I was a client of Dr. Rupp's practice for five years, and after switching to another veterinary cardiologist, I realized how many aspects of my experience had been lacking. 1. **I never met Dr. Rupp in person.** During the entire five years my cat was a patient, I never once met or spoke with her face-to-face. Every appointment was handled by medical assistants. 2. **The medical assistants performed the echocardiograms and discussed the diagnosis.** After getting a second opinion, my new cardiologist personally performed and interpreted my cat's echocardiogram and explained that my cat's previous diagnosis may not have been accurate. That was very concerning. 3. **Sedation seemed to be the norm.** My cat routinely needed sedation for echocardiograms at this practice. At my new cardiologist, I was allowed to stay with my cat during the exam, and he remained calm enough that sedation wasn't necessary. 4. **The pricing and policies lacked transparency.** Fees increased significantly over the years, and I was never informed that the practice had changed its policy from annual visits to visits every six months for medication refills. When I called to schedule what I thought was my annual appointment, I was told I had to pay the much higher "first visit" fee--about $300-$400 more--because it had been over six months, even though my cat had been an established patient for five years. When your pet is sick with something serious, such as a heart condition, you are anxious, vulnerable, and scared. In this particular field your choices are limited. I read some good reviews about Dr. Rupp and while my regular vet didn't say anything negative, he really didn't say anything positive either when I told him I selected this office. Anyway, when you go there you have to realize that you will not specifically see Dr. Rupp. She evidently trains cardio interns or cardiologists in training and you will see a nurse and one of these doctors. I never met her until at least 3 visits in (several months apart) and only because I specifically requested to meet with her. She was nice enough, smiled alot, but I didn't really feel that she was overly concerned or knowledgeable about my particular pet and my concerns. My pet was relatively stable on meds when upon a visit with a new doctor in training, he decided to change my pet's meds due to readings on a Holter monitoring sessions. (as an aside, it seemed to me that this monitor was not fitted properly but what do I know). He put my pet on a completely new medicine called propafenone. I was not familiar with this, but he told meit is a human heart medication that is not widely used in animals, and that they were trying to expose their patients to it. My regular vet looked askance at me when I told her this and said she was not familiar with this medication. I asked my daughter who is in veterinary school, happened to be taking a section in cardiology at this time and asked her classmates AND professor who had NEVER heard of this or seen adequate research in using this in animals. But in any case, this is what the doctor had suggested, they didn't stock this medicine so i had to go running around to 2 walgreens trying to get it. Long story short my pet started having seizures caused by heart syncope. Was it this medicine or not? I don't know. I tried and tried to get Dr Rupp to call me back. But she was out of town and this other doctor was the one on staff. I thought at least that putting an established patient on completely new meds, and that patient having a bad reaction would maybe justify the doctor returning a call, even if out of town, but again what do I know? There were other things happening but this is the gist of it over a couple of weeks. They sent me to a neurologist. which I took him, blah blah blah. But I decided to go to another cardiologist, Dr Carpenter who was kind, and caring, and did all the necessary testing (took my pet off this medication), let me watch them do an ecc and even though there were trainee doctors there, HE was there with them. AFTER i decided on Dr Carpenter The OFFICE STAFF at Dr Rupps office have the personality of wall paper. They are not friendly, not concerned, just there, take your money and hand you medications. As I said, there are other things upsetting about this place but being that I can't quite remember everything chronologically, I decided not to include. The bottom line, it seems like this Dr, maybe once was good, but like she has checked out and decided to let underlings who need supervision run the office. I would not recommend anyone to go here unless you have no other choices. Dr. Carpenter is a much better choice, in my opinion and from my experience. read more

I've been with Dr. Rupp since 2017, with my first pup who passed away from CHF. Nothing but compassion and super helpful. Fast forward and I've had my second pup with mitral valve insufficiency. He started going to her in 2019. I go once a year where he gets everything done and checked. Everyone is always nice and never had an issue. If I message needing a script it gets handled asap. I do have to drive and hour and 30 min but it's worth it. I won't take my dog anywhere else. Sunny has been thriving under Dr. Rupps care for years and I do not hesitate to recommend them. read more

