I am so glad I read other reviews before going because I was prepared with hiking gear, water, snacks, and binoculars. You have to walk quite a ways to see the ponds. There are no cars allowed beyond the parking area. I highly recommend a bicycle if you want to see it all. We hiked five miles and saw four ponds and still only saw a portion of the preserve. There are no bathrooms which is a shame - I could only last a few hours before I had to leave. We saw many different kinds of birds today and really loved it!

If you are into hunting this is the place. Bubba (in picture below) was an excellent guide. He works hard at keeping the feeders stocked, spreading corn and putting you in the most likely stands. He also was skilled at skinning and quartering the hogs I harvested. Two of us went and I had the ability to kill 4 hogs in 3 days. My buddy that went didn't see one from a stand, although he did see them driving in and out and heard some from the stands. This is hunting, not a preserve or farm. The cook Val was amazing! She is like one of the guys! Lots of fun and laughs. She is a very skilled cook and passionate about making meals and deserts to please! The house was beautiful, clean and comfortable. The land was amazing! Thousands of acres. Corn spread and all feeders worked and were filled. There was game everywhere. Deer, Bobcat, coyote, Turkey and Hogs. Bottom line is it was our first-time hunting hogs. They treated us like family, taught us everything we needed to know, fed us like royalty and provided a beautiful home and hunting ground rich with game. Val is a excellent cook who kept us well fed with delicious southern style meals. Dan has 170 stands/blinds on the property. Bubba was our guide and his son Hunter helped him out both went above and beyond. Lots of corn spread out brought lots of hogs. I harvested a delicious 175lb boar. This was my second stay with Dan and Becky and I hope to have many more.I highly recommend Cypress Creek for your next hunting trip

This is part of a region where the sea islands are not developed and there isn't really any ocean…read morebeach access. The wildlife refuge, like a lot of land in the area, used to be a plantation and was converted into small farms after the Civil War. More surprisingly, it also used to have a WWII-era airfield. This means that much of the reserve is actually paved because its the remnants of said facility. The signs of the park's pastoral era are less evident, but an isolated stone fountain hints at the mansion that once occupied the area. Now the place is consumed with Spanish Moss and various tropical plant life. There is a loop which offers some waterside access. It isn't exactly prime tourist territory, but this is a wildlife refuge and not a park, so if you go in expecting something touristy you're in the wrong place. I did not see any alligators, but coming during the winter also meant that I wasn't swarmed by bugs, which is often the case around these parts. But for the hardy adventurer, this is an intriguing site.

