I have several fur/feathered kids but one of my most treasured is my Goffin Cockatoo, Molly. I adopted her a little over a year ago. For the past 20 plus years, I've not had any exotic pets, parrots etc. when I did as a younger adult, I took the to Dr Vaughn. My point is, when I got Molly, I immediately knew I needed to look for Dr Vaughn again and I'm so glad that I found him. Completely on a different end of town but his care and hospitable demeanor hasn't changed a bit. Located off Shelbyville Rd on Moser, just South of Hurstbourne Lane, he has a stand alone clinic with some of the friendliest and most knowledgeable staff they you will ever meet. Dr Vaughn himself is widely known for treatment of exotic animals (I even took my sick Iguana and Squirrel to him as a kid) but he is must definitely the best Avian Vet in this area. I brought my 8-year-old Hahn's macaw to Veterinary Associates Stonefield for what was supposed to be a routine wellness exam and beak trim. Prior to the appointment, my bird appeared healthy, active, vocal, and behaved completely normally. She had received annual veterinary exams and routine grooming throughout her life without complications. During the appointment, my bird was taken to the treatment area. Less than a minute later, I heard a loud scream, followed by silence. A short time afterward, I was informed that she was in distress and was asked whether I knew she had heart problems. To my knowledge, she had never been diagnosed with any heart condition. When I was brought into the treatment room, my baby was unresponsive. A staff member appeared to be performing chest compressions while Dr. Roppel stood beside the table. I did not observe monitoring equipment being used. My bird did not survive. I later obtained an independent necropsy. The pathologist did not identify a definitive cause of death or any abnormalities that explained why an apparently healthy bird died during a routine examination. Because of the circumstances, I filed a complaint with the Kentucky Board of Veterinary Examiners for review. My baby was a beloved member of our family for eight years, and her loss has been devastating. I encourage bird owners to ask detailed questions about avian experience, handling procedures, monitoring practices, and emergency protocols before entrusting their birds to any veterinary clinic. This really makes me angry and sad to say this. My cockatiel was being seen here and they all seemed amazing. Bo, that works up front is very nice. Ever since I took my cockatiel here, he has had injury to his wings and I've been out of pocket a lot of money because of broken blood feathers. He had another one break at the shaft yesterday and I had to rush him to shively. The doctor came in and said "who cut his wings?" I told him and he literally said "do not go back there." They said it's common knowledge how to trim wings being an avian vet and they cut them completely wrong, and this is why he keeps having blood feathers break." They were messed up bad and he was in pain. The doctor at stonefield cut all the wrong ones and his wings have been messed up ever since. I have to spend another $200 in 2 weeks so they can try to repair the damage caused. The assistant as well grabbed him very hard and I called about that, and never got a call back. Luckily my conure hasn't had her wings clipped here. I'm sure I'd be dealing with the same issues. Never again! read more

He (vet) picked up my 12 pound cat by the scruff of her neck while she was already having respiratory difficulties and he caused her to go into respiratory distress. I got extremely upset and I chewed his ass! I got my cat back in the carrier and we got the hell out of there! I didn't pay him for the visit either, and I sure as hell wouldn't give him a dime for his horrific treatment of my pet, or anyone else's pet if I were you! This man needs to be put out of business! He doesn't know what he's doing as far as true vet care and I strongly caution you not to bring any of your loved fur babies here, as you don't know what will happen to them under his care. My dog was miss diagnosed with a heart problem. I had called multiple times voicing my concerns on reactions to the meds. When I had to go for a second opinion they saw nothing wrong with his heart just allergies and a viral cough. I was able to be refunded by the vet for the charges that lead to the misdiagnosis. The vets "bed side" manor is poor and he refuses to fully explain anything or give alternative options. Seems more like a money grab because I was charged a very high rate for meds that were cheaper elsewhere and he would not write me the prescription to get them any where else. I was asked not to report him to the boards, I have yet to decide on wether or not I will for what he put my pup through. read more

Took my little fur baby maltipoo to this amazing little local vet and I knew I would like it just by the customer service that I was given. I first walked in to be greeted and scared to death by a parakeet squawking "Charlie." He was the most coolest bird that I've seen that could comprehend and laugh at jokes. The front desk lady was nice to little Solomon and updated me about everything. We went into the room for his shots and they were easy and quick. Dr. Vaughn loved my dog but Solly disagreed lol! He was scared for his life. Lol! This is the best local vet to take your amazing little furry ones to. I will be going back again !!! read more

