We did a drive at work & donated sealed plasticware. Nice people to work with and such a good organization!

The staff is helpful, kind and make you feel at home. The rooms are clean, nicely furnished and provide a place to feel at ease. You will meet other families from all over the country and make some lasting friendships. Thanks Lydia, Jeff, Debra, Mark, Michael and Dora.

The people who oversee the house gave us a tour and explained how they help these families. I took as many pictures as I could so that I could share this experience with you. The Fisher House is a temporary home (not hotel) for military & veteran families. It's literally an old 1960's home that has been gutted out and renovated into a beautiful modern mansion. The homestead is located behind the VA Hospital in Dallas, Texas. ***You may want to know that the surrounding area is indigent. There are a lot of people on foot. Most businesses have bars on the windows. But the VA Hospital itself is enormous and the security is intense. The Dallas Fisher House stays locked at all hours of the day and night. You are greeted at the door by security and if you are a guest you will have no problem getting in and out. The entire building is under surveillance 24/7. We felt very safe. Families can stay free of charge, while a loved one is in the VA hospital. They said some families are there for one night and other families have been there for as long as a year. Obviously, it depends on your unique situation. This location has many private bedrooms that include a private bath. My guess is 30 rooms. Families share a common kitchen, laundry facilities, a warm dining room, and an inviting living room. In addition, there is an outdoor patio and grill area. The tour guide said many companies come in and host a BBQ dinner. Across from the outside patio is a beautifully decorated media room. It includes oversized media chairs, a large screen tv, and a bathroom -- perfect for when children are in tow. The environment is clean, comfortable and quiet. The housekeepers are compassionate and helpful. The majority of there "help" is volunteers including Boy Scouts who build landscapes, make repairs or paint. Another source of support are people who donate thousands in memory of a loved one or to give back to other vets. The greatest experience was the appreciation of these families. They are exhausted emotionally and physically. They really need a few smilingly faces and something good to eat so they can keep going. Today was filled with many rewarding moments. Hope this review helps those who are trying to make a decision about traveling to the Dallas VA Hospital and what to expect if they stay at this partiduclar Fisher House location.