Not only did I leave with all of my questions answered from their incredibly knowledgeable staff (Kaitlin [not sure I spelled it correctly] and the kind doctor was more than willing and able to answer every detailed question, outlining everything and answering things before I needed to ask. 2 days after my visit and them altering/adding to his meds, my 14 year old dog is running around like a puppy again. I believe this clinic is now in Pompano Beach. Where do I start? My Frenchie puppy has been here a couple of times within about under a year's time. First on her initial visit and the second when she turned about a year old. The visit was good and can't really complain. She was prescribed Atenelol from her first visit. I had arranged to pick up the monthlly subscription from CVS close to my house as this is where I have always picked up all of my prescriptions (human and my dogs). I have been picking up her Atenolol here from the very beginning, I'd say about nine months now without any issues. Around the third week of every month, I get a notification from CVS that her monthly supply of medication is ready for pick up. However, yesterday, which is Jan 27, I noticed that I have not received the pick up notification and my dog's medication will run out in a couple of days. So yesterday afternoon I personally went to CVS and followed up. They said that the prescription was due for renewal and that they have sent a request to Veterinary Cardiopulmonary Care Center twice already last week, one of them on Jan 19 via fax but have not heard back. They suggested that I personally call VCC and follow up and request that they authorize the prescription via a phone call. So I did. As I explained the situation to the VCC, I was told that VCC does not do prescription renewals via fax or via email/computer or make phone calls to CVS. I was told by the person on the phone to tell CVS to call VCC instead. In other words, CVS is telling me to have VCC call them and VCC is telling me to have CVS call them. As you can see, this is extremely frustrating because I, both their customer, is caught in the middle. CVS said they just faxed VCC again for approval while I was there. And VCC once again said they do not process fax requests. So I am not sure why this is happening now when I have been picking up my Frenchie's medication here for about 9 months! I have 4 other dogs and I also pick up their medications on the same CVS location. I have dealt with many different veterinarians, oncologists, vet neurologists in the past and I have never experienced this. Every veterinary clinic have always found a way to send and renew the presciptions to CVS. I have been doing this since 2010 because I have had ten dogs since then! In my 13 years of picking up prescriptions at CVS, this is the first time I have had to deal with this. In the end as I have voiced my frustration, the VCC person on the other end said they will do a one time only courtesy call to CVS this time. Yes, a one time courtesy call to help this customer whose dog is running out of medication! I should be so lucky that she is willing to do this one phone call this time! Then she also told me that I should find another place to get the medication instead of CVS and she will email me a list of places VCC works with. Again, in my 13 years of picking up my different dogs' medications at CVS and with my 13 years of working with other different veterinary clinics, this has never happened before! I am shocked at the lack of willingness to help a customer! I understand that they are probably busy at VCC and they have no time to call pharmacies to approve prescription renewals, or do fax, or approve via email. But like I said, other vets have no problems doing this. As of writing, I still have not received the refills for my dog's medication and tomorrow morning, she does not have medication to take. Not sure if VCC even made that "prize" courtesy call I was awarded to CVS! I am extremely frustrated! Way to provide customer NO service VCC! read more

More than one office, and I'm shocked. Your pets healthcare cannot be dependant on an office that functions in total confusion. I have never met the board certified cardiologist and sincerely hope my dog did. But since leaving have had medications as directed at the appointment, medications changed a few hours later in a phone call, changed again two days later in a voice message. Im angry and sincerely feel I was taken. Will wait a few weeks and make an appointment with another cardiologist to confirm that what is being done is correct. SINCERELY at this point I dont trust a thing they say and have never spoken to the vet. read more