When I first got my cat, Zoe, from the Animal Care society, they gave me a coupon for a free exam to Veterinary Associates, so I decided to take her there since they said she needed to be seen within a week. This is my first pet that I've ever owned in my adult life, so I really haven't had much experience with vets. After coming here for about a year, unfortunately I have not enjoyed this clinic, nor do I wish to come back. Let me start with some good things: It was always easy to get Zoe in when I wanted to. Their availability was pretty open, so that was never an issue. The appointments never lasted very long and they usually took us back on time. The front desk staff were friendly, but sometimes did not seem to know what they were doing. The last time I brought Zoe in was July, and I asked them when she needed to be seen again. "I don't know, maybe in a year?" They said. Fair enough, she is a healthy cat and is low maintenance. That following January, I am getting bombarded with emails and mail stating that she is "SERIOUSLY OVERDUE" for a fecal exam and 6 month check up. The clinic itself is pretty small. There is a parrot who always sits in the waiting room that makes the most god awful screeches I have ever heard. And I mean I jump about 10 feet everytime I heard it, I do not see how this could be pleasant for the animals or anyone else coming in! The rooms are okay, but the doors do not close all the way. I usually have to either hold onto Zoe or hold the door so she doesn't get out. Dr. Vaughn seems like he has a lot of experience with animals and is very caring of them. I don't mean to sound like a jerk when I say this, but he always gave me very odd vibes whenever he would treat Zoe. He would never greet us or seemed friendly. He also would always make a sales pitch at me to buy something at the end of every visit, stating I absolutely had to have it, when it would be the same item I could buy from Target but 3 times the price.It was just..very annoying. I hate writing review like this, but I have to be honest and say that I would not recommend this clinic to others. I just don't feel like our presence is cared for, nor is it the best environment. read more

My daughter and her roommate brought in a desert lizard that was not shedding as it should. The rude Vet Dr. Vaughn told them they could do it themselves with a wet q-tip and slowly. He then began to rip off the dead skin causing the lizards eyes and genital area to bleed. He made negative remarks about my daughter wearing a face mask and snickered at her for doing so. He was abrasive, abusive to the lizard and should not be in business. My daughter and her roommate are traumatized by what he did. What a horrible human he is. Don't go there with your pets. He also charged her $50 for this abusive behavior and mocking them. He needs to be put out of business. Don't take your pets there! Update 6/15/23, our Desert Lizard is now blind due to Dr. Vaughns abusive actions. We took the lizard to another Vet to confirm. He is currently being treated by a Vet who cares. My experience here was awful. I was left in tears. He was rough with my bird. I had him clip my birds fingernails and he cut way too far and his toes were bleeding a bunch. He claimed that his toes weren't bleeding when we left but they were. By the time it got bad I was stuck in stand still traffic and couldn't go back. If I could give it zero stars I would. read more

Dr. Vaughn is one of the most knowledgable vets I've had the pleasure of meeting. I worked at a pet store for about nine years where he would come multiple times a month to give full checkups to all of the animals coming through the store. He could go from parrot to puppy to rabbit, handling them so swiftly, and administering vaccinations as necessary, without them getting too stressed as many animals do at the vet. He's one of the top in his field, doesn't beat around the bush or sugarcoat anything, and knows how to handle all animals and situations. I highly recommend him! read more

I have to say I have been taking my pets to this Vet for a while and have ALWAYS been happy with them. But today I took my yorkie to get shots and groomed. The vet side was still great. I can not say that for the groomer. I have a 4 month old yorkie. When I first saw her I noticed she hadn't done a top knot. No big deal until I got in the car and looked closer. She had cut her top knot off. I have been growing the hair on the top of her head for a while and she cut if off. Why would you do that to a female yorkie??? While I will always take her to the DR I will not be using the groomer again. read more

