I haven't been to the restaurant in person but I got delivery through Dine In Victoria. I ordered Chicken Salad Rolls which were very fresh and crunchy. I also ordered Spicy Chicken with cashews which was excellent. Ginger Beef which was good but not amazing, and the House Fried Rice with BBQ pork and prawns, which was also excellent. (I realize this makes it sound like you should avoid the ginger beef, and that's not the case. It was fine, just not as great as I found everything else.) The main thing that really made the food good was not only that it tasted good, but it was very well made. ALL the vegetables in every dish were cooked properly and not just floppy bland mush that you often get in this kind of food. Even in the Ginger Beef, while it wasn't the best I ever had, it was all cooked perfectly including the vegetables. This was my first time ordering from Vietnam Garden and I really hope it wasn't a fluke and they are consistently this good. (Note on the packaging for delivery. It is adequate, but very thin. I actually like this because it's less packaging, and it's actual paper, not styrofoam, but it does mean you have to be careful when handling it to serve.) read more

I do not understand how this restaurant has 4 stars since this was by far the worst Vietnamese cuisine that I have ever eaten. So bad, in fact, that I did not even finish my meal. We ordered beef brisket pho and a rice vermicelli with spring rolls and grilled pork through Skip the Dishes. The beef brisket pho broth did not taste herbal, aromatic, or flavourful as expected. Instead, it tasted like any beef broth with a slight twinge of lime. The beef brisket was so tough that it was crumbling in my mouth. The noodles were starchy, not the slick rice noodles that make pho so enjoyable. The rice vermicelli was dry and starchy and the grilled pork was completely tasteless, which is strange since I would expect it to have a slight smokey flavour from the grill, at the very least. The only redeeming quality about this dish was the grilled Vietnamese ham but it wasn't enough to salvage it. For me, eating this meal was the equivalent of shoving plain white stale rice in your mouth. You do it for sustenance, but not for pleasure. read more

My wife and I have recently moved from James Bay to Esquimalt and we're thrilled with the number of ethnic restaurants here versus the old-folks-friendly or overpriced/touristy selection of the old hood. Vietnam Garden is somewhat of an odd establishment, not an exclusively Vietnamese restaurant, but a pan-Asian hybrid, with some western influences. The owner, who has a presumably Chinese (or possibly Korean) name, Ken Yu, has cooked extensively in Saigon, but also cooked at Le Crocodile in Vancouver. My wife claims that their salad roll happens to be the best she's ever tried - and we've had them in Saigon. All of the veggies were super-fresh and well prepared. She also enjoyed the dipping sauce served with the fried spring roll included in her vegetarian combo, as well as the spring roll itself. I ordered the special dinner combo, which I believe cost about $10 in total, but it may have been slightly more expensive. The combo consisted of a banana chicken curry, rice, a coconut milk-based hot and sour soup, a spring roll, and oddly, a small slice of New York Cheesecake. I found the texture of the chicken banana curry to be a little too gummy. The sugars in the banana candied the chicken and it made somewhat of a squeaky sound as I ate. The spring roll and soup were delicious, and the New York Cheesecake was surprisingly creamy and awesome. If you ever find yourself in Esquimalt, give this a try. read more

I've enjoyed all the food I've eaten here. The owner and staff are very friendly. It's a little odd in that the food doesn't always come at the same time for your table. So you might be left tasting everyone else's food while you wait! That's not necessarily a bad thing. Try the caramel fish. This is best eaten in the restaurant rather than take out. My friend who likes Chinese food swears that the sweet and sour pork is the best. My other friends loves loves loves the spicy coconut chicken. Always have to make the difficult decision whether to start with the spring rolls with fish sauce or salad rolls with peanut sauce Or possibly get a bowl that comes with a spring roll. read more

We had a craving for pho so we came here. My husband got the rare beef pho and I got the spicy lemongrass beef pho. Such big bowls for only $10!! We sos got two chicken spring rolls to start - deep fried and delicious. My spicy lemongrass soup was delicious. It was spicy and the broth was flavourful. While we were there, only a few tables were filled but there seemed to be lots of deliveries happening. I'd highly recommend this spot! read more

Excellent food! We had the spicy coconut rice with prawns and chicken. Very flavorful, cooked fresh, just the right amount of heat, and a good amount of meat. If I lived here, I would be back all the time! Sadly, I live in the US and am just visiting. They were also very accommodating for my gluten sensitivity and food allergies. read more

The Vietnam garden is one of my all time favourite restaurants! It is a family owned and operated business and is a small quaint little restaurant. The chef, Ken, is a very kind and generous man and an excellent chef! Ken is always open to changing or altering any dish to your preference of flavour, meat, spice and can also make your dishes gluten free. I have been coming here for almost 15 years-ever since I was introduced to it in University. The food is always fantastic and there are so many interesting dishes to try. The menu is a mix of Vietnamese and Chinese. Some of my favorites are the hot garlic prawns, five spice squid, Shanghai noodles with peanut sauce, pork and prawns and the Spicy Thai lemongrass prawn noodle soup. I always order gluten free chicken spring rolls as well...they are extra crispy and the flavours are fantastic. If you are a dessert person, I highly recommend the deep fried bananas and ice cream!! Yummm! The food is very reasonably priced and it never disappoints. I cannot even say enough good things about this place....I love it so much and I highly recommend it to everyone. read more

My daughter and I found this gem when I helped her move to Victoria. The two dishes we had were just amazing. We had the Spicy Chicken with Cashews and a special Coconut Tofu Mint Pineapple Soup. Both were wonderfully done and presented. And each dish we saw pass by on the way to other tables looked exceptional. Ken himself came up and introduced himself to those of us there. It's not haute cuisine or anything, but it's a good place for a quick, fresh meal if you live in the neighbourhood. I always have the Tom Yum soup so I can't say much about any of the other options. Not the best soup I've had by far. But it'll do in a pinch. read more

My husband and I had our wedding reception here. Ken (the chef and owner) and his fantastic staff and family, made our special day so wonderful. He was very careful with all the different allergies we had and went above and beyond our expectations! Everything was beautiful, very well done and delicious! Absolutely terrible. No heat the restaurant so we were looking forward to hot tea. Tea was watery and Luke warm. Pho is tasteless and is not serviced with fresh herbs or bean sprouts as is common in any other authentic restaurant. The meat was also very questionable. I have pho twice a week and can definitely say after trying countless places that this was the second worst soup I've had. Also, we were the only ones in the restaurant at the busiest time during dinner. That should have been an indication. There are many other places in Victoria to go for excellent vietnamese food. I suggest you avoid this one. I suggest green leaf bistro for taste and portion. read more

The food here is consistently good & fresh, the service is always great, and it feels a little like being in the family kitchen.. in a good way. The walls are covered in art that the chef (I believe) painted himself. Good music. Nice atmosphere. Just wish there was a little more vegetarian options. This place is a plain, simple restaurant. It is not a high class establishment, and doesn't have much of an atmosphere. However, the pho is the most delicious and aromatic soup I have ever eaten. The staff are always really friendly and sometimes bring free spring rolls for me to try. I always enjoy going to Vietnam Garden, and it's probably my favorite place to eat in the city. read more
