So we went here for dinner at the recommendation of our travel agent. We had a reservation for right when they opened after a day of touring the Vatican and having a late lunch. Our first mistake was probably eating so soon after lunch as when we arrived we were not that hungry. I generally don't like posting bad reviews, but I felt the need to post this because my whole family agreed that this was the worst meal we have had in Rome. We've been here for 3 days now and up to this point, every meal has been fantastic, except this one.
For a restaurant that has 4.5 stars on Yelp, I would expect everything we order to be good to great and would also expect good service.
I'll start with the service because from the moment we walked in, you could tell that our waiter was unhappy that we were tourists. I explained to him that we couldn't read the menu (it was all in Italian) and his response to me was 'ok'. He offered up a couple of items on the menu, but didn't bother to explain what they were. So the meal didn't start off on a great note, being that I was ordering blind while trying to google the menu items, and our waiter didn't seem interested in making suggestions for us. One more knock I'll make on the service is I ordered meatballs and oxtail and was thinking of one last dish, so the waiter suggested a trio. He explained it was one of each of three meats and thinking nothing of it, I said ok. It turns out I already ordered the meatballs and oxtail which were two of the items on this dish. Why would it then be a good idea for me to order more of those things and only get one additional item in the beef roll (which tasted like a chewier version of the oxtail)? That made no sense, and when it arrived we just ended up with more of the same food instead of getting to try another dish that may not have been terrible. I'll take some of the fault for this, but a caring waiter wouldn't have suggested this item after paying attention to everything else we had already ordered, I honestly should knock of a star for this misstep and give this place 2 stars, but I feel that would be a bit too harsh.
On to the food. Again at a 4.5 star restaurant, I would not expect there to be any 'misses' or dishes that are just bad. I'll start with the bad and work my way up to the good, because there was certainly some good.
The Awful- octopus appetizer, never order this, just don't do it. It was really the worst thing I have eaten in any restaurant in a really long time. It was overly salty, the octopus tasted like rubber, and it seems like it was a day old ragu that they just reheated and served. It was flavorful, but full of bad flavors, pretty gross. We each tried a spoonful and then left the rest of it uneaten (uneaten food for an Asian family is unheard of and akin to blasphemy. For anyone who is Asian, they understand this). Think about this for a second, an Asian family not finishing a dish means it's close to inedible.
The OK items - porchetta (think pork pernil, but less good), the meatballs, the rice balls, the beef roll and the carbonara. These were all just ok, not bad, not great. Meatballs and rice balls were well made, so our lackluster opinion could have been a result of us not being that hungry, but they were not standout items compared to what else we have had in Rome. We ordered the normal amount we would get for dinner, but probably only had room for half of it, so some fault lays with us.
The Good to Great - the Oxtail and Risotto. The stewed oxtail fell off the bone and was delicious, could not have asked for a better meat dish, it was really good and one of the things our waiter recommended. It was spot on. The risotto was not a recommendation, but my dad likes his rice, so I got it for him. It was creamy, the right amount of al dente and not too salty. Very simple, but very good. This is what I would think of when I think local Italian fare, so we were very happy with this dish.
Given our experience I actually think 3 stars is generous. I am giving them an extra star because I think at least the food part of our experience had something to do with us not being that hungry. But I've gone to great restaurants before when not hungry and still ate a lot and had a wonderful experience. That didn't happen here, and overall I wouldn't recommend this restaurant to other tourists. Could just be a singular experience and I'm willing to take that into account, but this place was just not good for us tonight. read more
