This past summer, I was in Pauline's French 3 course and I was extremely satisfied with my experience. Initially, my course was cancelled, but the JP Linguistics team were quick to find a solution for me and ended up placing me in a more advanced beginner course rather than the introduction course I almost signed up for! And for that, I'm fortunate because I had been wanting to get back into learning French, but never had the time between work and school. And by making sure I was placed in the right level, it made me feel like JP Linguistics cares a lot about our language learning journey! In the course, the first day we began speaking French. Though bits were repeat from my high school classes, they proved to be great refreshers (especially for the grammar and conjugations!). What makes JP Linguistics courses stand out is their small, intimate group setting. In my experience with Pauline as our professor, I felt safe and comfortable to practice speaking and listening in French as well as to ask SO many questions! Pauline excelled in keeping the group focused, but also keeping the atmosphere warm and relaxed. I will try to make this useful. My wife and I, after studying French in the past at a high level many, many years ago, have found taking an advanced class a pleasant and effective way to bring our French up to date. Perhaps more helpful is to say why we prefer it to our first thought,a better known competitor. Better location. More personable. More individual attention. They actually responded to our inquiry promptly. We recently met someone who works at the main competitor who said we made the right choice. JP's personality is warm and charming. He loves language and linguistics with a real passion. He is very open and very people oriented. The advanced class consists of very interesting people with a real connection to French culture. Classes frequently run over the scheduled time, because we are so engaged and having so much fun. Although some 50 years ago my French was nearly fluent, time and sensoneural hearing loss have basically destroyed my ability to understand spoken French. It is beginning to come back rather nicely now, thanks to the class at JP Linguistics. I suppose another question is whether as a small school it fits into the European system for certifying language instruction. It follows this system just as much as fi-af or the Goethe Institute or any of the state sponsored schools do. read more

JP Linguistics is an excellent language school. Overall I had such a great experience. They were super flexible with last minute scheduling changes and very accommodating. JP, the owner was so easy to speak with and very pleasant. He was always there to greet me and check in to see how the classes were coming along each time I attended class. The building space and classrooms were super modern and extremely comfortable. I had the pleasure of taking one on one sessions with Giuliana. She was such a delight to have as an Italian teacher. She was patient, very kind and considerate, and genuinely interested in my progress and what I wanted to get out of the language course. She brought an authentic experience to the classroom - finding ways to explore, explain, and share more about the culture while focusing on the language. I thought that this was a clever and well rounded approach to learning the language - making my experience fun and enjoyable. Also, she tailored our lessons so that they incorporated more than just the exercises from the book. She is fantastic and I am so fortunate to have had her as my teacher. JP Linguistics is the perfect format in which to learn French as an adult in NYC, for beginners through to intermediate/advanced levels. The class size is small (4-6 people) and classes last 2 hours. At FIAF, in contrast, classes are 10-12 people and last 3 hours - a very long time on a weeknight after work! As well, the classes at FIAF are more "by the book", plodding through a lot of grammar exercises and due to their sheer size provide limited opportunity for speaking. At JP Linguistics, because the classes are smaller, things are more spontaneous - while still being structured around a course book - including watching video and listening to audio recordings, some grammar, and of course conversation about French culture, current events, French goings-on in NYC, etc. JP himself is a brilliantly talented teacher who is from France but who is also completely fluent in English. So, he "gets" exactly what is hard for native English speakers to grasp about French. And he has a PhD in linguistics, but don't let that scare you - the experience as a student has the perfect combination of rigor and fun! read more

I have taken foreign language classes at quite a few places, and I've had the best experience at JP linguistics by far. I've never made so much progress in such a short period of time! I was looking for a center that offered both individual and group classes. I often feel self-conscious learning a new language, but the teachers at JPL always made me feel comfortable. They are warm, enthusiastic and great at what they do. The staff is exceptional not only in the classroom, but outside of it as well. The admin staff are extremely welcoming, accessible, responsive, and helpful. Scheduling is very easy. The group classes are small and intimate because they cap it at 6 students, giving each student adequate time to learn and practice through personalized teaching. After many years studying Italian at a competing school, I switched to JP Linguistics for advanced studies. I wanted a group class rather that private lessons, but was informed there weren't enough students at my level to offer a class. Nonetheless, they created an ingenious solution: Another student had been taking private lessons via Skype and was willing to have me join in. I joined Giuliana in the physical classroom and we linked to my classmate on-line. It worked perfectly. But more importantly was the quality of teaching. Giuliana had an assortment of tools up her sleeve: Italian film websites with film clips and essay questions. Written exercises in grammar. On-line Italian clips about grammar, idioms, and usage. And conversation, of course. All in all, a very positive experience that I'd like to repeat as soon as I can. read more

Recently I just finished a six month Spanish course taught by Professor Isabel Solano Patricia Zapata. My foreign language history consisted of three years of high school Latin so i was starting from scratch. Isabel was patient, while providing a structured lesson plan that allowed me to progress to an immediate level within a few months. Weekly homework was required and it forced me to practice sentence structure, conjugations, and tenses in my time away from class. Professor Zapata who has a masters in linguistics, has a calm nature in the classroom and takes pride in the growth of her pupils. I just finished up 12 hours of French private lessons with Pauline at JP Linguistics, and plan to continue lessons with her indefinitely! She is not only extremely professional and an excellent teacher, but she is warm and puts students at ease. For me, the biggest impediment to speaking a foreign language is getting over the fear of making mistakes and sounding silly. Pauline's calmness and patience really helps you get over those fears. I've taken 2 courses at JPL (after having a so-so experience at another French school), and I am so happy I found this program! I'm still blown away at how much my French has improved, even after the first few sessions. JP is a phenomenal teacher. As a native French speaker and linguistics expert, he is incredibly knowledgeable about French language (including slang!) and French culture. When I began, JP evaluated my background and suggested the course and level that I ultimately signed up for. My French was really rusty and I had to pick it back up for work. Over the past three years I've been taking a weekly group course with JP and it has been a life-saver. For five years or so, I've enjoyed weekly one-hour French classes through JP Linguistics and I must admit, my overall understanding of, and ability to read, write and converse in French has improved 100 fold. I love JP Linguistics. The guys working at the company are awesome alone but the tutors they get are so receptive and really in tune with the culture that they are teaching respectively.
