What an amazing experience. I was so looking forward to visiting Vasa prior to getting to Stockholm and it didn't disappoint. What an amazing place to visit. An almost 400 yr old boat 95% intact. The museum itself is keep climate controlled to maintain the temp and humidity. The workers couldn't have been more accommodating. There's an 18 movie you can watch ahead of time that gives you some history of the Vasa. The museum is very clean and loaded with artifacts. A truly great experience.
This place was highly recommended in the Eick Steves Scandanavia guide. He was right - thoroughly enjoyed this museum where a 17th century warship is the star attraction. Took a free 25 minute tour - very useful for explaining the history behind the ship and its unfortunate sinking - the Titanic of Sweden. The ship itself is breathtaking! Lovingly restored and hopefully they can keep it around for posterity. There's a nice film to watch that provides additional background. Great multi floor exhibits and viewing platforms for the Vasa. Highly recommend!!!
Astonishing. Seeing a 17th century ship is astonishing, let alone one which was intended to be amongst the biggest and best. This museum is world-class; design and displays are fascinating and add to experience. Every one deserves at lease a glance. BONUS nice cafe! TIP there's an audio-visual experience recounting a post-disaster inquest which adds a lot to your understanding of why Vasa could've sunk TIP consider riding a ferry; we rode 82 to Slussen.
This was a fabulous museum and one of the highlights during our recent travels to Scandinavia. We arrived before opening and waited outside looking at the Vasa's masts mounted on top of the museum. The replicas were meant to convey just how crazy tall this ship was and I certainly wouldn't be one to work at the top of the rigging! Once inside, we showed our Stockholm Pass QR codes and received a ticket to enter in the museum. Very quick. Once inside, the Vasa just towers over you. It was an amazingly preserved warship that has to be seen in person. We took the first tour of the day and enjoyed the stories and history the guide conveyed to us. Well worth it to get these insights before wandering on each floor to see more up close. Other exhibits included the fateful day of the Vasa sinking, life on board, and more of the artifacts recovered including the sails. Overall we spent two hours here and enjoyed all of it.
The Vasa Museum is a can't miss experience when you are in Stockholm. It's a 10-star experience on a five-point scale. The story of the Vasa, a huge Viking Ship starts in the 1600's. It was built from 1626 and 1628. On August 10, 1628 it set sail for the very first time. After sailing for 1400 yards, it tipped over and sunk. The ship was discovered in the 1950's and was surfaced 1961. The one lucky thing about the Vasa was that it sank in one of the few ocean environments that would have completely dissolved the ship. The Vasa sank in the Baltic Sea's cold, low-salinity, and oxygen-poor water, which prevented wood-eating shipworms from infesting the ship. This was due to it sinking close to Stockholm where the ocean meets fresh water. After being salvaged, it was preserved through a 17-year process of spraying the wood with a water-soluble wax called polyethylene glycol (PEG) to prevent it from drying out and cracking, and the ship is now in a climate-controlled environment. Although the wood was preserved, much of the iron which held it together rusted, so the restoration took decades. Because of the fact that it was salvaged in tack at a time when the knowledge and technology existed to preserve and restore the ship, it is like a time travel back to the 1600's. Although the museum opened in 1990, there was still decades of more restoration, it is now ready for prime time. The museum includes the restored ship (which is HUGE), models of what it looked like originally (all of the wood carvings were brightly colored), a full scale model of the front of the ship that you can walk through, the original clothes and artifacts that were found intact on the ship, and multiple exhibits. Why did the ship sink in the first place? The king insisted that an additional level be added to the original design, making it obviously top heavy. However, back in the 1600's to disagree with the King meant instant death, so even though the architects knew it couldn't stay afloat, no told the king, Gustavus Adolphus.
The Vasa Museum is built around a 17th-century warship that sank on its maiden voyage and was salvaged centuries later. Seeing it up close is striking, detailed, and well-preserved. The exhibits are clear and engaging, with just the right amount of context. Perfect for a rainy day. It was very crowded when we left, so reserve tickets ahead if you can. Overall, definitely worth the visit if you're in Stockholm.
