I was really excited to try Cadet because it was a Michelin recommended restaurant but unfortunately the food was not as expected. The restaurant had a vibrant vibe and minimalist. The service was friendly but they seemed short staffed that night. We were trying to refill our water glasses but it took a while since I couldn't find any waiter or waitress around. Now let's start with the food: Focaccia: 5/5 bread was warm, toasty and tasty but the dip was the highlight Leeks with smoked mackerel, mustard, tobikko: (2.5/5) too creamy with a hint of mackerel and leeks Calamari chou-fleur, asian pear, chili beurre blanc: (2/5) very soupy and too much cream and not flavorful Black cod miso sauce, daikon, kale: (2.5/5) cod was tender but my bite had too much miso on it. It was extremely salty and not well balanced Beef tartare with mushrooms, Asiago: (1/5) mushy texture and way too much Asiago cheese. THIS WAS AMAZING. food here was flawless, every dish was absolutely perfect and creative. the ingredients are top shelf quality and put together with tons of care. I had the most amazing meal here. Genuinely the BEST beef tartare i've ever had in my life, it was chopped perfectly and flavor wise just absolute perfection. Rich, cheesy but still fresh and the beef flavor was present and well seasoned. Focaccia was great as well, the grill flavor really stuck with me and was a perfect touch of crunch and flavor. I enjoyed my leeks as well, i've never had them prepared this way so it was a unique touch. Their cocktails were good with some nice twists on classics, I got the oolong old fashion which was a pretty classic old fashion with a slight tea after taste. the highlight of the meal though was the desert . it was brûlée bananas with a chocolate cheesecake and omg that was the best touch to the meal ever. we got the wine pairing with it as well and they went together like bread and butter. the wine was sweet but had a fruitier taste to counteract the richness of the banana and chocolate. it was the most delightful experience and wasn't a bank breaker either. service here was attentive and amazing, extremely friendly and informative. the ambiance was on the fancier side, with darker lighting. during my time in montreal, this restaurant easily took home my favorite. read more

Another great spot to check out in Montreal. The service was friendly and smooth from start to finish, and the food overall was solid. It was a delicious meal with some really fun flavour combinations. You can tell they're going for something a bit more creative and experimental with their menu, which I appreciate. It is no easy feat to narrow down all restaurant options in Montreal to just one, especially if you suffer from FOMO as severe as mine. We were only in town for one night, and of course I did a dizzying amount of research to identify the spots that appeared to meet the criteria we were looking for. I thought I had come close to making a decision when I noticed that every single place I was considered was closed on Sundays. Though initially disappointing, this made the deliberation process a whole lot easier, ultimately leading us to make a reservation at Cadet. What followed was a dining experience that was exceptional in all areas -- great service, refined cocktails, an impressive wine list, and food that was creative, flavorful, and flawlessly executed. Easy to see why it received a Michelin Bib Gourmand designation this year! We arrived Cadet at around 8:30pm on a Sunday night. It was packed, and I initially suspected that this was because it was one of the few places open. I am less sure of this in hindsight, because Cadet is a formidable dining destination regardless of how many other restaurants it has to compete with. In any case, the busyness made for a lively atmosphere. For drinks, we started off with a round of cocktails, of which Cadet has both signatures and classics. One of my very favorite classic cocktails is the Bijou, so I was thrilled to see it featured as one of the classic options on this menu. I'm not sure if was the specs or ingredients used, but this was easily one of the best Bijou iterations I've ever had. My partner, who enjoys them too, concurred that it was excellent. We then shifted to wine, as I had read great things beforehand about the wine program here. This is niche, but I was also thrilled to see that Cadet listed not one but TWO different Furmints in its selection of white wines by the glass. Furmint, a Hungarian grape variety, is one of my very favorite wines, yet many people have never heard of it. Our server (who was awesome throughout, shoutout to her) offered me a taste of both, and while both were excellent, I went with the blend because it had a bit more character, which was what I was looking for. My partner tried the one orange wine offered by the glass, which was also great. Food-wise, Cadet offers a tapas-style menu, in that all plates are meant to be shared. As I say in pretty much all of my reviews, my partner and I order to share pretty much every time we go out, so all the better when the design caters to this approach. I would say it's pretty hard to go wrong here, as everything we had was somewhere on the great to outstanding continuum. Eats, below: Leeks, mackerel, mustard, tobiko, smoked eel: A+ Upon first bite, it was immediately obvious why this dish is a fan favorite. As delicious as it is unique, this dish is just a masterpiece. So many flavors working together and it all just works. Hamachi, kumquat, daikon, shimeji, chili: A Fresh and bright, a great complement to some of the richer dishes we ordered. Beautifully presented with delicate