Many long holes, a bunch of tight shots through the woods, a few makeable drives, and a couple nice wide open bombers. This course is quite difficult, but it's beautiful and enjoyable. Much of the first half of the course is wooded and hilly, which presents its own challenges, while the back half is much more wide open and sunny, but provides challenges of its own with some epically long holes. This place holds the distinction of being the only local course where I haven't yet lost a disc (knock on wood for me please), and because it's a little outside of town it's a bit less busy than some of the other popular spots locally (Oshtemo and Cold Brook in particular). It doesn't have water hazards like some of the local courses, despite being next to a lake (none of the holes abuts the lake at Robert Morris Park).

A super gem of a park located behind the Oshtemo Township building & library. I was looking for…read morethe Lillian Anderson Arboretum and missed their drive and ended up following the sign for the Oshtemo Township Park. Boy, did we make the right turn! The park has 70 acres that includes tennis courts, playground, disc golf, pavilions, and walking trails. Even though the trails were snow covered, they were easy to follow. There are a lot of signs to make sure you know where you are. The forested area of the park is beautiful with rolling hills and as an added bonus you can connect to the Lillian Anderson Arboretum trails. I'm so glad we spent a few hours on a chilly Sunday exploring this beautiful area just west of Kalamazoo.

When we say "bog", it's for real. Theres a long boardwalk literally through the bog/swamp. After the boardwalk theres a more typical forested nature trail area. Also there is West Lake Nature Preserve across the street, so you can make a day of it really. Lots of photography opportunities here. I think it's a beautiful place. I've never seen more than maybe 4 other people on the trail. But seriously wear water shoes, athletic sandals, rain boots, or some kind of waterproof shoes. I wouldn't run here only due to the possible slippery nature of the bog area. I don't consider this a deterrent from visiting though, just plan ahead!

My first run here was when I was marathon training in a visciously cold winter. Ice below us crackled as we started across the boardwalk and water guysered up and completely soaked us. There's no experience quite like this ... Especially amid an 8 mile run when you're many miles from the car and any hope of changing. Brr. My nethers are shivering just thinking about it. It would be nice to see them use some of the huge influx of bikeway funding that will connect bishop's big and Schrier Park with Elaison Nature Preserve to raise the boardwalks a bit higher above the water.

There are three par-4s, but the longest is around 280 yards and all of them are reachable. But the course is well maintained and fun. The staff is friendly too. However, if you play during the day the course is full of older men who likes to call the office and complain. Today I played a practice round alone and, as is common, I would occasionally hit a second ball (practice another chip, putt, drive etc). Despite playing 9 holes in 80 minutes and shooting a score of 2 over par on my main ball, the two men behind me felt the need to call the office and report me for slow play! Note they only waited for a few minutes on holes 5 and 6. I know the world is full of a**holes, but I did not enjoy meeting them on a perfect Friday morning at the golf course.

It's so peaceful to paddle slowly through the reedy sections and connect to the neighboring lake (Howard Lake). Between the lake itself and its adjacent creeks/rivers, you could be busy from dawn to dusk exploring every little cranny. The main lake gets pretty busy with speedboats, though, so be sure to stick to the edges in your kayak and don't bring a tippy one!