This was one of the most interesting museums I've ever been to. My initial thought was, how much content could there be for a museum about just one boat? Well tons! They found a way to highlight so many aspects of this ship's short journey. The museum touches on the passengers, the construction, the history and the unfortunate fate of the ship's maiden voyage among many other aspects. This museum is well worth your time.
They have a giant ship here Still quite a lot to see. I recommend looking at the short video in the theater room. A lot of the things here are the ship art and relics. Just like the museum next door contains a lot of reading.
I almost did not go to the Vasa museum, because it was a long walk from the hotel and how interesting can an old ship be? I bought a ticket in advance to try and avoid a long line. The timed ticket entry says 10:00 am when the museum opens, but in the museum FAQ, you can show up any time and we got there around 11:00 am and it was fine. However there was only one line to enter, so buying a ticket (and printing it) ahead of time just allowed them to scan my tickets and enter, but we were still in the same line as the people buying tickets. Fortunately, it was a short line that went quickly. I just didn't want to walk all the way and find that we could not get in the museum since it was sold out or at capacity, but this was April/non-peak time on a Saturday, and it was fine. When you enter the dark museum and see the old ship towering above you, it is definitely impressive with the height and intricate wood carvings. See when the next introduction movie plays in your language of choice to watch first and grab a brochure in your language. The signs are also in English which was really nice. Some people rented audio guides, but we just read the placards. The movie explains what was happening in Sweden when the ship was created and how the King wanted an extra row / a third of cannons on the Vasa ship. A few days later we were in Copenhagen and saw a Danish model ship with three rows/ levels of cannons, so I can see why the King in Sweden wanted a third level. We were in the museum for around 3.5 hours, so yes, an old ship and its engineering and recovery, seeing a painted replica of what the carvings looked like, artifacts and skeletons recovered, getting insight into life was like as a sailor or officer, the technology used to restore the ship, and the cool Infrared light which showed you and your heat you are emitting all made for a very interesting and enjoyable day. There are bathrooms and a nice cafe with healthier than American food choices plus pastries. I think you could have a nice lunch at the cafe, but we just had our Fika/coffee break to keep us going. Other than the cafe, there was not a lot of chairs to rest your feet or if you are mobility impaired. Downstairs was an amphitheater seating area where I rested up after being there 3 hours. There were several floors to the museum which was great in it allowed you to get closer to the ship to see the detail. I am assuming there was an elevator somewhere, but just know there are stairs with plenty to see on each level.
Absolutely cannot miss. One of the most fascinating museums I have ever visited. It brings history to life in a way I didn't know possible. Get there early to avoid lines and it's actually easier to buy tickets day of.
Spectacular preservation of the Vasa ship and the history. Definitely worth the visit if you're in Stockholm. You got to see this in person!
So much history, lots to see in this museum, it is more than just a warship that tragically drowned. They show a short film in 17mins intervals so check the times and languages before visiting. We got lucky we arrived just in time for the English version, and learned a lot about the making of the ship.
What a beautiful museum. So much history and a fun experience overall. I couldn't take my eyes off this beautiful ship. I enjoyed the video they offer in so many languages so everyone can enjoy. A must see.