flavors that elevated the fish. Oyster mushrooms, Flower of the Mountains, pear: A+ I would never think to pair oyster mushrooms and pear together, but here we are. Yet again, an example of a surprising and creative concept that hits all the right notes. Black cod, creamy mushroom and miso sauce, daikon: A+ This was executed perfectly. I absolutely love black cod and dishes like this celebrate it the way it's meant to be celebrated. The sear on the fish was perfection, the flavors were savory and rich, just beyond delicious. Long story short: 50/50 food "wow" factor, as some menu items were a little "meh", but chill vibes and great service. Long story long: I really wanted to try Cadet, a "bib gourmand" Michelin guide restaurant, and I'd say it was an overall good experience, just a bit bland with some of their dishes. To start, we ordered the Betteraves (beets), which was delicious and balanced with the goat cheese, as well as Brocoli, which was actually a mini mac and cheese dish with about 3 broccolis in it - honestly nothing to write about. It was very bland and seemed fit for a kids menu. Finally, we had Calmars (grilled squid), which was probably the best thing we ate. Really delicious and fresh ingredients. For our main, we shared the lamb skewers. I know my kebabs, so the meat was a bit dry and didn't really have any "wow" factor. We also had the champignons farcis (stuffed mushrooms), which was delicious, soft and rich - a good one. The service was wonderful and attentive. The atmosphere was lovely, though dimly lit, to which I can attest because my parents had to turn on their phone flashlights or drag the candle a little closer to the menu. Ahaha Overall, the experience was 50/50 food-wise, sometimes it didn't quite display that "bib gourmand" label. I would certainly give it another try, trying other menu items. read more

Our final meal for the '24 GP trip out to Montreal and it was probably the best meal we had the past 4 nights. Cadet came recommended by a friend's cousin who lives in Montreal. Made reservations early on but was a bit worried about timing as I knew it was going to be a PITA getting off the track on race day. Walked in a few minutes before our 8pm reservation only to find the place packed. We were seated a few minutes later and browsed the menu after ordering our cocktails. Our waitress was friendly and provided some solid recommendations. Focaccia - I don't recall the bread being warm but damn was the spicy oil epic! So good we had to request a second helping to finish the bread. Lobster roll - this was decent but wished I had some Old Bay to season it a bit more. Cauliflower - perfectly fried to a golden brown but honestly wasn't super memorable as I don't recall what the sauce tasted like. Calamari - perfectly cooked calamari but did think the beurre blanc sauce tasted a bit too sweet for my liking. Cauliflower - quite enjoyed this dish as the cauliflower's seasoning paired well with the tahini sauce. Sort of reminded me of the cauliflower dish at Bavel which we love! Beef tartare - well seasoned chunks of beef which was good. Wished we had crostinis or some sort of cracker to go with it. Oyster mushrooms - another well seasoned and tasty dish. Bread pudding - decent but preferred the chocolate tart. Perhaps I wasn't a fan of the sour ice cream? Chocolate tart - super rich and was the best dessert we tried this meal. Ended up playing rock, paper, scissors for the last bite. They have an extensive wine list and their cocktails were good. Lovely tapas restaurant in Montreal. We went early to avoid rush, barely snagged a table. Ordered fennel salad, focaccia, beef tartare, and few other dishes. All were done impressively . Despite the small sizes, we were full after and could not eat any more. It's a romantic darkened intimate setting, perfect for a night out with someone special. Tried one of the IPAs on their list, loved it. Wine menu was full. Asked waiter about the food, they shared that original chef was Korean (I saw a number of Korean influences in dishes) then followed by others who added their signature to the menu. If you rather not read the dawn-of-time review, here is an under-50-word summary: Everything I had was a Masterclass in what dining and food should be. A case where I say: "Bring all your friends and order everything!" Six stars, three thumbs up, and someone call the Michelin guide, and the Bridgestone and Goodyear to boot. I think we all have had that one college professor or school teacher who'd always find SOMETHING! You'd put into a project more effort than you thought possible. There were tears, sweat, hours of lost sleep, and more tears (hopefully not blood). You'd complete it and triumphantly present it. It was a crowning academic achievement. You thought so, the professor thought so, and so did the whole class, including people that don't even like you. You get back your grade, and it's 97.4%. Somewhere along the way, you transposed a syllable, which somehow costs 2.6%. I am that professor when it comes to dining; I almost always find that "something." While Yelp doesn't operate on tenths of a percent, it is guaranteed to be mentioned somewhere in my gigantic review. Yet, this is one of those exceedingly rare cases where I have nothing resembling negative feedback or suggestions for improvement. Absolute and total perfection. I've not had a meal this phenomenal since visiting Girl & The Goat in Chicago eight months ago. I had the opportunity to try (forgive me, I do not remember the full French names): - Rum Mule - Fennel - Scallops - Calamari - Panna Cotta Rum Mule: This drink had some bite and good booziness. I