I started coming to Dr Vaughn with my mature greyhound mix about 2 years ago when I moved to the area. His was the closest vet office nearby, but I think I lucked out by going to him. I believe Dr Vaughn is the only vet working at the office so it is usually quiet when you arrive. He has a parrot at the front door (Charlie) that likes to catch people of guard with his squawks, but other than that it is a very calm and quiet office. I've never had to wait for any of my appointments and I've never had any problems with scheduling an appointment at the time I want. If they didn't have the exact time I wanted on a certain day, they would always have it sometime later in the week. The staff are all very nice and friendly, and they are all animal people that obviously care about your pet. Which isn't a surprise if you know Dr Vaughn. Dr Vaughn's top priority is always the animal. He's not one for making small talk, but he is a very caring and compassionate person, for your pet first of all, but also for the owner. My dog was diagnosed with lymphoma a few months ago. I told Dr Vaughn that I didn't want to get chemo therapy since from what I read it wouldn't cure the disease, just prolong my dog's life with a lesser quality of life. Dr Vaughn agreed and said he wouldn't have recommended it anyways. Throughout my dog's disease Dr Vaughn's treatment consisted of managing the symptoms and looking out for his quality of life. When the time finally came to put him down Dr Vaughn supported me in my decision of the timing - I didn't wait until the very end, but rather decided to put him down when he was obviously uncomfortable and in pain in his everyday life. I wasn't sure if I was making the right choice but Dr Vaughn assured me that it was the right choice. He doesn't like to see animals suffer. When the time came to put my dog down Dr Vaughn told me he was very particular about how he does it so that the animal doesn't suffer. Well, he didn't suffer at all and I was able to say goodbye in a quiet but comfortable room which wasn't an exam room before he eventually took him to the surgery area to put him down. I was with him the entire time. It was very emotional but the staff and especially Dr Vaughn were very caring and supportive. They helped make a very difficult situation a little easier to bear, and for that I am extremely thankful. Besides taking care of my dog during his end of life transition Dr Vaughn also did a minor surgery on him within our first year of visits (fatty tumor removal and teeth cleaning). My dog did well after the surgery and recovered nicely. I would recommend Dr Vaughn's practice to any and all pet owners. As well as being a good vet he is a very caring and compassionate person and so are his staff. Another small piece of advice, his office fills prescriptions through an online pet pharmacy, which is really useful for regular prescriptions like heart-worm medication. It's a simple system to use and the prices are (in my experience) cheaper online. read more

Dr. Vaughn is a highly experienced and professional veterinarian, and well known in the bird community for his aptitude when diagnosing parrots and birds of all sizes, from finches to macaws(and the occasional chicken!). He is also one of the few surgeons in the region which treat small animals such as rabbits and guinea pigs. He also is knowledgeable in regards to reptiles and other exotic pets. Friday 7/22/2016 appt 1:30pm Arrived at 1:20pm & stood alone at the reception counter til 1:45pm then left! Radio blasting down the hall in the back somewhere as if a party was going on! I yelled out twice, but no one ever emerged! Parrot screeching bloody murder in the waiting room! My cat screaming from her cage because the parrot's screeching was scaring her, yet no one ever came up to the reception counter. They even called me yesterday to variety I was going to keep my appointment! If this is the measure of their professionalism and how they care about their customers and our time, then, I defiantly do NOT want them caring for my animals with the same disregard! If you set an appointment, then make sure there is someone at the reception counter to receive the customer! Geez, it's basis 101 business! read more

Sam has had to perform not 1 but 2 surgeries on Pinkey that weren't the easiest....she's come through them both with flying colors. The first one took 3 hours and she came out with 6 drains. The second one saved her life from a deadly cancer. If you're looking for the cheapest then you're not going to like him....if you're looking for the best~and most direct/to the point/no fooling around Vet...then go there. Did I mention that he's the only avian certified vet around? I want someone who will be blunt and tell it like it is-he's my kind of Doc & I trust him 100%. I went to Dr. Vaughn to treat my brand new bunny that had stasis. He came into the room without greeting me, roughly handled my baby bunny, and bluntly told us that we'd be lucky if she lived. There was no comfort, professionalism, or bedside manner whatsoever. They took my bunny to another room without telling me what they were going to do to her or the status of her condition. He came back in and shoved a bag of meds to me with little explanation of how to administer them. I also asked him how to get rid of my bunny's smell and he told me to "deal with it". luckily the lady at the front desk was a Godsend and slipped me a post-it note with tips on how to wash her and reassured me about the possible outcomes for my sweet baby. I wish she was the vet! I get that I was one of the final patients for the day, but rudeness should not be what I was met with when I'm worried about my sick pet. I should've gone to Dr. Deck like I always do, but he was booked out. I do not recommend wasting your time at Stonefield, especially for small animals. read more