6 years later and Yelp prompted me to finish the below review. A colleague of mine described this as "an exhibit of Sweden's greatest military failure." The Vasa was commissioned back in the 17th century by Sweden's king for a war against Poland, but never made it out to sea. Instead, it fell victim to wind and poor design, sinking to the bottom of one of Stockholm's rivers. Despite that, the ship was recovered in the 20th century in well-preserved condition, allowing tourists like myself to admire the many fine details of renaissance shipbuilding. It was remarkable to see this craftsmanship up close and personal and also appreciate such a monumental part of the country's history. read more

I expected to see a restored Viking ship, but was surprised to see this giant from the 1600's when we walked in. Could have done better research before my trip. However this museum and the whole Vasa preservation story was fascinating. It was well worth a visit and highly recommended for visitors to Stockholm. read more

During my long weekend in Stockholm, I made a point to visit the highly-rated Vasa Museum. Although my interests are not necessarily nautical, it's the history that catches my attention. In 1628, the Vasa warship went on its maiden voyage and sank 1,400 yards later, but recovered in 1961. Apparently, using math to build ships wasn't a thing back then and the ship's narrow, but top-heavy design was unable to withstand a gust of wind which caused the ship to fall on its side and take in water causing the ship to sink. Fortunately, the brackish water in the Baltic preserved the boat and its contents for people to study and learn about over 300 years later. Seeing the recovered items in such great condition for its age gives you lots of insight into what 17th century Sweden was like. For example, some coins were round, while others were square. Having repair kits for clothes and shoes were common. Recovered skeletal remains still clothed and shod was one of the more fascinating displays. By analyzing the bones and teeth, researchers have been able to determine what the person's life was like: periods of poor nutrition during childhood, improperly healed fractures, a hard life of heavy lifting, a diet that lacked meat protein, or a diet that ground their teeth down, or a fish diet, etc. In general, Swedes are tall, but these skeletons indicated that the tallest people were around 5'5" most likely due to poor nutrition. In addition to signs in English, there was an informative video about the recovery and preservation of the Vasa in many languages. Complimentary tours are also in multiple languages. The entrance fee is around $15/person and bathrooms are co-ed which is unusual for Americans, but hey, we're not in Kansas anymore, Toto. read more

I wasn't expecting to enjoy the Vasamuseet as much as I did. Okay, cool, it's an excavated 17th century boat; big whoop! See it, take a few pictures, depart. However, the museum blew away those expectations with its thorough, detailed, and very elucidating exhibits. There's multiple floors and exhibits within the museum that explain more about the boat: not just its technical specifications, but also its history and the history of the boat's passengers/crew. I appreciated an exhibit that talked not just about the men, but also the women you'd find on boat, and how integral a part in Scandinavian culture women were at that time. There was a section that recreated the underside of the ship that you could walk through; my neck cramped a bit from the tight quarters, but I imagine that's just how the tall, broad shouldered crew felt all those centuries ago! Getting to see the artistic influences that the shipmakers had, as well as recreations of the figures on the sides of the ship was very cool. TLDR; come for the big boat, and stay for the deep dives into live in the 17th century! read more

One can't go to Stockholm without taking their little boy to see the great big awesome viking ship..so I took that little boy, who happens to be a full grown man in his 30s, to see the big bad viking ship and the husband was so so happy. I thought we'd pop by, check out the ship and move along, but I was wrong. The husband had to take all the pictures from all the different levels, read about the history and life of the sailors, and of course play the kid games where you row the ship across the screen..whatever makes the man happy right guys? If only there had been a food court with grilled cheese I think he would have been the happiest kid there. The viking ship was actually massively impressive. It was much much larger than I expected and truly you cannot capture its dramatic size in photos. The intricacy of the embellishments on the sides and the symbolism of the designs were fascinating. The three stories could probably occupy a family for a solid day. We were there for several hours and had a good time. Definitely not to be missed. read more
