It's not the sort of place you'd head for a weekend lunch but instead to quickly pick up something on your lunch break or post-workout. The cafe specialises in healthy, refined sugar free treats, salads and smoothies. They also offer coffee, although I would recommend sticking to the smoothies. The salads change daily but my favourite is the raw beetroot & carrot with some sort of vinagrette. It's pretty simple but delicious! Also, highly recommended are there cakes and slices. Their seed bar tastes just like a bumper bar only w/o the chocolate and all of the nasties. For me, Grind is the sort of cafe that I wouldn't go out of my way to go to but if I was in the area, i'd thank my lucky stars that it was there.

Got a piece of their vegetable frittata which was filled with egg, capscium, cheese with a chewy brown texture on the baked top and outer side crust with some side salad from their fridge cabinet. Their Citrus slaw is great with colourful purple cabbage and thin carrot pieces in addition to their leafy kale salad with crumbled feta and pinenuts. Definitely recommend the cool named boom chocolaka smoothie made from chocolate protein powder, oats, banana, peanut butter, maca and milk. Definitely good for you and so tasty- can't go wrong with chocolate with peanut butter. Was also filling what with its decent serving of the thick, creamy drink. Baked goods near the till if you want something to go. Otherwise a communal wooden table in the centre to sit down with health magazines and healthy recipe books to browse while you're waiting. Plenty of car parks out the front. Great find in this oddly placed industrial area and perfect for if you are a Club Physical gym member. Definitely hit it up for some refined sugar free, gluten free slices and other healthy treats if you're in the area.

I found it expensive enough paying for my own on my increasingly limited vacation budget, but the corn-based fritter I ordered, while largely inscrutable in composition, was nonetheless satisfying. I ordered some feijoa juice not knowing what it was (apparently it's South American, but New Zealanders seem to like it as I've seen it elsewhere), an intriguing concoction to be sure. If I were looking to eat something before visiting some of the remote beaches, I would want to stop here rather than taking a chance on finding something good elsewhere.

If you don't care about any of the detail, just know this: The Matcha Latte. Get it, sip it, savor it. Smooth and creamy and perfect and ahh, what dreams are made of. Tucked on the corner of New North and Ace place (the link to Dominion Rd), this garage-front cafe feels a bit 'off the beaten path' (but in the best way possible). The space is elegantly decorated with bright artwork & stylish cushions, with an inexplicable feeling of freshness. They make their own raw pressed juices and smoothies, with an impressive variety. From green detox through to cacao date handmade nut milk, the color of the rainbow is up for grabs. I tried the Aloha, a blend of pineapple, almond milk, cashews, tumeric and lemon. It was pretty f*cking delicious. This, alongside the Namaste bowl of spiced lentils, naan, veggies and avocado made for a super satisfying, balanced meal. They have a decent selection of raw desserts too - we split the raspberry lemon 'cheese' cake, which tasted like a healthier version of fudge - just as creamy but without a stomach ache afterward ;) No, it's not cheap, but I would say sliiiightly more reasonable with the other organic specialty spots in the neighborhood....slightly.

I'm often sort of snapped at with "our kitchen closed at 2" or something of that nature. Besides that I have to mention the incredible pies. Gourmet would be an understatement! They are fantastic and are often picked off the shelves quickly early in the day. I've also had the gluten free muesli from here but have to say I was disappointed with it overall as it was hugely expensive and came out looking a little sad. It tasted OK though I guess. My judgements may be completely wrong though because there are always people buzzing around here. It could be for the organic, gluten free food or it could be for the pies. I doubt it's for the service.

I've had a great sandwich there one time and another time an indifferent salad. I suppose the uncertainty of what sort of experience you're going to have keeps me coming back. They also have a big range of gluten-free options which seem to attract lots of diners.

Anyway, this week I set out to rectify my ignorance by visiting twice, first with my Yelp amigo, Kathy L and then again the following day. The café is in a pretty unexpected place, right next to the North Shore Events Centre. The first thing I noticed when I walked in was the smell of freshly roasted beans. I've said it once and I'll say it again - cafés that roast their own beans make consistently good coffee. I mean, that's just my experience but I reckon 99% of the time it holds true. The Coffee Lab is no exception. Here you get to choose your own beans from their three grinders. We took the advice of the barista and went Sumatran, who told us "it had a hint of vanilla and is good served black." Perfect. Could my unrefined coffee palate taste the hint of vanilla, no, but was the coffee strong and silky smooth - yes. In fact, it was so delicious that I ordered the same thing the next day. I am yet to try their food but the slices look off the chain - just like nana used to make them! No doubt, I'll be back soon.
