They tried to manipulate us into making choices that disregarded our specified wishes, choosing their own interest's (selling at all costs) over ours. They badgered us via text, email and over the phone if they didn't like a decision we made. They bullied us and tried to pit us against each other and drive a wedge between us and our lawyer by giving misleading and conflicting accounts to each of us. He refused to act on our EXPLICIT wishes or take our decisions as final. Without our consent they contacted our lawyer and ran up HUNDREDS OF DOLLARS in lawyers fees even after we had specifically and repeatedly asked them not to contact him. They never apologized for any of that nor offered to cover the lawyer fees that he took the liberty to incur. They frequently presented even the most benign decisions with arbitrary time limits that he alone created (i.e. "You have 24 hours to..."). Yes, the house sold but I felt completely demoralized by the end of the process. I considered filing a complaint with the realtor's association, but I'd rather just erase the experience from my mind and move on with my life. House buying. It can be an intimidating process. Thankfully there are agents out there, like Jean-Paul Villere that can make it less-so. Let's start at the beginning. I never EVER thought I'd be a home owner. For starters, I'm from New York and not a millionaire so it kind of becomes ingrained in you that you'll likely never own an actual *house*. A condo, an apartment, maybe. For no less than 800K for a studio. Yah, you can keep it. I'm super cheap and never have in my life paid a lot for rent, so a future of renting seemed like not such a bad prospect. Add to the fact that I've been kind of a nomad the past 4 years (I've moved 6 times between three cities). Exactly a year ago, I saw a home-buying seminar hosted by Villere Realty on Yelp. As much as my free spirit might consider other cities here and there, I want my roots forever to be in New Orleans. And buying a house seems just the way to ensure that. I hadn't the first clue as to what the process even was. After an hour spent learning about it, thanks to Jean-Paul V, I decided the time had come to get moving on it. I signed up for his weekly emails listing properties and went to open houses. I even found a house I put an offer in on, but I was about a day too late and the house went to people who put an offer in before me. That was in early October. I decided to put off looking as I concentrated on saving and credit-building. How boring, right? My New Year's resolution was to buy a house and come this summer, I knew time was drawing nigh. I went on to a bunch of open houses in early July but I kept thinking about this house in my neighborhood that was up for sale. I love the Marigny and have always felt it was the neighborhood I wanted to live in. I wasn't sure the was right for me, but I figured I might as well look at it and Jean-Paul quickly made the arrangements with the selling agency. Now I'm going to make it simple because I don't want to drag y'all through the process with me: I saw, I liked, I offered (all through Echosign docs, yay for quick and convenient), it was accepted and a month later, the house is now mine (not without a lot of stress along the way - NOT thanks to JP, but the bank - with some minor annoyances thanks to, big shock here, the insurance companies). For the purpose of this review and why you should consider Villere Realty as your go-to when you're ready to buy a house: -incredibly prompt replies to all your emails and when necessary, a hop on a call quickly helped me to make decisions, etc. -appointments for inspections, closing, repairs etc--all easy peasy -I don't know if like me you're wary of slick real estate brokers, but Jean-Paul is not at all like that. He's easy to talk to, maintains a good sense of humor (really, this IS necessary), knows NOLA like the back of his hand so he can advise newcomers to the city VERY well, AND, during your final week of INSANE loan-related stress, he will talk you down from the ledge (full disclosure: yes, that was me). My review of this realty firm will be a little different from others. I own a double and last year I hired Jean-Paul as the leasing agent. For a reasonable price (a percentage of the first month's rent), he listed the unit on YouTube and I had a short-term renter within a month at a premium rent. He fielded inquiries, handled the application and interview process. Then ran a credit check on the applicant. He communicated with me throughout the process. Buying a first home is a very exciting part of life and at times and before meeting Jean-Paul I was a bit apprehensive. Jean-Paul helped ease me in to the search. When I first sat down with him, he gave me a run down of what to expect in today's market and what encounters that may occur along the journey. He advised me to go to as many open houses as I possibly could, even homes that maybe I wouldn't even be interested in. It turned out to be very valuable advice. It allowed me to get a grasp of what I was looking for. After looking at a number of houses, I was eager to dive head first and start making offers. The first offer I made was accepted and then it was on to home inpsections. It was found that there were many hidden issues with the home. Jean-Paul sensed I was timid and advised that I put on the brakes if it didn't feel right. Gratefully so. A few days later, he sent me the listing to the home I ended up purchasing and it has turned out to be a perfect fit, in a neighborhood that has great promise. The time came to find a new rental simultaneously for myself and two of my best, both of whom were ready (damned economy) like me to slip out of the solo-pad sanctity and combine our presidents for an easier, free-er, and more fitting to our combined lifestyles (zen-psychosis-insomniac-ergasioamenomania) housing arrangement. Of course, because we are timely if not geniuses, we decided this (or had it decided for us) just about a month into the school season, long after mommy and daddy deleted most of our price range and wants from the market for the (oh so blessed) university