This entire museum is only about one ship, but I don't think I've ever been so interested in the history of a ship before. The bottom level explains how the ship is preserved which I personally found to be the most fascinating. There was a lot of engineering involved, which interests me as a fellow engineer. You also get the best perspective of the ship in terms of how large it is. Staring up from the bottom of the hull really helped me understand the sheer size of the ship. The other levels were more about the history of the ship itself, which gives good insight into Danish life in the 1600s. It's one of a kind and the best preserved ship from that era. read more

Well. You have to go to the Vasa Museum if you're visiting Stockholm. And go as early as you can so you beat the crowds because every other visitor will be there as well. But don't let Vasa eat your brain -- or your day. Unless you are a naval architect, 60-90 minutes are plenty. And speaking of naval architects, the 17th century bureaucrats, sycophants and pettifoggers covered up all responsibility for spending a fortune on a poorly designed ship which sank in Stockholm harbor 1400 yards into its maiden voyage. Architects even found two different kinds or rulers in the wreck -- a Swedish ruler which had 12 inches and an Amsterdam ruler with 10. Turns out half the ship was built with one, half with the other. But no one had the nerve to tell King Gustavus Adolphus that they had screwed up and the ship was fatally flawed. In my opinion the Vasamuseet is of interest to those with an interest in European History or all things maritime. I fall in that category so while in Stockholm, I visited. With a Stockholm pass the entrance fee is waved. For other visitors the fee is 150 Kroner or about $16 USD. Transportation is easy with three major options. 1) bus 67, 68 or 70, Hop-ON-Hop-OFF. 2) Tram 7 or 3) Boat Hop-ON-Hop-OFF. There are a lot of cruise ship tours to Vasa as well. The Vasa itself is on display and is the centerpiece of the museum. Completed in 1626, it sank only 1300 meters from port due to design error. It was brought to surface 1961 laying under the surface for 333 years.. Chief blame for the ship's sinking is attributed to King Gustav II for ordering such heavy calibre cannons for the ship;s dimensions and Henrik Hybertsson for his inexperience at constructing two gun deck ships. The ship simply sank when the lower cannon ports let in water. The Exhibitions focus on three areas: 1) life on board with historic artifacts 2) how the ship was Salvaged and 3) the preservation process. Other exhibitions include: tools, decorative pieces, personal belongings and forensic restorations of the people on board which are quite breath taking. read more
We easily spent two hours here. This was unbelievably amazing. The Vasamuseet is a maritime museum on the island of Djurgården. It houses the only almost fully intact 17th century ship that has ever been salvaged. This incredible ship with its 64 cannons, sank on her maiden voyage in 1628. The Vasa Museum opened in 1990 and displays the 98% original preserved ship. I highly recommend after you walk in and are greeted by this magnificent ship, you go to the right to the theater. Watch the historically accurate movie on the building of the Vasa, the tragic sinking, the amazing raising and the on going preservation of the ship. Now take your time and wander the four floors of artifacts - there is so much to check out. Also get up to just a few feet from each layer of the ship. From the very bottom to almost the top you can see every square inch and be in awe. Learn how they recreated paint colors and talk to students as they still work on documenting this discovery. A much do for under $20 when in Stockholm. read more
The Vasa Museum is a must-see when visiting Stockholm, Sweden. It is amazing that a ship could be exhumed from the Baltic Sea almost intact over 300 years after it sunk on its maiden voyage. The story in itself is fantastic and to see this vessel almost in pristine condition from the 17th century, is definitely the price of admission. We are not big fans of museums, so this was the only one we went to in Stockholm. It was part of the Stockholm Pass, so we didn't have to pay extra. While I don't like most museums, I really enjoyed this one. The coolest part was definitely that they had the real Vasa ship on display. It was massive and incredibly gorgeous. Seeing the architecture in person was awesome. You could go to different floors to get different views of the ship. They also had a lot of good exhibits to learn about the history of the ship. I think this is a must see while you're in Stockholm. Is one of the best museums I've ever been to and I would highly recommend it! read more

If you do one thing in Stockholm - go to the Vasa Museum. Swedish top-heavy warship that sunk on its maiden voyage. Recovered in the 60s and continuously being restored. Plan to spend at least 3 hours here. Opens at 10am before June 1st and 8:30am throughout the summer. read more

Wow, I'm superbly impressed by the Vasa! Epic fail to launch, but the majestic ship made history by being conserved and the largest in the world to be up for public display! The ship was probably in it for something greater and the country just didn't know about it back then! It is massive and the details on the carvings, are phenomenal. It probably took a craftsman a whole day or more to finish one carving on one of many sections! Must visit when in Stockholm! There are no other ancient ship that competes with this one! read more
