I love Vintage Karma. This shop has the best vibe/feel/ambience and greatest group of people. I love tattoos, but I've definitely walked into some shops that, for whatever reason, don't feel comfortable. It might just be the day, or me, or who knows what that causes that feeling, but you want to be comfortable when you get a tattoo (beyond the thousands of needle jabs). Vintage Karma has a great collection of characters with a lot of talent, humor, and Intellect. They're open to chatting or letting you read/zone out/whatever. The shop is accepting of all types of people and accommodating for your needs, whether they involve breaks, snacks, or situating you for the best experience. I have several chronic pain issues, so working around those can be challenging. Note: be prepared---I'm not an incredibly social person, but work from Vintage Karma gets noticed even in places with a high percentage of tattooed people. For example. I was just in New Orleans, and I had people going quite a bit out of their ways to look at and ask about a phoenix/peacock (pea-nix) on my arm from Ainslie and my multitude of works from Caleb. read more

Where do I start? Well..I drive from Gibson City to Tuscola to have work done at Vintage Karma, bypassing everything in C-U. Do you need more information? Uhhh...okay... I've had work done by Brian and Ainslie both, original and cover-up. I'm in love with it all. Understand that if you're looking for a tumble-in-drunken-bachelorette-party-midnight-matching-Playboy-bunnies-tattoo-parlor...head back to campus. Not that you couldn't get matching bunny tattoos, but only until 7pm and you'll probably need an appointment. This isn't a $25 flash Friday kind of place. Both of these guys are really talented and actually care about the quality of their work and are actually artists. I know...crazy, right? In order to get an appointment with the wizards, you have to go through Laura. She'll work with you by phone or email. For anything uncommon, expect a consultation appointment. It's for your own good. Laura's also in charge of the cool shit you can buy out front. I think I bought 4 gifts there the first time I went. Super fun. I also love that they're interested in the community and the local artists. Too bad it's not an old guy barber shop. I'd just go there and hang out. Ainslie Heilich is one of the best tattoo artists available. When she owned a shop in Pennsylvania I hired her to turn the barbed wire around my upper arm into a lovely sakura (cherry blossom) branch, complete with the flowers of course. I also commissioned her to do a Frankenstein and the bride tattoo of my pug dogs. Both pieces she did, are amazing. Top-notch work! Anyone living in or near the Tuscola, IL region should feel lucky to have such an advanced tattoo artist nearby. I will upload photos when I get the chance. read more

This tattoo shop was recommended to me by a coworker - my first tattoo in IL (my 5th tattoo in life). They were very easy to get in contact with and schedule a session. Everyone I encountered there was professional, friendly, and welcoming. I felt super comfortable from the minute I walked in the door. They are very active on social media, which is great if you are wanting to make sure they're the right shop for you. Communication via Facebook (sending reference images) was very easy and I loved having that as an option. Would highly recommend this place! They also frequently have deals for their apprentice's work, which is nice if you're just looking for a quick already-designed tattoo. I've heard some of their longer-standing artists are more difficult to get sessions with, but you will not be disappointed with any of the artists. They match you based on the talent of the artist; they really care about you as a client. Killian is a badass with both color and b&w linework. Very friendly, very helpful staff, and a very clean, stylish shop. I had an unexpected opportunity to walk into VK with some time and some clean skin. The first thing I noticed was the clean, attractive shop -- very cool atmosphere, lots of interesting things to see and buy. Next was Laura, who was very friendly and welcoming and helped me find an open spot to sneak in without making arrangements in advance. The artists I met were all friendly, the work I saw in my brief time was solid, and the time I spent in the shop was comfortable and relaxed. We visited from LaGrange IL for my great grandmothers funeral and my family decided last minute to get matching tattoos for her. I called and spoke to Laura and even though we didn't get the tattoos because they were fully booked, she was still amazing! From the moment I walked in, I knew this was gonna be awesome. The consultation with Ainsley was inspiring, and after just a few short minutes, I realized I was working with a true artist. Even though I only had a few basic ideas, he took them and ran with them. What I didn't know at the time was that he was recording our session on his ipad while he worked up the piece. When I returned for my appointment, Laura got me all set up and I got to chat with her and some of the other artists while I waited for Ainsley to set up. The music was groovy, the people were chill and it was absolutely the best four hours I've had in a while. What I ended up with is a beautiful piece of art that was designed specifically for me and with the most enthusiasm I've ever known from a tattoo artist. By the end of the day, everyone I knew on FB was raving and he had posted a speed video of the consult. One of the best experiences of my life, and I can't wait to do it all over again.
