It's hard not to give this small, unpretentious gem five stars. First of all, you will not find a more hospitable restaurant anywhere in the world. I mean that. This is a down-to-earth, casual, cozy bistro. Positive energy abounds. The question I have is why it's rated by some pubs as the best restaurant in Canada and fifth best in North America by the NY Times. It's not that it's undeserving of accolades, but it may or not be the best restaurant in Montreal. One could argue. Enjoyed both pastas, chicken liver mousse with radishes and fried chicken, and asparagus salad. The halibut was the only disappointment. It was a bit bland and the sauce failed to elevate it. Came with my husband to celebrate our wedding anniversary. We got a bottle of wine, the parfait de foie (10/10), the scallop sandwich (10/10), the duck (10/10) and the leek filled with ricotta and truffle. But after dining here, I can say with absolute certainty that the title is well deserved. We had three appetizers and two mains, as suggested by our waitress based on two people dining. Mon Lapin was a great experience - food, ambiance and service were fantastic. The atmosphere inside is casual and the service is friendly. If you don't speak French, be sure to ask the staff to explain the menu items. They can also help choose wine pairings or dishes for your table. The menu is seasonal but there are some items that are usually on the menu: - Scallop Sandwich / Le croque-pentoncle, rouille classique ($17) - Leeks with potato chips / conserve de poireaux comme des moules ($16) - Buckwheat Cake (dessert) I definitely recommend the scallop sandwich. Of the dishes, I enjoyed the lighter dishes at Mon Lapin, and I found the meat dishes and dessert to be on the heavier side. For example, the leeks and potato chips were great, as was the razor clams that we got. I personally found the chicken to be quite heavy and the buckwheat cake was a bit on the sweet side for me. The flavors are still really good, however. Reservations can be hard to get, but this is definitely a place worth visiting! We were lucky to lock in a reservation at 8:30 pm and we were seated within 15 minutes of arriving. The restaurant was packed! The hostess was very sweet and checked in with us often. Once we sat down, our server came by to explain the whole menu to us which was very nice as everything was in French. I started with a sea urchin and my goodness this is one of the best uni I've every had. So sweet and fresh. Then my mom and I shared a Scallop Sandwich appetizer. It was so bouncy and tasty. Like a mochi consistency between buttery toast. For mains, we got the lobster pasta and it was heavenly. Light sauce but rich flavor and lots of meat. The deconstructed duck leg was a little disappointing. The meat was cooked medium rare but it was very chewy and tendon filled. The skin was crispy but also very tough to chew. The flavor was tangy and savory but the overall difficulty eating the dish threw off the experience. We ended on a sweet note with the buckwheat cake and it is beautifully presented. Chosen as Canada's best restaurant, Mon Lapin was a huge let down. One caveat, the temperature in Montreal was hot and humid, 93 degrees, and Mon Lapin was full. Our decision to sit at the bar facing the kitchen was stupide, because it was hot. Everyone at the restaurant was lovely, but we were miserable nonetheless. Our hope relied on the food, but the dishes did nothing to lift us out of the inferno. Sticking to a seafood theme, we chose to start with the scallop sandwich and the raw scallops from the Iles de Madeleine. Mon Lapin holds onto a small plates concept. Everything is to share. Both scallop dishes were refreshing but nothing more. For entrees, we chose poached Halibut and marinated white asparagus with lobster. The Halibut was the star of the evening, but that star isn't getting a review in Variety. In fact, our comped tiny Cannolis tasted best of all. While service at Mon Lapin was well-meaning, they were all running around frenetically. It was akin to an ADHD convention. Mon Lapin is a casual joint, and the staff goes out of their way to let you know they're down to earth, but it seemed like they were trying to go Around that World in Eighty Days. Mon Lapin has an extensive and eclectic wine list and would fair better as a wine bar that serves good food. No, Mon Lapin is not Canada's number one restaurant. Title of best restaurant in Montreal is very well deserved. Every dish was excellent - a perfect balance of rich yet subtle flavors. Our favorite was the Chicken Liver parfait with fresh vegetables. It was so creamy