I say this all as someone who currently works in human cardiology and who was a vet tech in the past. To start with, Dr. Rupp was recommended to me by my current primary veterinarian and came highly regarded. That is why this review even has two stars. I can tell she is a compassionate and caring individual despite the issues I have with how things are being handled which I do feel partly are her/the other physician in the office's fault. I have a 10lb, 15 year old Pomeranian. He has had known valvular disease which has recently progressed to where it was recommended I see a cardiologist. We had to wait a month and a half for this appointment. My dog suffered this entire wait with horrendous coughing fits throughout the nights. So severe in fact that once we were seen by Dr. Rupp he was immediately placed on 6 different medications, we were told it was severe and to expect a life expectancy of 6-24 months. Realistically with his current state, I would be shocked if he made it longer than 6 months and I understand I have been fortunate to have had him as long as I have. We had concerns about starting that many medications at one time but were assured we should. Lo and behold, my dog developed extreme anorexia and diarrhea. We're talking projectile liquid diarrhea alternating with black liquid goo. We tried to keep faith and kept giving his medicine diligently, trying our best to get him to eat whatever we could. The only time he accepts any food is in the short window where his meds have worn off before it's time for his second dose. That Friday we thought we were turning a corner and seeing improvement and then went right back to the horrific constant diarrhea and called the office. Their suggestion? See another vet. Seriously. That was what they wanted us to do. We said whoa maybe we can try different meds, dosages, etc? The vet tech had to be asked several times before she finally decided to go speak to a DR who told us to discontinue two of the meds. Said we could come for his follow up kidney bloodwork earlier if needed. One of the meds they told us to continue, Pimobendan, is EASILY found in various articles (peer reviewed even!) to cause gastro upset in rare circumstances. Supposedly it is self limiting (HAH) but I trusted them and continued to give it. My dog had not eaten more than a bite or two of food a day for 4 days at this point. Over the weekend I made the decisions to discontinue the medications after Saturday seeing my dog suffer all day. Sunday we had no meds and did see improvement in his eating/slight improvement in diarrhea but the cough returned. Monday we called and asked to come do his bloodwork and they fit us in as they could. His kidney values came back slightly high but what was expected given his meds and they suggested we try a slow integration of the meds instead of all at once. Kind of like how we were concerned about initially. We also asked about getting an appetite stimulant to which they said they could not write us a script or call one in and to speak to our normal vet. We started the tapered introduction of medication, diarrhea improved however I wonder how much of that is the meds vs the fact my dog is literally not consuming food at this point. Otherwise he acts happy now that his poor bottom isn't sore from having diarrhea for a week. We spoke to our regular vet today who is unfortunately out of town until next week and unable to help. She is absolutely baffled as to why they will not simply call in the medication to a pharmacy for us. We called Dr. Rupp's office and were told there is no one in the office after 3pm and they don't prescribe anything outside cardiac meds. I'm at my character limit so in summary: You will wait a month or more for an appointment, you will be told to do things that may go against common sense, you will pay a lot of money for it, and you will be abandoned by this office and it's staff should your pet have problems. The grief of losing a loved one is deep and profound. Compassion should be paramount in healthcare and it isn't here. read more

Dr Rupp and her staff are the top of the top I'm so glad I found her. My 9 1/2 yo Cavachon was diagnosed heart murmur stage 2, 3 yrs ago. She was last seen 5 mo. ago and is up to stage 4. My two fur babies have been seeing Dr Rupp and her team since they were diagnosed with heart murmurs - one pup in 2017, and when our other pup was diagnosed in 2019 we didn't hesitate to bring him to Dr Rupp and her team because of their excellent care of our first pup. She and the rest of the staff have always gone above and beyond taking care of them, not overlooking any symptom or detail to make sure my pups are in the best health. They are always friendly and extremely helpful. Dr. Rupp was very thorough. She took the time to explain the good and the bad. Her team was knowledgable and asked excellent follow-up questions. I've given up on this doctor. Waited almost an hour just to check my cat in for a cardiogram. Listened almost the whole time to the office staff complaining about a client. It when on and on. Made me wonder what they might say about me behind my back. Went to pick up my cat at 6:00pm. Waited over an hour then was taken to an examination room and waited another half hour (this happens frequently at this office). Finally took my cat and asked that the doctor call me. Paid the $458 bill. Never got a call from the doctor. Instead received an amended invoice for $609 (good luck collecting the difference) and an email from the doctor with the test results. Very unprofessional from start to finish. I'll always do what's best for my cat but I'll look far and wide for someone else. read more

The receptionist and actual doctor were, and have been, top notch over the past couple of years with my friend's dog with a heart condition. I often accompany my friend to these visits. However, this most recent visit was overshadowed and very unpleasant because of the vet tech that preceded seeing the doctor. He was condescending, dismissive and rude when collecting an update on the dog's progress. He took the dog back for the exam and then we met with the (in extreme contrast), kind and compassionate doctor. At the end of the visit, the tech was behind the counter when checking out. He started to explain something about a medication to us that we were all too familiar with, inasmuch as the dog has been taking it for over a year. When we told the tech that we were aware of what he was about to tell us, he snapped at us saying, "well I'm going to tell you anyway, so listen". We listened to what we knew and then he went on to say that he could sell us the medicine, but it would be over $200. We knew from his tone that he was trying to dissuade us from wasting money on something that would be $14 at a pharmacy, but he was sarcastic, arrogant and almost demeaning. My friend proceeded to pay the receptionist $230 for the visit, which she is usually happy to do for the care she is grateful for with her dog, but this time it felt like we had been beaten up and shamed (?). I just thought someone there should know, and hopefully care, about this. The vet tech's name is Noal and he shouldn't have been at work that day. The patient/customer should not be spoken to the way he spoke to us. Thank God the check up for the dog wasn't negative, however the visit was. read more