Tom Collins overseas everything...and closely. His management of his many hunt areas is impeccable, from the way he drops people off to their stands, to picking them up, to scent and sound. He is a good man who really cares about his guests, and cares that they have a successful experience while there. Everyone I met on both my trips are those who keep coming back (and it is easy to understand why). This last time I only killed a 4 pt, but I did have the chance to kill a bunch of does. I recently booked a hog hunt with this outfitter after speaking with them at the Harrisburg, PA…read moreoutdoor show. Unfortunately, my experience raised serious concerns regarding security, safety, honesty, and overall professionalism. Security Issues (Immediate Concern) Within 15 minutes of arriving, I placed my gear in the assigned room (shared house with multiple families and children). There was no way to lock the room unless you were physically inside, and no key was provided. During that short time, someone entered my closed room and stole three live pistol rounds. I immediately reported this to staff and removed all of my belongings to my vehicle for the remainder of the trip. Although I was moved to another house, the same issue existed--no locks, no keys, and no secure storage. This is completely unacceptable, especially in a hunting environment where firearms and ammunition are present. Misrepresentation of Hunting Setup & Success Rate At booking, I was told to expect a 70-80% success rate and that hog activity was supported by feeders under green lights with camera monitoring. In reality:    *   There were no active feeder patterns producing hogs    *   I was told after arrival that hogs "don't respond" to feeders or green lights    *   Hunting consisted of placing 5-6 hunters per night into various stands/blinds and rotating them nightly ("musical chairs" approach)    *   There was no evidence of targeted scouting based on fresh sign or rooting Observed results during my stay:    *   One hog harvested prior to my arrival    *   One missed shot    *   One hog passed up for size, followed by a smaller hog being taken later This does not reflect the advertised success rate or a structured hunting strategy. Hunting Experience (Field Time)    *   Night 1: 7:30 PM - 5:00 AM No hogs observed (deer only)    *   Night 2: 6:30 PM - 12:00 AM Approximately 60 deer in field, no hogs The guide's primary method of locating hogs appeared to be driving around and glassing random fields between drop-offs and pickups, rather than actively scouting or patterning animals. Equipment & Guide Competency (Major Issue) The outfitter required the use of their rifles with thermal optics.    *   I was told the rifle was "already sighted in" and did not need confirmation    *   I insisted on verifying zero myself Result:    *   The rifle was approximately 4 inches off (high/right) at 50 yards More concerning:    *   The guide did not know how to properly sight in the thermal optic    *   I had to personally research and perform the zeroing process This is a serious failure in both professionalism and safety. Serious Safety Concerns This was one of the most troubling parts of the trip.    *   A group of clients (adults) were visibly intoxicated while handling firearms and shooting at the range    *   No intervention or enforcement of safety rules by staff    *   I was told a previous guide had been fired for:       *   Driving intoxicated with clients       *   Shooting animals instead of allowing clients to shoot       *   Shooting at a wounded hog in the back of a truck The fact that this behavior was tolerated due to personal relationships raises serious concerns about leadership and safety culture. Lodging & Food Conditions    *   Houses were unclean and poorly maintained    *   I was warned by another client to store food in sealed containers due to bugs in the kitchen area    *   Food provided was limited with no real options and generally low quality Overall Assessment Due to:    *   Lack of basic security    *   Misrepresentation of hunting conditions    *   Poor equipment preparation    *   Lack of guide competency    *   Multiple serious safety concerns    *   Unsanitary lodging conditions ...I chose to leave the hunt a day early. Final Thoughts This was not simply a "tough hunt." Hunting success is never guaranteed, and I understand that. However, safety, honesty, and professionalism should be non-negotiable, and in my experience, those standards were not met. I cannot recommend this outfitter.

Each meal was a delightful surprise, from hearty breakfasts that was off the chain to gourmet dinners that burst with flavors. The highlight for me was the steak and lobster for dinner and sausage gravy for breakfast, perfectly cooked. The hunting aspect was equally thrilling. Our guides were knowledgeable and passionate, ensuring we had the best possible experience. I went to hunt deer and the guides did everything possible to put me on them. The stands was so comfortable you could set in them all day. The location, it was great. There was peanut fields and soybean fields that was close to creek and branches giving you a better chance. The facilities were comfortable and welcoming, providing everything we needed to relax after a long day in the field. Overall, I can't recommend this trip enough. Whether you're an experienced hunter or just starting, this is a place you won't want to miss. I'm already looking forward to my next visit!

There are a lot of barrier islands around, but I can't think of another one that was this wild and…read morehas this sort of access. You can easily drive; it's only a minute off of the main highway to Hilton Head. But once you're there, you're walking into an atmosphere that feels a world away. The official paths are fairly wide and well-maintained, some are roads. The estimates given by signs assumed that you were pretty slow; I made it to the shell point and back in less than half the time they said. But it was still an hour and a half in what it must be said is a pretty hostile environment. You'll want bug spray and sunscreen (preferably bought somewhere inland where it's cheaper than it is in this area). And a lot of water. I never saw so much as a port-a-potty there, and there certainly wasn't any running water. And you need a lot of water. I bet that it's a nicer place to explore during the winter, which is generally quite pleasant in South Carolina, but regardless, the fact that a free space that shows of this fascinating environment is so easily available is worth considering regardless. If you tough it out, the gothic forests and aromatic marshlands will likely leave an impression.
