no one wanted to tell the king. The on-ship deck talks about what life would've been like on such a warship. The upper portions offer stunning views, and make it obvious that this was never going to stay upright. The lower floor shows the forensic science in the identification of the bodies and the preservation science ongoing today to account for the weight of the wood pressing down on itself over time. It was a bit repetitive, but if you're only going to one museum while in town, I'd recommend this one. read more

So, on the one hand, this museum is basically saying, "Here's an entire building dedicated to our most catastrophic naval accident." Kind of awkward. On the other hand, this is a fantastic look at a style of naval ship that many had believed to be lost. Once you buy your ticket and walk in, you are immediately greeted by the massive warship. Surrounding the ship's port side are various artifacts recovered by the ship's excavation team. Other exhibits describe the massive recovery process involved in removing the ship from the sea. All along the side of the ship, you could see the remarkable amount that the ship was preserved. Through the cannon ports, you could observe workers attempting the remarkable task of continuing the ship's preservation. Also on the port side was a theater playing a short film detailing the Vasa's history. Various design flaws worked together to ensure the ship's capsizing and eventual sinking. A tragedy, as the ships presents an impressive figure. Vasamuseet is centrally located in Stockholm's tourist area, with Skansen, the theme park and Absolut museum all located nearby, and it's easily accessible by foot, car or passenger boat. Anyone with an interest in naval history would do well to visit this one of a kind museum. read more

Fortunately for us it sank it a perfect location thus preserving the ship for over 300 years until it was rescued in the 1960's and rebuilt with 98 percent of it's original material. It's the only ship of it's time that is original. When you first walk in you are surprised by the sheer size of the ship. There are several floors to view the ship at different angles and lots of information about the ship and the early 1600's. If you have time the museum does a very thorough explanation of the sinking, salvage, restoration and current maintenance so you could spend at least 2 hours there. They also have free tours in several languages and a nice gift shop. read more

In short a ship sinks on its maiden voyage a long time ago. It stays underwater for 300+/- years. Fast forward to the 1950-ish, it discovered in the 20s and the process of excavation begins and the restoration continues to this day. I'm not great on history so if you want those details check out the review of Angela F & Donna B. The ship is now housed in a museum -- I do believe that the building was built around the ship. There was 4 floors that allow you to get close to the ship on all levels. Tons of history via text, audio and video. What blew me away - They were able to reconstruct the mast. Most were bits and pieces but there was one large sail that was 94% original - WOW! Details and recreation of the crew based on teeth found was both cool and creepy. You can chat with the restorators as they are working. The VASA only voyage may have lasted only 4 hours but the history is still being discovered to this day. read more

Awesome attraction in Stockholm is a must if you're planning on coming to Sweden. Showcasing the grand Viking ship that never got to set sail. The whole museum is seven floors so you really get to see the entire ship as well as exhibits on the construction and the people who built it and perished when it sank.