They have been treating my rescue dog, Kenji, for his heart issues that resulted from his previous owner neglecting him and allowing him to get a bad heartworm infestation. When I got him he would faint whenever he got excited. Dr. Rupp got him on the right medications which allowed him to safely go through heartworm treatment. Almost 2 years later, Kenji is doing great to the point where he is now off his heart medications. I cannot thank her enough. Two years ago, Dr. Machen was recommended by my regular vet to check out my Boston Terrier's heart murmur. Unfortunately, the diagnosis was congestive heart failure. He had a very enlarged heart and bad valve disease. At the time, I asked Dr. Machen how long does he have to live. Her estimation was 1-2 years. But she said with medication and care, his time left could be good. His last two years were good but we noticed a change in the last few weeks. Sadly, we lost our precious Kingsley a few days ago. I want to thank Dr. Machen and her team for providing the best care. You can tell that they are passionate about what they do. Dr. Machen always took the time to explain what was transpiring and ensured that all of my questions were answered. I always felt confident that Kingsley was being looked after by the best. My cat died in my arms after I was told everything was "okay". It's taken me awhile to be able to write about this, but I feel they (or at least one of the vets) are responsible for my cat's death. I'll describe my experience. There weren't any immediate appointments available, so I had made an appointment with Dr. Rupp for the following week for my cat who was acting lethargic and who I suspected of having lung or heart problems because of his behavior. I was told the charge would be $800. For some that may not be a lot, but I had to borrow that money due to the urgent necessity. Both my wife and I took that day off from work because we were hoping for the best, but preparing for the worst. When we arrived at the office the following week, I was informed that things had changed, and that I would be seeing Dr. Machen instead. We didn't like this, but again due to the circumstances, we felt we didn't have a choice since it had already been a week and we needed my cat seen without further delays. We were told to leave our baby and that I would get a call with the findings of the exam. Approximately 90 minutes after, I received a call stating that due to heart disease, my cat did have fluid in his lungs, which was causing his symptoms & that it could be drained. There was also a possibility that he may not survive the procedure. I gave the go ahead for the procedure & was told I would be called later in the day. A few hours later, I was told that they had been successful in the procedure, however my cat, along with medication given, could last another year. So I was relieved that my cat survived the procedure & also saddened by the news, yet grateful to have at least a few more months with my baby. I was told to pick him up in a couple of hours after they made sure he was okay to be released. After the couple of hours had passed (which was about 10 minutes before closing on a Friday, I picked up my baby. I was told that he may be tired for awhile. I paid the $800 and left. Approximately 5 minutes after I left, my cat was having difficulty breathing. I pulled over & immediately called the vet. I explained the situation to Dr Machen & informed her that my cat looked like a fish out of water gasping for air and proceeded to ask her if aside from acting tired, was this also to be expected post procedure (which I doubted). Her FIRST question to me was, "how far away I was", which led me to believe that her priority was closing up the office and starting her weekend. I told her that I was only 5 minutes away. She then he was probably reacting to the drive home and stated that he should be fine once he gets home and if he continues in the same manner for the next couple of hours, to take him to an emergency hospital. I followed her advice. After about 10 minutes after we got home, my cat went into a convulsion like gasp, vomited a clear liquid, and died in my arms. To this day, I regret not ignoring her, and driving back immediately - And this happened September 19 2014. So I went through the roller coaster of being warned that he would have about another year to live, possibly not survive the procedure, then thankfully surviving it, the vet telling me that he was probably gasping due to the nervous drive home, then him dying in my arms. I was emotionally prepared to lose him DURING the procedure - NOT AFTER I was told that he would be fine. Not only did I lose my baby that day, but I lost over $800 dollars for a procedure that he didn't survive and another $200 on his cremation that evening. I regret ever going there. They called to follow up on Monday, and after I told them what had transpired, they told me that Dr Machen would call me later that day. I received a call either the following, or the day after, basically blaming the death on a heart attack - which in my opinion, may have been prevented or at least treated had she told me to bring him right back. Even if he would have died in their care that afternoon, I would've at least been fine that he was in "professional" hands. But I guess to some "professionals" on a Friday at 5:00pm - all that goes out the window when you're in your early 30's & the weekend is about to begin.