population. If any of our factors like price-range or bedroom number or desired neighborhood would have been different, or adjustable, the available apartment market would have been far vaster and easier to maneuver, but for us, (bah! and alas!) it was thick (like the gulf seafoam right now) and (also like the gulf seafoam right now) pickin's were slim (and chemical-ly). So after the (very necessary in this town) foot search and futile wading through puddles (i wrote piles first but they aren't that anymore) of dead medium classifieds (newsprint, i mean), it was time to call agents. Honestly, i called Villere first namely because of his small but actual Yelp presence, but also called three other agents with various agencies based on word of mouth references (like you do, usually.) Jean-Paul was (the only one who was actually) on that shit, and fast. While other agents did the requested (but not difficult and certainly rote) database search and even showed us a place or two, Villere not only found and showed us an option with wonderful potential (but alas was not the One), but proved by open candor and actual (human-relation based) knowledge on the property (and property owner) that all other agents we dealt with did not. He was rocking on the porch chair when we met, comfortable, and totally natural and painterly in that setting. That image is one that has stayed with me since then, and maybe because it was at that moment, walking up the steps to that porch, i could tell that he should be my friend. Pretty good start for a real estate agent. Better: a few days later we found another listing we wanted to see through another agent, one who takes special attention for people with pets (as i have an amazing doggie who was of course non-negotiiable- one of the things that made our hunt more difficult). So i called her but she was going to the Saints game in San Francisco, wouldn't be back till next week, etc. Of course i asked if she would mind if i looked at the property with another agent, no problem, and guess who i called? So... of course the listing was actually with a 3rd agency, not the one who sent it to me originally and of course not officially with the (un?)affiliated Villere. But Jean-Paul didn't flex or sweat, and he showed us the property (with the same gentle veracity, honesty, and awesomeness he displayed before), even enjoying our various eccentricities and diligent (anal and demanding) curiosity, participating actively in our thought processes and the dissemination of what we were finding. We went for it- but of course there were things to be discussed, concessions to be made on and agreed upon, and Mr. Villere worked for us and with is to get it all accomplished. Important to dwell upon is that this all unfolded rather easily despite our own (and the property owner's) complications, and Jean-Paul made it easy all the while showing just how important it is to employ the services of not only someone skilled and apt at what they do, but who also very clearly enjoys the progress and social aid they bring to the community they are essentially helping shape and mold. While the other agents we talked to and employed were certainly of the former category, Jean-Paul is definitively ahead of the curve in the latter. (Quick side note: i think maybe the pet lady might have potential, but being eschewed two days before travel for preparation for football while knowing the expressed urgency of our request dropped her from the list. Very generous of her to pass off the commission, however.) Villere Realty operates in Real-time. Jean-Paul texted, emailed, called, smoke signaled (not really), and waved seaman's flags (that woulda been sweet) in constant communication every step of the way. Other agents sent an email, maybe, to follow up on disappointment, but little else. Villere went the extra mile, cared and built a relationship with me and my roommates, and (if by no other demonstration than this very long yelp review) impressed upon me yet again the difference that the heart and soul of New Orleans makes upon any and every action and relationship it is allowed to manifest in. I made an initial call to this guy and asked him to call me back. I wanted to talk to him to see if I liked him, if I would trust him to help me with such a big purchase, and if I wanted to work with him. Instead of calling me back, he TEXTED me back asking how he could help me. (Um, I want to buy a house?) I texted him back telling him that his "return text" told me he wasn't the right agent for me and wished him luck. (He said he had sleeping toddlers. Not sure why he didn't go in the other room, or else call when he was free.) I am taking my business (and any potential referrals) elsewhere. EDIT: This realtor posted a blog about the exchange. EXCEPT that he changed a couple of the facts to favor himself including that I left a voicemail saying, "..at the very least you have to call me back". (Who would say something like that?) I have been told that I speak fast on voicemail so he must have misunderstood me. I mentioned to him that I was only in town that day and the next day and realized he probably couldn't show me houses with such little notice so I probably added, "but at the very least, if you could call me back, that'd be great". He admits he was wrong to reply to a voicemail with a text but then tries to defend himself by making up "facts". If you want to trust one of the biggest purchases of your life to someone who is immature, has poor judgment ("I have sleeping toddlers - how do I handle returning a phone call??") and who might then breach your trust by blogging about his interaction with you, feel free to work with him. read more

Did not end up going with a property from him only because I was under the gun to make a decision, but he still sent me an email to ask where I had decided and to wish me luck. This was our first experience buying a home, so I don't have much to compare my experience to, but Jean-Paul was so incredibly patient, and responded on a dime to our calls, emails, questions, etc. He aided us in the process of offering and closing making the experience as smooth as can be.