We almost made the mistake of skipping the Vasamuseet (too many activities planned over a weekend in Stockholm!) but I'm so happy we made it here. We took a boat cruise around the many islands in Sweden and our guide pointed EXACTLY where the Vasa sank on her maiden voyage. How could we not check it out? The sheer size of this well preserved ship is astounding. It's 160 ft tall, 69 m long with 64 gun rooms housing ton-heavy cannons. What does that mean to you? nothing really except the fact that King Gustav Adolf was a proud man and wanted to build the baddest ship to go to war with Poland. Ironies: - The ship was built by Swedish AND Polish men. - The oak that was used to build the ship came from Sweden's and Poland's forests. - The tour lasts 26 mins long, which is exactly as long as Vasa's voyage on sea before she sank to the bottom of Saltsjön. When they hoisted Vasa up from the water, it was like putting together a 14,000-piece jigsaw puzzle. Salvaged objects from the ship, including shoes, cannonballs and utensils, provide a vivid glimpse into the lives of 17th-century sailors. The museum is open 7 days a week with extended hours during the summer and easily reached by tram. From the city centre (by Sergels torg square, on Hamngatan street) take tram number 7 towards Waldemarsudde. read more
You could have knocked me over with a Swedish paper towel, single ply, when I discovered that this seafaring museum ranked #9 on TripAdvisor's Top Museums of the World list. Believe it or not, that places it just below the Louvre and the Hermitage and right above the British Museum, the Accademia, and the Smithsonian. Say what? Yeah, you read that right, but forgive me if I beg to differ. Now don't get me wrong, it's quite a unique niche museum, but it really has just one subject, a 17th-century, 64-gun warship. Yep, one boat, no sails, slightly used. It was salvaged intact even though it didn't make it through its maiden voyage in 1628. It's not as if Christopher Columbus captained the boat to the New World or it was even steered by Capt. Merrill Stubing in his white shorts. Love, exciting and new... Built in 1990, it's located on the island of Djurgården right behind the cathedral-like Nordic Museum and very close by ABBA: The Museum (review: http://bit.ly/1Pt74N4), which frankly should have been a finalist on TripAdvisor's museum list, OK, maybe not unless you are a dancing queen, only seventeen, oh yeah. The main hall contains the ship itself (photo: http://bit.ly/1S4T63H) and related archaeological findings. While you can't climb on board, there are vantage points from six different levels that range from the ship's keel to the top of the stern castle. Surrounding the ship are several artifacts, including a model replica (photo: http://bit.ly/1UiWRHq) and exhibits which showcase the original construction, sinking, and eventual recovery of the ship. Vasamuseet is a very specific museum. It is dedicated to the history and viewing of a single Swedish ship of war completed in 1628. Ironically, that is the same year in which it sunk after only being afloat for a few minutes. It never fired a shot and nobody ever fired a shot at it. It merely sunk of its own accord due to being too top heavy and with portals located too low to the water line. You would think it would be a source of continued Swedish embarrassment but, the Swedes being Swedes hold it out as one of their finest historical artifacts and oddly enough to me, seem to take great pride in it. She was built in Stockholm under private contract, not by Swedes, but supposedly by Dutch naval builders. However according to the Dutch, built to Swedish specifications. The finger pointing went back and forth for some time, but in the end no one was held responsible. When you view the ship, which has been painstakingly preserved, you'll intuitively realize that the thing could never remain afloat. It just looks that awkward, too top heavy and out of proper naval proportions. The building in which it is housed was specifically designed and built as a museum for the Vasa. It's also one of Sweden's top attractions, so there are long, long lines waiting to get in to see it. In fact it is most ornate ship, having all sorts of carvings and woodwork that I've ever seen. My suggestion would be to join a tour group which groups are permitted to line jump rather than endure standing around for hours in order to get in. read more

