They have a very impressive art collection, which introduced me to Dan Namingha. Niman Fine Arts is the gallery that showcases Dan Namingha's work, as well as the work of his two sons: Arlo and Michael. Some of Dan's artwork is a bit contemporary for my taste, but there were a few paintings/sculptures that caught me eye. Arlo has a similar style to his father. And then there's Michael who just prints random phrases, such as "Am I better than you?" on pieces of canvas and tries to sell them for $500. If he's asking if he's better than Dan and Arlo the answer is clearly no! A bit (actually a lot) out of my price range, but 2 talented very talented artists...

She collects bird feathers all over town, puts them together and paints beautiful pictures and sceneries. If you dont have the funds for one of her true pieces of art, you can also buy one of her paintings that reflect those same paintings. The most interesting part of it all is that she Has only been painting for three years, is self taught and does it all free hand. That makes her art even more fascinating and admirable. She has a true passion for what she does and has definitely found her calling. She also such a lovely person. My husband and I really enjoyed talking to her. Do yourself a favor and check out her shop. It's absolutely magical. I could have spent hours there looking at all her beautiful creations. Santa Fe is so lucky to have such a talented artist on Canyon Rd.

After spending some time at the Georgia O'Keefe Museum, I wanted to see what other artwork Santa Fe had to offer. I had needed to see what happened before the buffalo were gone. A brief walk along Palace Ave led me into Huey's. The art in this gallery is American in nature and entirely native. It's a fantastic reminder of what this part of the country (or, more accurately, *this* country) used to look like. Inside the gallery is piece after piece of dramatic Native scenes. From lovers entwined in bronze to a warrior with bow & arrow drawn astride horseback in wood to a giggling child staring at you with eyes of wonder, captured in oil, I found myself mesmerized by the collection and eager to explore every nook and cranny to discover all it had to offer. The gallery doesn't need my accolades to give it business. Its work has been collected at The White House, The National Gallery of Art and The Smithsonian. But, I do think it's important to remember the importance of this gallery and others like it. Santa Fe is a beautiful city way set in the clouds (higher elevation than Denver). It's a wealthy city, home to many folks with lots of cash and vacation spot to even more people with more cash. Things aren't cheap (t)here. But, Santa Fe didn't always look like this. The Huey tells an essential part of this story, a story that must be heard and given voice... even while the privileged beauty of The City Different makes its halcyon call to wanderers of all sorts. Also the lady said to ask her any questions if we had any, so my friend asked her how long a specific painting took the artist, to which the lady responded "What difference does it make?" Turns out she was not only one of the owners but also the artist that painted one of the prints. After I learned that I was really disappointed that she was so disinterested in the customer experience- especially since I'm planning to buy a Kirk Buchanan original once one I want comes on the market. I'm not buying it from Art Mozaik though.

Whatever. No judgements here! Some of the wood carvings are done by extremely well-known traditional carvers, which is very cool! Loved the owls, and the (somewhat awesomely wacky) artwork. They really do have a variety of things, despite being a tiny space. The owner also is an artist whose work is on display in the area. Very cool guy, friendly, and down-to-earth. I really enjoyed chatting with him and learning more about the art and artists he has in his shop. It's very clean, which is appreciated. I would definitely return the next time I'm passing through the area!

By far, the highlight of our day was spending some time in this gallery with Jeffery Kuiper. We were lured in by the presence of Swoon's incredible mother piece, but taken on a delightful journey with Jeffery's knowledge of her work. "Walkie" is a mixed media piece with a window from a bygone era with the gaze of a boy that is hauntingly speaking to those who feel that gaze of soulful wisdom. We left the gallery feeling nourished on so many levels ... Many thanks.