My rabbit has been a patient of Dr. Vaughn's for several years now, and I always enjoy taking him in (definitely more than he does!). The support staff is very friendly and always seem excited to see the animals. Dr. V is extremely knowledgeable and willing to answer all questions. He has a very nice way with people, always remembering us and our rabbit, and also with the animals. Again, you can tell he enjoys petting them and seeing them healthy. He is a bird expert but sees other exotic animals, as well as cats and dogs. There are two adorable tiny dogs who roam freely in the office, as well as a bird in the waiting room, making it a very friendly and relaxed environment. The waiting room also has a coffee center, but I've never had to wait more than 2 or 3 minutes. They've always been able to see me whenever my schedule allows. My last visit took longer than was scheduled, because I requested bloodwork that I hadn't previously mentioned, but we were able to stay in the exam room while the bloodwork was processed on-site. The pricing is very reasonable compared to other exotic vets. There are no surprise charges. I definitely recommend Dr. Vaughn and Stonefield. read more

We recently inherited a parrot that has been in my family for years. I was looking for a vet to get him a check-up and nails/beak trimmed, etc. I ran across Dr. Vaughn online and decided to make an appointment. I'm sure glad I did. Dr Vaughn takes his time to explain everything to you. He is so knowledgeable about birds and really helps you to understand what he's doing and why and what you need to do to care for your bird. Even more than that, Dr Vaughn takes the time to personally call you after the appointment to make sure your bird is doing ok. I've never had a vet who cares so much to do this. He also personally calls you with lab results. I am so impressed and will never take my bird anywhere else. RUN dont walk away from this Vet! We took our parrot to him last Saturday with a broken leg. This man is completely unprofessional! He came in looking like he was chewing a mouthful of cud, dirty shirt, dirty nails. He did not speak in complete sentences. He was extremely ROUGH with the handling of our bird and Bob made sounds he's never made before. He took a saw to cut off the birds leg band and CUT our Bob is MULTIPLE places! He didn't speak a word about these cuts and tried to hide them with the bandages. Charged us nearly $1k to put some popsicle sticks on his legs. His leg was NOT set properly and came out looking worse then when we took him in. We brought Bob home and followed all vet's instructions. Received a phone call from the vet saying he was worried that Bob's leg could be wet and he insisted we come in for it to be looked at. ( I'm sure he was worried about infection because he cut Bob in multiple places) We bring Bob in, same day ( Thurs 22nd) and the vet again handles him extremely ROUGH!! Is rough with his leg. Not an ounce of tenderness or caring at all! Took Bob back and did nothing but wrap more tape around his leg. The old bandage was never even removed!!!! He didn't even take a moment to see if the leg was okay or infected. Then he tries to charge us for the visit he makes he insisted upon. I REFUSED to pay this charge. The very next day( Friday 23rd) Bob is breathing heavily, very weak and not himself. We gently pick him up and can see clearly that his leg is extremely SWOLLEN and discolored and twisted off to the side. When we took Bob in his leg was not flopping around but now after his second visit it's clearly detached and has no use of his leg and never will. Before we took him in he was able to at least twitch his leg. Bob's leg is clearly infected as well and the vet who insisted we come in on Thursday never even bothered to check it!! We took the bandage off ourselves last night and cleaned his infected wounds and put a more stable splint then the vet had put on there. So we, cleaned it, re-wrapped, and splinted his leg better ourselves than the vet. There was NO way we were about to take our Bob back to this quack. THEN, I wake up this morning ( Saturday 24th) to a letter from the vet stating that he was no longer going to see our Bob due to my refusal to pay for a visit that he insisted on, where he did nothing but wrap more tape around his leg and hurt the bird even more!! This man obviously doesn't care about the animals at all and clearly just wants your money and wants you to keep coming in and paying him for nothing. You're better off trying to treat your animal at home then brining them into this money hungry quack. P.S. The vet is extremely flatulent read more