The Vasa Museum is by far the most outstanding museum I visited on a recent trip thru Scandinavia. According to the museum guide the Vasa Museum has had over 25 million visitors and is far and away the most visited museum in all of Scandinavia. Upon entering the parking lot our tour guide noted that the real hot spot the could cause world war III was the parking lot for your buses, vans and taxis. Apparently some very heated arguments arise over parking due to the popularity of the museum. After entering the museum, it is so modern looking and there were over two hundred architects vied for the chance to have their designs chosen. It is a very interesting museum from the outside, but the most impressive, breathtaking first view of the Vasa is incredible. To consider that a warship of this size - 226 feet in length armament - 64 cannons - that launched in 1628, and sank less than an hour later, has been preserved and restored for all to see is way beyond any superlative I can come up with. Referred to by some of the workers as the world's largest jigsaw puzzle, it is again amazing that they claim to have 97 percent of the original pieces. The have over the course of 30 plus years figured out how to protect the original parts so they can be seen by future generations. The ship on its maiden voyage sailed about 1400 feet, fell over and sank. The bronze cannons were recovered and the rest was left to the sea. Luckily, as I understood the speaker, the mud was a low oxygen content so the ship was preserved. In the early 1960's recovery started and the results are now available for all to see. The question arises - What is so important about a ship with such poor engineering that it immediately sank? - Well I asked that question and was informed of a different point of view. Yes, the ship design is not one that will be used as the blueprint for a duplicate. The Vasa does give us pure insight into the building styles, and other construction techniques, that might have never been able to be examined with our eyes of today. I don't think it is much of a stretch to say that there are not many boats avail to examine that were built in 1628. This museum is a definite must see when you are in Stockholm. Don't miss this one. Oh yes, do your homework on the web prior to arrival to minimize the overwhelm when viewing this fabulous artifact in person. read more

If you are ever in Sweden one must go and see the history of that country so we ended up going to a museum named Vasamuseet. This museum is the history of one very gigantic ship that had sunk into the water. This museum is pretty dark inside but it holds so much information and history about the ship that you literally could spend the whole entire day inside if you were to read, take photos and just walk around. This museum has different levels and each one could be taken up or down by either an elevator or you could use the stairs. Don't miss any of the floors especially the one all the way at the bottom because that is where they keep the bones of some of the bodies that were in the ship. It's so interesting what you could tell from bones but I guess when they did find these bones some of them you were able to tell that they had a really hard life and they worked on the ship. This museum has an entrance fee but I believe it is really worth it and this boat is massive! Besides that part there are so many other things to look at such as what colours were used back in the day, the type of clothes that possibly were worn and how people actually dived under water. After you are all done there is one exit area and to the left of it there is a small shop of things that you could bring back home if you would like to remember that you actually came to this museum. Oh and don't worry this museum has english in it! So another bonus, I hate it when your in a museum and the thing is only in one language. Glad they did multiple languages here! An epically cool museum. A tale shrouded in mystery. And a whole lot of finger pointing. [1] I first visited the Vasa Museum in 1989 and it left a vivid impression on my teenage mind, so it was like visiting an old friend. We had an excellent guide who helped describe the history of this doomed ship and pointed out some of the best viewpoints. Then we had time to wander and explore at our leisure. The Vasa is a perfect example of how the best laid plans can go awry and a king's wish may not always be the most sensible course of action. However, this preserved ship is a beauty. After sinking in 1628 almost immediately after sailing (it made it roughly 1300 meters), it lay at the bottom of the harbor for hundreds of years until it was salvaged beginning in 1959. It has been preserved with chemicals which require that the lights be kept low to protect this glorious relic. At times, it feels like you are wandering around a tomb as you bump into a myriad of others (hopefully not any pickpockets). If museums are your thing, then this is such a great place to visit. It isn't just about the ship, but a look back at how life was lived at that place and time. Essentially a really interesting and thoroughly examined time capsule. And if you can time your visit to avoid peak hours/days, your experience will be even better. I loved exploring the nooks and crannies and the wood cuts showing the inner workings of the ship were gorgeous. A visit to the Vasa was certainly a highlight for my son. He would have loved to spend the better part of a day here. [1] No one was officially blamed, but it is likely a combination of factors. This museum was so cool to see and definitely one of the most memorable things I