Great experiences with Dr Avis and staff. Both my children completed his orthotropic program and have great looking teeth and smiles without having the braces or retainers for years. The program is a family affair, as parents you must be involved with your child's care, my wife and I had to assist with the nightly adjustments, all told less than 5 minutes a night, we also had to remind them to wear the appliance after meals and to bed at night. Now my son is off to college and daughter is getting ready for high school both with no retainers or issues. Our extended family has been seeing Dr. Avis for the last ten years. It started with just one of us needing work and then, in time, each of us switched to his care. He is a third generation dentist in the same practice. There is no revolving door of multiple dentists and staff who treat you. You always get Dr. Avis and he is the best. The entire office is geared to personal care. The kindness and quality is far beyond any other professional we have encountered. He has corrected poor and troubling work others have done. He takes the time to figure out the real issues. He's up on the latest and practical ways to make our mouths do what they are supposed to do. He is so good our children enjoying going to see him! I can't speak to anyone else's experience. Ours has been amazing. Fillings, extractions, root canal, ortho and cleaning have all gone exceeding well. Our teeth are in far better shape with less fuss. No mistakes! Does your dentist call you later that evening at home to see how you are doing? Does your hygienist do that? Ours does. This is not a factory. It's dentistry. The office is relaxed, gracious and warm. And he sees you on time! If this review seems super passionate it's because we are truly grateful for the care we get. Dr. Avis is a brilliant and talented dentist and his staff is caring and supportive. I have been going to Avis Dental for over ten years and the level of care I receive here far exceeds any dental care I have received before. Regular check-ups and cleanings are a breeze and if you need serious dental work, I don't imagine that there's anything that Dr. Avis can't handle. I recently had an infected tooth removed and replaced with and implant and I couldn't be happier with the outcome. The amount of planning and attention that Dr. Avis brought to the task made the whole process seem simple and, as always with Avis Dental, it was painless. Thanks to Dr. Avis I have had orthotropic care and have straight teeth without ever having to wear a retainer after treatment. Dr. Avis is a scam dentist and just terrible. If you see reviews that are positive they're coming from his own personal friends and family. He ruined my child's life both physically and emotionally. He lied about how long treatment was going to take. He said it would take 18 months, 2 years later and my child's teeth are misaligned and lip posture is the same. My child gets teased about the way his mouth looks. It's horrible. He claims that he helps children by using alternative treatments such as Orthotropics which essentially is Biobloc so they don't mouth breath and to promote nasal breathing. He charges over $16k for this treatment. My child was stressed by this device in their mouth which caused injury to their permanent teeth and we had to stop treatment. We got the professional opinions of other dentist and an oral surgeon and they agreed. Both my child's teeth and mouth look much worse than when we started. He claimed that this alternative treatment of his would help with our child's lip posture so, he protrudes your child's upper incisors to make space for his appliance. 2 years later and my child's teeth are misaligned nor their mouth posture has improved. I know those positive reviews from other websites are either coming from friends, family and people who see him for general dentistry. I'm pretty sure they're not coming from actual patients who are using his alternative treatment. This caused my family so much heartache and pain. DON'T TAKE YOUR CHILD HERE!!! You will regret it. Now we have to fix our poor child's teeth. This treatment asks a lot from your child. It's not normal. These are just children. Don't do it. He claims you're family and that he cares about your child, but it's just to convince you that he's taking your money. read more

I feel Dr. Victor Avis is a thief! I used to see him many years ago. The office used to be a partnership, and the dentist I saw there for many years left the practice to teach. He assured me I'd be well taken care of by Dr. Avis, who wound up doing 3 fillings and a root canal for me. He always tried to sell me gold fillings, which I knew were superior but at the time I couldn't afford. He would also continuously refer to a "plan" he had created where he would replace all my existing fillings with gold! When he did do newly needed fillings for me he over charged me RIDICULOUSLY. I am talking 25 or more years ago, this man had the nerve to charge me $550 for a filling. After the last one he did, I called the insurance company to find out why they reimbursed so little. The rep was sympathetic, but couldn't come straight out and tell me I had been ripped off - but from what she was insinuating, I caught on. I proceeded to call a number of dentists around staten island and found out not one charged more than $150, or $200 for a white filling. I COULDNT BELIEVE IT. It seemed like Avis charged me as if I had done gold fillings, minus the actual gold. Or something like that. He had me on a "plan". I guess that meant that he had no intention of deviating from the profit margin he had projected from me. Yes, I am surmising the last part. However, what else could I believe??? Oh, and the root canal he did was inferior work, he only filled one canal and it had to be done over. People LOVE this man. He is reviewed so highly on rate-a-biz. He is thoughtful and caring and has wonderful manners, and his office and eqpt. are all top notch state of the art. But you pay for it, and he cleverly hides his THIEVERY!!! Oh, another thing - the hygenist liked to inflict pain. A heavyset blond woman. My teeth are very sensitive. I have had dozens of cleanings before and since, and no one ever hurt me the way that woman did. And - I still have all my old silver fillings - none of them were ever needed to be replaced. This was my experience. Look at your bills - and compare charges against "reasonable and customary" - and other dentists. And don't allow yourself to be talked into unnecessary dental work by this man. Just because he is nice and has good manners doesn't mean he isn't a thief and a con artist. read more