and light we had to ask if it wasn't fois gras. My husband and I had very nice white and red natural wine and we loved the Fukuoka sake. The gem of the night though was our server Fiona. She was so knowledgeable and passionate about all the dishes, it made us want to try everything but she made sure to tell us the right number of dishes to order. There was a mix up with the kitchen and they ran out of the chicken dish so she went out of her way to make sure we were happy with our replacement dish and gave us extra free dessert. It's easy to see why this place is popular among those in the hospitality industry: inventive, delicious food that tries intriguing things in an unstuffy atmosphere. The signature scallop croquet sandwich was rich and delicious, it was fine with or without the Dijon mustard. The white asparagus was so fresh. The sourdough encrusted chicken was novel and delicious. The revelation was a chocolate torte dessert topped with a chartreuse-coffee cream that managed to identify a combination I never knew I needed in my life, but now I do. The staff were well trained, knowledgeable and pleasant. They're also a bit stretched so it wasn't quite the personal feel at some of the other places I tried that were a bit more formal. It feels like an exceptional neighborhood restaurant where you're a visitor (assuming regulars aren't reading this)--just not quite as at home as other places. The staff wasn't as welcoming as the best, that's a management issue. The wine selections were well paired and enjoyable. I made a horrible mistake at the end and ordered a cocktail. The rum cocktail I ordered may be one of the strangest disasters I've ever tasted. I've tried probably every rum cocktail under the sun. I have no idea what they mixed or why someone thought it was a good idea, it was putrid heat with no payoff. Stick to wine. It was a great experience, just short of the best I've seen in Montreal. My husband and I were hoping to eat at Joe Beef again on our recent trip to Montreal; however, we could not secure a reservation. That was when I stumbled upon Vin Mon Lapin, a restaurant that is also part of the Joe Beef Group and one of the top 50 restaurants in Montreal right now. I was ecstatic to find two openings for a Saturday night, one for 5pm and one close to 10pm. I snagged the 5pm slot immediately. We arrived that Saturday a little after 5pm and were seated immediately. We looked at the menu. It was limited and was entirely in French. Neither my husband nor I can read French so we quickly downloaded an app on our phones to help translate the menu which did a good enough job for us to understand what is on the menu. But even if we didn't have the app, most if not all the people working at the restaurant were bilingual and there were staff members stopping by tables to assist and translate the menu for other non-French speakers like us. The restaurant constantly changes their menu to feature Quebec's freshest ingredients, which is why the menu is limited and you will not find a menu on their website. Vin Mon Lapin has a large selection of natural wines, so we asked our server, Kevin to provide some recommendations. We told Kevin our preferences, and he came back with 3 bottles of wine he selected. For each wine, he talked about the wine region, terroir, grape varietal, and taste with so much knowledge and detail. The restaurant did not have a sommelier, but Kevin may as well be one. We decided to go with one of the 3 wines Kevin recommended -- a juicy Spanish Mencia. As for food, we ordered a snow crab and bone marrow dish, a daily special, and the calf tartare to start. Unfortunately, the snow crab tasted kind of flavorless. The star of the dish was really the toast that came with the bone marrow. It was just two bite size pieces of toast with the most delicious spread on it. I would have loved to eat more of that. We also had the calf tartare, with anchovies and nettle, served on top of a green, also nettle? sauce. The calf tartare was easily one of my favorite dishes of the night. It was very balanced. The anchovies and capers provided the dish with enough saltiness and the anchovies weren't fishy. The green nettle sauce under the tartare had the perfect amount of acidity to round out the tartare. After each course, our table would be wiped down, and we'd get a clean set of utensils. For our mains, my husband and I shared the Strozzapreti pasta with cod sauce, the Pork cheek with beans, and half of the Sourdough free-range chicken. The Strozzapreti was an okay pasta. The pork cheek and the sourdough free-range chicken were absolutely delicious. Highly recommended. After all that food and wine, we were so full. We had no room for dessert. Overall, my husband and I enjoyed ourselves at Vin Mon Lapin. I have to say I'm glad to have been able to check out Vin Mon Lapin on this trip to Montreal. read more

