It was overall so clean too with trash cans lining the neighborhood. There is so much foot traffic and car traffic here so that was a surprise! I really loved seeing the canned drive container too! Thanks to the Gemini community for opening their neighborhood to us all! My only suggestion would be portapotties but I'm sure that would be an added expense. Maybe if it was token driven to help offset costs?

My favorite was the house with the dog theme, they even had pup Christmas carols playing! Some residents also get involved as part of the experience. One was driving an old style classic truck with a Christmas tree and Santa in the trunk bed. Another was dressed as Santa riding around on a Segway wishing everyone a Merry Christmas. There were a few food vendors, from residents setting up a stand to sell cookies and hot cocoa to food trucks. We started right as the sun set and it was the perfect time as there was less crowd. Although some houses had not turn on their display at that time we were able to see it on the way back to the car. I find it much more enjoyable to walk than to drive. You get an up close view and can really appreciate the efforts that is put into it.

Something about the view that's a breath of fresh air especially when I'm leaving the L.A. area - that beautiful view of Camarillo and parts north is breathtaking. Even more beautiful are the certain times of the year when the landscape is green signaling a decent season of rain. When the shadows are long, even the earthy tones of summer and fall rage with beauty in their own way. Over the years I've seen the traffic gradually increase so it's rare I'll have a chance to coast downhill without having to touch my brakes. When it's busy, you have to stay alert, invariably there will be some wiseguy who brakes as if the world before him is ending and thus causes an extreme slow down that wasn't at all necessary. For me when I leave Ventura the drive home is just as beautiful. When I can sneak a peak at the farmland and the mini majestic mountains while driving up, I smile knowing they aren't going anywhere...I'll see them again soon.

Yelp Challenge 2015. 143/365…read more The Conejo Grade is a local 2.5 mile gem in the Conejo Valley that is a 7% grade that links Thousand Oaks to Camarillo in Ventura County. If you want to get to Ventura, Carprnteria, Santa Barbara this is your only option. There used to be a back road, that allowed you to bipass this traffic nightmare that took you from Newbury Park to Camarillo, but I believe that road shut down to thru traffic. The 118 also has a back way too, through Moorpark. So, Im not going to lie. Going down the grade is much better than trying to drive up the grade, cuz you can go fast. In fact you can travel fast enough to get a ticket. Going up a lot of cars do not have enough Ooooomph to get their loads up the hill. So plan to be sitting a while. And during the week its even worse with all the big rigs having to visit the weigh station and CHP office. Luckily all my cars have that extra punch, so Im not the one you will be honking at. Now going down, you may be lucky enough to spot the old Native American profile carved into the rock. Its huge. He will be on your left hand side. If you miss it, don't worry. There is plenty of beautiful scenery to entice your eyes. Lots of rocks, hills, vegetation and on a clear day you can see the ocean. But at night, you wont see anything, since its pitch black. Occasionally, you may see the ghost hitch hiker. Whatever you do, don't pick him up. If you do, the same thing happens everytime. He tells you a story, then disappears from your car. It's true. My brother told me years and years ago. Now, if your hungry your outta luck. Once you pass the Wendys and start going down, there is no food or gas for miles. Miles!! If your going up, the last good spot would be In and Out. So, be prepared. Fuel up the tank and the belly. The Conejo grade brings back memories of the hundreds of trips to the the VC beaches with my family. And all the trips I took with my grandmother to visit my Great Grandmothers house. Review #638

Now as I visit as a (dare I say..."Tourist") I get to enjoy the beach full time. Why is this one the best you ask? Well, it stretches out for about 50 feet before the water gets deep. This makes it perfect for kids who want to play in water but can't swim. Also the parking is only $2 per hour. And it's normally extremely chill here. Never too busy or crowded. The seafood restaurant is also really great and fresh! I love it here and if I was rich I'd buy a home across the street.

There are tons of beaches one can visit, but I had a list of certain ones to check out on this visit. We stayed at the military base for lodging, so this beach was only a few minutes in close proximity. They do have paid parking, just read the signs for payment. We parked on the street for free. There is a bathroom if needed, nothing fancy. We enjoyed the beach, it was crowed at all, which was a plus. There is a wide area to reach the beach, so be prepared to walk abit. I definitely would revisit if I'm in the area.

This year I decided to support and check out Growing Works nursery in Camarillo, CA. I've driven by this spot many a times and have been wanting to come in. This nursery is closed to the public expect to a few public days a month. This nursery which is ran through Turning Point Foundation is near and dear to my heart because of the kind of work I do and how they support women with mental health and employment needs. Coming here for Farm Fay was a blast! Not only could I support by buying their flowers and succulents in the back nursery area - they also had a vendor market where I was able to snag some candles and crochet goodies for a friend. All of the booths were local artisans and it was nice to be able to support them. There were a few food vendors so I grabbed a hotdog and listened to the live music. Weather was perfect, the vibes were friendly and cheery, it was absolutely the perfect way to spend my Saturday morning. Love that our county participates so actively in Farm Day and makes it such a big, awesome event throughout the county. I'll be an ongoing supporter and participant. That's for sure :)

We went to five farms. One grew celery and attendees could take home entire heads of celery picked just that morning. I'd never seen celery so big. They also had various vegetable seedlings. We also went to a flower farm and walked through the fields while learning about this worker owned business. My favorite was the Sa'aliyas Ranch at Pacific High School. This hands-on ranch provides students with an education in current organic agriculture practices. They had a cool drone that is used to spray plants. They also have an aquaponics building with koi in tanks (with windows so they can watch the people) to create the nutrients for the plants. A fun day, despite the rain.

The restaurant itself is beautiful. The décor is elegant, the dining room is inviting, and the table presentation creates the expectation of a high-end dining experience. Unfortunately, that is where the positives ended. Service throughout the evening was lacking. It appeared the restaurant was understaffed for the number of guests present. While the servers themselves were polite, the overall experience suffered because there simply were not enough staff members to adequately cover the dining room. Finished plates sat on our table long after we were done eating, and we eventually had to flag someone down to have them removed. My water glass was refilled only once during the entire meal, and after that I had to get my own water from the car. The food was even more disappointing. The lobster bisque was overwhelmingly salty and contained little, if any, noticeable lobster. The pasta was so heavily salted that it was difficult to eat. For dessert, the chocolate cake tasted like a standard store-bought cake rather than something that reflected the restaurant's pricing or presentation. The Manhattan has all the visual elements of an upscale dining experience, but the food and service fell far short of expectations. When a restaurant charges premium prices, guests should be able to expect attentive service and well-executed food. Unfortunately, neither was delivered during our visit.
