They had just started a gifted program ( yeah yeah yeah ... I'm smart, W/E ) at the school and had kids from all over coming in for it so there was a big diversity amongst my classmates, not just from one race/class/neighborhood/etc. From what I recall I had a fun time back then and learned alot. I remember playing stoop-ball in the back area, cartoons on a big screen in the auditorium during the 2nd half of lunches when it was raining outside, holiday performances, graduation, etc. When I returned to the building for the first time after I had finished going to school here it was many years later and everything, such as the water fountains, seemed much lower to the ground than from what my memory had ... guess I must have grown upwards, and maybe up too. :-) I'm glad to be part of their first ever gifted program 7-year kids.

She's kind, friendly, and you can tell she really cares about her students and her work. There was a class that went on til 9:10 one day even though it's supposed to end at 8:45 just because she wanted to cover all the materials. She spent an extra 25 minutes to help her students and to teach - really going above and beyond what was necessary. Other than that, she also - Creates a super welcoming environment in the classes. - Brings up tons of fun facts and nuggets of knowledge while teaching. - Is available outside of class hours to help with questions. Not that we should (in my opinion) bother her on her days off, but it's the thought that counts! - Holds you responsible by actually checking and going through your homework. I highly recommend the class - I'm only 8 hours through and I've already learnt so much.

I did a free trial lesson first, then paid for a single lesson before deciding if I wanted to commit to a 6-class package. The lack of pressure to commit right away was very nice, and the classes were more affordable than others I was looking at. Most importantly, I learned so much already in only a few classes! My friends, coworkers, and my boyfriend's family who speak Mandarin are all very impressed with my pronunciation and vocabulary. Yutong takes time to lock in the foundations and teaches with an immersive, multi-modal approach that I really like. Learning how and why a sentence is structured a certain way or how a character is formed helps me generalize the knowledge for a variety of scenarios vs rote memorization. As a heritage speaker with an…read moreintermediate-advanced level studying traditional characters, I was initially unsure if I would be able to find the right fit, given that most language classes are geared toward absolute beginners with no Chinese background studying simplified characters. However, Yutong Chen, the owner of Unlock Chinese, as well as my instructor Jing Zhao, proactively worked with me to tailor the lessons to my needs. I came in with a textbook that I wanted to study, and even though it was new to both and had traditional characters, they were willing to go with the flow and teach it to me! I enjoyed my lessons with Jing Zhao, and we had a lot of interesting discussions about culture and society - I got to use new grammar and vocabulary in context, which helped me internalize new concepts. As a working professional, I thought it would be challenging to keep up Chinese while working a full-time job. Thanks to Unlock Chinese, I've not only maintained my Chinese but also advanced further in a low-pressure environment!

Before this, I was trying to self-learn the language via Duolingo, and often felt stagnated. Despite going through the lessons and having a 200 day streak, I didn't feel like I was making any progress in truly understanding the language and just parroting/guessing at sentence structures. The structured classes at K-talk place an emphasis on learning grammatical structure and expanding our vocabulary with USEFUL words (looking at you Duolingo - who needs to say "the fox and the milk" in real life??) are so helpful in helping establish a solid foundation for the language. Yeorim-ssi is a great teacher and makes each lesson fun and entertaining. It's also fun to have a cohort of classmates who are also pursuing the same goal as you (and to complain together when we get to learning the more unintuitive parts of the language :)) Would highly recommend trying out K-talk for anyone looking to learn/improve their Korean ability! The teachers are all good - all native speakers from what I can tell, and the classes are always fun. Because the classes are usually small, you get to practice speaking a lot (yes it can be challenging, but this is how you learn :)). And they also teach you how to read and write Chinese (to me that's the hardest part). Package prices are not bad at all IMO. The BM e-book is great for reviewing class material and practicing new words/grammar. The school also has regular events where you can meet other students, practice your Chinese and learn about Chinese culture, holidays, food etc. If you have questions, Sissi (the owner of BM) always replies to emails or text messages very quickly.
