I had a coworker of Dutch descent who would always bring prepackaged stroopwaffles to work. He…read morewould drop a few off on our desks and for him, they were the best things in the world. For me, they were some kind of strange thin crispy cracker with a layer of caramel. Nothing great. So when I saw this "freshly made" stroopwaffle store I had to stop in and see if I was really missing something. Yes, yes I was. These are downright delicious. They make them on the spot and you get it warm with the center slightly gooey. It's nothing short of amazing. I ate mine and most of another one my friend didn't want to finish (not that she didn't love it - she's trying to stay away from sugar). It's a good thing I don't live in Amsterdam as I would want to stop here all the time. I apologized to my Dutch friend and shared that I was a convert. He heartily agrees fresh made are best. If you're near, go get one... or two!

Can't come to Amsterdam and not have the stroopwafels! My boyfriend and I had to try and it did not…read moredisappoint! We ordered a fresh stroopwafel with strawberries and it was incredible. Service was very quick considering it's fresh! The stroopwafel was perfectly crisp on the outside, soft and chewy in the middle, with warm, gooey caramel that paired so well with the fresh strawberries. The combination was simple but the quality of the ingredients are top notch.

A surprisingly good bakery despite being in the touristy Red Light District. Most everything I…read moretried was delicious. Though the fruit-heavy pastries were especially good. Chocolate Croissant: A very unique chocolate croissant since it was actually dipped in a rich dark chocolate. Still the same buttery flaky croissant texture underneath, which you'd expect. And I think there was a little chocolate inside too. High recommend for any chocolate lover. Timmetje: Tasted like olive bread with a lot of crisped cheese on top. Very savory. Since I bought so many sweets, this was a nice counterpoint. Appel Rozijn: Seemed like a fluffy bun with a little bit of raisins and a little bit of apple. Not that sweet. Also, not that flavorful, kinda bland. Appel Tartlettes: Meanwhile, this one is loaded with apple bits and nuts! All resting in a buttery pastry nest. Loved the intense fruit onslaught. Frambozen Pecan: I've had a lot of dessert bars in my day, but never raspberry and pecan. The flavors worked very well together. Sweet, slightly tart, a little meaty from the pecans. And the base underneath was a bit neutral to help the focus stay on the raspberry. I devoured this one very quickly.

Get the Apple Turnover (Appelflap)!!! Ideally, get it as early as you can while they're still warm…read more You will be be catapulted into Food Heaven for Foodies who know their stuff!! The Apple Turnover is so worth it, calorically, monetarily, and whatever time it takes you to get here. It really is that good! I've gotten it 5 days out of 6 since we've been in Amsterdam. I can't say enough about how perfectly flaky this pastry is, and ooh those little bits of sugar atop really top it off! You can hear the crunch of every flaky layer as you bite into this. Also, just enough apples inside without overwhelming it. This is exactly like the quality of pastries I've had all over France, but never get anywhere in the entire the Bay Area, with the exception of the Kouign Amann at B. patisserie in SF. I stumbled on this bakery while wandering this popular street, which by the way has quite a few Asian restaurants, as it's nearby Chinatown (which itself is not anything to speak of at all). There's also a book written about the restaurants and shops on this street, but this is NOT a touristy spot like so so many of the bakeries in Amsterdam. It's small and quaint with quality baked goods, not massed produced pedestrian food. Although the selections are fairly limited, what they have here is high quality baked goods. They're a very bread centric bakery, which is why I'm guessing their clientele is more local. I've seen locals coming in purchasing loaves of their freshly made breads. I tried their raisin bread and there were so many sweet rainsins in every slice! If you're putting a foodie list together for Amsterdam, definitely add the Apple Turnover here to your list. And bring along a little stash of cash, as they don't accept credit cards here. I'm literally off now to get one to happily start my morning again!