loved the gentle sweetness bestowed by the ginger and the mild tartness. A fantastic, refreshing cocktail I loved to savor. Fennel: This was salad perfection! All of the veggies were at the peak of freshness and dressed perfectly. It had a beautiful blend of textures and flavors! It had loads of crispness from the greens and cashews and was nicely rounded by the berries and mandarin. Finally, the salad had something sweet and creamy, and I am 100% here for it. This is more colorful and flavorful than a photo can ever convey, and you should absolutely get it. Scallops: I have a confession - as much as I love sushi, I am not the biggest seafood fan. However, these scallops were something else in the best possible way. I don't know what made me order these, but I am beyond glad I did. Unexpectedly, they are serviced cold, but it just works! They're marinated with something containing light salt and acid that fabulously compliments the scallops without overpowering them. Next, they are seasoned with something that adds a bit of crunch for an excellent contrast of textures. Further, from somewhere in the dish is a divine sweetness and heat (that I think comes from somewhere other than the jalapeno rounds). Rounding out the plate are condiments of a terrific tomatillo salsa that adds a beautiful freshness. Finally, there is also a creamy condiment that works great with everything else. While it seems there is every flavor under the sun in these scallops, nothing overpowers anything else, and they work together like a precision-engineered machine. Calamari: I started this dish by tasting the sauce on the edge of my spoon. I smiled from ear to ear as soon as it hit my taste buds (no hyperbole; I'm serious). It was warm and highly vibrant, and savory. Once the squid was all gone, I went at the sauce as if it were soup! The squid itself was cooked to perfection and not at all rubbery. The veggies are tasty and added tastefully. The marinated pearl onions added crunch and sweetness, and the greens added peppery notes. The veggies are also very lightly dressed, so they're not lying naked on the plate. Panna Cotta: Like the rest of the plates, a fabulously assembled, stupendously elevated dish. The Panna Cotta itself is very creamy and flavorful. It is served with sherbet and what seems like orange Jell-O that work wonderfully together. They added sweet and tart flavors, contrasting textures, and even different temperatures. The Panna Cotta is rounded out with a sprinkle of granola and what I think are meringue chips (smaller versions of what some European-style cakes are topped with). These both add a gentle sweetness, some crunch, and even some earthy notes from the granola. Vibe: Upscale, lively, and I'd even go so far as to call it intimate, yet not pretentious. Service: The staff did an excellent job taking care of me. They were attentive, kind, and cheerful. The food came out fast, and the bar servers ensured I was happy. This was an aggressively disappointing meal. The pro's: One of the few nicer restaurants open on a Monday, they were able to fit me in a little earlier than my reservation, and decent wine. The not so good: The food was just below par for every dish here. One huge red flag to me was that items came out almost within a minute or two after ordering, meaning dishes didn't seem to be made fresh to order. All of my dishes came to me lukewarm. The scallion pancake with snow crab was the one "okay" item but it was topped with a sauce that should have been a bit spicy and was decidedly not, and had iceberg lettuce. Why oh why would you ever top such a beautiful ingredient like fresh snow crab with iceberg lettuce is beyond me. Per the server's recommendation, I got the focaccia with spice oil and the grilled calamari with lobster sauce. The calamari dish was lukewarm, far too rich, and the calamari overly chewy (ie likely reheated when served to me.) The spice oil with the focaccia was completely cold and not spicy at all; the focaccia itself was barely warm and too cheesy. I had maybe 1 piece of 4. Dessert was the most passable dish but still disappointing: lemon yuzu ganache was overly acidic (ironic because there was absolutely no acid notes on any other dish) but had a nice meringue topping and a beautiful presentation. Service was okay but they say a very large group directly behind me so servers and patrons kept bumping into my chair. The restaurant was not very crowded and they could have sat me further away from where they intended to sit a large table. It was very uncomfortable and made me hasten to just get out of there. This was my first meal in Montreal and this restaurant just truly left me regretting even making the trip (luckily other restaurants redeemed that.) read more

Had a delicious first dinner in Montreal here. My colleagues and I shared a few small plates and then got our own main courses. We made a reservation a week in advance, since we were travelling and didn't know how busy it would be. It seemed fairly busy when we arrived on a Sunday night. We ordered: Focaccia 4/5 Fingerling Potatoes 5/5 Broccoli 5/5 (not a lot of broccoli in this but the combination is delicious) Eggplant hummus with pita 4/5 I got the lamb chops with Caesar salad (5/5) as my main course, and it was very good. I also had a very tasty and well presented mocktail, which I ordered two of. There was a bit of a miscommunication and the wait seemed long for our main courses, but apparently they were waiting for us to finish our small plates first, so it was partly our mistake - but something to keep in mind if you go here! Unique and beautifully presented, I highly