Crispy scallop croques were bolder in flavour especially when dipped in a green aioli sauce. This was followed by homemade tagliatelle pasta with whelk & diced fresh garlic. Staff kindly served our mains as shareable dishes so we could all enjoy the bouncy al-dente pasta. Moist & buttery halibut arrived topped by aromatic nettle leaves, and were delicious with the herb-based cream. The most curious dish was the green asparagus with lobster, which our server assured included lobster underneath the greens. Sure enough, sweet lobster meat mixed well in the chopped asparagus salad. I think an expectation has to be placed for this restaurant. Deemed #1 restaurant in Canada, but it should have the expectation of elevated neighborhood bistro. There were some hits and some misses in our light dinner. Misses: -Tartare we found too salty with sardines, capers and added salt - it should come with bread, and the bitterness of the dandelion greens wasn't enough to balance the salinity. -Eggplant and cantaloupe was just fine, nothing really interesting other than plating. Highlights: -Sourdough chicken was delicious and comforting umami flavors -Crispy scallop toastie in a Japanese fish cake style with the creamy dipping sauce was very good -Stewed tomatoes, plum, and micro shiso were pretty good - flavors reminded me of a chinese beef and tomato dish -Peach dessert with the liquor near the Lyon region of France was delicious-- I liked the salt in that it made the dessert not too sweet. Prices were very reasonable for the food quality, but I was a but surprised at the price of cocktails. No cocktail list of prices, and only told verbally by the waiter. Honestly I think that such high praise almost does a disservice to a restaurant because they have to live up to that mark with every dish and every service. I can't personally judge if this is the best restaurant in Canada, but what I can say is that I very much enjoyed it. We started with leeks, cold carrots, and the scallop sando, which I can honestly say was one of the best courses of food I've had anywhere. I think it might be the best in the country. Food. Wine. Service. Vibe. All of these are top of the line. But let's start with food. Their menu changes a bunch, as it does at all the great restos. The food is always an incredible mix of comforting and innovative. It's eclectic and Italian-inspired. And cooked perfectly. Given the perfection of the service (more on that later), we were comfortable handing ourselves over to our server's recommendations, and she delivered. A stunning sea urchin dish started us off, followed by razor clams that actually had flavour and texture, which has been rare in my experience. Next was the croque scallops, which I was not expecting. It's hard to describe this dish in a way that doesn't seem gross. Perfectly toasted bread sandwich sliced scallop, serviced with this incredible herb mayonnaise. The chefs at Mon Lapin just barfed reading this. Look tbh I don't know what to say other than this dish actually made me cry a little. It was delicious and homey and challenging, and it's the newest staple of this amazing resto. Get it. I love actually daydreamed about some sort of food service award program, and her taking first place. Let me break it down so you don't think I'm creepy: Tanya can tell you the name of the farmers who made the produce on your plate. Tanya can tell you about the family who created the wine glasses you're drinking from. She can tell you what is special about every dish, and veer you away from ones you might not like based on your taste (not because they aren't good). Tanya knows every wine on the list and can describe them in the most clear ways- or just get you a sample. She can put together the best meal you've had, and serve it with a genuine kindness and enthusiasm. She can manage a super busy section, and when you look around, you can see how much every table appreciates her. Tanya remembered my partner and I from the one time we had been there a year before. She remember what table we sat at, where we're from, and what we do for a living. Talk about creating a loyalty in the clientele that will last FOREVER. Ok, enough about Tanya. I swear I'm not in love with her. I'm super gay. I could go on about Mon Lapin, but you just have to go. It's incredibly special. It's bustling and cozy and fun.
