This review is a bit late in coming, as the good doctor performed my hernia surgery almost 2 years ago (June, 2024). I had been living with an annoying (but not particularly painful) lower abdominal hernia for years, and finally decided to get it repaired. I was initially referred to Dr. Konyalian by my primary care provider, and the whole experience was great. The entire process was efficient, the office staff was great, Dr. Konyalian explained everything in detail, and the surgery and recovery was practically a breeze. I had these random, unidentifiable upper abdominal pains that would last for hours where no meds helped. I didn't know what caused them or how to manage the pain? My GI Dr. had me take a 1) blood test and 2) stomach ultrasound where he believed my gallbladder was acting up and referred me to Dr. Konyalian for surgery. I was apprehensive about any surgery unless it's absolutely necessary. However, it was the best decision ever! This review is long overdue but I can't rave enough about Dr. K and his office manager Patty. My mom had been dealing with excruciating pain and needed her gall bladder removed. After months of issues with other surgeons we found DR. K and boy are we glad we did. I literally called in on a Thursday and spoke to Patty who let me know they had a cancellation for the following Tuesday. Went to the surgery consult, Patty and DR. K are wonderful!!!! There first avail surgery date was 4 weeks out but because of moms pain they said they would work on it and let me know if something sooner opens up. The following day (Wednesday) we receive a call offering us an avail appt for Friday, yes 3 days after our consult. We graciously accepted and followed the doctors instructions for surgery day. I met Dr. Konyalian as an in patient at Los Alamitos Hospital. Gall bladder surgery was recommended but not emergent. I was discharged from the hospital and met him at his office for a pre surgery consult. He was thorough and explained the process and plan in a way that was easy to understand. On the day of the surgery, he met me ahead of time making sure I was comfortable with everything. It was a laparoscopic same day surgery. I was sent home with necessary prescriptions. In September 2021, I found myself in the Los Alamitos ER room with an abscess on my colon, that was when I was referred to Dr. Konyalian. I was scared to say the least. He assured me and my wife he could fix me, and I could live a normal life. I had to trust him, and I am glad I did. From pre-surgery to post-surgery, he took all necessary steps to assure my health and safety. He removed over 7" of my sigmoid colon. At times it was tough, but I feel great today. I checked myself into the hospital with severe abdominal pain on 12/28/22 and within 10 minutes of receiving my CT Scan results Dr. Konyalian came into the ER and spoke with me about the different courses of action and what each of them would entail. I decided to go through with the surgery and it was the best medical decision I have ever made! Dr. Konyalian took time to sit down with me and explain in great detail what he was going to do, he flawlessly performed my bowel resection surgery, and post operation he walked in my room EVERY single day to check in on me personally to see how I was doing! The process was so simple and so well-explained that I felt easy and comfortable throughout the whole ordeal which is literally all I wanted! Dr. Konyalian's office is absolutely amazing. Patty his front desk nurse is kind and very attentive. A smile on her face when you come in and compassion when she sees her patients in pain. Once I was called back to the exam room I was greeted by Dr.'s resident Med student. She was professional and her bed side manner was great. Very thorough and informative during the consultation. When she was done with the initial consult Dr. Konyalian entered and performed his examination. He concluded that I needed to have a gall bladder removal ASAP. I was a little apprehensive at first but he reassured me it was necessary and everything would turn out fine. Back out at the front desk Patty told me she would work closely with my UM department in order to get me scheduled promptly. By the end of the day I was called and told I would be having the surgery on Friday of the same week. I am now here post surgery very content with the entire process. Dr. Konyalian is one of the finest doctors I've ever met. He's an outstanding surgeon that goes the extra mile for your health. I don't believe there is a rude bone in his body. He's a true professional. I went to see him for hernia surgery. My surgery was 12 days ago and during my surgery, he found another hernia and repaired them. My first visit with him was very informative. I'm overweight and know it. He was so polite when he said, if I could lose between 5-10 lbs., it would make the surgery much better for me. His kindness gave me the initiative to not only lose 5-10 lbs.; I lost 14lbs. He said it would be great if I lost 20-25lbs. I told him that I would. I need to lose more, but I'm taking it a little bit at a time. Patty, his office assistant, is a blessing. Any time I called her or she called me, she was so kind, professional, and we would usually end the phone calls laughing about something silly she or I said. I had the worst experience with this doctor. I went to this office referred by my gastroenterologist for surgery. I went into this office with SEVERE pain and seeking help due to a biliary drainage that I had put in as a emergency measure due to a stone being stuck in my liver duct. The stone got removed but the specialist was not able to remove the drainage. My doctor referred me to this surgeon to see if he could help me as soon as possible since it was an EMERGENCY. This doctor without ever meeting me before just looked at me and told me he couldn't do anything until I lose some weight. He touched my stomach and said "yeah I am not going to work on you with that weight. I need you to lose 30 pounds or so in about 2 months". I then went on to explain that I am in SEVERE pain and he said " take tylenol". I explained tylenol was not helping and he said "well try ibuprofen". I told him worst case scenerio I'll go to the ER because I can't wait two months for surgery and he said "they won't work on you with that weight". He said he does hundreds of surgeries and he doesn't work with patients with my weight. I am overweight but I came into this office expecting help. He DID NOT help me at all. As a matter of fact on my way out he said "once you leave here go to the store and buy some shakes, I want to see you in a month and I expect for you to have lost 20 pounds". I understand that due to being overweight there are risks involved but I also know that there is a way to communicate with a patient. He was very rude and arrogant. I understand that he does hundreds of surgeries but please don't act like you are untouchable. I definitely had a really bad experience with his bedside manners. read more

Where do i Start? First visit too brief did not make me comfortable about asking questions, felt rush, then for surgery date doctor was late the staff an i were waiting for him basically on the surgery room, on the post surgery appt. there was a long wait even though i had an appointment i did not see anyone going inside the Dr's office so i asked the receptionist she informed me the dr. was having lunch! Then a few months after surgery i started experience all types of digestive disorders including: extreme pain and constipation, asked insurance to go back to dr. konyalian, to review and this was very problematic, I had to call his office he answered and told me to schedule in his lynwood office, i did that and lynwood told me call his new Los alamitos location so i did and finally went to see him, he told lift your shirt up, lie down, your stitches look good, you look ok, he never actually asked me about my pain inside my abdomen and my digestive promblems he just look at the stiches. Since the i have been in the ER. 2 GASTRO OFFICES, 2 SETS OF ultrasounds, XRays, 2 sets of Lab work, and other tests.... It's a year now and i never felt worse in my life! Anal pain, Hemorroids, constipation, and a excruciating burning pain, that does not go away and i was just told by my doctor not to take pain medicine since she is checking for liver blood work first. I totally regreat doing this surgery since i never had any of this problems before the surgery! read more

Going to the Dr. Is one of my least favorite activities. After having a horrific experience at the ER and a not so pleasant visit with another Dr., I found Dr. Konyalian for my gallbladder. I was very surprised that he answers the phone and personally calls to check in. He is personable and knows his stuff. He even provided his personal fax to receive my blood work from my regular Doctor. She was very impressed too. He is an excellent Surgeon and easy on the eyes. My incision points are smaller than some cat scratches I have! I probably won't have another reason to see him again, now that I am sans gallbladder, so that is a shame, not that I want to have any more surgery anytime soon! I was surprised that I was in much less pain immediately after the surgery than I was prior to. His office is clean and simple and his assistant is very sweet.