recommend the calamari (that sauce is out of this world!), beet salad (so refreshing), asparagus (perfectly cooked) and lobster roll. Hostess is efficient and helpful and the service was excellent. They quickly fixed an error with our order (it was a busy night) and was prompt with offering help. I can't believe I only discovered this gem of a restaurant this year! Cadet is a sister restaurant to Bouillon Bilk (slightly friendlier to the wallet) with a diverse, innovative and well thought out tapas menu. I loved this restaurant all for the excellent food, drinks, service and the ambiance so much that I returned twice in the span of two weeks! Both times I went, we were a table of two and shared between 5-6 small items to share from the menu. Though I am sure the menu changes constantly, I highly recommend their cod croquettes, the veal cheeks as well as the beef tartare. The trout was excellent too! The wine selection is also quite lovely and not too expensive. I can't wait for restaurants to re-open their dining rooms so I can bring more friends back to Cadet to try. We sat at the bar which I always prefer and recommend here in particular. The seats were very comfortable and I think we had more space than the tables. My bf had the bananavardier which didn't sound good but was delicious and well balanced (and didn't taste of banana). I had an excellent glass of Portuguese red which had a really nice oak taste. We ordered several small plates to share: burrata, eggplant, broccoli, black cod and lobster. It was too much food to be honest. The absolute standouts were the eggplant and lobster. The eggplant had a crunchy topping with chilies and was sitting on tahini. It was curseworthy, that's how good that bite was. The lobster too was a generous portion in a curry that was outrageously tasty. The black cod was good too but that lobster just blew us away. The broccoli was an odd combination. It was the only one that didn't meet the level of cooking or inventiveness of the other dishes. The burrata was tasty with a pistachio pesto and the most delicious melon. This restaurant is owned by the same owner as Bouillon Bilk. Let me preface this review by saying that Bouillon Bilk sits in a class apart- very few restaurants rival it. Thus, Cadet, though it boasts some amazing flavourful foods, does not compare to the five stars of its sister restaurant. We ordered many dishes that are meant to be shared, such as oysters, artichoke salad, focaccia bread with spicy sauce, beef tartare, halloumi salad, and scallop ceviche. Everything was flavourful, and the standout for me was the artichoke salad! To finish, I had the bread pudding! It was amazing. Also, the pineapple cocktail was great as well. The look of the restaurant is trendy and modern. Service was very personable and they have English menus, which is wonderful to see. Very few restaurants are open on Sunday night in Montreal, so this is a good bet! read more

I am really impressed with Cadet's takeout during the covid-19 crisis. Ordering is through bouillon bilk and pick up is at Cadet. Each dish takes under 5 minutes to prepare and comes with instructions. Although their menu doesn't mentioned allergies, alot of their dishes can be made gluten free, just ask when you call to place an order. As entrees we ordered the boeuf saisi and crabe dishes. The beef was so we'll prepared and I loved the soy vinaigrette that came with it. The crabe was lovely, it was already shelled for you and served with a simple salad so that the crabe remained the star of the dish. From the marché section we ordered the foccacia and lobster bisque. I would highly recommend ordering these dishes! The lobster bisque was delicious and only cost $15 for 1L !!?? The focaccia is incredible, I wish I could just eat Cadet's focaccia all day long! For sides, we ordered the broccoli spaetzle. You just have to try it up quickly in a pan. It's served with a sort of ranch sauce and was delicious. I've already ordered takeout twice from Cadet, highly recommend you give it a try! read more

Service was great! I tried the broccoli dish and the oyster mushrooms. Both were great, but I preferred the broccoli dish more. It was a busy night but it did not feel crowded. I sat at the bar and the bartender was very attentive m got some good wine recommendations as well! Would return. read more

Came for a late night dinner around 10p on a Sunday night. It's incredible and very convenient for us tourists to have nice dinner places like this that are open so late! Since I was on the mend from a bout of food poisoning we ordered only a few dishes to share -octopus, cod croquettes, fluke ceviche, watercress salad, and beef tartare. I enjoyed all the dishes despite my stomach troubles. The cocktails were also very yummy - we had the last word and an old fashioned, both nicely made (not too sweet and with a good kick of alkie just how we like it). Sister restaurant to Bouillon Bilk but not quite comparable. This is more like tapas style...small dishes to share. The decor is elegant and classy and the bar area with all the wines in display is pretty impressive! Went there for lunch time with a customer and we order 3 dishes to share. The crab salad was delicious, cauliflower was a bit too overpowering with all the seasoning on it. The short ribs were tender but kinda tasted like the cauliflower which was a bit disappointing. Service was friendly as expected from a restaurant of this class. It is on the expensive side but if you are going there for business than it's fine. If you need to choose between this and It's sister restaurant, go to Bouillon Bilk. Not bad overall. read more
