The store is set up in two, although not perfectly distinct sections: vintage and antique items (genuine) and vintage-inspired/novelty items. While the latter might have made me like the place less it's so tastefully set up and the prices are so generally reasonable that I can't say boo. Additionally, having the two sections probably makes gift shopping (for your fave Kitsch lover) a dream. When I visited this weekend there was a big labour day sale- I spotted beautiful vintage Pyrex bowls for prices like $25. Obviously you could probably snag these kinds of things for cheaper if you combed through a Village des Valeurs, by why bother if these guys are going to dig up the good stuff? And in general it just didn't seem as inviting as other renaissance shops I've been to. But if you're willing to look through everything thoroughly, you will probably find gems. Retail price: $250 FPR price: $5 Le Creuset enameled cast iron frying pan, white, in near mint condition Retail price: $150 FPR price: $5 Azzedine Alaia sweater, navy blue, slightly used, no holes, no stains, Made in Italy, 100% wool Retail Price: $2000+ FPR price: $7 Aquascutum navy blue trench coat, never worn and still had the tags attached Made in Great Britain, 100% wool Retail price: $2000+ FPR price: $35 1960s/70s era Chrome General Electric, round tea kettle On ebay: $100 FPR price: $7 I have also found Italian Merino wool sweaters for $7, large heavy, metal decorative mirror in sunburst design $12, ceramic clay plant pots for 50 cents, 1970's Viking Blender for $7 with metal machine parts, not the stupid breakable plastic kind they have nowadays, home yogurt making machine, Depression-era glass goblets in ruby or cobalt blue, Calvin Klein and Banana Republic hoodies, giant snap-top jars for keeping dried foodstuffs for $1, complete book series of Harry Potter and A Song of Ice and Fire (Game of Thrones), foldable IKEA garden table $5 and a whole slew of other stuff. You get the idea. Mind you I didn't just stop in here once or twice and happen to get all this cool stuff. I walk by this place practically everyday on my way to the metro so I usually get in a chance to duck in and have a quick look around. That and having a trained eye towards quality goods will eventually land you something if you're persistent enough. I really dislike the disposable, throw-away aspect of our culture and there really is truth that one person's junk can be another person's treasure. Plus Fripe-Prix Renaissance's mission is about helping persons who are usually disadvantaged get some skills and build up the confidence to stand on their own. Shopping here is just a win-win situation for everybody.

I'm the kind of person who prefers to sift through thrift stores finding inexpensive gems rather than having things curated for me in 'vintage' spaces. Needless to say, I think the premium this place has people pay for used items so that they can be curated is absurd. Keeping in mind that there's several solid thrifting options in the area, I think this place is a bit much. When I consider better versions of this concept Kitsch à l'Os comes to mind- prices are reasonable, the merchandise is in better shape and the store is designed and decorated to reflect the curated value. Oh and the staff are cool there. This place really feels like a old timey flea market where you have the distinct sense of being fleeced for 'collector' items. I feel like at the very least, if you're going to charge people through the nose, create a space that doesn't feel like storage wars' extra junk being jammed into a warehouse. Basically, if you're really in a pinch to get vintage stuff fast in the Sud Ouest this place is an option. Otherwise I would avoid.

Middle of the road thrift store…read more On one hand they have really great selection. But, am I interested to pay 150$ for a vintage dress because it's vintage silk...Maybe not. If you are grossed out by places like "village des valeurs" and renaissances. It's a great place for you since all the good stuff is already skimmed out. In fact, there is a few stores like this one almost neighbouring each other so if you want the full experience. Look around on Saint-Laurent. This is a great place for a stop.

Cool vintage clothing store in the plateau with some very interesting items that are more edgy…read more Think the UK store All Saints mixed in with some rockabilly hipster items plus motorcycle wear (although not Harley) yet very street savvy. Very interesting to peruse the boutique as the do carry brands and many old nostalgia and vintage wear yet in a modern setting which is clean and well merchandised. I didn't grab anything on my visit but I want to come back as there are many cool pieces to spice up that wardrobe or add some flair to that closet of yours.

Local 23 recently moved to a new location a couple of blocks from the original, and while I will…read morealways mourn the never-ending charm of the Bernard spot, what with the fitting rooms made from a bathroom and a coat closet, the ceiling falling down and the floor coming up.... it was clearly necessary! The new space on Boulevard Saint-Laurent is gorgeous, and much easier to shop (as in no squatting down to look at racks) and has much more room in general. They've kept a few small elements of the old place (hilarious vintage decor) which I'm very happy about, because honestly, it was the second best part of the store! The quality of the vintage stock seems to have improved, in that the less interesting flimsy modern pieces are pretty much gone. Not much else has changed other than the name/branding ( Local x annex) -- they still do their 30% and 50% markdowns, and the pricing seems about the same. Hopefully the new store will have air conditioning in the summer!!