Stonefield diagnosed and saved the lives of my two Maltese. One had a liver shunt that nobody had previously figured out and the other had a tooth root that had migrated into his sinus passages. Took my dog in for diarrhea twice. 2 rounds of antibiotics. All in all,everyone there is friendly. But after starting her 2nd round of a different antibiotic my dog developed reversed sneezing and sounds as if she has laryngitis to the point of you can barely hear her bark. I called the vet Friday to ask them if i could bring her in to be seen just in case it was a reaction to the new medication,i was told no they couldnt see her even though they were the ones who treated her and gave her the mediciation. So i took my dog to an emergency animal hospital because she was wheezing and seemed to be having trouble breathing. I called several hospitals and vets that same day who told me "you should call the vet who has treated her so they can get her in to check her out" when i explained to them that i was told they wouldnt see her they were all pretty shocked. So basically 200.00 or so for the 2 vet visits i had..then another 150.00 for the emergency room visit all in a month.. While i dont have an issue with the people who work at this vet,i think it should be if you have taken your pet there and your pet is under the care for something or taking medication they prescribed,and develop a new issue out of the blue after starting a medication they should allow you to come in so they can at least check your pet out to make sure its nothing serious. I do not think i will be going back to this vet as my pet is like my child and i expect the best care possible for her. read more

I took my albino turtle to see this vet a few weeks ago. I told the vet that he was acting lethargic, not eating well, and showed him a few places on the bottom of his shell that seemed "touchy". This turtle had never had his fingernails clipped as that was not something I knew was supposed to happen. He used them to pull his meat apart. The vet was consumed with the idea that he needed his fingernails cut and blew the rest of his symptoms off as molting. He then cut all his fingernails, cutting the quick on all ten on his front paws. I was not happy about this. A week later when he still hadn't eaten I found another vet. He took one look at him, gave him two shots for an infection and he's been back to himself that very night. Don't say you take care of a type of animal when you don't know what you are doing. Waste of my time, my money, and my poor turtles hurt tootsies. He's very protective of his feet these days and has trouble tearing his meat up. I also just saw on his website that there is a $25 discount for new patients. Didn't get that. Go to Crestwood Animal Hospital instead folks. read more

I never write reviews, but this time I had to. I took my ferret here on the recommendation of the pet store that I bought her at. This place is ridiculous. The vet tech/ secretaries both seemed friendly and personable but the vet had all of the personality of a wet mop. He was not very friendly towards me or my ferret. I went to get her vaccinations was told she needed two shots prior as ferrets sometimes have bad reactions. Then was told I'd have to come back to get her distemper shot. Imagine my surprise when my bill for a rabies vaccination came to be $153.81 when I questioned it and was given a breakdown it's as follows - $20.91 rabies, $43.15 annual exam ( consisted of being weighed listening to heartbeat and quickly looking at teeth) , $38.66 diphenhydramine (Benadryl), $42.38 prednisone (steroid). I paid left and immediately called my vet (where I should have gone in the first place but I stupidly went with the recommendation instead). I was told by My vet (who apparently also treats and is knowledgeable with exotics) that a rabies shot for a ferret would be $10 and they don't charge an office visit just for a vaccination. When I questioned about the other two shots I was told those don't need to be administered UNLESS there is a history of bad reactions. ... I am furious, I just spent $153.81 on a visit that should have cost $10 not to mention that fact that my baby had chemicals injected into her that were unnecessary. Shame on you Stonefield. I will be sure to tell everyone I know to run not walk but run the other way if they want their fur babies to get good quality care. read more

My closest friend referred me to Dr. Sam Vaughn at VAS. She's taken her pets to him for over 20 years: first iguanas, then snakes, and now cats. I called VAS when my dog Buster was ill; he was suffering from bladder stones and required immediate attention. I am very lucky that I listened to Laura, as Buster ended up with a skillful, caring surgeon. Dr. Vaughn removed more than 50 stones from my 28-lb. Chihuahua/ Pug mix. When I took Buster to Dr. Vaughn, I knew that he was sick, but I didn't realize how ill he truly was until his one-week checkup. He was near death due to the placement of a cluster of the bladder stones; it's no wonder that he showed marked improvement the day after his surgery. That was one month ago and my 7-year-old is now acting like a puppy. He's much more active, mischievous, and back to his old self. I am thrilled with the outcome, and I could not be happier with VAS's treatment of him - and tolerance of me - during this stressful time. I have no children; my pets are my kids. I ask many questions because I want to comprehend what is being done and why, and I don't hesitate to telephone with inquiries if I feel it's appropriate. I decided to change veterinarians after 13+ years with the same doctor due to my experience with Dr. Vaughn and his staff over the past month. Dr. Vaughn is an extremely knowledgeable veterinarian who obviously loves the animals that he tends. He and his office staff treat Buster and me with kindness and affection. Buster's one-month checkup is tomorrow, and one of my two cats is going with us for a long overdue physical. She could not be in better hands. read more
