I am Cuban and I have my Spanish Birth Certificate as do my family members and many Cubans in my community. We are not "natives" to Cuba. Our grandparents went to Cuba the other day. We are Cuban born Spaniards. For example, if an Australian was born in Thailand, the Australian government will give the infant an Australian birth certificate. There's a lot of information to digest and it'll take hours to read through everything so plan according. If you go here, I highly going to the Grove Plantation afterwards.

You will notice that there is a painting of Richard Keith Call, young and old; and in both he has brunet features. But when they made the hand painted ambrotybe photograph, they gave him blond hair instead of giving him white hair, and it looks so out of place. The grounds are vast and delightful to take a stroll in. You will also find the plantation family's cemetery on the grounds. I highly recommend this museum, it'll take you right into the past. The staff are nice and hospitable. They will accommodate you by accompanying you to the basement if you are in a hurry and cannot participate in the walk-in tour.

Am I expecting too much in being able to fully read the names of the graves? I don't know. That being said, this is a good place to visit. You learn a lot about the history of Florida, particularly in terms of prior governmental staffing and their families. Oddly enough, too, I believe this was a plantation at some point. Definitely gives you perspective on how far we've come. Still, meh, I feel like I should've gotten more out of this. This is one of places that is just kind of there.

Big props to the city/county for closing down all related streets during the festival. It was great to have the freedom to walk up and down Park Ave. and other nearby streets. Live music, food trucks, you name it! LeMoyne Chain of Parks had fun for people of all ages. The incredible weather definitely amplified the experience, too. This is just another perfect example of what makes Tallahassee unique. And if you don't think so, then wake up!

Although it always ends up being way too hot, especially if you stay too long into the afternoon, and there is always a ton of people wandering about, the art cannot be diminished in any way! The selection and quality of the art for purchase were absolutely astounding, especially for what is only a small town festival at first glance. But it is even more enjoyable to chat with the artists themselves, who travel from all over the east coast, and hear the story behind each piece and what the work means to them. The festival is such a treat for every level of art appreciation and you should put it on your calendar to attend every spring!

I had this museum on my bucket list prior to visiting the city of Tallahassee because I figured it was a highlight I should check out while visiting the city. Born as a slave, John G Riley was an educator who began his teaching career in 1877. A prominent member of the African American community in Tallahassee. Along with his career in education, he served numerous organizations ranging from a board member of St James CME church, Grand High Priest of the Royal Arch Masons of Florida, Secretary of the Florida AACP, and a member the Negro Business League. Now as for the house, it was built in 1890 and is the last physical evidence of the thriving middle-class African American community that existed downtown. It was the home of the Riley family until 1973 when they sold it to the city of Tallahassee. The house was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1978 and was restored with joint funding from the city of Tallahassee and the Department of the Interior. In 1982, the Florida NAACP partnered with the Riley Foundation to purchase the house. And in 1995, a group of Tallahassee citizens established it as a museum dedicated to African American history and culture. If you are planning to visit the city of Tallahassee, I recommend including John G Riley Center & Museum in with your tour unless you just happen to stumble upon it as I did while downtown. ~ Keep moving Forward ~ Thomas G

Riley is a pillar of the Black Tallahassee community and an exemplar to the entire Tallahassee community. His vision drove him to lead Lincoln Academy (Tallahassee's first high school for African Americans) as principal from its onset in 1893 until his retirement in 1926. Today - the Riley Center serves as a beacon of historically relevant community functions, celebrations and activities. Check out rileymuseum.org. In fact, I just learned that there's the 18th annual Rock-A-Thon on December 2, 2017 which they're hosting. Save the date!

The Knott House Museum is a cute southern home that maintains a pieces of Tallahassee History. It…read morewas built in 1843 and was owned by many people during the years after. It is known as the Knott house because the last owners were William Knott and his wife Luella. William worked as the state treasurer during the times of the great depression. This house shows a lot of the items his wife collected and the kind of lifestyle they had back in the day. The museum gives daily tours and the day I came there were free mini versions. We were shown the downstairs floor of the house. It has old furniture that was brought throughout the country and though some of it does not completely match, the house looks cool. Poems were written to pair off with each item of furniture to give a little entertainment. All of the decorations and furniture are fragile and nothing is to be touched without cloth gloves. The staff is super friendly and welcoming. The house is decorated for the holidays and so it is ever changing style while maintaining its history. If you ever seem to wander around downtown Tallahassee or want to get some easy education then stop by the Knott House.