did in Stockholm! It was so cool because there is so much history, science and innovation behind the ship. I definitely learned a lot culturally and scientifically about Stockholm and the whole region from just visiting this ship! The ship was so well preserved and put back together so well it was amazing. You can see and feel the time and energy that was invested to bring it as close to its original form as possible. The prices weren't too bad either, it was pretty affordable and there was more to do here than I thought. You can view the ship from many languages, they have English guided tours, a short film, and a lot of exhibits that make learning about this historic ship fun, interesting and engaging! First, I am not normally big on visiting many museums when traveling except for major ones like seeing David in Florence, the Vatican, Smithsonian, etc. This is one of those must see stop. If you only can do one thing in Stockholm you have to see this ship. The size is surprising as well as the detail. This is such an amazing and beautiful ship from the early 1600's. I am still blown away days after seeing this. And to think it was under water over 300 years and totally restored and 98% original now. Truly amazing! So much to see with the details and information along the walls on each level. Don't skip the 15 minute movie about the ship and recovery. It answers so many of the questions you will have. Go see this history and just think of how they lived and died on ships like these. It's just a shame that this ship only lasted about 10 minutes into its maiden voyage. But if it had worked we make never had heard the term "German Engineered" it would have been Swedish Engineered. But with the sinking so quick, that was that. read more
This was the highlight of our trip to Sweden. We came with other travelers from the cruise ship so we were whisked right in. The museum is built around the life-size ship on 3 viewing levels which allows you to see the ship from the hull all the way to the top deck. It's huge and very awe inspiring, from the detailed carving in the wood to the iron work. I have never seen anything so grand and so up close! Along the way are numerous informational displays. The place never felt over-crowded which was great. Definitely recommended. read more

Who knew a museum dedicated to a ship that hardly got out of the dockyard before sinking could be so interesting. The ship is there along with a really interesting documentary about how they raised it, a section on women who worked on it and information on how it would have looked. This was a highlight of my trip to Stockholm & needs to be on your to do list. read more
I am not a naval expert and not super familiar with Swedish history, so I didn't think this place would really be my cup of tea. However, since it's the number one place to visit in Stockholm, I felt I had to give it a shot. Boy, I am glad I did! The boat was (I believe) 98% original, which is wild considering it was built in the 1600s. Additionally, it is MASSIVE. I knew it was large, but I wasn't prepared for it to take up the entirety of a multi-story museum. The history itself is fascinating and the intricate work is just lovely to look at. They also have a little video that details the history and recovery of the ship playing every 20 minutes or so in numerous different languages. I went alone and enjoyed every minute of it, and highly recommend to anyone visiting Stockholm. read more
Really interesting museum. The ship is amazing. So pretty. There are multiple floors so you can see the ship from many heights. It is a big place so didn't feel super crowded. A free tour in English happen to start right when we arrived. The museum is near a Viking museum, the Nordic museum, and the ABBA museum. read more

A visit to Stockholm won't be complete without a visit to Vasamuseet especially during the harsh winter months as it is a good couple of hours of indoor activities away from the cold. Vasa is well preserved as a wooden war vessel as it was built over 300 years ago. A lot of what you see here is the original ship itself. Though it is majestic but deal to poor design it was sunk during its maiden 2 km voyage. Great exhibit of the History of Sweden navy history and the life of sailors during the 17th century. Well narrated and interesting exhibits of the recovery and restorations of the Vasa itself. Well worth the price and time. And after Vasamuseet, you can visit Nordic Museum and Skansen (Open-Air Museum) which are both walking distance and after you all these visits, you will definitely have a much better understanding of Swedish culture and history. read more
If you are debating between visiting the Vasamuseet and the ABBA museum this is hands down your better choice! My sister and I visited Stockholm this spring and we debated heavily on what museums we would visit. I didn't think there would be THAT much to see at the Vasamuseet - I.was.wrong. It is truly an incredible ship to behold and bonus...there are free tours that give you the high points about the ship. So cool and very informative. Totally worth the cost of admission! read more
